My family recently started volunteering here - in part to get volunteer hours for my high school…read moreson, but also because we love animals. Volunteering can range from "socializing" with dogs, walking them, helping clean, do laundry - whatever you can think of. This organization means well and loves their animals. It can't be easy - as one animal goes out, there are many more waiting to be rescued. It's heartbreaking, but SFTS is one of the heroes to those animals. They're not a large swanky facility with tons of financial resources. But they care. Their adoption events are at PetSmart (east side) every Saturday. While the adoption fee can feel like a lot (it varies from pet to pet), remember they've had all of their medical care taken care of. A mill puppy will cost way more, and rescued dogs KNOW they are being rescued. There's no other love like that.

We adopted our sweet Rudie from Shelter From The Storm seven years ago, and they gave us the gift…read moreof some of the most wonderful years we could have ever asked for. From the start, it was clear how much the staff truly cares for every animal that comes through their doors. They made sure Rudie, then called Dana, was healthy, loved, and ready for her forever home. These pics are from the day we drove from Chicago to Madison to bring her home. Over the years, we came to understand what people mean when they say, "who rescued who." Rudie brought more love, laughter, and comfort into our lives than we could ever have imagined. We're deeply grateful for the joy she gave us and for the compassion this shelter shows every single day. We lost Rudie last month, and while our hearts are heavy, we're endlessly thankful for the seven beautiful years we shared. She was family in every sense, and that's because this shelter gave her such a strong start. The love, care, and respect they show every animal make all the difference. Losing her reminds us just how special adoption truly is. Thank you for helping us find our best friend.

Brenna was just incredible helping us with our rescue, June. We've had her for a couple years and…read moreshe was always super leash reactive, barking at just about every dog, bike, and skateboard that she saw. After 3 sessions at SMS, June is able to walk with us with no problem. I genuinely wouldn't believe it if you told me she would improve this much a month ago. I can't recommend SMS and Brenna specifically enough!

Fantastic experience. We have a highly, highly energetic 2 year old Wheaton Terrier (Tilly!)…read more During our consultation, Greg took the time to understand our specific goals we had for Tilly's training. He walked thru the training technique and schedule, being sure to answer any questions or concerns we had. We scheduled three, full day trainings - spread over 3 weeks so that we would have practice time in between each lesson. We would drop Tilly off in the AM, pick her up in the afternoon. When we arrived back at the facility, my husband and I had an hour with the trainer and Tilly to walk through what they went over in the day. We also got a "Report Card" after each lesson that highlighted how it went. Super helpful. Brenna trained Tilly on the 1st and 3rd day and Jada trained Tilly on the 2nd day. Each were fantastic and couldn't have been more helpful and knowledgeable. They walked through the training collar process, commands and walking habits. They helped Tilly go from pulling on her harness to complete loose leash walking, how to get into her "Place", how to heal, and how to stay focused while around other distractions (dogs, cars, people, etc). Facilities were clean, well managed. Highly recommend Sit Means Sit, Brenna, Jada and Greg!

She always brings attention to possible concerns for me watch ie redness around penis, ear problems etc. She listens to me about health concerns ie hearing/vision, temperament ie possible biting or skittishness, how short or long to cut. I'm currently on 4 dogs needing grooming. Deb suggested I try bringing in two at a time. She followed up a few sessions later to see how it was working & whether or not I wanted to go back to bringing all 4 at once again. A few yrs ago, I had an emergency foster needing grooming. I took to Petsmart East. Worse grooming experience! I now watch through their window and watch the groomers. Not the most patient groomers-watch how they tug the leash or push down on the dogs. I found Deb based on a co-worker's recommendation after a horrible experience with now defunct groomer at Noah's Ark. The groomer shaved so close on muzzle he had razor burns! Hopefully Deb will have recommendation when she retires (which I hope is not in the near future)!!

I went here three years ago and now I have two cats from DCHS and I spend all my money on spoiling them. We have our two sweet, angel fur babies AKA children from DCHS and now we are crazy cat people. The feline counselors and adoption volunteers we worked with on both adoption occasions were amazing. They did very thorough intakes of our lives and wants/needs and helped match us to our fuzzballs. On both occasions, the adoption counselors recommended a cat that wasn't originally on our list "to see" and both ended up going home with us and being our perfect matches. The shelter itself is clean, well-maintained and full of fabulous people who care about animals and their humans. They adopt out hundreds of animals each week and serve a bunch of remote locations too. They have birds, small critters and dogs and cats. They also have a super cool wildlife rescue program that works with bats, owls, turtles and all kinds of Wisconsin wild creatures. They do amazing work and they only humanely euthanize an animal if it will not survive otherwise. They don't put down animals if they have too many, in fact this is a shelter that sends caravans to rescue animals from other states and shelters that would kill them. They have great veterinary teams and health consultations for new adopters. It would be an understatement to say that DCHS has changed my life. Please see ample photos of my photogenic cats.
