I could see how people unfamiliar with the true meaning of the moniker "dive bar" might mistake this place for one but in all actuality it is more a "hole in the wall" or "hole in the ground" if you will than a dive (although you could literally dive into it I suppose). An instant "tell" that you are entering a dive is that there are two to seven people in there that are all f#cked up no matter what time of day you walk in, be it 7:00am (another "tell" if they are open then), or 3:00pm, or 3:00am (yes, another tell). A good dive will never let you go drink-less for more than the time it takes to draw you another one or twist a cap and you can order another with a look or gesture. A good bartender will return that gesture in spades along with your brew of choice be it a "hop pop" or something with a stronger dumbing agent added. The wai-fee and I attended a yelp event and got to spend a little time with cool people once again but sorry to say the bar under-welmed me. If you have a patio and it's open, I think you might need to have someone servicing the area? Just a thought. Don't you think? This was my first time here 10/29/15. I am a regular of the spot across the street, Cold Crush, good energy, people who are original locals! My girlfriend and I were hanging out there again as our love for Cold Crush, the staff, atmosphere, customer service is phenomenal. I've lived here 2 years, and hate everything but Cold Crush!!! Tonight, a coworker of my gf had us head over to Meadowlark across the street, the bouncer, humorous but professional. We ordered some drinks then went and hung out. Eventually my girlfriend wanted to order another around and sent me to get them. I get to the waiting line for drinks, lots of people trying to cut in line (typical self entitlement here in Denver). There was a short girl who was definitely there before me. I stuck my arms out in typical manner to note I'm next up, but of course the short girl could barely be seen so I looked out for her first. I see a tall girl, w/ an Afro taller than me, and I'm 6'3". She was waiting behind us but saw an opening and cut right in front of us. After 20 minutes of not even a glance, I double check w/ the short girl and her man, almost thirty minutes for them waiting. Of coarse, the bartender jumped on the group of ladies to the left who weren't there for long. This was no mistake, the bartender knew for sure how long we'd been there, probably ignored us cause he thought he wouldn't get tipped. I see the line cutters get served and shouted at a separate bartender and said hey we've been waiting way longer than them, he ignored me. The main guy long dark hair, tall with a ponytail orange earplugs approaches us, but still won't make eye contact. I explained how he ignored us (not even together) for almost a half hour. His response, looked at me and said and I quote "I don't give a fuck, you want a fucking drink go somewhere else you piece of shit!" I responded "Fuck you and your shitty bar, I recommend we all go somewhere else, the rest of the line applauded and we left!!! If you manage this horrible establishment and read this, I recommend you switch your staff ASAP!!! (the attitude of your bartender(s) kills the vibe. Not only will I refuse to offer you any business, I work in the area, and would happily recommend not even considering this place as an option. That is that, but if you inform me the long haired ponytail guy has been fired, I may consider a silent attitude!!! read more

went to this place on a Tuesday eve, it was open mic night, and wanted to see this really talented piano playing kid, with autism, and donate to his college fund. everything started out great, the place is cool the vibe was good. He comes on stage, and I was sitting at the bar, attempting to order 2 beers, wich took over 2 songs, because the bartender was not present for some reason. I ordered my two drinks, then she proceeds to tell me that she needs to be tipped better and that it was bullshit we didn't tip her better on our first round. (which I dint even buy) And this is alarming, because I've never been told by a waitress that they need to be tipped better. Tipping and gratuity, are earned and not to be expected. She proceeds to lay into me about this, to which words are exchanged, and she takes my beers back, and decides to kick us out. During the musician that I was there to see. So our group of 4 had to leave because we didn't tip better. The bartender was a tattooed female, that was not that nice to begin with. So our night was ruined by a greedy non hard working female. I will NEVER SET FOOT IN THIS PLACE AGAIN. With so many new cool places around this area, there is no need to even go down those steps. read more

Worst service ever! I would give no star but that's not an option....Went there to celebrate a birthday and the blonde bartender was beyond rude. She was demanding tips and even went as far to charge 50% more on drinks because she didn't feel as if she was being tipped enough. It's called the service industry for a reason...tips are earned based on the service you provide! My group was kicked out when we questioned the high cost. As she kicked us out she claimed she was the "manager", I hope this establishment would hire and train people with a little more class and respect. Will never return! But as the "manager" stated when she used profanity to kick my group out "they don't need our business". Good luck getting returning customers. We went next door to larimer lounge and had a great time... Where we tipped the bartenders who actually deserved tips. read more

'Round the corner onto 27th, inch down the steep and, honestly, scary stairs, open the double doors and *gasp* one of the coziest places you can imagine. You, my friend have found the Meadowlark Bar. With big barstools, wood paneling, and animal heads on the wall the Meadowlark feels like it belongs only in Denver C-O. The patio recently opened, and just in time for some late night summer dancing. Went out with friends and where just walking Larimer after work. The guy at the door cuts me off after letting people and my friends in and says they're full. My other friend girls walk in and he doesn't stop them afterward. Others leave and I proceed to enter with id in hand and the door guys gets in my face smelling of alcohol and tells me I cant come in and gives me 0 reasons why. He's apparently drunk so I gathered my friends and left. It was straight discrimination against me because I was gay or a male. I've never been treated like that anywhere. They're many great bars down there to deal with people like that. read more

Delightful little bar that is thankfully far enough outside of Lodo. The first time I came here, it was to see a film screening and show. I marveled at the very cool decor and atmosphere. I like that it's underground, it feels like you're in a cool, secret bar that only a few people know about (I guess until now.) I wasn't aware that they had a patio until yesterday when I met my lovely fellow Yelpers for a few drinks. The patio is relaxing and secluded as well. And, I believe they are going to be having shows this summer out on the patio, how amazing is that? I get so excited to find cool patios in the summer because SUMMER = PATIO right? They also had a special drink for us Yelpers that was delicious, way too good, actually. And, I had 3 and my tab was $7, not sure how, but wow. That never happens to me ever! Great old hidden basement bar that compliments Larimer Lounge.....See a show then stop in there for a drink, most likely you will find a local DJ/singer-songwriter duo who are experimenting with their new sound. Love it! Jenn N. took me here the other night and It is fantastic. I love the decor its filled with modern art and very modern decor and then just for a colorado touch their are mounted heads everywhere "its a lovely room of death." Anyways the bartender there was so nice and chill and made us special drinks, which was awesome. The best part though is the spectacular patio they have out back which is adorned in red christmas lights. They have a really cute stage and also a bar out there aswell. Don't be fooled by the appearance of this place. It may look like someone's grungy backyard with a bunch of lawn chairs and tables set up everywhere, but it works. I dig the "hipster" feel of this place. The live DJ made the atmosphere even better. I had a great time having Sunday Funday here. Not to mention their freshly squeezed juices that can be mixed with any kind of liquor. I tried the mango and the watermelon with vodka and they were both very good. It was slightly dangerous not being able to taste the alcohol, but you know that the bartender put a lot in there. I like this hidden gem, definitely check it out. And it's an outdoor bar, so make sure its nice out when you go. read more

I've been a regular here for some time. It was a good bar with good music and bartenders. Maybe it was a little pricey with average pours, but it was cozy and the vibe was good; so that made it cool. Over the last year it's become infested with effeminate hipsters sipping their PBR and, with the help of the now awful bartenders, alienating the other clientele (the ones who run decent tabs instead of pbr after pbr). I just moved to Denver, and this is one of my favorite bars I've discovered so far. The clientele, in particular, is one of the most appealing I've found; yes, hipsterish, but none of the dreaded dudebro crowd (read: unlike the Matchbox down the street, no one could mistake this for a sports bar). The space itself is cramped and divey (I mean those as compliments) with some nice touches--a taxidermy stag, local art on the wall for sale. Their event programming is great--Britpop dance party, soul night, etc. I went on a recent '80s slow jam/yacht rock-themed night called "Cabana Nights." The irony was thick and the vibe was white-pants-with-gold-shades smooth. Drinks are relatively cheap, bar staff is competent and "Dazed and Confused" was being projected behind the DJs. I'll definitely putting this one into my rotation. read more

There are two things I don't like about the Meadowlark. The first is that they almost always have a live band playing. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but in a venue the size of my living room, it's a pain in the ass. Everyone is packed in tight, you can barely hear the music, and it feels unnecessary. Why not just have a bar where people can sit and converse? The music feels so shoehorned in. I have heard that they now do music on the much larger outside patio, and that sounds a lot more appealing. The second thing I can't stand is that a lot of the bartenders seem more concerned with being seen and posing cool than actually tending bar. I'm a pretty low maintenance customer, but I don't need snooty looks because I order wine. If you don't want to pour wine, take it off the menu, I'll get a beer. Again, I'm not the type that wants a fake smile and a bunch of small talk, but I don't need any sassy attitude when I'm forking over the price of a bottle for one drink. So what do I enjoy best about the Meadowlark? I like rolling in on my bike on summer nights (already pleasantly buzzed), and enjoying the spacious patio. I'd visit more often if there wasn't music every night. read more

I was there for a going away party last night. I'm 5 months pregnant and was only there to drive my husband and friends to home after a few drinks. A guy that worked there came up and started taking our chairs away and taking shit that I shouldn't be at a bar if I was pregnant. Mind you it's 9:30PM not 2AM . He continued to talk shit to me and husband. We have been going there for years but it's safe to say none of the 15 people we were there with will ever be back. This joint is a favorite among my friends & I. We love the Monday night Jazz jams that feature stellar local artists. The Lark is a smaller & more laid back spot but I really dig the atmosphere & the intimate feel while musicians play live gigs. I will say that this place gets some of the best talents Denver has to offer to play at their venue & that is mainly why our group keeps coming back for more. The bartenders are great at what they do & drinks are moderately priced. The outdoor courtyard is a quaint spot to hang out while there's warmer weather due to the fact that it's spacious, comfortable, & aesthetically pleasing. I am happy to recommend the Lark to anyone looking to have a good time & will continue to support their business. read more

I was in Denver visiting family last month and my brother took me to this bar for some food and whiskey. The bartenders and the rest of the staff were super friendly and warm. Food was delish. Man oh man do I hate to give Meadowlark two stars. I've been coming here for a couple years now, and I love the proximity to my house. It's got a great atmosphere and probably one of the best patios in Denver, hands down. Unfortunately, it is a bar that can't make up its mind whether it is going to be a bar or music venue. The happy hour is great but the bar is empty, and apparently anyone band can play there (or the standard is very low). Out with friends new to Denver last night, we of course stopped by Meadowlark. It was warm out, and we wanted to enjoy the patio--we were stopped at the door by a seven dollar cover! Really, Meadowlark? The music isn't that great, the bar isn't that big and all we want is your patio. It could be a great neighborhood bar, though for the moment is choosing to be a mediocre music venue. read more

This is a great basement bar with a fantastic patio......cheap drinks and stiff drinks. We went on NYE and it was fantastic, not over sold and a great looking crowd. I was worried the hipster factor that everyone reviews about would over power me but I didn't even notice it, whatever. The DJ kept the music flowing and it was fantastic. The bar has a nice atmosphere despite being a cramped basement. The patio on the back is a plus specially for smokers that can enjoy a drink or two while smoking in a nice atmosphere instead of standing outside. The bar does not sell draft beer, but they have a variety of bottle/can options and some good deals ($2-3 Coors Light). Tuesdays is open mic and the set up is well thought out...with limited time or about 3-4 songs per slot so if you don't like a particular style/performer, it will only last a short period or you can take a break in the quiet patio. The only exception is some regular players that are friends with the staff and therefore get to improvise on stage, play longer than others or jump in line so if you don't like their music you'll need a much longer break read more

I've heard a lot of great things about this place so I thought I'd finally try it. Everyone was right, this place is awesome! I sat at the bar with a friend and the service was very fast and everyone behind the bar was friendly and accommodating. I had a hard time deciding what to order because everything sounded so good. I finally chose the smoked brisket and DAMN!! That was delicious! My friend ordered the burger and although it was a little messy, she claims it was one of the best burgers she's had. The portions were just right and I still had room for desert. I was pleasantly blown away. I really like this place and I will definitely be back for more! read more

The Meadowlark is in a word cozy, which would be expected for a small basement bar. The woodwork is the a big reason this place gets the three stars, which is outstanding. The Meadowlark does NOT have beer on tap only bottles as well as a variety of liquors to choose from. The service started off great but then with change of staff it ended pretty rough and slow even though it had about the same amount of patrons around the bar. I went here for a friend's acoustic set so I can't say how the atmosphere is when live music isn't playing but it seems that it is pretty calm. read more

BUT this is on par with any restaurant I've visited in New York, London, San Francisco, Chicago, and several other food towns. The food is amazing! The chef is really talented and creative. The complexity of flavors and pairings are well worth the very affordable menu prices. Plus, it's not stuffy at all! The vibe is Denver laid back with the most chill beats and cool clientele. Bravo! The Meadowlark is a cool little spot to go if you want to have a laid-back night. I'm from Houston and the Meadowlark is the closest thing I found to some of the hip hop spots back home. And I'm talking real hip-hop, not this sh*t you hear on the radio. Denver's DJ LowKey was spinning, and also Dayta (our homie from Houston). Drinks prices were great. Bathrooms were clean. Best priced drinks on Larimer and they have so many good musicians that come through. The Lumineers honed their sound here long before they became an international sensation.
