    Breakfast in Kent, Washington... Since I was at the Great Wall Mall, I thought that I should get something to eat... like breakfast... One of the only businesses open early was Mei Wa Bakery. I walked around the takeout shop and looked at the cookies, cakes, and pastries. It was stuffed with all kinds of goodies - even a display wedding cake on the top shelf! I decided on some shrimp and chives dumplings, a Portuguese Egg Tart and a regular custard tart. I packed my own takeout container, noting that each container had a fee. I squeezed my 2 tarts in the same container as the shrimp dumplings... LOL! The clerk had to give me instructions on where to put the used tongs... She wasn't overly helpful... After I paid, I found a bench in the mall to taste everything. The shrimp dumplings were ok. They had small bits of water chestnut in them. The wrapper was on the thicker side and the shrimps were chopped up. The flavor wasn't memorable. The Portuguese Egg Tart, of course, was better than the regular tart. The crust was a bit butterier, tastier, and crisper. The custard was yummier, too, but not the best ever. The regular tart was more on the bland side and the crust was almost like a dry shortbread. Overall, it was a satisfactory experience. It cured my hunger, but wasn't exceptional.

    I've actually been here many times when I was little, back then when they still did soft-serve ice cream and I'd always get it in a cone right after grinding at the now-obsolete arcade setup that was inside the Great Wall Shopping Mall. This time I came for their pastries and I'm kinda sad I didn't have them much earlier! I came here on a Saturday noon after getting groceries at Ranch 99 to grab myself some lunch, and wow they still have as many pastries as I remember! They also have some dim sum items like chicken buns off to the right-hand side. For this visit I got the hot dog bun and the cheese bun, both being savory buns instead of the sweet ones I usually get. I'm probably not gonna have two buns for lunch next time since it's too much, but I loved having each one. The hot dog bun has a bunch of melted cheese on top, therefore making the bread just as cheesy, and the hot dog itself complemented that. The cheese bun almost tasted like a pizza in a bun, and had a similar taste profile to the hot dog bun. Dare I say that this bakery's savory items are actually better than the ones in Ranch 99's bakery since I've had their hot dog buns as well. For sure I'm coming back here for more of their pastries when I'm around the area!

    I've picked up pastries here a few times--last time a couple weeks ago. Out of the items I've tried, they do a few things pretty well here: 1) curry beef puff/bun: savory filling in a good-sized serving,, 2) the steamed white rice cake: moist and bouncy, on the sweeter side though the simple flavor carries this sweet snack, and 3) the matcha mochi with red bean filling, they taste kinda how they look--plump and very Q (bouncy&chewy) mochi with a decently strong matcha flavor, rolled in coconut shavings with lots of filling inside. The egg tarts are on the smaller side compared to other bakeries, and flavor is ok. The staff is generally polite and direct. The other items I've tried include roast pork, custard, taro, hotdog buns, which are fairly average. At the front of the store they have steamed buns too though I haven't tried them yet. The store is pretty small so they don't have as much selection as some larger bakeries though I appreciate that it exists and can satisfy a craving when I've been in the area. They take cash and card.

    I got a fluffy, light, and airy taro bun. The woman running the bakery was very nice and helpful. Everything is self serve and easy to figure out. They were out of the vegetable dumplings, unfortunately. I will have to return!

    Good baked char siu boa! On the sweet side (kids loved), fresh, still warm, sticky and a little crust like firmness on top, soft inside and bottom. Mee Sum Bakery is still my favorite but this was equally as good, little bit smaller but I would still categorize as LARGE. And it was cheaper and easier to get to than Mee Sum. Shumai also good. Dan tat good. Not a fan of the har gow, something mealy about the texture of the wrapping. I'll skip it next time. I shall return!

    Right next to Ranch99 is this bakery. Decent selection of baos chicken or pork), pastries, steam dim sum (haw gao, chicken feet). I had the chicken bao- super huge. It was very gingery. It was okay. The dough was nice and fluffy but the filling was minimal. I appreciate that their hot food is hot and their pastries are in a glass/plastic case. It's great for a quick snack/meal. All in all over $27 for 3 sticky rice, 3 buns, 4 sui mai. Quick service. Pay at the front desk after you choose what you want. No seats, chairs - in and out.

    I need more quality self serve dim sum places in my life! Bookmark this place if you're ever near Kent, WA on your next Seattle Trip! Mei Wa Bakery is located near Ranch 99 at the Great Wall Shopping Center! This place has a lot of restaurants to choose from too, but my friend always takes us here to get dim sum and it always hits the spot! Everything is under $10 and the quality is just as good as the dim sum restaurants! I love getting the siu mai, ham sui gok, and no mai gai!

    A nice selection of dim sum but we got lots of steamed buns. I really like their combination of stuff inside the steam bun, but they 100% are deceiving because it's mostly bread and little filling. Especially the one with the Chinese sausage. It was soo good once either got to the meat, but I had to take off all that bun to make the perfect ratio of meat and bread to eat. Good place to try though, just stingy with the filling.

    This is a mixed review to reflect that there are some stand-outs as well as some "ehh" aspects to Mei Wa. So for the highlights, the staff are pretty nice here. Some say hello, checkout is quick, and I appreciate that the self-service feels like it has an honor system to it. I don't feel hawk eyes watching me as I go from the bakery to the dim sum area with my Styrofoam container in hand, and it's fine navigating and taking your time before heading up to the counter. It would be nice if they had paper bags or taller containers, especially for the baked goods. I usually come here for the green onion buns. They're so good! They're fluffy, glazed slightly, savory and sweet, and are about the size of a hand. The cocktail buns have a sweet filling and slightly sweet bread - maybe not as fluffy or soft as one might expect. The shu mai here is okay and they give plenty of soy sauce or chili sauce upon request. I think, comparatively, it's decently-priced enough to allow for sampling of other dim sum should you be curious. So as for the "ehh" parts - I found the almond cookie and the lotus paste pastry (not the moon cake) to be bland. I also was taken back by the pastry costing at least $3 but that might be because it's pure(?) lotus paste inside? Compared to the moon cakes sold in the front for $8, you could consider their pastry as a budget moon cake or to sample what you could be getting yourself into if you are buying the $50+ moon cake sets. The bak hong gou (steamed rice cakes) could be a bit sweeter and the oily exterior kind of detracted from the eating experience. The shrimp dumplings are also a bit heavy on the skin but otherwise okay. So overall, there are hits and misses here and there's always something to try because they have a sizeable selection.

    They have had a glow up recently-they changed their display for their pastries. My tied favorites: Green onion buns-perfect balance of salty, savory and a teeny bit of sweet. Beef bites-so flaky and filling. This was just a quick stop today but we love their pastries and their new shop layout!

    Mei Wa is the Cantonese Bakery in Great Wall Mall. It's the only standalone bakery in the mall. (Ranch 99 has their own.) I've purchased from here many times by now and have consistently found the foods to be very reliable. Roughly speaking, they offer these categories: 1. Buns, bread-y types - cocktail bun, pineapple bun, savory BBQ pork buns, etc. 2. Crusty baked pastries - wife pastry, red bean pastries, lotus seed paste pastries, etc. 3. Cakes - more of the American style cakes, but done the Asian way, lighter, whipped toppings (not heavy buttercream), often with fruits 4. Large size baos and limited dim sum - The large size baos are very good. I would pass on the dim sum. 5. Misc - Thin almond cookies, paper wrapped sponge cakes I regularly buy amongst 1, 2, and 5. In the past, when I used to take lunch to work, those large size baos are very satisfying.

But they lose 3 stars from me because they use some kind of industrial strength cleaning chemical to wipe down the tables. Hard to enjoy your meal when all you can smell is the same chemical they use to mop the floors at QFC. If they are using a spray bottle to clean at the next table, you'll get a cloud of harsh cleaning chemical up your nostrils while you eat. I've had to rinse off and wiped down my own table with a napkin dampened with tea or water in order to enjoy my meal. When I mentioned this to staff, they were dismissive and haven't changed a thing in over a year when I first brought it to their attention. They should only be using something like quat sanitizer, that doesn't smell, to clean the tables. NOT something that is used for floors or bathrooms. and on a side note: if you decide to mop underneath another table while people are dining next to it, please say "excuse me" or just wait. Instead of almost hitting people in the head with a mop handle without saying a word. Also not great for a dining experience. I have worked in restaurants and F&B management. I know something about these things. You shouldn't use anything on a table for diners that you wouldn't use on a food preparation surface. How many times has a dumpling got away from you and bounced around on the table and you snag it and consume it, because you assume the table isn't being cleaned with floor cleaner? If you agree with me, please say something to the staff, and maybe they'll eventually listen. This is a real shame. The food quality is quite good. I might just do take-out from now on. There are other high quality Chinese and Asian dining options, that's the bright side of living in this area.

The handmade noodles were bouncy and perfectly chewy. The beef is definitely the star of this dish, being so freakin tender and flavorful! The bok choy added that freshness and crunch that complemented the soup really well. From the tender meat, the chewy noodles, and the bok choy, this soup is my absolute favorite item here so far. I'd like to try the spicy version next time. The staff were super friendly. The food came out fairly quickly after ordering, and everything was so hot and fresh! I'll definitely be back as I'd like to try the other items they offer.

When I pulled into the lot I knew something was different as I saw someone sitting inside and the place had been takeout only since Covid. The menu was exactly the same, but it was a new owner and she told me she had owned the place since New Years Day. So, it's obviously been more than a year since I decided not to come back. I had the Mongolian Beef and it was pretty good. I'm sure you would love it, but I actually like mine sugar free. That said, it wasn't as sweet as most places, so respect to the chef. The lunch combo was entree, rice and soup. No more spring roll. The hot and sour was ok, but it wasn't thickened and lacked chicken stock. The new owner is really nice and I'm hoping the business comes back. This place used to always be nearly full. I think after 4-5 years of take out only, people stopped coming here. Take out is great, but I prefer dine in. It hotter, fresher and I don't have any trash. Again, when you keep the same name as the previous business, there is no flag to the community that you changed the recipes and possibly have a better menu. Either way, come back, I think you'll be pleased.

Regarding the food, I'd say the price of each dim sum dish is fairly reasonable especially compared to other spots in the Seattle area. One thing that certainly stands out however is the size of the items, I feel like each dim sum item is large and stuffed with delicious fillings, making it much more worth the price point.
