The salad - fresh greens with a tangy house vinaigrette. Also very good. The unfrotunate kicker is that the steak was a little underwhelming - with all the (tasty) sauce on it you didn't get the true beefy flavor. I feel like you can predict the quality of food someone is going to serve you just by the quality of bread they bring out to the table, and this place is no exception. You start out with a basket of hot, thick sourdough bread with room temp butter. Next comes a fresh, crisp salad with halved grape tomatoes and a light vinaigrette. And third, steak with "secret sauce" and a side of fries. Followed by a second helping of steak, "secret sauce" and fries. It's simple and delicious. Secret sauce, in my opinion, seems to be some kind of gravy... I think I may have tasted mushroom somewhere in there. In any case, it's very rich and delicious. I can't think of anything it wouldn't be good on. We ended the night with apple pie a la mode, and that was fantastic, too. If any changes were made to the menu, I would request lighter dessert options -- perhaps a sorbet with fresh fruit or something to that effect. My boyfriend and I were looking forward to trying this restaurant, and decided to go on a whim tonight. It's Sunday of Labor Day weekend and we were surprised to see how busy it was. We were seated and enjoyed the bread and salad course. My only complaint at that point was the volume of the stereo. It was already pretty loud in the restaurant and the music was so loud I found myself shouting across the table. Neither one of us could have anticipated what happened next. As we were waiting for the main course to arrive, the manager came over to tell us...they had run out of steak. We both thought he was joking. If all you serve is one thing on the menu, you should never run out..no matter how busy it gets. What was even more frustrating was that it appeared we were the only table not to get served their meal. He offered to buy us a round of drinks or dessert, but we just wanted dinner. We feel a more appropriate response from the restaurant would have been a credit for a future meal. That would have at least assured them that we would come back. I don't get the allure of this place, but then again I'm a flexitarian pescetarian. I don't need my protein pre-cut...I'm not a child. And I don't need a "second helping" coming around as if I were said growing child at Sunday dinner. Weird to me. Also, coulotte steak is basically cheaper top sirloin. I wonder how many people know this. Another issue I found relevant was the music selection in the dining room. I LOVE hip hop and rap, i'll blast it in my car, but playing uncensored tracks in a restaurant when at least half the patrons have 5-10 year old children in tow seems out of place. Also where is the bar? We asked what kind of booze they had, the reply: vodka, gin, bourbon, scotch... My gin martini with 3 olives came in a brandy snifter. Hmm. I went here for brunch on a Sunday at 11:30am. Lots of tables available, so there was no wait, which was nice. Despite this, however, they refused to seat us until the entire party was present. (Four of six were present and made to wait at the bar, despite about half the tables being free.) The brunch here is a great deal for DC: $25 for bottomless drinks and a single entree off their menu of five options. That said, the orange juice I got didn't seem to be fresh-squeezed, so don't go in with high expectations. I can't speak to the alcoholic drinks. There is also no other menu option if you're not drinking alcohol, so if you're not looking for a boozy brunch, you may want to look elsewhere. I advise that because the food alone will not satisfy you here. I got the "Famous Benedict," which comes with only a single poached egg, unlike most benedicts that come with two. The egg was overcooked, so it did not run like a poached egg should. The toast underneath was very chewy, leading me to believe it was a few days old and had just been reheated. And the fries were so salty as to be nearly inedible. I will say that the steak on my benedict was pretty good. It may have even been excellent, but I couldn't tell with everything else around it being so mediocre. This makes me believe that the restaurant knows how to cook steak and that I should come back to try a different meal here. I can only hope that dinner here is better. The service here was lacking. The food came out decently quick, but our server was slow to take the orders, refill drinks, and clear the plates after the meal. I didn't really factor this into my rating though, because I understand that any server can have a bad day. I did enjoy the ambiance of the restaurant. Cool vibe and nice atmosphere. We, instead, had 4 different types of steak brought out to us: medium rare, medium, medium well & well. One of us had to send the well done one back. My thoughts are that they need to bring the steak out dry & YOU can add the amount of sauce onto it. They put wayyy too much on it which drowned the flavor of the steak. They let us sit even though we were still waiting on one person (we were a party of ~15). We had a couple of servers helping our table so it was managed pretty well. I love this place. Fixed menu makes it easy, especially when it's a menu you like -- steak frites and salad. It's the kiss principle, all the way: sweet and simple. They do it well. The steak is always perfect (I take mine medium rare, and that they do), the salads have just the right dressing, les frites sont parfait, and the sauce, delicieuse. I first discovered Le Relais de l'Entrecote in Paris, France my junior year in college abroad, I was fascinated by its simple, yet flawless formula. L'Entrecote, is a wildly popular Saint Germain du Pres restaurant specializing in only one item - steak frites. There is no menu, just the question of how you'd like your steak cooked and what kind of wine you'd like to drink. In Paris, it works brilliantly. The menu is a prefix consisting of a house salad and the main course - thin, tender slices of steak accompanied by frites, everything drizzled with a creamy peppercorn sauce. The flavor of the sauce is rich and intense, and the extra on the table doesn't last for long. And, if one serving isn't enough, you are served a second portion of steak frites after you finish the first. Sure, you're stuffed afterwards, but it's all for the worthy cause of excellent food. I remember this restaurant so clearly, and have never found anything like it in the US. When I came across Medium Rare, a fairly recent addition to the Cleveland Park neighborhood along Connecticut Ave., I was anxious to try it. The restaurant, owned by Tom Gregg and Mark Bucher (who founded BGR the Burger Joint) is based on the famous Parisian steak frites establishment. I was very impressed with Medium Rare. I loved the dimly lit interior with a bit of romantic French flair. Like l'Entrecote, I also loved the simplicity of the restaurant. I find that such a unique, simple concept is refreshing to diners. So many times do I find myself unable to make a choice, afraid I'm going to order the wrong entrée. Medium Rare follows the same formula as l'Entrecote. First, a salad with buttery lettuce and halved cherry tomatoes, topped with a tasty mustard vinaigrette and accompanied by crusty French bread. The steak, slices of dry-aged cap sirloin, and frites may be served on a surprisingly small plate, but not to worry, there is much more to come. Although both helpings were delicious, my second helping of steak frites was actually better than my first - the steak juicier, the fries crunchier. The sauce, referred to as "sauce secrete" was quite different from l'Entrecote. I found Medium Rare's version smoother and less overpowering than the Parisian restaurant's, but just as enjoyable. So, the ultimate question remains, can a concept like Medium Rare's work in D.C.? I think it most definitely can, as long as diners truly understand the restaurant's concept. For me, it was easy since I have dined at l'Entrecote, but for others, Medium Rare's system could be confusing. Medium Rare never disappoints me. I love that in Cleveland Park I can get a delicious salad, salad, and frites for $20. When was the last time you left a DC restaurant and said, "wow I just got my money's worth?" If you are indecisive like me, you'll love that your only decision to make is how you want your steak cooked. The steaks are served butterflied and in two rounds. I love how hot seconds are on there way to the table when you're finishing round one, and I'm happy to say that my steaks have always been cooked to a perfect medium rare. The fries were disappointingly standard shoe string fries. Our first helping came out luke warm, not particularly crispy nor notably filled with soft potato. I'd dare to compare them to frozen shoe string fries you can get from the supermarket. The steak, which comes sliced and slathered in their secret sauce, was a bit disappointing. For a steak place, I naturally expected this to be an outstanding highlight, but alas, my medium rare steak came out rare. The outside was seared nicely but the inside was just plain raw and difficult to chew to boot. While the sauce was quite tasty, it didn't make up for the steak. Some pros to Medium Rare: pretty satisfactory staff, quick food service, decently priced drink menu, and huge desserts (sharing recommended). I came with a group of six for Sunday brunch. We tried to make reservations beforehand, but apparently 95% of tables are reserved for walk-ins so there's really no need. You can call 30 minutes before you plan to arrive in case there is a waitlist. We sat indoors, but there's also a huge patio if you prefer to dine outdoors. Their Sunday brunch menu is a set menu and a pretty good deal! For $23, you get unlimited drinks (including mimosas, blood marys, coffee and freshly squeezed OJ), fruit salad/green salad/yogurt parfait, and an entree. Before your meal, they give you nice hot crusty bread, which was delicious! I got the green salad and steak and eggs. The green salad was all right, a little too much dressing for my taste. The steak and eggs was decent - I guess I had high expectations since it's apparently "award-winning." Nothing too exciting though. And looking at other people's pictures, it looks like they forgot the sauce for my steak!!!!! However, I did like the fries, which were thin and crispy. Service was quick and efficient. I got a side of mayo, and actually thought it was homemade. The only downside to my meal was the table of absolutely abhorrent Kathy Griffin soundalikes sitting near us. If you like steak, eggs, frites, and bottomless mimosas for brunch this place is for you. The steak is tender, well-seasoned, and juicy. The frites and poached eggs are delicious. At first glance it seems unfitting for a vegetarian but the frites, eggs, and salad are very delicious. The mimosas are not too strong but the servers are true to keeping them bottomless. They bring decanters of mimosa to the table and keep your glass constantly full. The Staff are very friendly and contribute to the overall ambiance of a pleasant brunch experience. Our waiter even encouraged us to stay and enjoy the bottomless mimosas after he collected our bill. When you go to the restroom (as you surely will have to!) french pick up lines re playing in the background. With so many mimosas being consumed one could be fluent by the time they leave. As a big Bloody Mary with Brunch fan I was disappointed by the watered down and rather bland drink they provided. I enjoyed the gravy too, but really, who doesn't like gravy?? Overall the servings were small and you filled up more on frites than the steak. It was also hard to gauge the size of the steak because it was thinly sliced and laid out in a way that made it seem like a larger than it actually was. Went for brunch this past Sunday. Strongly recommend reservations as they are BUSY. Good news is you can enjoy drinks at the bar while you wait. My friend and I had reservations so we were seated immediately. It's $25 for bottomless mimosas, bloody Mary's and screwdrivers and an entree. Friendly and fast service. I had the steak and eggs, which were ok. Highlights were bread and fries, YUMMY. My friend got the sausage entree, she said it was also ok.
