While I back up online and offsite due to a complicated failure I was without a complete image of nearly 6TB data back to 1992. Gillware and their team are true professionals. Did an online intake, received a phone call Christmas Eve morning to confirm everything. Great updates and proposal before providing a method of payment. By 30 Dec my replacement drive with 99.999% of the recovered data was in the way back to me. Do know if they needed clean rooms or the level of effort needed or the time required. Just know they took a inop drive and got the data off. Just like an lawyer, dentist, pilot or doctor sometimes you pay for experience and in my opinion it was worth for 30 years worth of files. I had a photographer's worst nightmare happen to me recently. My SD card failed during upload and I lost about 1600 images from a client's wedding. A wedding is not something where you could just schedule a retake, and it was a really heart wrenching phone call I had to make to a bride and family. They are the worst. Dont trust your precious data to them. I went with them because I was desperate and they were the first company that came up on google. Their pitch was very convincing but once I went with them it was a nightmare. I sent my 12 TB hard drive for recovery loss data that I needed urgently for a film festival. A month and a half later (after the festival btw) they send back an 8TB drive that they charged me for but didn't recover all my data. When I ask for my empty 12TB drive they took another week to send it, and it was disassemble, I don't know how to put these things together. Take it from a software engineer, you'll wanna read this review before you go with this company. You are about to invest hundreds or thousands of dollars in your repair, its worth your time to spend a few minutes reading this review. I have included email quotes from the company in my review too Summary: Gillware is very good at what they do, but they will take as much of your money as possible even if its an easy fix. I ended up paying them over $550 plus $28 shipping for a 20 minute fix, and I didn't get all the files I expected. The good: -They uploaded the recovered files to their website so I could preview the file NAMES (this does not mean you can open / download the files) before purchase, which was very valuable to me. It was nice seeing exactly what files were recovered before I put my money down -They are protective of your data once they recover it: once they ship your recovered data back to you on an external hard drive, they keep a backup on site in case it gets lost in the mail or if you need to access their backup -They are responsive and reasonable to deal with. The website is fast and easy to use The bad: The file previewer is misleading, to say the least: For me, it showed that there were 5155 photos recovered (.jpg, .png, etc.). I was very excited to hear that they recovered that many of my personal photos, but when I got the drive back, there were really only 900 personal photos that I took with my camera which were recovered. The rest of the 5155 quoted photos were SYSTEM RELATED PHOTOS. What this means is they are images that you don't care about, images that came with your software, operating system, or applications, icons, etc. I recommend you don't let the file previewer fool you, and realize that there are a TON of system generated files (which show up as images: .jpg, .png formats) which will be recovered. When I spent my money, I thought I was getting 5155 photos, or about $0.10 per photo which was worth it to me. When I found out that 4000+ of those photos were system generated, this was slightly annoying. The worst part of this is that Gillware did not warn me about this at all before taking my money. They should have cautioned me saying: "hey, even though it says 5155 photos were recovered, most of those are system generated photos / items that you probably don't care about". But they didn't and the website doesn't warn me of this trap either Once Gillware finished recovering my data, I asked them what was wrong with the drive. I was surprised to find out what a simple fix this was for them. All they had to do was move some of the harddrive heads and reinstall the firmware on the harddrive. Here is what they said: "During the evaluation the engineers have determined that the firmware on the drive (the brain on how the drive works) had died and we had essentially replaced/repaired the firmware to ensure that the drive knew was it was doing. From there we had also released the read/write heads that were stuck to ensure that we can read the data off of your drive successfully." "Some cases are easier for our engineers to complete the recovery during the evaluation process rather than sending it back into the lab for further work if the customer decides to proceed. Essentially we are taking a gamble that you will agree to move forward with purchasing your data by working on it ahead of time. This route saves us and customers on wait time." In english, this means that it took them less than 1 hour to recover my data, and the drive didn't even need professional LAB work to be repaired. They charged me $550 plus $28 shipping for the recovery operation. Meaning, I paid them $550 per hour, and they didn't even need to send the drive to the lab. That is RIDICULOUS! They don't need $550 / hour for non-lab work. And I honestly don't even think it took them 1 hour to fix my drive. Most likely 20 minutes, if that I know that $550 is cheap for data recovery, but if its only a 20 minute repair, you would think that they would provide a discount. read more

Shady business practices. has a drive die, contacted them about recovery. they advised in an email that they could show what was on the drive before starting to recovery process so that you could then decide if it was worth the $2000-2500 to recover. I sent in the drive, they told me that some of the data was recoverable and asked if I wanted to continue in that process. when I mentioned wanting to see what was on the drive first, they called me instead of continuing over email (i assume so there wasn't any paper trail) and told me that in order to for them to show me the contents of the drive and what was actually being recovered, I would first have to agree to continue with the recovering process. Their entire initial email response before sending in the drive seems like it's designed to sweet talk you into sending in your drive so that once they have it they can go back on their original promises and try to charge you for what they initially said would be included. I will say that their customer service was polite. But you need to watch out for their terms of service. The quote I received stated that they would charge me $3,000 if they were able to recover at least 30% of the data on my 500gb drive (which had less than 200gb of data). Unfortunately my experience with Gillware was a nightmare and I would strongly consider other options. This service was promoted by a local business that was unsuccessful in retrieving my data from an external Seagate backup disk drive. Their flyer leads you to believe they are overly successful at retrieving data from dysfunctional drives. I contacted customer service for next steps only to be greeted poorly, more of a why are you calling me right now attitude. I finally received my instruction to mail and mailed the drive in. I received the "preliminary" review that led you believe they had determined the data was able to be recovered at the price of $1500. Very steep however this drive contains 21 years of family photos and videos therefore cost was not an issue. I called customer service back to verify the data was recoverable and they stated based on the preliminary check yes to some percentage. Getting my hopes up was the problem. I received a call from their engineer 5 days later stating the data was not recoverable. WHAT? Based on firmware...WHAT? Then they wanted me to pay shipping charges to send it back to me, which their lowest shipping was UPS ground at $31.00 for a 5 inch by 5 inch item. They tell a great story, lead you to believe its possible only to follow up with "sorry" now pay us or we will hold your drive hostage. Gillware recovered the data lost on a fairly new WD hard drive. While disappointed in the device (not GIllware's fault), Gillware recovered my data as promised. I contacted the company for a data recovery job and sent in my disk. I was told that it looked like the majority of the disk could be recovered. I didn't hear anything for a while and contacted the company again and they were waiting on parts. Then no communication again, until I was told that the drive could not be recovered. I then requested that it be shipped back to me with the credit card on file. No response and no disk received. What a joke! I should have gone with someone local to me, but believed the sales pitch and initial positive assessment. Why bother assessing at all if they didn't have the parts to recover it and how could that have been accurate in the first place? Save the aggravation and find somewhere else. I was not charged for the recovery, but also didn't get my defective drive back so I could have another company assess and attempt recovery locally as that company said it was likely fixable to get data extracted based upon the type of drive. Gillware is my hero! I want the whole world to know how super this computer service is! Procrastination did me in. A year ago I purchased a new external hard drive (HD) because i figured my old external HD needed replacing. i procrastinated doing the transfer. When i did decide to do it, the oldie produced a lot of scraping noise and didnt transfer all the files. I had a computer friend look at it. He was able to retrieve about 10%. He suggested I find a service with a clean room because the plates in the HD needed to be looked at in a "clean sterile room". I consulted with Super Geeks and they referred me to Gillware. I found Gillware online. As soon as I submitted an inquiry, I received a phone call from customer service. I was provided with a possible piece quote as mentioned on their website. The greatest about Gillware is that the customer does NOT pay if data is not recovered. The service is quick and they provide you with a list of documents recovered and the amount unrecoverable. I had about 4 documents not recoverable from 10 years worth of priceless precious family documents and pictures! Because my HD had to be repaired, the level of service/price was bumped up from $200 -$400 range to $600. Then a 500GB portable external HD was added on for $90 on which they sent my files to me for a well worth $709. I can't thank them enough! Excellent customer service. Lesson learned: back up your precious doc in multiple HDs and DVDs. My experience with Gillware was a waste of time, effort and money. I erased my laptop hard drive without properly backing up my files and had reinstalled Windows 7. I spoke very clearly with the Gillware representative over the phone as to ensure that they could recover the information I had accidentally deleted. I was repeatedly assured that it was a routine recovery in the under $500 range and that all my files could be recovered with names and folders intact. I had explained that I had already successfully recovered the raw data files but the naming and organization was worth the cost if they could execute the recovery. I was assured a 90% recovery rate. I sent in my undamaged lap top hard drive. Three weeks later I received a quote for $800 at a 50% recovery rate. This is called a bait and switch. To compound the insult the spokesperson now said that only the raw data files could be recovered. Gillware was then telling me that it would cost $800 to do what I had already done with FREE software at home. I was of course disgusted with their lack of integrity and clarity and declined to have my drive "repaired". I paid to have my drive sent back to me. In an example of the company's further incompetence I was sent the WRONG hard drive. I currently have a desktop drive sitting on my counter while Gillware is stumbling to find my drive. It should also be noted that none of the four Gillware employees I spoke with had more than a smattering of computer knowledge. They spoke in very broad terms and could not answer any direct technical questions. They continually refer to their "engineers", which is a gross abuse of the term since they are computer techs at best. Their turn around time of three weeks and the asian ID sticker on the drive lead me to believe that GIllware outsources all of their work and their representatives are knowledge-less fools sitting in a Wisconsin strip mall. They got it ALL! These guys are hardcore, top-notch recovery specialists. When my 2TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim external drive failed (started spinning down, light went off, and showed "drive corrupted & inaccessible")...a drive containing years and hundreds of thousands of my family's precious photos and videos, which by several freaks of accident turns out didn't have backups since 2015, I freaked out, panicked, spent 6 days researching recovery companies all over the nation, and interviewed the 3 top rated companies. (Gillware has also handled police, forensic and NASA cases). After talking with Gillware's head recovery specialist (not just a sales rep), it was apparent that whatever the failure, if anyone can recover it, Gillware can. They explained potential problems/solutions with a drive like mine (good and bad) the probable cost window ($1000-1500 based on the drive and problem I described), and that they wouldn't know for sure until they inspect it. After taking a big gulp, saying a prayer and handing them my drive, they called within 24 hours with fantastic news that they projected 99.9% data recovery and a firm quote of $1,000 (the lower range of the estimate). And 99.9-100% they got! ALL photos and videos (over 1TB) were recovered in full. The only thing that seems to have been partially recovered was one file. ...ONE file. (an insignificant doc file). Could another data recovery company have done this for cheaper? Maybe, but with such important data, I wasn't willing to risk it. Couldn't be happier. Thank you Gillware! Life saver. We have a small manufacturing facility in the area and our principle piece of machinery went down when a 1998 DOS hard drive crashed/fried. The customer service from initial contact through the whole process which was about a week from the time I sent til I received it back consisted of phone calls and emails. You are kept informed of each step, view the files that can be recovered and pick your return media. The price is steep, mine was in the middle of the original price spread. Upcharge on the hard drive the data is returned on. Since they offer cloud service it would have been nice if I could have downloaded it, also a way for them to pitch their service. A PC shop and a local data recovery firm diagnosed my HDD as a doorstop after 3 weeks of attempted recovery. At least they offered to recycle it for free... After a bit of searching, it looked like Gillware might have the skills I was looking for so I decided to take one last shot with Gillware Data Recovery and I'm so glad I did. I had severe platter damage so I knew data recovery was going to be expensive, if it even could be done. But after free shipping and a 1 day evaluation period they were able to give me an upfront cost and let me decide if it was worth it to me (narrator: It was) for an attempt at recovering 50% of my critical data. No data, no charge. Today I received 100% of the data at the cost they quoted me in less than 2 weeks. Next time I'll skip the middle man and go to directly to the pros. read more

Let me begin by stating that Gillware Data Recovery was NOT able to recover my data. I know that not all corrupted data can be brought back, but we were just very disappointed in both their inability as well as the service we received (as you will see why). To start, I had a memory card from a camera that had some corrupted pictures on it. Not all, but around 40% of the files for some reason were corrupted data. When I dropped off the card at their office (I am local) they were optimistic and said they will have their engineer who handles these types of memory cards look at it. Wonderful! At that time they quoted anywhere from $250 to $500. Fine, these were pictures from a vacation of a lifetime. Two days later I received an email stating and showing that 100% of the data was recovered. OMG! How great!! They asked for payment which was $400 plus a fee to put the data on 2 DVDs. By the way, they charged me $7.99 per DVD...Yikes! Here is where everything went bad. Two days after I paid I get a phone call stating that actually NONE of the data was recovered and they need to do more work on the recovery. You heard right, NONE!! So, they billed me $400 and they hadn't really even done anything. This is where I had to question everything. What was their billing practice? If I paid $400 what is that they did? Did they download something off of my memory card and simply say "OK, $400 please!". Don't they know that I already did this at home!! Who is working on the data recovery? I mean how incompetent are the individuals working on my recovery? It seems they are doing the same thing that I did but wanting HUNDREDS of dollars for it. Am I going to get billed for more money since they need to actually do work on my data recovery? They have me in a bind in that I want the data and have already shown that I was willing to pay. Oh Boy!! In the end, as I said above, they were not successful. It is worth noting that they did refund me my money 100%, but again everything seemed to be mishandled and nothing was really explained to me. (We paid more for "next day delivery by 3PM.") Gillware absolutely exceeded my expectations and recovered my irreplaceable data. I was lazy and didn't get a new external hard drive for my Mac and of course it crashed on me. After going through phone support with Apple, a local Apple repair shop, and a big data recovery company in California, a friend mentioned Gillware. The company in California had told me they weren't sure if they could recover my data and, if they could, it would be a minimum of $2,400 to do so. I hope that this review is seen as more than just a "local" business, because Gillware is a national treasure! After a catastrophic failure with my Microsoft Surface SSD, I was ready to give up hope. I called my local guy in Colorado, where I first heard about Gillware. First, I needed to get my SSD from "behind the screen", which means I had to get Microsoft to certify the death of my SSD. ALWAYS do that first, so that they will at least give you a new computer (if under warranty). Microsoft tried a boot recovery, no luck. Off to another local data recovery company, no luck, but they did extract the SSD. From there, I dropped in into a padded envelope and off to Madison, WI with hopes and prayers following close behind. They charged me to send it back and advised me it was destroyed inside and not recoverable. I sent it to Gillware for a second opinion. They sent the box and no charge for their inspection. A month later I received a new hard drive with all of my data restored in the directory tree with instructions. Unbelievable. Great to communicate with, honest and fast. They do an incredible job. I called Eco Data back for a return on my investment and they laughed. An officer of the company called me back and essentially said they will send drives to Gillware for second opinions as well, oh.... and pound sand on your money back from Eco Data. Gillware rocks. These guys are absolutely amazing and I would recommend them without hesitation. I was completely devastated when my hard drive crashed and I didn't have a recent backup. I had all of my work files on the drive, as well as precious family photos and videos. Unfortunately this wasn't a simple data recovery job. The drive had physical problems that made it unrecognizable. I was completely shocked when I started calling around and found out that the only way to possibly recovery my data was to have it sent to a clean-room environment and that the cost for doing so was going to be in the $3,000 to $5,000 range! What??? Then I found Gillware. They were so professional, so helpful, and I immediately knew on the phone that I was at the right place. AND they did the job for a fraction of that cost. I sent them my drive, and a week later, I had 99.9% of my data back again. I can't begin to tell you how awesome they were throughout the whole process....they were kind and empathetic to my situation, and they went above and beyond to stay in touch the entire time and let me know what the status was. Terrible company. Everyone I spoke to on the phone is rude and disinterested. Charged too much, and then lost my data, requiring me to start the whole process over again. Offered no consolation for this mess, not even a discount. read more
