Pain Killers!
Sherri B.

Caribbean in the Bayou! Can't ask for much better!! The Rum House is always consistent and if you can't make it to The Soggy Dollar on the island of Jost Van Dyke (where the Drink the Pain Killer originated) Rum House is the closest thing to the British Virgin Islands! Our go to dishes are the Mango Avocado appetizer. It comes with chips and a little side of salsa. I know it sounds strange but go for it. It's delicious! And as our main dish, we always get the most delicious salad on the menu which to us is the grilled mahi-mahi and hearts of palm salad. It comes with Mixed greens, avocados, toasted walnuts, julienne onions, red peppers, golden raisins, and feta tossed in a mango habanero vinaigrette- YUM!

Came here to have a quick meal before carrying on with parade festivities. My partner and I shared the nachos and had a couple of tacos on the side. We also ordered painkillers to drink. Service was great and the food was decent as it wasn't authentic tacos or nachos but more so , Caribbean inspired Mexican style dishes. The drink was really great and definitely would come back and order a pitcher of it.

Went to The Rum House on Feb 28, 2026. There was a bit of a wait for a table, so my friends and I decided to just eat at the bar instead of waiting and honestly, it did not disappoint! The bartender was super attentive and made the whole experience really enjoyable. The Ahi Tuna Ceviche is to die for. It was incredibly fresh and full of flavor. Just thinking about it makes me want to go back. I also tried the Island Style "Cuban" steak, which had a really nice sweetness to it. Definitely something I'd recommend trying. If I had to make one complaint just for the sake of making one, it would be the bathrooms. There's only one for each gender, so you might end up waiting on a line. Overall, it was a great experience with good food, good service, and a fun vibe. I'd definitely go back.

Need a reason to visit New Orleans? Here it is! My favorite restaurant in NOLA and an amazing addition to Magazine street. We stop here every time we are in town and also if we happen to be "passing though". The red curry shrimp are Ah-mazing. Everyone lives the tacos, nachos, apps and great drink selection. Staff are always super friendly and welcoming. The decor is so cute and we love the addition of patio seating as well. Thank you for being delicious and consistent every visit over the years. Also please never leave.

Came in and sat at the bar and was served quickly with a lot of great snacks. Area is great and staff are very attentive! The dishes are a great way to experience the local culture.

I guess there's a certain type of person who loves Rum House. I love the service there, and the ambiance is also pleasant. I love when they have drink specials on certain occasions (like BOGO drinks). What I don't love is the food. I don't know if it's the limited selection of food or the combination of flavors there, but I find that I have a hard time selecting anything that I'd want to eat on the menu, and then when I finally pick something, I feel like I've just settled on what was available and am not impressed by them at all. I can vouch that the queso blanco is pretty good (with or without chorizo). I've tried a trio of their tacos. One was just okay, the others weren't even up to that low bar. I've tried other items, and nothing stands out. I wish I could at least come up with something, but outside of the queso or their drinks? Nada.

Rum house never disappoints. The lamb shank was delicious, tender, and seasoned to perfection. The meat was falling off the bone. Service was top notch. Plenty of outdoor and inside seating space. Great place to people watch on Magazine if you decide to eat outside. I had the pain killer drink it was delicious and refreshing. The line for the bathroom does get a little bit long. I will definitely be back next time I am visiting Nola.

We had our monthly Boozy Brunch Club brunch here yesterday and it did not disappoint. At 11:30 it was pretty much empty; however by 12:30 it became full pretty quickly. Their drinks are amazing. I love the Rum Punch and Painkller. We decided to try the Rum de Dum Dum which is a 64 oz fish bowl with a mixture of Rums, fruity flavors and a delicious surprise frozen concoction. Love how it came out and it was definitely tasty. All of the food we got was delicious. We had the Nachos, the Big Bites 4 taco combo which is a great way to sample different tacos and the Poblano Chicken Quesadilla which could have had more cheese but was still delicious. The staff are all friendly and inviting. Our server Sydney or Cindy was attentive, helpful and friendly. There are big screen TV's if you want to watch football. Fun times!

One of the best places in the city to get authentic, quality non-traditional food, meaning not "New Orleans-known" type food. What I love about this is Caribbean foods really are part of Nola's historical makeup--plus that when you try this place, you realize it's such a great menu and experience. Service is great, drinks are specially designed and crafted as well. On a warm day, try their frozen Blueberry Hill Mojito-- slamming, refreshing -and potent- drink!

The Rum House has one of my favorite happy hours around. You really only need one drink because they're strong. My favorite is the rum punch but my friends love the pain killer. The food is also so good. I always have to order the plantains. The vibe is very chill and service is great. There's outside seating as well.

A must-visit in New Orleans! The Rum House absolutely delivered on flavor and vibes. I ordered the redfish, and it was outstanding -- perfectly seasoned, juicy, and meaty. Every bite was packed with flavor! I also tried the crab balls, and they were delicious and full of real crab (not filler!). I sampled the ribs from someone else's plate and wow -- tender and flavorful, fall-off-the-bone good. The guacamole was super fresh, and the chips were warm and crisp, clearly made in-house. And of course, you can't go wrong with their Hurricanes -- strong, smooth, and dangerously good Definitely adding this spot to my go-to list every time I'm in NOLA.

This restaurant was excellent. I loved my two taco combo. I had a fried mahi-mahi fish on one and shredded chili Verde chicken on the other, it comes with two sides I picked roasted veggies and mac & cheese. It was my type of meal I loved every bite. The steak came with a pineapple soy glaze corn stuffing, plantains, and greens my husband thought it was OK. The sweet potato hush puppy with crab seem to have very little crab, but it was very good, the sauce was delicious. The service was OK. It looked like the waitress was new. It is the perfect place to have a family dinner or a night out with your friends. Definitely check it out. I will be back!

Surprisingly, this ended up being one of my absolute favorite meals in NOLA! I got the two-taco plate with the Duck Duck Goose and Calypso Beef--WOW. Both were ridiculously good, and I eat a lot of tacos, so I don't say that lightly. It's been a full week, and I am still thinking about them. That's how you know it's real. Our server, Catelyn, was awesome--friendly, attentive, and totally on top of things. If by some chance she's reading this, Catelyn, I really hope you check out my book recommendation, The Bees. If you love tacos as much as I do, you'll love a book about the dramatic inner workings of a beehive... probably. Hubbs had the shrimp curry - I don't love seafood, but he liked it. Anyway, if you're in NOLA and love tacos, don't skip this spot. And if you're torn on what to order--just trust me and get the Duck Duck Goose. You can thank me later.

The tacos are very small but tasty. Service was good on a recent visit. The semitropical vibe is cool.

Ask the Community - The Rum House

Does rum house have a happy hour?

Yes. 3-6 weekdays except Tuesdays (Taco Tuesday).

How does your taco Tuesday work? Prices and times please. Thanks

Hi! We have our taco Tuesday specials each Tuesday (excluding holidays) We offer $3 Tacos, $3 Beers & $5 House Margaritas

Are you guys still doing happy hour? If so, what days and what times? TIA

We currently are not. We will post any updates to our FB and Instagram pages so be sure to follow along! Thanks

Hello. Are you guys currently open?

Yes! Weekdays 11-9 and Weekends 9-9.

With co-vid, can you dine-in?

Yes! We have counter service with inside and outside dining available.

How long is the typical wait?

Depends on when you go. I've been seated within 5 mins when I get there for lunch or early dinner. Taco Tuesday dinner you can expect a longer wait, I'd say average 20-40 mins but they give you a pager with pretty decent range.

Spending so much time in New York, I've probably had better, but the food here is still good. This is a small chain (NOLA, Metairie, Baton Rouge, West Palm Beach), outfitted with neon, murals, and pink flowers. The menus are high tech and light up when you open them. We started with the queso fundido, with melted mozzarella, chorizo, pico de gallo, and microgreens. Comes with corn or flour tortillas. It was cheesy and tasted great. They also provide chips and a flight of three salsas. Salsas all had completely different flavors and spice levels, so I enjoyed that. Other options are guacamole (with or without short rib), plain queso dip, short rib bites, and oysters rockefeller. Selections include various tacos. I had the birria tacos, which are served in a dramatic fashion, hanging from a line over the tray, which contained the consomme, salsas, rice, and refried beans. They were juicy and savory and the accompaniments hit the spot. Though I've probably had better birria elsewhere . . . not sure you'll find any better or authentic anywhere in New Orleans. My husband had the fish tacos (ensenada), crispy and covered in cilantro, payo, pickled cabbage, avocado, and pico de gallo. The fish was light and the pickled slaw added just the right amount of brightness and acidity. They also have mushroom tacos, chicken, bone marrow wagyu, carnitas, shrimp, and more. They serve larger main dishes including fajitas, carne asada, barbacoa, burritos, enchiladas, and more. They have a great drink menu with the expected margaritas and mezcal as well as some fancy specialty drinks. I has the Hasta el Agua Del Florero, which is vodka, bombay, lemon juice, pineapple juice, and watermelon syrup. It was good, but also 20 dollars. The margaritas of course come a little cheaper at 13 bucks and are decent. Some people complained about service. It wasn't busy when we stopped in, but our server stayed on top of things, the table was always bussed, he kept checking to make sure everything was to our liking. We had no server issues at all. Not sure this would be the top of my list to try of all the choices in New Orleans, but not a bad choice if you're in the mood for a Taco Tuesday or some Mexican chow.

Fresh seafood from the Gulf of MEXICO and a wicked drink menu. They offer several ceviches. Tapas include guacamole, empanadas, crawfish queso, fish dip and veggie salads like crispy cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. We had the crispy cauliflower served with tempura, cashew habanero crema, garbanzo hash, and chimichurri. Loads of flavor and just the right bite size for tapas/apps. Plates include churrasco, fish and grits, paella (can be served veggie or without shellfish if you're allergic), lamb, Yucatan style pork, shrimp or steak mofongo, and chicken poblano. I had the churrasco, served with papas bravas. Steak cooked perfectly and seasoned perfectly. My husband had the steak mofongo and the beef tips, like the churrasco, were seasoned perfectly. The plantain mash was sweet and somehow savory at the same time. We loved both dishes. They make mean margaritas and caipirinhas hre, and also offer drinks like the paloma, the Bolivian sour, sangria, and specialty drinks. Service was amazing. She was so upbeat and helpful.
