I tried to patronize this local business on a weeknight, but struggled to find my way in. The entrance was very unintuitive. I found an open section where people were sitting and dining, and a server asked me if I wanted to dine? "Yes!" I said brightly. "We're sold out" was the reply. Date night at Meat BBQ was a success! We LOVED the smoked wings and trailer park bruschetta! We ended up saving our pulled chicken and pulled pork for sandwiches the next day and it was perfection. My favorite sauce was the Black Magic and my significant other enjoyed the Jazzy Q. I was toying with "build your own" Mac & cheese but after adding extra toppings, it would have been more than I was willing to spend on Mac & cheese, so I settled for a side order with my two meat platter and it was great! Happened to be in Lansing for work and Yelp led us here! To caveat - I'm no smokehead, but I've had some phenomenal Texas BBQ. So, I will be upfront in saying that this is no Franklin or 2M, but it's the best Midwest BBQ I've had so far (no I haven't been to St. Louis yet). It was surprisingly packed for a Wednesday night dinner, so that was a good sign! Our server sat us promptly & food came out quickly. We had the: *Pickle Fries - I can't resist good pickle fries. Meat BBQ's version are truly cut like fries -- no fried spears or pickle chips. I enjoyed the cornmeal breading that added a bit more texture. No complaints on the ranch and or remoulade it was served with! *Lean Brisket Plate with Mac & Cheese, Beans - The brisket was super tender and tasty -- despite me picking a less fatty cut! I wanted the vegetable of the day, which was smoked broccoli, but they were all out already! So, I opted for the mac & cheese, which was good but replaceable. The beans were the sleeper! I was surprised by how flavorful they were and there were nice bits and pieces of smoked meat mixed in. The plate also came with cornbread, which was pretty dang good cornbread - not a dry crumb in sight! *Ribs with Slaw & and Garlic Mashed Potatoes - I only had a nibble of my spouse's dish. The ribs were VERY good though - fall off the bone & nicely seasoned. The slaw & garlic mash were fine. I liked that the slaw wasn't too saturated in mayo. Meat BBQ also has 6 sauces sitting on the table: *Jazzy Q - traditional tomato based BBQ sauce: sweet, tangy with a mild spice - this one was a bit boring to me. I wanted something with a bit more of a kick and/or panache! *Black Magic - Coffee based BBQ: sweet & smokey: you could taste the coffee for sure, but it was overall slightly too sweet for me! *Carolina Mustard - southern style mustard sauce: sweet with a strong dijon bite - I was into this one! *Hot Garlic - Buffalo based hot sauce infused with Garlic: medium to high heat - this one reminded me too much of Frank's Red Hot. I like me some Frank's but there were other more unique, tasty sauces available. *Vin#666 - Vinegar Based Mopping Sauce: thin, Vinegary, Zesty, Mild Spice (perfect for pulled pork) - THIS WAS THE WINNER for us. Loved the flavor. Except it really lives up to 666 because both the hubs and me had some intense heartburn overnight and I usually don't get heartburn. I prefer the meat plates over the sandwiches. Brisket and pulled pork are excellent!! The wings are a must try, trust me. They have a variety of house sauce that are all very impressive and very tasty. Mac N Cheese, Sweet Corn, and Fries are my personal favorites. Corn bread is also very tasty. Full bar with spirits and craft beer. Good bourbon selection and shooters like Fireball. Craft beer in Michigan is some of the best. We're new to the area and Meat BBQ came HIGHLY recommended as we've started asking around. As you might've guessed from the name, this is probably NOT the place to bring your vegetarian friends. (In fact, the "Vegetarian" section of the menu is hilarious- I won't spoil it for you, just check ot when you go!) Basically, this is the kind of place I would take my dad if I wanted him to be in a good mood. He might be a little confused at the quirky decor, but the food is chock-full of meat, delicious, and the prices are reasonable for quality barbeque. I had a generously-sized sandwich (The Miagi with cheese!) and fries where the meat serving was spilling off the sandwich for under $12. My husband and his uncle both had the brisket platters and LOVED them. Garlic mash and spicy cream corn were good. Great side dishes and a good way to change up the flavors of the delicious and huge portion of meat. There are 6 sauces on the table. Co-workers went crazy for the coffee one. It was really good. I also tried the mustard based one and it was delicious as well. I ended up eating most of the brisket without any sauce since it was just so good. Another co-worker got the meat fries. Holy smokes, it was size just a bit bigger than a grocery store apple pie. Fries topped with a bunch of meat, smothered, and I mean smothered in cheese. So much cheese. Really looked like a Mac and cheese. Delicious! Best BBQ in the area. My favorites are the ribs and brisket, both of which can stand alone without sauce, but their sauces are flavorful and go great with the menu. We were here along time ago and thought we'd try it again for dinner last night. I should start by saying that my standards for barbecue, especially brisket, are very high as I've eaten at some of the best places in and around Austin, TX as well as gotten pretty good at smoking my own. I ordered the fatty brisket and hoped for the best - and I was left still hoping. It was a good sized albeit a little thick slice of brisket - first thing I noticed was very little bark and the large fat seem through the middle that hadn't been rendered properly. I had to use the knife to cut it (never a good sign) and it really had very little smoke flavor leaving me wondering what type of cooker they used to cook it as it didn't seem like an offset. It certainly was taken off too early as it wasn't tough but it certainly needed more cooking to get it as tender as brisket should be. The sides were decent and I guess the good news is they had lots of sauce choices which I would never use is the brisket was cooked like it should be. If I had never had barbecue in TX I probably would have liked it better as that point of comparison is what ruined it for me. read more

This place is out of this world amazing! Everything was so flavorful and tasty that I found myself wanting more even though I was so full. For an appetizer, we got Eddie's egg rolls which were served with a sauce on the side. These were a great starter and everyone at the table loved them. I was expecting a lot from this place because I kept on hearing about it. Got in around 2pm, and there was a 30 minute wait for 2 people. After being seated, we looked at the menu. We ordered the meat platter with brisket and added a 1/2 rack of ribs in addition to the wings. We also ordered a full size of Mac and cheese. The two sides we picked were the cream corn and fries. We upgraded the fries to the garlic Parmesan ones at the suggestion of our waitress. Wings--these were I think my favorite part of the meal. They came out well-seasoned, crunchy. I didn't think they really needed the sauce as they were delicious on their own. Ribs-- they're not the fall of the bone types of ribs. More of the smoked kind. I definitely would recommend adding sauce Bc they were a little bit dry on their own. Brisket-- got the fatty cut because...go big or go home, right? I think this might have been the day we went on, but the meat seemed more dry than I would have liked for a fattier cut. Cream corn-- this was delicious! It's not really cream. It's more of a cream cheese mix with corn and a little bit of a spice kick. Garlic Parmesan fries-- was very disappointed by these. It was basically a layer of fries, topped with a lot of Parmesan. I couldn't really taste the garlic. The fries came out cold, and so the taste was not as good as it could have been. I think I would either not order the fries next time or just get them regular. Mac and cheese-- we added bacon and pulled pork to it. To be honest, it was too cheesy for my liking (is this possible?). I think it was the texture of the cheese used. There were clumps of cheese and it just wasn't smooth, if that makes sense. I think I am in the minority when I say this, so take it with a grain of salt! Sauces-- definitely really enjoyed the Carolina mustard and the jazzy Q. The black magic was decent, but I wasn't super blown away by it. The mustard has a nice tanginess to it, and the jazzy q has an upgraded bbq sauce taste! Overall, I would give this place a 3.5/5. I was underwhelmed, but perhaps my expectations were too high given all of the rave reviews. I would still recommend checking it out, especially if you have out of town guests!
