It is a typical self-serve style bakery, and the cashier will box and ring you up when you're done. Etiquette here - grab a tray, paper liner, and tongs. Use the tongs to grab your pastries, and give the tongs and tray to the cashier to pack up your order. Breakfast in Kent, Washington... Since I was at the Great Wall Mall, I thought that I should get something to eat... like breakfast... One of the only businesses open early was Mei Wa Bakery. I walked around the takeout shop and looked at the cookies, cakes, and pastries. It was stuffed with all kinds of goodies - even a display wedding cake on the top shelf! I decided on some shrimp and chives dumplings, a Portuguese Egg Tart and a regular custard tart. I packed my own takeout container, noting that each container had a fee. I squeezed my 2 tarts in the same container as the shrimp dumplings... LOL! The clerk had to give me instructions on where to put the used tongs... She wasn't overly helpful... After I paid, I found a bench in the mall to taste everything. The shrimp dumplings were ok. They had small bits of water chestnut in them. The wrapper was on the thicker side and the shrimps were chopped up. The flavor wasn't memorable. The Portuguese Egg Tart, of course, was better than the regular tart. The crust was a bit butterier, tastier, and crisper. The custard was yummier, too, but not the best ever. The regular tart was more on the bland side and the crust was almost like a dry shortbread. Overall, it was a satisfactory experience. It cured my hunger, but wasn't exceptional. read more

I've actually been here many times when I was little, back then when they still did soft-serve ice cream and I'd always get it in a cone right after grinding at the now-obsolete arcade setup that was inside the Great Wall Shopping Mall. This time I came for their pastries and I'm kinda sad I didn't have them much earlier! I came here on a Saturday noon after getting groceries at Ranch 99 to grab myself some lunch, and wow they still have as many pastries as I remember! They also have some dim sum items like chicken buns off to the right-hand side. For this visit I got the hot dog bun and the cheese bun, both being savory buns instead of the sweet ones I usually get. I'm probably not gonna have two buns for lunch next time since it's too much, but I loved having each one. The hot dog bun has a bunch of melted cheese on top, therefore making the bread just as cheesy, and the hot dog itself complemented that. The cheese bun almost tasted like a pizza in a bun, and had a similar taste profile to the hot dog bun. Dare I say that this bakery's savory items are actually better than the ones in Ranch 99's bakery since I've had their hot dog buns as well. For sure I'm coming back here for more of their pastries when I'm around the area! read more

I've picked up pastries here a few times--last time a couple weeks ago. Out of the items I've tried, they do a few things pretty well here: 1) curry beef puff/bun: savory filling in a good-sized serving,, 2) the steamed white rice cake: moist and bouncy, on the sweeter side though the simple flavor carries this sweet snack, and 3) the matcha mochi with red bean filling, they taste kinda how they look--plump and very Q (bouncy&chewy) mochi with a decently strong matcha flavor, rolled in coconut shavings with lots of filling inside. The egg tarts are on the smaller side compared to other bakeries, and flavor is ok. The staff is generally polite and direct. The other items I've tried include roast pork, custard, taro, hotdog buns, which are fairly average. At the front of the store they have steamed buns too though I haven't tried them yet. The store is pretty small so they don't have as much selection as some larger bakeries though I appreciate that it exists and can satisfy a craving when I've been in the area. Good baked char siu boa! On the sweet side (kids loved), fresh, still warm, sticky and a little crust like firmness on top, soft inside and bottom. Mee Sum Bakery is still my favorite but this was equally as good, little bit smaller but I would still categorize as LARGE. And it was cheaper and easier to get to than Mee Sum. Shumai also good. Dan tat good. Not a fan of the har gow, something mealy about the texture of the wrapping. I'll skip it next time. I shall return! read more

This is a mixed review to reflect that there are some stand-outs as well as some "ehh" aspects to Mei Wa. So for the highlights, the staff are pretty nice here. Some say hello, checkout is quick, and I appreciate that the self-service feels like it has an honor system to it. I don't feel hawk eyes watching me as I go from the bakery to the dim sum area with my Styrofoam container in hand, and it's fine navigating and taking your time before heading up to the counter. It would be nice if they had paper bags or taller containers, especially for the baked goods. I usually come here for the green onion buns. They're so good! They're fluffy, glazed slightly, savory and sweet, and are about the size of a hand. The cocktail buns have a sweet filling and slightly sweet bread - maybe not as fluffy or soft as one might expect. The shu mai here is okay and they give plenty of soy sauce or chili sauce upon request. I think, comparatively, it's decently-priced enough to allow for sampling of other dim sum should you be curious. So as for the "ehh" parts - I found the almond cookie and the lotus paste pastry (not the moon cake) to be bland. I also was taken back by the pastry costing at least $3 but that might be because it's pure(?) lotus paste inside? Compared to the moon cakes sold in the front for $8, you could consider their pastry as a budget moon cake or to sample what you could be getting yourself into if you are buying the $50+ moon cake sets. The bak hong gou (steamed rice cakes) could be a bit sweeter and the oily exterior kind of detracted from the eating experience. The shrimp dumplings are also a bit heavy on the skin but otherwise okay. So overall, there are hits and misses here and there's always something to try because they have a sizeable selection. read more

Mei Wa is the Cantonese Bakery in Great Wall Mall. It's the only standalone bakery in the mall. (Ranch 99 has their own.) I've purchased from here many times by now and have consistently found the foods to be very reliable. Roughly speaking, they offer these categories: 1. Buns, bread-y types - cocktail bun, pineapple bun, savory BBQ pork buns, etc. 2. Crusty baked pastries - wife pastry, red bean pastries, lotus seed paste pastries, etc. 3. Cakes - more of the American style cakes, but done the Asian way, lighter, whipped toppings (not heavy buttercream), often with fruits 4. Large size baos and limited dim sum - The large size baos are very good. I would pass on the dim sum. 5. Misc - Thin almond cookies, paper wrapped sponge cakes I regularly buy amongst 1, 2, and 5. In the past, when I used to take lunch to work, those large size baos are very satisfying. read more

Mei Wa Bakery is a great place to check out for some dumplings, breads and dessert at the Great Wall Mall. I had no idea this place was here until we walked around and saw the long line of people, packing up their own goodies for takeout. The bakery itself is very small, so I waited until some people finished and left before entering. There was always a line of people either getting items or waiting to cash out. I do like that everything here is self-serve, so you can get however many items you need in the takeout containers they have. Also, during COVID-19, they had several tongs for each person to use their own, which you discard when you're done. I bought two egg tarts and two salted egg yolk buns, which was about six bucks. They do charge small a fee if you use a credit card for transactions less than 10 dollars. The items I got were solid. I've had better egg tarts, but they were good, especially when heated up. The salted egg yolk buns were also nice, and like the tarts, were better when heated. Nice to know about this place, as I'd like to try more of their savory items and desserts for when I'm back in the area. read more

The BBQ bun and siu mai was very fatty/tendony, and I wish they had used real salted egg yolks (They used a thousand year old quarters) in the lotus pastry and sticky rice (Just pork and sausage) but I loved everything! The baked goods are solid and they recently had a mini revamp, so it looks even more organized compared to before. They also have the normal egg tarts. We wanted to get dim sum at Imperial Garden but there was a long wait with 18 groups in front of us! It's so much easier to come here as it's grab and go! In the past I've gotten the lotus and red bean pastries since my family are huge fans. They also offer steamed dumplings and other baked goods. I popped two of the Portuguese egg tarts in the oven when I got home and they were very good, flaky crust and tender in the inside! You essentially use tongs to pick up however many items of food you'd like and place them on a tray. Then you can grab a box to place them in after you pay. I believe there is a minimum for card usage/transactions for $10 so best to carry cash when coming to this spot. read more

This bakery is in the strip plaza with Ranch 99. The bakery is just a small store front. It does have everything you need for oriental bakery. It has the cake section with sponge cake and fruit cake. The have 10" size cake on display as well as the slice pieces to go. The pineapple bun (porouh bun) is just average here. However, I like the curry bun here. They are very good. The BBQ bun is fantastic. Enough meat inside. It can be more but enough. The entire store only have one person may be when we visited is late 7 pm. I always stop by this bakery when I am at the Great Wall shopping mall. They have a large Ranch 99 Asian market in the mall too. The bakery is located a few doors down from Ranch 99. They have a variety of Chinese baked buns, cakes and steamed buns too. Even some Dim sum favorites at very reasonable prices. Shrimp balls/dumplings, chive and pork dumplings, lotus leaf wrapped sticky rice with meat and Chinese sausage. They take good care of keeping their store area clean and germ free. The utensils are washed frequently and the service is good. Tip: if the go by their store right before closing time, you can get a 30 percent discount on some of their baked buns. read more

But this has both Hong Kong-style baked goods and Cantonese steamed Bao and Dim Sum available. The selections of both baked goods, bao, and dim sum is very limited and the price is on the higher side compared to Ranch 99 right next door or same bakeries in the area. A lot higher price if compared to the bakeries in California! The store looks clean and organized. The cashier is friendly and attentive.
