The husband brought the family here, boasting about how great their fusion tacos were. I don't know... He'd been here a few times, usually late at night, right after a gig. Either the cooks are just far better late night, or he was starving, exhausted, and delirious each time. On this day, we had a variety of tacos, and none of them popped. They weren't horrible but surely weren't memorable. Based on the detailed descriptions of the food, I expected more complexity. They fell flat, as did the mocktail I ordered: Louisiana Saturday Night. It tasted like ingredients were missing and they served it to me anyway. The husband was disappointed at this meal, too. Outside of my personal opinions on the food, service was good, atmosphere was nice, and my kiddo enjoyed their kids meal (chicken tenders and fries). Food was good but please take Trinidad out of the "Trinidad street roti". There is nothing Trinidad about it. Not a good mix with tamarind, bell peppers, cauliflower and so called roti. Went to The Rum House on Feb 28, 2026. There was a bit of a wait for a table, so my friends and I decided to just eat at the bar instead of waiting and honestly, it did not disappoint! The bartender was super attentive and made the whole experience really enjoyable. The Ahi Tuna Ceviche is to die for. It was incredibly fresh and full of flavor. Just thinking about it makes me want to go back. I also tried the Island Style "Cuban" steak, which had a really nice sweetness to it. Definitely something I'd recommend trying. If I had to make one complaint just for the sake of making one, it would be the bathrooms. There's only one for each gender, so you might end up waiting on a line. The menu offers a true blend of Mexican, Caribbean, American, and even Indian flavors and highlights a wide selection of inventive tacos. The service was incredible. Lanna, our waitress went above and beyond in every regard. She was observant, friendly, kind and absolutely improved our dinner experience. Plenty of indoor seating with a nice island vibe. Our latest visit to Rum House was easily our worst. The service from the bartender, a man with a beard and long brown hair in a low bun (possibly named Rooney), was astoundingly bad. He was consistently inattentive and rude, directing his poor attitude toward us, other guests, and even his coworkers. At one point, he was openly yelling at the other bartender just steps away from him. What's usually a jovial atmosphere was soured by his presence. His service was pointedly selective. He was blatant about who he would immediately serve and just as obvious about who he chose to ignore. Watching him make eye contact with some while leaving others to sit unacknowledged was disgusting.. We won't be back as long as he is on the staff. read more

I guess there's a certain type of person who loves Rum House. I love the service there, and the ambiance is also pleasant. I love when they have drink specials on certain occasions (like BOGO drinks). What I don't love is the food. I don't know if it's the limited selection of food or the combination of flavors there, but I find that I have a hard time selecting anything that I'd want to eat on the menu, and then when I finally pick something, I feel like I've just settled on what was available and am not impressed by them at all. I can vouch that the queso blanco is pretty good (with or without chorizo). I've tried a trio of their tacos. One was just okay, the others weren't even up to that low bar. I've tried other items, and nothing stands out. I wish I could at least come up with something, but outside of the queso or their drinks? Nada. read more

We had our monthly Boozy Brunch Club brunch here yesterday and it did not disappoint. At 11:30 it was pretty much empty; however by 12:30 it became full pretty quickly. Their drinks are amazing. I love the Rum Punch and Painkller. We decided to try the Rum de Dum Dum which is a 64 oz fish bowl with a mixture of Rums, fruity flavors and a delicious surprise frozen concoction. Love how it came out and it was definitely tasty. All of the food we got was delicious. We had the Nachos, the Big Bites 4 taco combo which is a great way to sample different tacos and the Poblano Chicken Quesadilla which could have had more cheese but was still delicious. The staff are all friendly and inviting. Our server Sydney or Cindy was attentive, helpful and friendly. There are big screen TV's if you want to watch football. Fun times! read more

The Rum House is always consistent and if you can't make it to The Soggy Dollar on the island of Jost Van Dyke (where the Drink the Pain Killer originated) Rum House is the closest thing to the British Virgin Islands! Our go to dishes are the Mango Avocado appetizer. It comes with chips and a little side of salsa. I know it sounds strange but go for it. It's delicious! And as our main dish, we always get the most delicious salad on the menu which to us is the grilled mahi-mahi and hearts of palm salad. It comes with Mixed greens, avocados, toasted walnuts, julienne onions, red peppers, golden raisins, and feta tossed in a mango habanero vinaigrette- YUM! read more

Need a reason to visit New Orleans? Here it is! My favorite restaurant in NOLA and an amazing addition to Magazine street. We stop here every time we are in town and also if we happen to be "passing though". The red curry shrimp are Ah-mazing. Everyone lives the tacos, nachos, apps and great drink selection. Rum house never disappoints. The lamb shank was delicious, tender, and seasoned to perfection. The meat was falling off the bone. Service was top notch. Plenty of outdoor and inside seating space. A must-visit in New Orleans! The Rum House absolutely delivered on flavor and vibes. I ordered the redfish, and it was outstanding -- perfectly seasoned, juicy, and meaty. Every bite was packed with flavor! I also tried the crab balls, and they were delicious and full of real crab (not filler!). I sampled the ribs from someone else's plate and wow -- tender and flavorful, fall-off-the-bone good. The guacamole was super fresh, and the chips were warm and crisp, clearly made in-house. I honestly don't understand the hype and positive reviews for this place, or did I pick a wrong dish or it was just off on that day, it was horrible!! Me n my friend decided to eat lunch here at our recent try to NOLA after looking all the positive reviews, it was a weekday lunch hour, so very few people, weather was pleasant so decided to sit outside, our server was friendly, I asked for the drink recommendation and she recommended their rum punch, I told her I don't like if the drink is too sweet(had a bad experience a night before), and she assured me it was not too sweet, she took our order and within 2mins they bought my drink, that was the red flag already, and the color looked too artificial, took a sip it was soooo sweet with artificial flavors loaded, i strongly believe it was a pre-made drink, I dint take another sip and let my server know, she took back the drink and dint charge me. I ordered taco plate, one flaked fish and the other one jerk chicken, sides sweet potato fries and roasted Rasta veggies and ordered chipotle adobo sauce(there taco plate doesn't come with any sauce, so you have to pay extra for sauce). Jerk chicken taco: there tacos are two bite taco, chicken was dry and flavorless, and they used overly ripe mangoes, that were too sweet, so it had weird taste together. Flaked fish: it was just a tiny piece of mahi mahi, and it was dry and tough, I don't know how they could cook fish so horribly. Sweet potato fries dint had any crispyness but at least edible. Roasted veggies: it was so overcooked flavorless, and I don't think it was made to order, or even if it was roasted on that day. I could see my sauce dint look like a sauce, there were roasted garlic, so asked my server, she dint bother to look at it, and said that's the sauce I ordered, and it was less than a tablespoon, and I was right it was actually garlic chutney, and that's what she had mentioned on my bill, and that's what she put in my order. Overall I wish I could give them a negative star, but have to give one to write a review. read more

Stopped here late afternoon on a Thursday. We both had the 2 taco plate - my partner had fried plantains and coleslaw as his sides. I had the "small salad" as my side - you can pick Caesar or green salad. That side salad was huge! Came tossed with the dressing (creamy garlic) - was lacking a little flavor. I had a fried mahi-mahi fish on one and shredded chili Verde chicken on the other, it comes with two sides I picked roasted veggies and mac & cheese. It was my type of meal I loved every bite. The steak came with a pineapple soy glaze corn stuffing, plantains, and greens my husband thought it was OK. The sweet potato hush puppy with crab seem to have very little crab, but it was very good, the sauce was delicious. The service was OK. It looked like the waitress was new. This awesome spot has a very big diverse menu with options from salads to stews to tacos. I recommend you get the 2 Dat option when ordering the tacos as it's not overwhelming. The champagne is amazing and ideal at $34 a bottle when each class is nine dollars. Emma has got to be one of the kindest people we met while spending time in New Orleans. She's a genuine, wonderful bartender and one of the reasons we love New orleans is for people just like this. A special note if you are a coleslaw fan this is the place for you. It's not too oily. Just, YES. We are vegetarian and the options here are SO GOOD! We ended our walking, self-directed tour of the Garden District at this restaurant and were thrilled. 1. We were desperate to cool off. Their AC was so cool and necessary during the heat wave that we had just spent a couple hours walking through. 2. This place served best rum punch I've ever had. Oh my goodness. Turning down a second one was hard!! 3. I've never had a server who appeared as invested in our order as our guy. I developed an old lady crush on this sweet man! We told him that we are both vegetarians and one is a post bariatric surgery puzzle. He was so sweet and supportive that I would return here weekly if we were local! He made sure we had what we needed. 4. We ordered the roti, two tacos (Rasta & cauliflower) with coconut rice and plantain as the sides. My favorite was the chili glazed shrimp, and Green chili chicken and fried cauliflower were yummy too. They really have the flavor profile down well. Corn tortillas, were a little small, but it hit the spot. This plate is easy to share. Although roasted veggies may not be your first choice as a side, they pair very nicely, are well. Seasoned, and add some much-needed fiber to the meal. The sweet plantains traditional Caribbean and good. My only concern with this experience was the uncomfortable seats. It would have been nice to have some cushion, instead of sitting on the metal chair. I felt like I was slipping after a little while. Overall great vibes! read more

Rum House is a very popular place in New Orleans for good tacos and Margheritas. I've been here a few times in the past and have always enjoyed the food. This time we came closer to closing and were seated outside in the furthest table to the left. The table we sat at was not very well lit and we struggled reading out menus. We got chips and queso to share and for dinner I ended up getting the Taco Trifecta with shrimp tacos and the cornbread dressing. The food is consistently good, I was not disappointed. I asked about salsa but there was an additional charge for that so we opted out. Service: Service was a little slow this night, but it was most likely because it was towards the end of the night and they were winding down. Drinks: The Rum House is known for their Margheritas. They have a huge variety of options. Parking: Street parking on Magazine is paid parking, but the trick is to park a block off of Magazine street for free parking. Solid 4.5 stars. Good drinks and great food. What more can you ask for. If you're looking for a spot outside of the tourist area, Rum House is pretty good. I live in San Diego and we need a place like The Rum House out here. If you're hungry, definitely stack up on the tacos. They're small but packed with flavor.
