One of our favorite places in Lansing. The name says it all--lots of options of both smoked meats and BBQ sauces. Everything we've tried has been excellent. Pickle Fries are awesome. And they make one of the best bloody marys I've had (and I've tried a few ;) ). The waitstaff is always friendly and attentive. Service is fast (once you're seated--there's often a wait). We found Meat with my favorite use of yelp: finding unique places to eat when on a road trip. Once again yelp didn't disappoint! Meat is a very unassuming place - with no real plates and paper towels on the table - like any real BBQ joint should have! And indeed the meat doesn't disappoint! We tried several menu items but by far my favorites were the wings and the pulled pork. Their sauces are definitely the stars of the show! Only downside is the minimal seating and very small waiting area. We waited probably 10-15 minutes before anyone even greeted us, but the food made the wait worth it! read more

Was given a recommendation by my wife's friend to try Meat on a recent visit to Lansing. I am here to tell you it is one recommendation I am glad we took. From the old school decor to the fabulous food Meat is one of the best bbq joints I have ever eaten at. The joint was packed at 2 o'clock on a Saturday. We decided to eat at the bar. I ordered a Bloody Mary at it was one of the best I have ever had. I really hate to be the one disenting vote, but this place was not good. The staff was friendly and tried, but on so many levels this place just did not stack up. My wife and I came here, and we have been to BBQ places all over, TX, FL, NC, AL, TN and here. There certainly are differences and different tastes, but this place would finish last. Truly sorry, we WANTED to like it. First the good... the ribs were moist and tender and the pulled pork was at least OK. But the sauces were borderline terrible. They were either way sweet or way hot. Nothing that had any flavor nor was anything that either of us liked... and that is RARE! They have 2 kinds of mac & cheese. The ready prepared was like a leftover from yesterday, no sauce at all. Any cheese had soaked into the (dry) pasta. The baked beans were too "bourbony" and the ranch slaw was salty. I honestly cannot think of one reason to recommend it. And on top of it all, we had to eat with plastic forks. Just not impressed. Great BBQ. The BBQ talk in Southeast Michigan is Slows in Detroit or Woodshop in Clarkston. But if those are too far, Lansing area folks can get comparable (maybe better?) BBQ here at Meat. The ribs were excellent, peeled right off the bone, and you could see the steam flowing out from the bone! Had beans for one of my sides, and they were really good as well. Had bits of meat in it! The beans here are better than Slows' or Woodshop's. Ribs? Not sure which is better, but you can't go wrong with either. read more

This place should be called "sides" instead of "meat" because the side dishes are outstanding. The meat? Not so much. During two visits, everyone in our party loved the mac and cheese, the baked beans, the fries, the cornbread and all the sides, but nobody had decent meat. The ribs were fatty and undercooked, the other meats were either tasteless or greasy. During both visits, and with our take-out order, we were given no sauces despite multiple requests. Don't know if the wings were as bad as they seemed or if it was just because we had no sauce. Cute place and nice staff though. Hope we just hit two bad nights. read more

I have been here twice now and have thoroughly enjoyed it both times. The restaurant has a unique, tough-guy bar atmosphere (fitting for its brand and cuisine). The food is very good and they always provide you with a TON of it. They have a pretty good beer selection as well. Only thing is, last time I went they started running out of food and had to turn people away. I'm not sure if this is something that happens often, though. This is the best place I think I've ever eaten at. I took my husband here for his birthday and the food was amazing. The double heifer was so good! The most memorable though was there drink, I believe it was something along the lines of "not your grandmas apple pie", this drink was incredible! It legitimately tasted like apple pie! My absolute favorite restaurant. Their beef brisket is my favorite standalone meat and their made to order Mac & Cheese allows for my single favorite entree of all-time (with 2x beef brisket). Their wings are absolutely incredible, sides are fantastic (my personal favorite is the jalapeño slaw). If there was a 4.5 star option that is what I would give meat. It was really good but I wasn't wow'ed by anything except the bill. Everything we got including the sides was very good. I will tell you that you need to get there early. My wife and I got there at 5:15 pm and they were already out of the seasonal side. If you show up late (after 8) don't be surprised if the menu is more limited. You have been warned. But don't give this place a bad review because they ran out of a certain item. That simply means they stock only the freshest ingredients (which they do) and don't want anything to go to waste; you need to get over your entitled 'Murica attitude and come back another day. Restaurants that do this are common in many other countries where more value is placed on quality ingredients and waste is frowned upon. The food was fairly decent BBQ, this coming from an individual that is an avid Barbequer. The sauces were not bad. The hot was my favorite followed up by the cherry. The sweeter sauces were a little too fruity without much bite to accompany the smoked pulled pork. However, the service (as noted by other posts) was horrible. A friend and I went there for lunch and we ended up seeing his fiance there with her friend. So we sat down with them. This confused the waitresses and it was 30 minutes before we had our drink order or food order. It was another 15 before we received our drinks after asking another waitress. The story was that the computer was down or they were trying to learn the new system. Also, it took forever to pay and get my card back. Overall, it took an hour and a half to have a 30 minute meal. So, if you are planning to eat here, note the food is good (little overpriced) but do not schedule anything after or you may be disappointed. read more

This place is phenomenal! My first time in Michigan and I needed to try some local spots and Meat fit the bill. We went later on a Sunday so they were out of ribs but everything that they had left was great. The portions are large and none of us were able to finish. My son got the double heifer and the brisket was so juicy and melted in his mouth. I had the meat fries and they were delicious. There are six different dipping sauces to try and a wide variety of beer to choose from and to top it off great service. read more

Ok, people, here's the thing. The place has a personal, home grown feeling and it's small. Everything is smoked and prepared on site. Once they run out of something, it's gone. Once they run out of food, they close. It sucks when you're looking forward to it and that happens. But it does happen. They recently got another smoker and they can create more delicious meats so hopefully that won't be as much of an issue in the future. Sure, the closed sign may still show up from time to time. 4 people for late lunch: I've been to a lot of other BBQ places in Memphis, St Louis, Chicago, Kansas City, Texas... (not bragging, just honest) And overall this was pretty good by comparison. Not the best mind you, but pretty good. And for Lansing to have a local BBQ place that's pretty good compared to the other locales mentioned earlier, that makes Meat pretty damn good unless your into driving several hours to Chicago for lunch... * food turnaround time was very good * service was friendly and helpful * space was at a minimum * overall food was very good ** ribs not available till 4 usually :( ** brisket=awesome ** wings=very good ** sausage= very good ** beans and cole slaw very good ** Mac n Cheese very good ** seasoned fries very good ** sauces (4) all were good but the sweet med/hot was the best One bad thing: credit card was ran twice for some reason, only found out about a day later when the wife checked the statement online. called and spoke to manager, he stated it had happened to about 50 people so far, wasn't sure what was causing it. He said, if it didn't drop off off in a few days to call them back. It took a week to drop off. Weird thing is, it was for the original amount of the bill w/o tip, and then a second charge with tip included. Not good. :( overall a 4 out of 5 - one slap on the wrist for the cc foul up which hopefully will get cleared up. But going back soon, will see how it goes. read more

This place is usually pretty good, but I went there a week ago and got incredibly sick. I wouldn't usually assume this was from a restaurant, but I had leftovers the next day and got sick again. After looking at the wings, I noticed there were still feathers on them. Like, a ton of feathers. I ended up throwing the rest of the leftovers away. MMMMEEAATTT!!!! Lotsa Meat! OK, that's their name. The MEAT was pretty good. Based on other reviews here, I tried the Adamizer brisket sandwich although I usually find brisket dry and unexciting. Meat's brisket was juicy, hot, tender. Toppings were tasty So it's too bad that the danged thing came on -- wait for it -- Texas Toast! (a fancy name for thick-sliced white wonder bread) which instantly disintegrated into muck under the juicy filling. They should have served a pile of filling with toast on the side since you end up digging it out of the serving pan with a fork anyway. Or maybe they could just find some kaiser rolls. Companion's pulled pork sandwich was dry and boring. The slaw topping was drippy and limp, so no texture contrast. Only flavor came from pouring on sauce. Side dish choices are all starches. No okra or collard greens that I find in BBQ places in the South. The "seasonal vegetable" was corn with -- cheese! Note to chefs: some of us can't eat dairy and we don't want it lurking in every dish on your menu! I ordered fries which were plentiful but very thin and way too salty. Companion's potato salad was a small amount, chunky & bland; the blue cheese was one chunk the same size as the potato chunks! Pay attention when chopping! Their sauces were good if not great. Mustard sauce was oddly sweet. So 2 stars for decent service, tasty meat, clean sauce containers, and surprisingly clean bathrooms. Penalized 3 stars for flimsy Texas toast, flimsy plastic forks, cheese-and-starch sides and garnishes. Next time I will try the ribs. read more

My girlfriend and I decided to try this place yesterday. The food was amazing! She got the brisket and I got the pulled pork/brisket combo. Each came with our choice of two sides. The meat was extremely tender and flavorful. The sides were really good too. Mac and Cheese was to die for. Fries looked a little soggy, but they tasted great. They included three of their four sauces (we got it to go) and they were each very different from the others. For about $25 we had enough food for each of us to eat twice! read more

The food is wonderful. The service we received on out last visit was not so good. We were told it was a 45 minute wait. Basically we were told that we had to wait for a table that was being occupied by a very inconsiderate family that refused to leave. They stayed long after paying, chatting and drinking water. The staff and manager did nothing to be proactive with the situation, it was very disappointing. An hour and a half later we were finally seated. I went to this restaurant for dinner and it was pricey but great! Our entire table was pleased with their meals and enjoyed the options offered. I got the brisket meatwhich with fries for my meal and it was extremely filling. The fries were seasoned and came as a nice portion. As for sides I would recommend trying the spicy corn and Mac 'n' Cheese. Please note if you go later in the evening they'll likely have run out of some options and (So go early!). Finally tried Meat. Southern B.B.Q. & Carnivore Cuisine Not impressed, overrated. Primary ingredients is salt, salt and more salt. Had their ribs, salty and not much flavor. In and out for a late lunch on a Saturday. Very small, (cozy) and I bumped a few people who were leaning on the door as I was coming in. Had the pulled pork sandwich no slaw, with pickle slices and fries. With a coke it totaled $12 plus tip. Very good, flavorful and perfectly sauced, with a selection of other flavores to try at your table. The space is busy, servers are constantly moving and service seems like it might hit busy roadblocks at times. The decor is heavy metal themed, mixed with odds and ends like family photos and kitschy restaurant signs. If it were a bit bigger and a little less frantic, 5 stars all day long. read more

I don't know what happened to this place. First, they made some unwelcome changes to the menu (you can no longer get chopped brisket, either "fat side" or "meat side"). Then, we've been ordering food from them for a special fall occasion for about 4 years - generally 12-15 people and it's never been a problem. This year, they told us they needed 48 hours notice! We we asked if 12 people could be served inside the restaurant if we showed up, they said yes. Well, then why can't you just package food for 12 and let us carry out? Oh, it would have to be on "individual plates". Seriously, you can't make this crap up, it was like dealing with an IRS bureaucrat. We've noticed that the quality of service has steadily gone down hill, and now this latest affront. I guess they have bought into the whole "artisanal hipster" schtick where "we choose the customer" - meh, good luck with that. It will catch up with your business in the end.
