RESERVATION/HOST I made a reservation for 3 at 7:30PM on a Saturday evening. I'm glad I planned ahead because, upon entering, there were about 5 parties waiting to be seated. My party was greeted warmly and was quickly seated after my reservation was confirmed. SERVICE Very prompt and professional service. The BBQ meats were cooked consistently, and every request was accommodated. FOOD Chungdam focuses on delivering high-quality meats for your Korean BBQ experience. The banchan was delicious! I was surprised that three spicy raw baby crabs were served. To be honest, it was my first time trying it despite hearing about the hype. It paired pretty well with rice. The dressing and condiments were perfect. I appreciated that salt was provided since we ordered all non-marinade meats. The fermented bean curd dip was my favorite. The seafood pancake we ordered took a bit longer to arrive, but it was delicious and crispy! Came here on a Friday night to celebrate my friend's birthday :) I easily made reservations on Yelp and I was able to adjust the time from 6:30PM to 5:45PM the same day. The parking lot is quite small. They share it with a motel and gets packed quickly. I parked more towards the back which is a bit sketch :o The inside of the restaurant is super nice and spacious. Servers were super attentive, although service seemed a bit slow given the holidays. we tried several dishes as listed below. Chungdam galbi 5/5. This seemed like one of their signature meats. Tender and well-marinated. This is a must try. Their version of Galbi-Jjim 5/5 IMO this was just as good as any of the grilled meat dish as a more affordable pricepoint. The shortrib was so tender, coated in their sauce and cheese. It was so comforting, especially given the recent cold weather. Joo-Mul-Luk 5/5 - Outshined by some of the other dishes we ordered this evening. But i'd say these were well seasoned bite sized pieces. Good ratio between the amount of meat to the price point. From the outside the building is inconspicuous, but inside was nicely decorated. From the beautiful orchids and lighting fixtures. Now let me tell you about the food. We had various cuts of meat. Everything there is so competent and precise - the service is great (side note - I wish more places and cultures would adopt the call buttons - I hate trying to flag down waitstaff sometimes). The wagyu Galbi is not now part of the set B in lieu of the Chungdam galbi. The Chungdam Galbi had always been our favorite, but honestly even though we did not order it this time around, everything was still spectacular. The Galbi jjim, ribeye and banchan are all so tender and flavorful. Our family loved the seafood pancake, spicy raw marinated crab that's included with banchan, & seabass. Came here to celebrate my birthday and this place really delivered. The space is clean and modern, and I loved that they have private rooms. It made the night feel special and comfortable. The customer service truly stood out. Our server Sally was amazing. Friendly, attentive, and on top of everything without hovering. At one point the meat was a tad over grilled. It honestly was not an issue to us, but the restaurant immediately stepped in and said they would not serve it that way. They brought out a fresh portion and cooked it to perfection. Chungdam has lightly remodelled since my last visit. Some of the details are still lacking...such as there was paint on adjacent walls, pencil marks from dining table markings etc. Started off with the beef japchae and it was decent. It was filled with beef and mushrooms. The original version with seafood when they first opened was even better. The beef short rib stew was excellent. It's now presented on a cast-iron pan, instead of a cast-iron pot...perhaps shrinkflation? The meat was very tender and flavorful....perhaps even a touch too flavorful. I learned that chungdam is the sister restaurant of seorai which is one of my favorite kbbq spots in the bay. Both are on the pricier end but i think it's definitely worth it for the service (they cook for you) and quality meat. We ordered the combo A which came with the short rib, soybean stew, bibimbap, and glass noodles (meant to serve 2 people). We also ordered the brisket on top of that. We ate most of the food and had a bit of leftovers so I think it was the perfect amount. I won't lie I think I prefer the banchan at Seorai more- however, we got a side of raw marinated crab which was DELICIOUS! The sauce was so yummy. My family and I also really enjoyed the short rib- I think this is a must order here. It was very tender and flavorful. Something I think worth noting is we didn't really smell like kbbq after, which is a huge plus since most places the smell can really linger on your clothes and hair. My friendsand I had a reservation at Chungdam for 6:30pm on a Wednesday. She had been to the restaurant once, but this was my first time at Chungdam. She was also the same friend who introduced me to Seorai, Chungdam's sister restaurant, which I thought was pretty good. Not only did Chungdam meet my expectations, but it also exceeded them. I would go as far as saying that Chungdam was much better than Seorai's. That said, they have different vibes by which Chungdam felt more of an upscale experience. We were seated in one of the private rooms. Perfect for an intimate dinner. Everything about the service was outstanding. Our food came out really fast, and Su Jin, our main server, was the best! The white glove service was real. She helped to portion the servings evenly, and I loved how enthusiastic she was when our food came out. I learned about the ingredients, health benefits, etc... reminded me of an omakase dinner when the server or chef shared a story behind the meal. In general, the other wait staff members were hospitable and highly attentive. My friend, who is Korean, made the suggestion of not doing kbbq like we always do but trying the traditional Korean dishes instead. I was game for whatever, so I let her do the ordering. There wasn't a dish that I didn't like, and I was so glad we had leftovers to take home. Welcome porridge - Loved it, and I can't say I ever had a porridge quite like it. The texture was not like I expected, which was blended and smooth. Banchan - We had the pleasure of getting marinated raw crab as part of our banchan. What a treat! Again, something I've never had before but have always wanted to try. Bone broth - Absolutely fantastic. So rich with umami flavor. My friend said that sometimes it's made with oxtail bones, and I totally got that flavor. Spicy braised short rib with cheese - I think this was Galbi jjim. The beef was very tender, and I loved the fattiness. Cold noodles - Never had it prior, so this was incredibly unique to me. If you love kimchi, then you'll appreciate the flavor. I thought it was cool how they make the noodles in-house. Sea bass - This was Su Jin's favorite dish off the menu, and I could see why. I already love sea bass, which was beautifully plump and flaky, but the marinate for this stew was everything. Chundam has always been my favorite Korean bbq restaurant in the Bay Area because I love their Suwon Kalbi. It's a different style of Kalbi (marinated with salt) that's sweeter and more tender than the more common soy sauce marinated beef from other places. This is a higher end Korean bbq place so expect higher prices and longer wait if you didn't make reservations. During the time when they renovated, 10 Butchers in Sunnyvale open and offered the same Suwon Kalbi. They are both good and I still prefer Chungdam but wouldn't say it's definitively better. Parking on the other hand is kinda annoying as you share parking with model 6 and it looks shady and sometimes can be hard to find parking spots. Service is good as you'd expect from the price. The meal came with complimentary sides, though there weren't as many varieties compared to other Korean spots. Portions are on the smaller side, so I'd recommend ordering an extra dish or two. I really appreciated that the meat was cut in the traditional Seoul style rather than the LA cross-cut. The meat is on the more premium side, but it was worth the price point for higher quality. The ambiance was chic and nice, which made me really happy--there aren't that many Korean BBQ spots around here that match the vibe and quality of places in LA Koreatown, so this was a nice surprise. Been wanting to try this place for awhile, and then other delicious restaurants keep coming up, and the cycle starts over! However, I'm glad I got to try this place. I wouldn't say it's "upscale" but it's very "posh" and "modern" with the interior. I enjoyed the galbi. I loved the omasake style box to present the meat - it was different than the wooden stand I typically see. I liked it. I do like the banchan and thought it was delicious, but my (personal and probably unpopular) opinion is allowing certain things like the fishcake to warm up a little bit and not cold so it doesn't feel like you just pulled it out of the fridge. However, one can argue that because they just pulled it out of the fridge, it's fresh! And I like that feeling. But everything else was good - I enjoyed the mushrooms and the kimchi most. The steamed egg was beautifully presented and the japchae noodles were so good and well seasoned. My friend and I loved it! Service on a weekday dinner was attentive - waters were refilled when we were running low, we were asked how we liked our meats cooked, and our server allowed privacy for conversation and other workers in that section refilled our banchan as needed before we had to ask. I specifically asked do I need to wait if I come over now? He said no waiting line at the moment. I didn't think much, drove there together. We arrived around 5:45 ish and restaurant basically still empty, only two or three tables. We have 5 in total all arrived. But the young Korean guy in reception (I recognized his voice he was the one answered my call) told us there's no table(excuse me???) said all remaining tables are reserved????? WTF????? I told him we can wait if they need time to prepare the table (although restaurant basically empty at that time) but he said can't guarantee the wait time. WTF???????? We ended up eating in a nearby KBBQ and had a nice dinner there. My guests were happy they didn't complain about Chungdam but I can't take this shit. Amazing service at Chungdam. I've been here a few times before, so I booked this for a joint birthday dinner with my sister-in-law. They seated our large party (11 people) in one of their private rooms. We ordered a bunch of plates and different BBQ meats for our table, which included seafood pancake, steamed egg, grilled squid, galbijjim, bibimbap, galbitang, and beef tofu soup. We got about ~7 plates of meat (bulgogi, pork belly, beef tongue, and brisket), which was a perfect amount for us. I love that they cooked on the grill on the other table in the private room, so that we wouldn't have the smell of KBBQ on our clothes. They also brought out lots of banchan for us - I was surprised that that included raw marinated crab. Although, I wish they had some of the staple side dishes like fish cakes, radish kimchi, etc. Everything was cooked very well, full of flavor and spices, meat was super tender. Our server was very sweet and accommodating; she definitely made sure we were taken care of. Lastly, we were celebrating two birthdays, so she brought out a little surprise (chocopies for the table) and sang happy birthday for us. Overall, great place for celebrations and group dinners. Chungdam - Steamed egg - Korean Near Me - Santa Clara, California

Chungdam is a high-end, pricier Korean BBQ spot, but the food is absolutely delicious and on par with 10 Butchers. I especially loved their short rib Suwon Galbi. It is better than their A5 Wagyu, which is good but not the best I have had in the Bay Area. I feel the pricing here is slightly better, though the environment at 10 Butchers feels a bit more polished. Chungdam still delivers top-quality service and food. Every dish is thoughtfully prepared, and the staff make sure you have an excellent dining experience. It is definitely worth visiting if you want fantastic Korean BBQ and attentive service. read more
