I visited Meat Time tonight with a friend to take advantage of their all-day Happy Hour (HH) from Monday to Thursday. Large restaurant, though we were the only diners at 6pm on a weekday. We ordered almost everything on the HH menu, including the most expensive item--the thick-cut beef tongue ($22 for 2 pieces, or $11 per piece). We came to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. I had never been here before but he has and insisted I'd love it. He was right! Everything was delicious, from the Wagyu fried rice down to the brisket and beef belly. You HAVE to get the egg sauce, it's so tasty with the meat!! We ordered the Teres Major Tender Steak (Wagyu), Yakishabu Brisket with Golden Egg Yolk, Large Beef Intenstine, Pork Belly and a side of white rice. I'm glad we didn't order ayce because it was the perfect portion for us since we didn't have the appetite for ayce. From all of the meats, our favorite was the wagyu. This is my favorite japanese bbq restaurant! I usually get the premium all you can eat and it hits every time!! First off, they have a great selection of meat with different cuts and flavored marinades. The flavored marinades are all delicious and make the meal so much more interesting! A lot of other places give you plain meat with different sauces, but having the meat marinated makes each bite that much more flavorful! I'm also obsessed with their wagyu fried rice. It's garlicky, salty and probably the best fried rice i've eaten in a long time. The restaurant is a grill it yourself type of place. The servers are attentive and very helpful. My one complaint is the restaurant isn't always the cleanest. The main issue is the floors and grill can get pretty greasy. Despite this, it's still my fav spot. There's different ACYE tiers, but TBH I thought it was pricey enough at $48/pp on weekends and $42/pp M-THRS, we did not do the Premium Plan at $64/pp. We did come early enough for HH, so we were able to grab a pitcher of beer for only $18! It was between this or an overrated chain kbbq spot that's been taking Bay Area up a storm. So glad we came here!! I walked out of the ayce that night not feeling sick and bloated compared to other ayce kbbq spots. We did the premium price which allowed us to add Japanese wagyu at lower rates per plate than if we were to do a la carte. Soooooo worth it! Not sure if they're A5, but the wagyu were still buttery good. Their meat quality is top tier, even the American/US wagyu were tender and well prepared. My favorite from the ayce menu were the ootoro kalbi, ichibo - picanha, thick-cut beef tongue and HOKKAIDO scallop (my absolute fav). If we go by brisket standard to compare ayce bbqs! OMG, the way they cut the meat was so well done, the meat was juicy and tender. I echo this sentiment for the other meat options too. They made it easy for us to eat and digest with how simple the marinades were and the bite size of the cuts was equally important. I truly hope this spot will remain lower key. The tables were filled but the vibe was not chaotic and the staff were really nice and attentive. We were going to pay a cork fee of $30 (not bad!), but decided to drink at home instead. Premium Option AYCE yakiniku for $64. They start with 4 meat items on the first round of order and then 1 meat selection per person on the subsequent rounds. Good quality meat, tender and soft. IMHO, the Otoro Kalbi was the best followed by the brisket. Both meaty flavor, very tender. Pork Belly was also good; had bacon taste after grilling. The wagyu fried rice was also pretty good with lots of garlic flavor. It was topped with crispy fried chopped garlic. The rice itself was seasoned with soy sauce. It also had pieces of wagyu meat. I used the yakiniku sauce for most of the meat which complemented the meat really well. Also tried the Egg Yolk sauce which was meant for the brisket; also good. Had the scallop which was good but not as sweet as others I've had. They also have shrimp included on the Premium menu They don't have a big selection of meat and side dishes for the price but quality is good. They had other menu items which can be ordered ala carte like at least 3 different kinds of ramen. Staff were very nice. I think a 3.5 stars is more appropriate. This is the only Japanese Yakiniku AYCE restaurant in the area. Came in on a Thursday with reservations. We were seated promptly. Hiyashi Wakame Salad 4/5: good, but nothing too special here Chilled Eggplant 5/5: very good, tossed in a sauce with garlic Chicken Karaage 5/5: this was very juicy with great flavor in the batter, closest I've had to what I had in Japan Wagyu Fried Rice 5/5: I normally do not order fried rice, but this seemed to be fried in Wagyu fat, with pieces of Wagyu beef with crispy garlic. I enjoyed this very much, but didn't want to get too full on rice. Pro-tip: order half order of this. A quick grill on each side was enough for this to completely just melt in your mouth. Beef Tartare 5/5: This was served with an egg yolk on top, which you break to ooze all over the tartare. This reminded me of Japan. Sauces: Gold Yolk Egg Sauce 5/5: very good, a Sukiyaki style sauce Green Onion Sauce 3/5: good, but very subtle flavor. IMHO it is too delicate to pair with beef. Nanban Miso 5/5: this was very good with jalapeño for a little kick of heat. Hyakumoku Sake 5/5: I'm relatively new to sake, but this one is my wife's new favorite sake. The parking lot was kind of odd- there are a few reserved parking spots in the front but the rest of the parking lot are for the businesses nearby so we had to park in the back. I imagine that parking would be difficult during peak hours. We did the premium AYCE and the food and service exceeded our expectations. They have an a la carte or AYCE menu, but their AYCE is more worth it, in my opinion. There's two AYCE prices from regular (~$40-50) and premium (~$64). We usually get premium since it includes better cuts of meat and you can order from regular, as well. I was very happy to see a legit yakiniku spot in the area. Checked out their menu online, and decided to give them a visit. I was surprised to find that the place offers AYCE. The a la carte price was very high, especially for the wagyu, with very smaller wagyu selections (2 cuts - ribeye sukiyaki or striploin), so we decided for the Premium AYCE menu ($68++). We tried all their Japanese wagyu (4 cuts, with extras $$$), which were all very good quality, maybe a mixed of A4 and A5 ?, and definitely worth the supplement. US prime and American wagyu quality were a let down. The popular cuts such as Karubi, Gyu-tan or Harami were either less marble or not well trimmed when compared to other stores (e.g. Gyu-Kaku or Japanese grocery stores), and didn't live up to the AYCE price tag. If I go back, I'd just focus on re-ordering Japanese wagyu despite the extra fee. Food: 3/5 domestic beef, sauce and marinate can be improved. Service: 5/5 very attentive, friendly, and food came out quickly. Price: 3/5 you need to pay extra for good beef. Overall, great to have yakiniku options in the bay area. I wish this restaurant focuses on offering premium yakiniku experience, with better selections (A5: Zabuton, Mitsuji, Karubi) something like Yoroniku or maybe Jumbo Yakiniku in Japan) instead of trying to go for AYCE. Great place for a dinner with friends. We went on a large group of 10-12 of us and they were able to take our reservation. I would recommend making a reservation if you're trying to go here as it does get super busy! The food quality was really great and I must say the egg sauce was super delicious! It was also my first time trying beef tongue and it was surprisingly very tender and tasty! I'd definitely try it again. Would love to come back soon and bring other people who haven't tried this place yet. read more
