A great stop for these avid BBQ lovers! This place is in Old Town, and has an amazing atmosphere. We beat the dinner rush by getting to the restaurant before 5! After 5, the people came pooling in! The restaurant was very upbeat, and modern! The waitress was good. Just very to the point. We ordered Smoked Wings for an appetizer, and they were delicious! There were several different homemade BBQ choices! The cherry was among the favorites! For our meals, we ordered Brisket, Fries, Mac & Cheese, Pulled Pork, and BBQ Baked Beans. The fries came out steaming hot! They were crispy, and well seasoned! The pork was a bit on the lukewarm side, which made for a semi-drab dinner. The beans were decent, but nothing special. Overall, we'd definitely return for a second time if we're in town again! I gave this 4 stars because the pork wasn't too warm, and the baked beans weren't very flavorful. I like meat bbq. Their food was so good I decided to have them cater my baby's shower. I've been here a few times before, not sure why I haven't written a review. I love the beef brisket, smoked Turkey, and the wings are so good! I always get the Mac n cheese when I come. I don't like is the corn bread. It taste horrible, it's very sweet like cake, and I get the feeling it comes in frozen from Gordon's or someplace. They should take some time to invest in a good cornbread recipe. While traveling in Lansing, my Airbnb host suggested a BBQ place called Meat. I am from Alabama and we take pride in our BBQ. But man, this BBQ joint would put so many BBQ places down south to shame and they would be embarrassed. Meat is located in downtown Lansing. You have to find parking on the street. There is a courtyard, bar area, and dining room. You pick one meat (except ribs) for $15 then can add a 2nd meat for $6 more. Adding a half slab of ribs costs $12 I think. For my entree, I went with fatty brisket, pulled pork, jalepeno cilantro slaw, and blue cheese and bacon potato salad. The fatty brisket was just the way I like - marbled, flavorful bark, and easy to chew. I can say the same about the pulled pork. It was made the way I like as it was tender and seasoned really well. The jalepeno cilantro slaw was chopped and had a mayo base. It definitely had an unique taste with the jalepeno and cilantro. I had never had a potato salad that had blue cheese crumbles and bacon mixed in. .it was a red potato salad. There are 5 sauces - a spicy garlic buffalo sauce better for wings; a mild, tangy tomato base; Black Magic that has a sweet and smoky flavor and I think that it might had worchestershire sauce in it; a vinegar base; and a Carolina mustard with a kick of horseradish. Now I am perplexed by a problem. Why don't people up North like God's good creation of fresh brewed sweet tea? It's very inexpensive to make too! If you can help me solve the problem, let me know. I was charged a $1 for water. I asked the waitress about it because I was like I have never been in a restaurant that charged me money for water. But she explained to me due to COVID, they were spending a lot on plastic cups and had just recently just started using metal trays again. After her explanation, I was ok with paying a $1 for water. In business for about 10 years, it won best new restaurant in 2012, and has been featured on Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and the Big 10 Network food show. i've been there several times over the past few years and have never been disappointed. At my most recent visit I had the brisket sandwich which, as always, was tender and flavorful. They offer a great array of topping sauces (see photos for list of types). The portions are ample. In the past, I've had their ribs, burnt tips, pulled pork, and Texas sausages (not always available). They have an incredible array of custom french fries, as well as very interesting fried pickles and a "BBQ egg roll, " which is stuffed with house made Andouille sausage, pimento cheese and poblano peppers, served with BBQ ranch as appetizers. I was really looking forward to trying Meat after following their Facebook page for sometime. When we got there around 1:30 on a Sunday the place was really busy. We had to wait about 15-20 mins for a seat (I expected it to be longer). When we were seated, we were disappointed to wait about 10 mins for a waitress to come to our table. She came after I flagged down another waitress to ask who was suppose to be waiting on us. A couple of the wait staff just kept walking by us without saying a word. This was disappointing and not a good start to this restaurant that's rated so highly. When our waitress came to our table, she said the hostess was suppose to let her know when she got a table. Apparently she was working two rooms. Even so I would have liked to be acknowledged by the other wait staff - team work!! We ordered right away and we didn't have to wait too long for our food. I ordered the brisket dinner with mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. It was a good sized piece of brisket and it was tender. I would get it again. The mashed potatoes were also very good with garlic and chunks of potatoes. The Mac and cheese had some really good bites with a kick otherwise they were just alright. The meal came with a piece of corn bread that was more like cornbread cake. It wasn't dense like cornbread usually is. Instead it was light and fluffy. It was very good and a good end to the meal. I found it really strange that they don't have butter in the restaurant. They have a variety of potatoes and bread but no butter!! The waitress brought me margarine instead for my bread. Hubby liked his brisket sandwich with coleslaw. He choose fries with it and he enjoyed those also. I think we need to give Meat another try. We weren't as thrilled as we'd hoped. 3.5/5 read more

WOW...just WOW. This place was amazing and I completely understand why it has been featured on Food Network. This is top notch BBQ, and potentially some of the best in the state. I have walked by a few times when in Lansing, but this was my first time giving it a try. Everything from the cool atmosphere, good drink selection, to the food and service was excellent. We were there later in the day, and our server did everything she could to claim some of the last ribs of the day for our table. Luckily, I was able to snag the last half rack of the day, along with some brisket. It was pure food heaven. I was beyond satisfied after this meal. Pro tip: Show up early. It's been some years since I've been here and it was exactly how I remember. The food is always super good and you can taste the quality of the meat that's used in all of the dishes. To bring me back I thought about getting the Boss Log but I went with the recommended Adamizer, that our waitress suggested. Definitely is now my 2nd favorite sandwich there. Five stars for the best brisket I've ever eaten. And brisket isn't even my favorite dish but the chance to get lean vs fatty cut was too much to pass up. I prefer lean and the smoke ring and flavor was excellent. The squirt bottle sauces were flavorful. In town for business, Meat was recommended by a local so stopped in for mid-week dinner. Timing was just right ahead of evening rush so we got a table right away. After on site, realized Meat was featured on Food Network. I was toying with "build your own" Mac & cheese but after adding extra toppings, it would have been more than I was willing to spend on Mac & cheese, so I settled for a side order with my two meat platter and it was great! We were in town for a show at the Wharton Center and decided on this place.. I always like to find quirky little places. Ya know things we won't find at 'home'. So, I will be upfront in saying that this is no Franklin or 2M, but it's the best Midwest BBQ I've had so far (no I haven't been to St. Louis yet). No complaints on the ranch and or remoulade it was served with! *Lean Brisket Plate with Mac & Cheese, Beans - The brisket was super tender and tasty -- despite me picking a less fatty cut! I wanted the vegetable of the day, which was smoked broccoli, but they were all out already! So, I opted for the mac & cheese, which was good but replaceable. The beans were the sleeper! I was surprised by how flavorful they were and there were nice bits and pieces of smoked meat mixed in. The plate also came with cornbread, which was pretty dang good cornbread - not a dry crumb in sight! *Ribs with Slaw & and Garlic Mashed Potatoes - I only had a nibble of my spouse's dish. The ribs were VERY good though - fall off the bone & nicely seasoned. The slaw & garlic mash were fine. I liked that the slaw wasn't too saturated in mayo. Meat BBQ also has 6 sauces sitting on the table: *Jazzy Q - traditional tomato based BBQ sauce: sweet, tangy with a mild spice - this one was a bit boring to me. I wanted something with a bit more of a kick and/or panache! *Black Magic - Coffee based BBQ: sweet & smokey: you could taste the coffee for sure, but it was overall slightly too sweet for me! *Carolina Mustard - southern style mustard sauce: sweet with a strong dijon bite - I was into this one! *Hot Garlic - Buffalo based hot sauce infused with Garlic: medium to high heat - this one reminded me too much of Frank's Red Hot. I like me some Frank's but there were other more unique, tasty sauces available. *Vin#666 - Vinegar Based Mopping Sauce: thin, Vinegary, Zesty, Mild Spice (perfect for pulled pork) - THIS WAS THE WINNER for us. Loved the flavor. Except it really lives up to 666 because both the hubs and me had some intense heartburn overnight and I usually don't get heartburn.
