Met 2 old college roommates there this fall. One lives in Lansing and had heard good things about this place. He made a good choice. I read the reviews and many were giving thumbs up to the wings, so I thought I'd try some. They were much different than your typical bbq wings and I thought they were the best that I had ever tried. Hopefully this place will do a better job accommodating parties of 6 after their expansion. The BBQ is very good, however the lusty reviews, I believe, are frankly more indicative of the fact that Lansing is otherwise a desert, devoid of good authentic BBQ. From a service There is simply no good reason to have our party of six, told 45 minute wait up front, watch 6 groups of 4 who arrived after us, be marched in and the hostess telling us that there is limited seating for 6 people groups. "Can't move tables together due to fire code".......So after reaching the ends of our ropes on a 75 minute wait (it's BBQ!!) hostess is wiping a two top and a four top and I tell her "We'll take those two tables and split our group" to which she responds "I'll be right back" and comes back and proceeds to slide the two tables together!!! Yay! (sigh) Once seated, the waiter was a super efficient rock star, and basically saved this place from a more scathing review. read more

This is one of my new favorite lunch places in all of Lansing. When you enter, the decor can be a little scary, as the appearance of the is nice, with a heavy dose of Iron Maiden banners. But please, do not let that you, this place has it's own style and the food delivers! I tend to gravitate towards the Meatwich side of the menu, as it seems to provide the most value and the best layering of flavors possible. Meat offers 10 different Meatwiches, ranging from the classic chopped brisket to the Cartman. Where this menu really shines is from the Wolcott on down to the Cartman, honestly. With the Wolcott, you are provided your choice of meat (brisket, pulled pork, or double burger) topped with a sunnyside up egg, pepperjack cheese, cheddar cheese, and spicy mustard. Be side to grab from their 4-5 different homemade choices of BBQ sauces, ranging from a Georgia mustard, to the ever popular (and seasonal) cherry bomb. The sauces do a wonderful job of accentuating the flavors and tastes of any of the choices on the menu. For some extra fun (and if you're extra hungry) be sure to try the Cartman, which is a "double cheese burger, topped with extra 'Merican cheese, bacon and a sunny side egg, sandwiched between two sticky-sweet, caramelized honey buns." While this may sound unappetizing, the mix of flavors, combining sweet, with the other options, makes this one a winner! I recommend everyone try this one! Meat also provides some fun with different daily specials, ranging from today's Taco Tuesday, featuring fresh brisket, to other new Meatwiches not on the menu. As for the sides, I tend to prefer the Bleu Cheese Potato salad over the Mac and Cheese, but it's all personal preference. The Mac & cheese side is a little devoid of flavor to me--so I tend to mix in some BBQ sauce for a little extra spice. I'm more of a fan of the Meatwiches than just the meats alone, as I tend to like a little more smoke on my meat than they provide. However, as far as BBQ joints go, this one is tops in my book. I had been waiting to try this place after hearing so many good things about it, and was super excited to do so. While I am not mad that I took the time to eat there, I was thoroughly unimpressed. Pro: You do get a lot of food. I got the boss log, and it was massive. Easily got two meals out of it, which is always nice. But that was about it. Con: Picking apart the Log piece by piece and trying the meats individually to see what they tasted like I found pretty much all of them to be completely flavorless and dry. Backed up by trying my wife's standard plated version. The burger patty tasted pretty good, but Im not at a BBQ place for burgers. Con: Wait time. This isn't based on our specific wait time (30 minutes) but the others we saw. People who came in right after us were told it would be about 40 minutes and they were just getting seated when we left over and hour after we had sat down. And for no real apparent reason as tables sat open for extended periods of time. Con: Wait staff. Not the worst Ive ever seen, but not impressed. Took forever to get our check, took forever for them to notice my beer needed a refill. Pro/Con: Beer selection. Their beer selection is pretty good and they have a lot of choices. But all 4 things I at least took a drink of while there didn't quite taste right, almost watered down. Overall: Glad I tried it, but won't be disappointed if I dont make it back. read more

Hands-down the single greatest barbecue I've ever had in my life. Period. People kept raving about this place but it just didn't sound appealing. Then my GPS gave me wrong directions as I was trying to go to Olympic Broil Restaurant and I ended up at this place. Wow! Thank you, GPS. I ordered the sliced brisket which I highly, highly recommend. So tender that it falls apart as you pick it up. Today was my first visit, but it definitely won't be my last. Pros: The food is so good! Personally I have only had the brisket sandwich options while dining here so I cannot comment on the other selections. Their Disco Fries are delicious and heavy, so share or you might end up taking your meal home. The food is great and the beer selection is amazing especially if you like craft beers. Cons: The atmosphere is a little dim and the wait-staff can be hit or miss as far as wait time and actual service. I had high expectations but found our visit to be hit & miss. First off, our wait was a quick 30minutes. They told us an hour but we checked back after 20 and we were told to stay close and were seated 10 minutes later. Our meal... The brisket was outstanding. You'll be asked to choose lean or fatty. The fatty was moist and well seasoned. Really exceptional! The meat mountain was huge and exactly as described in the menu. Not my cup of tea but our friend ate every bite. Mac and cheese was rich and delicious with a spicy kick. It comes with your choice of two meats. We chose double brisket. Yummy! The full rack of ribs was just ok. Our preference is baby backs and these were spare ribs. We've had more tender juicy ribs at Famous Dave's. Smoked wings were great. Smoky, crispy and juicy. The sides: creamed corn was unique and delicious but cold. When it was reheated at home it was great! The baked beans were a winner. The jalapeño coleslaw seems to have no dressing but the next day it was better. The cornbread was fine. Not dry but nothing special. We had high expectations for Meat and while we enjoyed ourselves, it's not top on our list for bbq. If you have time make the 20 minute drive to The Block in Pinckney. When I took my first bite 5 F-16s soared over, fireworks exploded, the star spangled banner blared, my taste buds round house kicked terrorists. Really tasty beef brisket! Also had the Texas hot link, pretty tasty as well. Love the fact that you can choose your own sauces. My fav was the spicy garlic sauce- very good! My hubby got the Carolina mustard and he really liked it. The bacon and bleu cheese potato salad was great. The only complaints about this place was that when we got there at 4:30pm we were told they were out of pulled pork (which I had been looking forward to trying) but by the time we were eating another table was ordering the pulled pork. Yelpers- I have a confession. My husband cheats on me with this restaurant. Oh it started out so nice, friendly even. We came to Meat together as a family, wanting to try out the new hip place in Old Town. And it was lovely, even our children loved the decor and the sauces. Pulled pork- my favorite, plus custom sauces (Black Magic, with it's smoky sweetness- my favorite!) So, like any time when a new restaurant appears on the scene, we went back. Sometimes spontaneously, sometimes for special occasions, always arriving hopeful and never leaving disappointed (except I STILL haven't been able to try the smoked turkey- harumph). Meat.. was becoming more, a place where maybe we might be regulars. It was amazing. And then it started. "Hey, honey, where did you go for lunch today?" I'd ask, and get a mumbled answer, shifty eyes and a quick change of subject. This was odd to me, but whatever, we all get busy, maybe it wasn't that spectacular. What I didn't realize, oh it's tragic. And then he came home with bbq sauce on his collar. Was it Black Magic? Was it Cherry Bomb- his favorite? With a sinking suspicion, I confronted him and he confessed his sin to me. He'd been going to Meat without me... the tramp! I should have known, and should have seen the signs.. he'd been talking about how he'd changed his mind about not liking blue cheese because of Meat's amazing potato salad. ... And now.. since this sordid confession... one of these days, I'm going to look across a crowded room and meet his eyes, while both of us take a bite out of whatever fantastic daily special they're running. Well, I was finally able to try Meat a few days after my initial issue. The good news is they had some food still available. If my review were based just on food, I would give it 5 stars. The bad news is they were out of most things. No ribs, no hot links, no chicken wings. My choices were pork or brisket. Both had a good flavor and the brisket had a nice smoke ring. There are plenty of sauce options on the table for you to try. My personal favorite was the coffee based sauce and the spicy one, although it was a little too similar to a buffalo sauce. There was also a vinegar based sauce, a mustard based sauce, and a standard mopping sauce. They are basically trying to appeal to every style of bbq aficionado. Of Course as good as the items I had were there were still plenty of issues. Besides the meats I mentioned above that were sold out, they were also out of nearly every side. I was given a choice of mac & cheese or mac & cheese. Can you guess which one I picked? It was a mediocre mac & cheese, I have had far better at other bbq joints and southern food places around the country. I am not sure how a restaurant runs out or "sells out" as they like to say of things like french fries and cole slaw. Cole slaw is an item used as a side and a topping on some of the sandwiches, there should be plenty to go around. Of course, their most popular side, the creamed corn was gone. If it's your most popular side, plan ahead and MAKE MORE. I still have issues with them running out of meat all the time. Unless there is truly not a single square inch of free space in the smoker, throw a few extra racks of ribs and hot links in there, add another pork butt or brisket. If they were able to increase production slightly, they might be able to even do special like burnt ends. It seems as though they intentionally do not make enough food to add to the hype. Either that or it's an issue of poor planning. Another issue was the service. It actually took a while for our food to come out. Since BBQ is cooked ahead of time, the service should actually be very very fast. Not sure why that was, but the food should have made it to our table much faster than it actually did. I would like to say these issues are simply growing pains, but it appears they have been open for about 2 years. By now they should have gotten their act together. If they can figure out their supply and demand issues and fix the service issues, they would be one of the best places in Lansing. read more
