Called the store looking for some brass chain. I said I need bright brass color, not antique brass color. The guy said they had it. I found the chain section but there was no bright brass. Just the antique black/brass color. I flagged down a guy who said he be back to help me. I spent 10 minutes in the aisle way calling other hardware stores. Located another one that said they had it and left. I gave them 2 stars because they have been more helpful in the past. Their remodel has been going on for months and no one really knows where anything is. I come here because I expect better service than Home Depot. I haven't gotten that lately. read more

I've been going to your Midvale store for 20 years. Recently it changed to Ace hardware so I joined the rewards program and got a coupon for $5 off a $25 purchase. I used it to buy some bags of bark. But I didn't look at the receipt at the time. My mistake. Later I discovered that I didn't get the $5 off. I went into the store today and asked for and adjustment. I had my receipt. The guy behind the register said he wouldn't do it, and gave me another coupon which doesn't do me any good. I've spent THOUSANDS of dollars at this store. The guy could have at least explain why he couldn't give me an adjustment (he probably could have, just didn't want the hassle). This is very disappointing. read more

Really enjoyed shopping at this Dorn Hardware on my way to another errand on Hammersley Road. The aromas from the taqueria at one end of this small strip mall are like an invitation to stick around for lunch, or carry out, after stocking up at the hardware store. Hard to resist. At Dorn Hardware, David was eager to be of assistance in my mission to find insulation for an outdoor faucet that is difficult to protect with the usual faucet protectors due to an extension that's been in place for at least 25 years, and is proving difficult to remove. David looked at the picture on my phone of the outdoor faucet and made a plan, explaining to me how it would work insulating with the Faucet Protector and Rubber Foam Weatherseal. He made sure the width and thickness of the Weathrseal worked with the Faucet Protector. He then directed me to the sale on 3M Window Insulator Kits. Mission accomplished. I left this friendly and helpful hardware store with a warm feeling and an eye towards the taqueria. I will be back. read more

I, too, used to enjoy coming to this Dorn Hardware Store. However, it has drastically changed in terms of atmosphere and staff. I miss Gavin and know he has moved to the Verona store. I believe Olga is managing the Verona store. With both of them gone, it just isn't the same. It feels far less like the helpful neighborhood store it once was when I first started going there. I still go there, but it just is not the same. It's a shame. Dorn blew it on this one. read more

Needed for 40 plastic screws and they had. Was asked three times if I needed help. But then I went to check out and there is no help.

I used to go to this store instead of the big box store on the other side of the Beltline because I wanted my money to stay more local. And generally, I've been treated well when I go there. The man who helped me yesterday was very kind and wearing a face mask - unfortunately, it was a "thin blue line" mask. This symbol represents approval of police brutality. I would think that a business would know better than to allow an employee to wear such a symbol during work hours for the sake of the comfort and safety of all patrons. I won't be spending any more time or money at this location. Reading through the other reviews, it seems like the friendly neighborhood feeling this store used to be known for is gone. read more

I like to shop at small local stores. Always helpful staff on the floor helped me find what I needed quickly. However if the cashier continues to refuse to wear a mask I will turn around and walk out next time. Businesses have a responsibility to their community. After driving past hundreds of times, literally, I finally ended up visiting with my boyfriend who had been advised that they had a large fishing section. Large is an understatement; the fishing area is so big you actually have to go outside and down one level to enter into an entire store devoted to fishing and related supplies. There are hundreds (thousands?) of bait options, ranging from tiny little jigs to muskee bait so large it freaks me out that anything in a lake would need something so big to chomp on. If you need live bait, they've got that too; there are a bunch of tubs in the back housing fish of various sizes. Aside from tackle they've got other fishing and outdoor-related items like life vests, warm coats, hunting supplies, lake maps, and the ability to set you up with whatever licenses you need as well. The folks working the counter are generally friendly and knowledgable, and at least one of the guys enjoys talking about whatever my BF is buying and getting the scoop on what's happening on the lakes. I'm not a big outdoors person myself, but I can generally entertain myself while there by exploring the endless aisles. Ambiance leaves a bit to be desired, but I'm pretty sure the average customer doesn't care that things are a little run down and dusty. read more

This is my favorite hardware store in town! I bought all the paint for my house here, great quality, covered efficiently, looks just how I wanted. And I keep coming back for various odds and ends for other home improvement projects. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Best of all, dogs are welcome in the store. My pooch loves coming along for the adventure and treats from the staff, no wonder he love it here. read more

I get consistently great help when I go there. I didn't need to see the long term employees- didn't know them. People reminiscing about the old days- times change. This is a great small business. Shop there! Family businesses need to support. Nobody can replace your old friends at Dorn. That is an impossible bar to set for anyone. We have been going here for a long time and have spent quite a bit of money at the Dorn Pro Shop. They know us by now and we have usually had good experiences, but the last few times and especially our last time the customer service was terrible at the hardware store and the Pro Shop. We were treated with disrespect, barked at, treated suspiciously and change thrown rudely at us. Wondering if it is the color of our skin and this treatment made us feel very bad (especially my kids). The last time we were here we were followed suspiciously around when we were trying to make a big purchase. Sounds pretty racist to me so we will be spending our money at a place that values us and treats us with dignity and respect. You have lost good loyal customers Dorn. read more

We've shopped at Dorn Outdoor Pro Shop for the past 4 years. They are phenomenal! They have awesome quality products and many things in stock, including live bait selection. Prices are reasonable. The employees are very helpful and friendly (contrary to some of the other reviews). Please note the hours for the Outdoor Pro Shop are NOT the same as the hardware shop upstairs (sometimes open a little earlier, NOT open on Mondays). So be sure to clarify & double check and ask for the Pro Shop's hours! read more

Thanks, Nancy, for your words of explanation. In today's world I still believe that customer service is the Benchmark for judging a business. You have typically one chance to make a first impression. But I've had several experiences at different local stores where the employees are deep in conversation and typically ignore the customer. I'm less concerned about the person at the cash register. The setup at Dorn's Hardware on Midvale is destined for negative customer experiences. When you walk in the person who can readily greet you has his back to you. All that person has to do is look at you, smile and say hello. That's all I expect when I walk into a store. Anything else for me will strike me as odd. read more

Could not return a $10.99 purchase with the original receipt and credit card unless I gave my phone number and drivers license. Spoke to the manager and no explanation could be given why they needed to collect my personal information. I want to support a local business but I value my privacy more. I now I cross the street to Home Depot where I have no problems returning items with nothing more than my credit card. read more

I purchased 2 spare key locks and keys for a Dodge and GM. Weeks later I went to put them under the vehicle and one of the keys didn't work properly so I went back to get it rekeyed but made the mistake of grabbing the wrong key because they were similar. The gentlemen at Dorns tried to fix it and realized it was the wrong make so he replaced it with the right one no charge. Great home town customer service even when it was my mistake. read more

I have been coming to this hardware store for 20 years, since I was a kid and would bike there and pester them for advice on how to fix things. They have everything, including the small obscure screws and parts no other store stocks. The staff is knowledgeable and can advise you on most or all projects. They can do some small repairs in store. The prices are not outrageous, many items are actually cheaper than the big box stores. This is what you want a locally owned hardware store to be. read more

I went in asking for a product to seal a raised bed I was building. I told the man I did not want color, just protection for the wood. He pulled a can from the shelf & said this was the only choice. To begin with, it was $30+ and a gallon. He said That was the product I needed. When I applied it, it was this god awful yellow but I thought maybe it went on that color & soaked in to be clear. NOT. It ruined my cedar wood. When I returned it 2wks later when I was back from working out of town I was told by the paint guy it could not be tinted & there was nothing I could do. He had a totally apathetic attitude. Dorn used to be a place that I could trust they knew what they were talking about & get help. Clearly that is no longer true. I will NEVER shop there again! The family hardware store has been disappearing thanks to the Big Box stores, but I don't like the Big Box stores because more often than not the employees are not knowledgeable, plus the stores are cold and impersonal. I don't often need a lot of hardware, but when I do it's usually something quirky, and pretty much every time I need something quirky and head over to Dorn, I (A) find a helpful friendly person who knows stuff, and (B) knows what I need and where it is in the store! Today I needed a really oddball, very long, metric screw for an Ikea chair. The original sheared off and the chair was useless without a replacement. I brought the two pieces in, a cheerful young man headed straight for the correct aisle, opened the correct drawer, pulled out the correct screw (!!), and for a buck-sixty I was able to repair my favorite chair. I'm sitting in it writing this review on my laptop. This is not the first time Dorn has worked a minor miracle for me, and I'm confident it will not be the last. read more
