So I walked into this place hoping to get some good home cook food. What I got instead was very expensive food soaking in grease and butter. So I ordered grill fish, cabbage, green beans and macaroni which came with toast soaking in butter. The meal cost $18 bucks before a soda was added which was another $2.50, plus tax. The fish was salty yet bland as can be and the macaroni was greasy as was the cabbage. The toast was uneatable! The green beans contained sausage that was rough and seemed very bad for one's health. The whole meal seemed greasy and left me with a terrible headache and hole in my pocket. I would suggest that one avoid this place like the plague! Also watch out for the clientele that lurks outside of this establishment at night especially if you have an expensive car. Horrible place! should be called grease in bucket! read more

while i waited for a taxi at MSY i was given a pamphlet of suggested nola attractions. my cab driver offered me his daughter for new year's because she was fighting with her fiancee, but instead of listening i flipped through the pamphlet and was gripped by a hi-res image of a fried shrimp on the page dedicated to 'melba's'. by coincidence melba's was a short distance from lindsey's, so we walked over after everyone else finally went home. i couldn't eat an entire 30 shrimp po-boy, so i got a bun instead and looked over the shoulder of a man playing video poker while it was dressed. lindsey's neighbor amira ordered spicy corn cobs and a large gumbo, and lindsey decided not to get anything bc she prefers boiled shrimp, and melba's only serves it fried. makes sense for a place that has a 24 hour laundromat attached to it. amira was aghast when i counted 30 shrimps on my bun saying, "i'm going to get the buns from now on." (she bought a po-boy a few days later and texted lindsey that she counted 30 shrimps on it.) i was drunk when i left the strange bar, and stumbled through the deteriorated streets before observing the landmark glow of melba's. unlike a fly, i was attracted to the light of its sign and walked straight inside instead of circling around it. after i ordered the chicken basket i was told, "you're going to have to wait for your chicken to be ready, sir." i bought sepia tone vial shot for a dollar at the counter, and looked over the shoulder of a man playing video poker with my eyes closed as i waited for my chicken to be fried. i burned my lips on the chicken as i hastily ate it on lindsey's porch, for the first time wishing there wasn't so much chicken for such an affordable price. amira appeared from next door, herself en route to melba's. she was titillated for the variety that awaited her, and though she claimed that she wanted to cook more, it was clear that once infected by the fare of melba's the pull could not be resisted. i could feel my metabolism slowing as i watched her walk towards that glow. i never saw her again. my last time at melba's was the day my fever surfaced. after walking all day on an empty stomach i reluctantly went to melba's for something "light." the woman at the counter loudly greeted me, saying "How are you today, sir?" i replied, "oh...ugh...i'm not quite ready to order yet." in a bold voice similar to a basic training private she replied, "I only asked you how you were doing today, sir." (why so invasively polite?) i didn't respond. i ordered a small gumbo and the woman behind the counter asked, "Would you like anything else to eat today, sir?" (why so invasive?) listen, i don't need to be reminded in front of a room full of people that i am eating at melba's yet again, ok?! a pint of gumbo is more than any human ever needs to consume, so why would i need to eat anything else today?! you can't POSSibly prove that i'm ACTually going to eat this slop anyWAY and you shouldn't ASSume that i am SIMply going to roll over to yOUR passive aggressive demands and eat this slop gleefully, without deep, personal, regretful reflection!! Best thing on the menu in my opinion is the bbq ribs the meat is tender and sucks right off the bone, the sauce is very tasty as well, the gumbo is tasty has hot sausage, chicken and smoke sausage in it. Serve daiquiris around the clock they are open 24/7. Have specials daily for the daiquiris. The fried chicken wings are always hot and fresh. Has ample inside and outside seating places on either of the two sides of the restaurant. Located in a viby area not difficult to find. Fountain drinks and water are your non alcoholic beverage choices. Menu mostly stays the same regardless of the weather, wont be difficult to choose. Cornbread is a must try when it's hot, it's off the chain good. Huge parking lot in front and back of building. Saw no visible security, area is pretty high traffic seems to be well lit at night. They serve a really strange corn grits its an interesting mixture but I have seen many people order it, it's a bit much for me, looks like ground grits, cream style corn, butter and maybe cheese; it's original that's for sure. I'm so mad. I don't have a washer and dryer so I have no choice, I have to go to Melbas. At LEAST half of the customers and several employees were either not wearing a mask or had it half on and ZERO social distancing. I was there for 3 hours and not one time did I see anyone ask a customer to put their mask on or wipe down & disinfect a table, a machine, a door handle, NOTHING. What the hell??!! Zero signs, zero enforcement, zero cleaning protocols, or any kind social distancing set up or attempt; endangering employees and customer lives. I've been to grocery stores, dr & dentist offices, Uber & cab rides, cafes and this was the first time I was genuinely scared I might get it. Gd I will be pissed if I get covid cause someone was being selfish and didn't want to wear a mask properly or at all. Or because the owners are not doing their jobs. I really appreciate the restaurants that are open, however since being limit to where you can go sit have a meal and do your work. Today I went to this place ,l have been coming here for over 4 years since I move here the food has been always good. The serving good even when it busy, but today has been the worst. Everytime I order Ice tea why do think I drink sweet tea? All Black folks don't drink sweet tea. This guy don't know his name white guy bald on side is the most rudest dude that could ever be in the customers service industry. The breakfast no matter what I get is awful. I will not be going back there ever. I came to the counter twice with him been the only person behind the counter. The late night breakfast is legit. Those pancakes were so fluffy!!!! And the bread pudding..... so amazing. The only problem I had was all the tables were dirty and the trash cans overflowing. Melba's is another one of those NOLA institutions not to be missed. Where else can you get po' boys, hot crawfish, dozens of culinary delights, and simultaneously do your laundry in the attached laundromat? The crew had it going on early, everything is authentic Creole, Soul and Cajun, and every person in there has a certain pride about serving you real NOLA and it shows. We had the grits, both kinds - creamy style and cheesy style, which contains some whole kernel fresh sweet corn, we had crawfish that we had literally watched die for our breakfast, it's serve yourself soft drinks, bevvies and whatnot, food to take or places to sit, happening place because this is where the actual residents eat. The restroom is one size fits all, clean and stocked, even for baby changing. Foodie peeps like my chef son and I could have spent hours in there, enjoying our conversation with the fine folks serving up NOLA Soul. Do visit! read more

I giving it a 3 because my dinning partner liked the food... but to me it is a solid 2. To start off menu is a bit miss leading... online I thought all meals were $10 but the shrimp and grits is actually $14 cause it has seafood. I honestly do not mind the price, as I think shrimp and grits should normally be $16-20... just found it confusing to read! We ate their hot plates not the po- boys so I cannot comment on those, but the food in general did not seem very high quality or fresh to me. I saw a freezer box for "creamy grits" on the counter, and the shrimp in my shrimp and grits tasted way over cooked.... kind of liked they had been cooked and then reheated again. They do give a lot of shrimp put they are small and dry... I would of preferred 5-6 fresh jumbo shrimp instead. In a city that has great seafood the shrimp were just not acceptable to me. The sides also tasted very average :/ I also have to say I was disappointed that everything at this restaurant was in plastic or styrofoam even if you were dinning in! I try to be conscious of the environment and the waste I make- and to me this was such a shame. I always have a reusable to-go box in my car (a glass tupaware) and try to stay away from single use trash as much as possible. It would be much more environmentally friendly to serve food on trays/plates and then offer compostable to go boxes for guest that do not bring their own. Even my dinning partner who liked the food said he would not be back-mostly due to the lack of environmental friendly practices! I guess you could say the "souvenir" plastic cup can be reused... but I normally don't use plastic in my kitchen as a general rule as I am worried about chemicals leaching into my food/liquids especially after a few washes! Also in general the place could use a good scrubbing... floor and chairs were somewhat sticky and we had to change tables because of the flies! There are much better restaurants in the New Orleans area... the only reason to go here would perhaps be to grab a to-go order of their biscuit drops in the middle of the night if you were in dire need of food and everything else was closed! I will give them credit however that according to the pictures on their walls, they do seem very active in giving back to their community! Which I wish more restaurants would do! read more

This place always has a line for a reason. I've been there many times now. The fried chicken is good. Consistently good. I had a shrimp po boy, again good. If I have an event to bring food to, I always bring a tray of their corn grits. People fight over them. I cannot figure out how they perfectly salt those grits. The portions are very fair. Park in the back, it's just easier. The only suggestion I would make is that they have a security person there. It can be a tough crowd. I try not to go during peak hours. read more
