The "Vostro" that I bought from Remachines in 2017 finally ground to a hault in late 2023. The owner said I could speed it up by adding storage space to it or use my yellowing store credit on a newer, rehabbed "Dell" which happened to also be on sale. For $99, I walked out with the newer rehab. I plugged it in and with very little setup, I was again operating a lightening fast computer. It felt good about patronizing a local shop which is also trying to keep stuff out of the landfill. If you have not tried a rehab, I recommend Remachines as a good trial. I brought them a laptop that needed its screen replaced. Boa quoted a very reasonable estimate based on the nature of the necessary repair, and said it would be ready in 1-2 weeks. Three business days later, to my pleasant astonishment. I received a message notifying me the repair was finished. Included were screenshots documenting the end result, and a final price equal to the initial estimate I was given. I'd way rather spend my money at Remachines than on Amazon, because Remachines always has really good deals on equipment and plenty of it. The quality is top-notch on their gear. I took my friend who had experienced computer stores in other places before (outside Madison), where you could just tell them what you wanted, and they would just make it happen. Remachines is like that. They give honest answers to questions. We had trouble with a competing used computer stores where they just tried to sell you what they had, and the computers at the time didn't have wireless cards at that particular vendor. Nate laughed at the question, "do these laptops have wireless?" "what good would they do without wireless?" We had another store in town that is kind of bargain bin warehouse style. "I can fix it!!" the Mister told me. Fast forward two days... the computer is now not even booting up. Black death screen. No little fan whirling. Nada. At this point, it was time to pry the dead lil' computer out of the Mister's grip and trek downtown to Remachines. The friendly folks there got me squared away in no time, just a matter of days. Prices were affordable and I was offered options with varying prices (do I want my computer back with a new hard drive? or do I want my data transferred to another computer?, etc.) Yes! I want it all!!! They were able to save all my data, get it loaded back onto my ol' computer, give me a new hard drive, load programs back on & give me virus/malware software. Total price, about $200. There is an extra charge for using credit cards so I paid with the cold hard cash. Personal checks are not kosher, fyi. Note: They will also look at something for free and there will be no charge if they can't recover data (i.e., my SIM card from an old phone that is wonky). Visit are by appointment so just make sure you call first to make sure someone is going to be there and not off-site. They currently are located downtown but rumor has it they will be moving very soon to a northside location which will eliminate the parking problem. Yay! Overall a great experience, I was glad they were able to save all my stuff and I would certainly recommend them! read more

When the craptastic Dell Studio laptop I've been using inevitably broke down, I was in the market for a computer repair guy / gal. So I typed "computer repair" into Yelp and noted the glowing review of Remachines by Scrantz L. So on Friday, I made the pilgrimage to from Waunakee to Remachine's location on the Square to see if they were as good as advertised. The Verdict: Nate of Remachines rocks. He quickly diagnosed the problem, researched potential solutions and provided me with an estimate an hour later. During that time I took the laptop to Midwest Komputer who wanted to charge me $59 to run some diagnostics before providing me with an estimate. For reals, bro...I think not! Dude, I can see that the wire between the power button and the motherboard is disconnected. Can I charge you $59 for that visual diagnostic. Sorry, I digress. So, I dropped of the laptop with Nate who indicated the repairs would be completed by Tuesday. On Monday, I get a call from Nate indicating the repairs are complete. Sweet! Nate not only reconnected the broken wire but also fixed the defective hinge that caused the problem in the first place. I couldn't be more pleased. And as Scrantz mentioned in her initial review, Nate thanked me for the business. If (or should I say when) the ol' Dell Studio craps out again, I'll be using Remachines to make things better. My first interaction with Remachines was for business. We have two desktop computers used as cash registers, both from Remachines. When one encountered a problem, I called the Remachines office, walked the computer over to them, and they fixed it on the spot - no charge. For comparison, I have a friend who had the exact same problem with a new computer from Best Buy, and it took WEEKS to get her machine fixed. For business, I simply could not have waited, and would have had to purchase a replacement in the mean time. Computer hardware always has a chance of failing (new or used) but when you get it from someone who stands by their work that's far less of a worry. Since then I've bought three devices from Remachines (a laptop and to tablets) and had friends buy others. Each one came at the price you would expect to pay if you got a good deal on Craigslist, but was top quality, with no crapware or any of the problems you risk with buying hardware online. I called Remachines once for network support, and was completely satisfied with the experience. I'm pretty handy with computers myself (I build my own PCs and networks, and I've worked various kinds of tech support for years.) so I was pretty frustrated by the time I called for help. Rescued once again!! Picture this - you work at home. You get the dishwasher running, the laundry started and get into your office ready to start the day. Nate and I had a chance to talk while we were taking the elevator up to the shop, and I was very impressed by the depth of his expertise and his ability to explain things clearly and simply. I went to them asking for an estimate on a repair for my Asus Laptop. The manager, Nate Sperloen, got back to me simply stating that they wouldn't even bother because the repair would be too difficult and too much work.
