After suffering a strict diet for his body-building competition, my out-of-town nephew was thrilled that we brought him to this fantastic BBQ joint for his celebratory dinner. The Feast platter was perfect for two hungry guys, and two gals with slightly smaller appetites. So much variety on one platter, with all the fixings. The baked beans, and brisket were everyone's favourite. The sausage disappeared pretty fast too. One negative: the chicken is too dry. Some pieces had rendered so much, they were nothing more than skin and bone. Since it comes with the platters, I always just pack the chicken to go and use it in soup at home. But overall, a satisfying dinner, and a great way to impress guests. Also, I love that this all-u-can-meat place is thriving in granola town! I've eaten here several times and have gotten take-out as well during the pandemic. I LOVE the Beef Ribs. They are literally fall off the bone. Once you (easily) separate the meat from the bone, it is like having a very tender rib steak. I'm so happy that they serve it every day now, instead of just Fridays and Saturdays. I also love the catfish. I have had difficulty finding catfish in a restaurant in Vancouver, which is one of my favorite types of fish to eat. But Memphis Blues BBQ does a great job in serving catfish. The batter is tasty and very crunchy and the fish is delicious. When I have dined in, the service is great and the staff is super-friendly. You order at the counter and they bring your order to the table. Service is usually very quick. The reasons I did not give it a 5 is because: 1) I don't care for their BBQ sauce. To me, it tastes funny. I always ask for the BBQ sauce on the side and then just not use it. 2) Aside from the Beef ribs and the Catfish, I don't care for anything else. My friend took me to Memphis Blues on Commercial for my birthday since I like anything that revolves around meat...The atmosphere is alright but the service was not good which prompted me to to give 3 stars. We ordered the Memphis platter which had pulled pork, BBQ chicken, ribs, rib ends, beef, and delicious fries...In addition, the platter had potato salad, coleslaw, beans, and corn bread on the side. My significant other and I went to this location after being introduced to the Kelowna location. I will start by saying that it is a pretty neat system. First you order, then go pay, and your food is prepared and delivered to your table. When you are done your meal, you can just leave, instead of waiting for the bill. Now about the food. Well every time I go, I get the same thing, the pint and pulled pork special. My other half always get the pulled pork poutine which I end up finishing for her. The meat was tender, and the food was generally good. I found that small areas of pulled pork that were not doused in barbecue sauce were a bit bland, but that was resolved quickly by mixing the meat with the sauce a but better. I like that set up as I get a more varied diet that way :) . The price is a tad on the higher side, but the food is well worth it. The service is impeccable and the decor and ambiance really speaks of a smoke house, which makes one feel comfortable and casual. At this location, we got to participate in a trivia that someone was encouraging all the tables round to participate. It made a great fun time, especially when the answers were provided for the trivia and we got a dose of reality from how badly we did with the trivia quiz. If your parents are like mine, they love White Spot. It drives me nuts. I've got no beef with the Spot, it's just that my parents could go there any old time when they're home in Kamloops. The fact that I have *so* many places I've been dying to take them to but they refuse is sooo frustrating. So my parents aren't the most... open minded when it comes to cuisine. I snuck one by 'em the other week and ordered takeout from Memphis Blues. I've been wanting to take them to Memphis for years, but whenever they come down to visit, they insist on--you guessed it, White Spot. Well, they were tired and relaxing in my living room so I phoned MB with my order of one Elvis platter. "How long will it take?" I asked. "Does 5 minutes sound ok?" the man on the phone replied. He was definitely speaking my language. I zipped down to The Drive and fetched the food, delicious meaty smells wafting through my car. In hunger-crazed panic, I reached into the bag and gorged on some DELICIOUS cornbread, with whole kernels of corn in there to sweeten it all up. I am pleased to say that my non-expressive (and adorable) father was loving the food. He verbalized it. That rarely happens when it comes to food... meat and potatoes are all he eats, and since meat and potatoes are boring, he rarely has reason to praise them. Well this time he did. Memphis Blues makes me a sad panda. I'm a brisket slut and Memphis has the most tender smoked brisket in Vancouver. The only fair criticism is that their BBQ sauce is too sweet and molasses-y for my liking. Sure, it's solid BBQ, especially for the price. ~$40 will get you the Memphis Feast which will give you all the meat (ribs, brisket, pulled pork, BBQ chicken, rib ends, smoked sausage) and all the sides (corn bread, coleslaw, potato salad, fries & beans) as a sampler -- enough for 4 'normal' people. Perfect if you're indecisive or you follow my maxim: 'The deliciousness of a meal is positively correlated with the number of animals that had to die for it'. SO MUCH FOOD!! OMG. Me and my friends ordered the Elvis Platter and it was SO MUCH! We had an amazing day though at the place. It really made me full for the rest of the day. Meat lovers, you have to come here FOR SURE!! I can say that the Elvis Platter can feed up to 6 people FULL... It was that scary and it was delicious. The sauce was very up to my taste, maybe because I had a strong sweet tooth that day, but I just used it all. I realized later there was a stronger BBQ sauce on our tables that had a nice spicy edge to the BBQ sauce. That was even better!! I enjoyed that sauce ever more!! The best meat was the Pulled Pork. The fries was different in a good way too! I enjoyed the fries the most because they didn't need ketchup, for once. They used a special spice on them which was sweet and salty which really made me love them! I would go back just to try their poutine if fries themselves made drool over them. I am a big fan of good barbecue. This is pretty good. Vancouver needs to embrace this place because this is part of the diversity that makes this city so great. I have been to dozens of BBQ's below the 49th parallel and this is a good place. I love that they are trying their best to be completely authentic. That is a good quality to a restaurant. The meat is pretty good. What's important is that they actually smoke their meats in a wood smoker. There are a few places in Vancouver that claim to have bbq but either boil the meat prior to putting bbq sauce on it and claim that it is smoked. This is not one of those places. I went to this restaurant at least 4 times. now, I don't want to sound like a BBQ snob but I was taught how to cook real southern BBQ from the World famous Gellerosa ranch & BBQ in southern USA. now the Memphis Blues B.B.Q. House is no where near as good as Gellerosa, but, it does carry some tasty treats.... Now, to call themselves,'southern' or 'authentic' is just plain wrong and should be discarded as it sets the food up for failure. proof,- there is no collard greens, black eyed peas, candied yams, hot links, or gumbo, a requirement for any real southern BBQ restaurant, -all the Memphis B.B.Q. House's sides are just screaming Canadian picnic at best. BUT! the main injustice to the theme 'southern food' is... they should never, never cook their meat with BBQ sauce. every southern restaurant knows the sauce is put ON THE SIDE. :o(. now i know they say; "its on the side" but when you order it... guess what?? yes, there it is.... the meat is burnt with it. However, on a positive note, their pork rib ends really brought me home and that's why I returned again and again. they at least seem to cook that with care and tradition, (and yes they got this one right, sauce on the side). Unfortunately, the chicken and the corn bread are way too dry. The pulled pork is extremely over-cooked and the beef brisket is not properly trimmed, -too much fat and grilse. Therefore, stay away from the platters.... order the pork ribs or definitely the rib ends for a good meal. Bar-B-Que! Need I say more? If you're a true carnivore, as I am, then this is where meat lovers die and go to heaven... It was a warm & sunny evening when 11 ravenous carnivores commandeered the patio picnic tables of the small cafeteria style Memphis Blues on Commercial. They left fully satisfied, complete w/distended bellies and heartburn dreams waiting to happen. A few of us decided to share platters and ended up ordering the Elvis Platter and the Memphis Platter (which is just a smaller version of the Elvis). The platters came out with all the sides and southern bar-b-que heaven. I had never seen so much glorious meat on a single plate! My personal favorite was the pulled pork and beef brisket. There was just enough sauce, spices and grease that brought out the wonderful smoky meat flavor! And the meats were not the only stars of the night...the cornbread, beans and salads were also a hit. Not to mention the cheap wine and beer to help wash down all that cholesterol. I went to Memphis last Tuesday (Oct. 3rd) night cause I had this sudden craving of BBQ meats, arrived pretty late at 8:30 or so and ordered the beef brisket meal to go. The waitress was quite friendly and I got my brisket within 5 minutes. Extra star for blazing fast services. So I got home and dug in right away and just to find out the brisket is just dry, like really dry. The flavour is there, the smokyness is there, the BBQ sauce is great but it is so dry the brisket itself is almost crunchy. I got home within 15min and my time spent driving home shouldn't have made it this dry. I wish it was that juicy like the guy mentioned before, would definitely be 4 stars. read more

Took my teenage son for dinner here and had a truly top notch experience! The guy who served us was one of the best servers I have ever had anywhere. He had a big, genuine hello for everyone who entered. A very casual approach, but very welcoming. He did an excellent job fielding my questions about gluten-free options; was knowledgeable and when he was uncertain at all he said so and happily double-checked, which means the world to someone who is celiac and trying a new place. His info and recommendations were awesome. I had the salad with chicken on top - sans the sauce as it has gluten in it, and we tried the potato salad and cooked cooked greens sides. I honestly prefer my own potato salad, but the greens were excellent with a little kick. And, even without the sauce the meat was AMAZING! (Like I keep fantasizing about it kind of amazing!) Finally, all the staff seemed happy and to have enthusiasm for the place they were working. They could have more gluten-free options. This might seem like an odd place to go for a girl that doesn't eat much meat. But I love the Catfish on Greens! And catfish is a sustainable fish option! I can get on board with that! I just realized that I have been eating here for 11 years now and have never written a review. Fatty cuts, full of connective tissue and cartilage, slow cooked by hot smoke is one of the worlds finest cuisines. These guys have been doing it for a long time and have their method down pat, you get exactly the same thing every time. Brisket is excellent with the fat-cap still on. The fat gets hot and heavily chars the rub providing a very dark, almost black, bark, top-flght technique. The surprise is the BBQ sausage, meaty like a Ukrainian or polish sausage but smoked, excellent again. The chicken is not my favourite, I feel that too much fat is rendered during the smoking leaving a dry mouth-feel. BBQ beans and collard greens are also top flight, like you would want cooked at home. I like to add a little extra vinegar to the table sauce and cole slaw because I like the extra acid but, not every one feels the same way. You better come hungry, it's a great place to bring your 300 lb uncle. It's worth a trip if you live in the city and want BBQ. read more

Disappointed. That's the best way to describe my experience here. My expectations were not TOO high. A friend had been bragging up the ribs (maybe at a different location since it is a chain?) but while they were not the worst I'd ever had, they weren't the best. That distinction goes to the slow-cooked ribs made by my ever-present companion, the Divine Ms. K. Still, I understand comparing home cooked ribs to restaurant ribs may be unfair. Okay - here's a comparison between restaurants. When a place called "Boston Pizza" makes far better ribs than a place whose speciality is ribs, maybe that place needs to look at its recipe. They were okay, but kind of dry, kind of chewy, not as good as ... well, I've already been there. The sides were not really all that much better...in fact, they were poorer. The potato salad was a bit bland, the 'slaw was forgettable and the Pit beans were the pits. (Again, I've made much better beans at home.) Hey, but the beer was cold (too bad you have to get it for yourself). And the background music was pretty good. Liked the decor, too. But the food was just too mediocre to ever warrant going back again. Don't know if the other outlets in this chain are better...but if it's a chain, probably not, at least not discernibly so. Memphis Blues BBQ House @ Commercial Drive is a very rare place indeed. Whenever I get a BBQ fix, I hop on the skytrain from downtown to Commercial and walk over to the restaurant. Ordering huge platters of meat, chicken and fixings is incredibly filling, satisfying and wallet-lightening. I have found it's easier to go with a few friends and order the larger platter(s) and have left overs. I need to discuss something very important though. Meat sweats. It's horribly disgusting and I hope you don't get them, but since the food here is great, it's always a risk. Ladies, meat sweats aren't sexy! The Elvis platter is a good value. Make sure to get the to-go boxes for after so you can take the extras home for leftovers during the week. I'd recommend going full country and getting some whiskey and a pitcher of beer to go with your pitcher. Since your diet is already tossed out the window, you might as well go all out! A quick note, this isn't a restaurant restaurant. You need to order and pay up front at the counter and then they will either call out your order when it's ready or someone will drop it off at your table. Same with your drinks. There's not a lot of seating, so you may need to wait. The picnic benches out front are great for sitting and people watching while you eat, especially since it's commercial. All you could ever want. They truely have delicious food. I ate the combo platter that included two meats of your choice, cornbread, french fries or potato salad and coleslaw. They have a variety of bbq sauces including their original memphis sauce, their spicy memphis sauce and the north carolina style mustard sauce. All of the sauces were wonderful although the north carolina mustard was an unexpected favourite for me as it paired with the brisket perfectly and went well with the pulled pork aswell. Perhaps this is just the price I pay when I want some tender loving cooked meat... will it be the brisket? The sausage? The pulled pork? In any case, the advantage of the hands-off service is that if the restaurant isn't busy, they'll let you linger as long as you like. I came here today for a late lunch. We had a combo platter with ribs and brisket, along with fries, cole slaw, beans and cornbread. In addition, we got some bbq wings and lemonade. To be honest, the best two things that we had were the fries and the wings. I agree with some of the reviewers about the sauce: too molasses-y tasting. I wish their sauce was a little sweeter, or have a Carolina-syle vinegar-based sauce. The ribs were fine, but the brisket was a little dry. Overall, the food was ok. Soooooo disappointed! Ribs were NOT at all, fall off the bone, melt in your mouth tender, which is what we were expecting for a "Rib House" and were rather tough and not at all juicy! The beans they served with the ribs, were such a small portion, and again, NO flavour other than smoke, they're barely worth mentioning as a "comes with" item. The collard greens didn't have ANY salt added, and were served in water with some type of pulled meat, which the menu doesn't even mention. The calamari was actually very tender, but was way too salty and very greasy, and cut super thin where there was far more batter than squid. The fries had a nice crunch, but again in my opinion, too salty, and they seem to use the same salt seasoning on everything. Southern Style Cooking - Something of a rarity to a Vancouverite like myself. This isn't the first time I've tried Memphis Blues - I've had their food catered at a few events I've been at so I was expecting quite a bit. In terms of the experience I expected a lot more. Seems like they save alot on their overhead by forcing customers to order and pay upfront at the counter. When picturing an authentic Southern Style Blues Barbecue I pictured a more classy setup. I went with my girlfriend and the rest of my fam for our first time so we tried the platter called the Elvis. The food came and went surprisingly fast. The Ribs and Flank were the two best parts of the platter. The rest of the dish was trumped a week earlier by my friend Connor who makes a mean Southern Style dish. For the only restaurant of its type in Vancouver it definitely draws a crowd and can can satisfy anyone who has an appetite for Southern BBQ. Literally the best southern style bbq place I have ever tried in Vancouver. It reminds me of "Famous Daves" in America and it is most definitely for the meat lover! My family of 6 went for lunch and ordered the "Elvis Platter" and it was so filling! It is supposed to serve 4-6 people but I personally think it can even serve 7. Valentines is for lovers... meat lovers... When my hubby asked me what I wanted to do for Valentines, I asked him if we could go to Memphis Blues again. Yes. I've been to Memphis Blues before for Valentines... You could spend $40 on an entree (like last year at the Keg) or you can spend $45 on a platter of meat. A PLATTER OF MEAT. Platter it is. That night, the Memphis Platter was on special, it came with dessert. So when we walked in, there were like three tables left. After we sat down, the lineup started. We ordered the Memphis Platter because we like variety. My hubby told me that they ran out of chicken and substituted it with more pulled pork. Cool beans. The table beside us said they ran out of ribs too... I'm glad we beat the rush. So double pulled pork, rib ends, four ribs, brisket, sausage, beans, potato salad, coleslaw, cornbread, fries and a bowl of bbq sauce. The food is always consistent. I love the smoked sausage. Honestly, we should have gotten a pulled pork meal and a sausage meal... could have saved $15, but then what I would I bring home and eat the next day? The platter fed us for two days. So this past Monday I decided to give it a shot. I arrived at about 6:50pm to find the restaurant empty... a hopeful sign that they had plenty of ribs left. I asked about the all you can eat ribs and if they came with fries or any other sides. I was told that they came with fries and it was 22 dollars for the special with a 1 hour time limit. I happily ordered and awaited my first plate of ribs. I had visions of eating at least three racks, after all there was no other customers so I didn't think they were going to run out. My first plate came and there was about a half rack of ribs and giant mountain of fries. The clerk was nice and said "I gave you extra fries" which I thought was nice... The ribs had been pre-cut some time before they were served, and had dried out. They were also not trimmed at all so the ends were full of cartilage, not to be unexpected with all you can eat, but this next part shocked me... I finished my ribs and ordered another plate of ribs. I specifically asked for more ribs only. A different server than the first guy brought my next plate, with 4 ribs and another big pile of fries. I said to him I didn't want more fries, just more ribs, I was still working on the first pile. That was when he told me "They come with fries, and you have to finish the fries before you can order more". This was apparently the manager, according to the other servers I asked. The ribs on the second plate were also pre cut, dry and not even warm. I gave up and left still hungry for ribs but full of french fries... I love Memphis Blues fries, the way they toss them with the rub instead of salt, and they are always just the right amount of crispy... BUT I went for all you can eat ribs... I paid 22 bucks plus tax and tip for ALL YOU CAN EAT RIBS... I was served pre-cut, cold, dry ribs and told I couldn't have all I could eat ribs unless I ate my veggies. That's not how ALL YOU CAN EAT RIBS is supposed to work.. the only fine print was a 1hr time limit... I am not ready to give up yet, I will try the rib night again at another location. Hopefully it was an isolated incident, but here I am 2 days later and writing a review, so it made an impression. read more

Something about Memphis Blues seems to clash with the vibe on the Drive. I dunno what it is... blatant tribute to American-style carnivorous gluttony? This location of the BBQ joint features a nice sidewalk patio and more open space than the original Broadway location. Food tastes about the same as far as I'm concerned. Sometimes it's good to know there's a place like this in the neighborhood if you're not feeling too eclectic or multi-cultural. read more

Holla at me corn bread! Oh my yum. A great little joint for some authentic down-south cooking. Pulled pork, BBQ chicken, beef brisket, and perhaps a side of heart attack? Certainly not a spot for the calorie concerned. But damn, it's tasty. read more

I feel deep shame that I haven't been here in over 5 years. The memory of delicious meats, beer and cornbread has been grilled into my memory for all these years. Get it..grilled? We ordered the Elvis platter between 4 of us, and it was SO MUCH MEAT! I feel like Nick Offerman would be a regular here. Fast service, and with smells that good coming out of the kitchen, it better be fast or I'm coming in there. Great for groups of people, just come in and feast like Vikings. OK My bad !!!! I just love their Pulled Pork. I barely eat meat ( health and politic reasons) but when I feel like eating meat, Menphis it is for their beautiful Pulled Pork. My BF and I got the Menphis Feast, and it is huge as usual, enough for 4 people. The service is excellent and the atmosphere make you feel like home. The fries are so good too ;-) Will go back for my monthly fix ;-) read more
