I've heard great things about the meat quality and service at this restaurant, so I had to take my family to try it out. Although a Saturday night, the restaurant wasn't too crowded and we were seated right away. Our server was extremely knowledgeable in helping us choose which meat combo to order, and recommended Beef Combo B over Beef Combo A for our group of 4. We also ordered a seafood pancake for the table, and our server brought out banchan dishes and starter salad for us. This is a premium Korean bbq restaurant, so everything is cooked in front of you by the servers, and you don't have to touch the grill. You can see the wall of meat fridges in the back where they prepare all of the cuts, so you know they take their meat quality seriously! Seating area was decently spacious and each table had their own grill. Our server checked up on us frequently. Beef Combo B: Comes with 3 cuts of beef: brisket, boneless galbi, and marinated boneless "monster" short rib. Also comes with a choice of kimchi or soybean soup. First time visiting the Sunnyvale location and noticed the menu is a bit different from the Oakland spot. We ordered the medium intestine combo with both large and small intestine. Portions here actually felt bigger than what we've had in Oakland, and our server was kind enough to accommodate us with a double portion of large intestine even though she mentioned it normally isn't allowed -- really appreciated that gesture. We also ordered the kalbi jjim. Flavor-wise it was delicious and well prepared, but the portion felt quite small for the $75 price point. Came on a weekday night and got a table immediately. As a party of 2, we decided to order the beef set B but really wanted the tartare (yukhoe) so we got that as well. The tartare was delicious. Although it wasn't served with slices of Korean pear, it held the sweetness of the pears from the marinade and was perfect when paired with a little wasabi. Another new KBBQ spot in South Bay, so of course I'll be giving them a try to report back! Don Blanc is the second location of the Don Blanc is Oakland and they serve beef, pork, and intestines. There are no places in the Bay that serve intestines so I was really excited to see if this place would become my go-to. I was able to make a reservation easily over the phone and we were seated promptly. Our reservation was at 6pm and the restaurant started filling up by 7pm, so I recommend making a reservation during the weekends to ensure you get a table. My party of 6 ordered the pork combo for 3 and the intestine combo for 3. My favorite cut was the pork jowl because it was cut thinner so the edges really crisped up. One of the sauces for the intestines was also really good - I think it was fish sauce based? The kimchi jigae was flavorful and was the perfect accompaniment to the greasy pork. The server also grills the meat for us, which is a nice bonus. Being Korean (and impatient), we were flipping and cutting the meat half the time. Service was friendly and attentive as well. The menu is similar to most KBBQ restaurants with either individual meat items/dishes or by the meat package such as beef or pork. There is complimentary white rice so that's a huge plus. Of course, you get a cook to grill and slice your meats. The vent is pretty strong and sucks up the smoke from the bbq so the scent doesn't linger onto your clothes. The meats are tender and pretty high in quality. Everything is marinated just right and tastes delicious. The set comes with soup so we enjoyed our soybean soup. There is no complimentary scrambled egg or cheesy corn so expect to purchase these separately. My wife and I loved it here so much and will definitely come back again for more. Time and time again, I've been let down by KBBQ options in the Bay Area, and Don Blanc was no exception. We decided to give it a try because of their grand opening deal--prime king galbi for $48 (regularly $80). Honestly, I wouldn't have paid full price for it. The meat quality wasn't impressive and tasted like any other marinated galbi. The Snowflake Boneless Galbi was noticeably better, but at $70 for about 16 pieces, it felt steep. Another drawback was the ventilation--none of the fans were working, which made the dining room very stuffy. On the positive side, service was excellent; the staff cooked everything for us, which is what I prefer over cooking it ourselves. The service was great, they really hustled to cook for us and kept our water and banchan (korean side dishes) topped off. We were so excited an intestine spot opened up here but this place was a huge let down. We got two orders of the large intestine because the pictures from the Oakland location looked small. For the intestine combo, you aren't able to get two of one item, you must choose 3 different items. **SOFT OPENING REVIEW** FOOD Good quality meat and flavorful marinades and sauces. Their beef tartare is one of the better beef tartares I've had at a Korean BBQ restaurant. However, there are a lot of other Korean BBQ restaurants around and I do have a couple of favorites already, so I'm not sure what makes Don Blanc stand above them right now, especially when the price is a bit higher than my favorite KBBQ place. But I guess having another good Korean BBQ place around doesn't hurt. SERVICE I understand they're in soft opening and are probably still working kinks out, but I still will share my thoughts in hopes that things will improve eventually. Service was all over the place. It seemed like nobody was assigned to any tables, and servers just helped whoever waved them down instead of regularly checking up on tables. Everyone was running around and they looked busy just doing everything and anything, but service definitely was not attentive to the tables and it was difficult to wave servers down. I think we had 3 or 4 staff members interact with our table all night, which was really confusing for us and for them. I also was unsure if the servers were supposed to help us grill our food or not. Most of the time we grilled ourselves, but very rarely, a server would come by and grill for us. CONCLUSION Overall, we thought the food was good, but service left much to be desired, especially when it was a later dinner and the restaurant was not full. Came here after seeing an instagram video and hearing about how popular this place is in Oakland! They were still in their soft opening, so there's understandably still some things to work on when it comes to workflow and timely service. Because of that, this review will be *solely* based on their food. Meats: we got the Beef Set A, which comes with your choice of soybean or kimchi stew + prime brisket, marinated bone in LA Galbi, and marinated boneless short rib (jumuluk). Brisket was overall fine; there were some pieces that were really nice and tender, while others were a little chewier. LA Galbi was a standard LA Galbi. My favorite of the trio was the jumuluk, which was very tender and nicely seasoned! Also has a different taste than the LA Galbi--more sesame oil and garlic which I liked. Extras: Soybean stew was standard, and steamed egg was standard though I would have wanted to have more umami flavor to it Sides: the typical banchan you'd find at a Korean restaurant. The total bill + tip came out to about $160ish for the meat set and steamed egg. Overall, when it comes to South Bay KBBQ options, I'd put this in mid-tier for both pricing and quality. It's better and more expensive than AYCE, though also not as mind-blowing (and not as $$$$) as 10 butchers. Seorai and Chungdam are two others that have stood out to me as well though also of course come with a higher price point. They are having their soft opening now and I fear it will get way busier as word spreads. For 4 people, we ordered pork jowl, corn cheese, spicy raw marinated crab, Beef Set A which comes with our choice of kimchi or soybean stew. We chose kimchi stew which wasn't the best imo. We barely touched the stew after tasting it. But the meat was good quality and tasted delicious. We also really enjoyed the spicy raw marinated crab but if you don't have a good spice tolerance, this will be very spicy for you! Their sides were yummy and oh my god they probably have the best japchae around. The servers were super sweet but since they were busy, we had to flip the meat on our own at times. As tables left, they came by multiple times to refill our sides and bring anything we needed. One server saw us struggling with the corn cheese sticking to the hot plate and came to help us scoop it and even commented that she should buy a different hot plate. They're very attentive! It took over the spot where Khan's was which was a shabu shabu and kbbq spot for those who know. The menu has: kbbq, fried chicken, and a pretty big selection of non-bbq items too like cold noodles, budaejigae, galbjjjim, and spicy raw crab, They may still be ramping up as their fried items weren't available when I went on day 3 of opening. We had two adults and a toddler and ordered their combo beef set B (meant for 2-3 ppl) plus an order of the steamed egg. 1st time checking this place out during their soft opening. Saw it on Yelp and figured why not. The vibe was alright, nothing too crazy cute spot but the ambience didn't really stand out. Service was kinda meh. We had to keep asking back and forth just to get utensils, which got a little annoying. I get it's a soft opening, so hopefully they'll smooth things out as they go. Price-wise... yeah, it's definitely on the pricey side. I wouldn't mind if the service and atmosphere matched, but right now it feels a little off balance.
