This bar revitalizes my hope that Denver has more to offer than flat paneled meat heads on TV screens and high pitched drunk girls yelling through Lo Do. This inconspicuous subterranean locale is now my favorite spot in Denver. Whether crowded or slow, the ambiance of this place is suits the mood with good friends, music, art and drinks. I have experienced some fantastic nights here, especially noteworthy, surprisingly, are the Monday Open Mic Nights, which on occasion have been host to renowned jazz musicians. At the end of a great young jazz group's set, two older musicians took a seat and belted out some fantastic sets. This place has my vote, see you there. read more

This place is a fun little bar. It's down a creepy stair case, with a non-descript entry. The place is cozy and intimate. There are a number of places to sit. No food to be had, but you can bring your own. And walnut room will deliver. I have yet to enjoy the upstairs patio. And we don't spend too much time since there are no food options besides delivery. read more

It's a tiny, cramped hideout for hipster/indie types, so small that you are right in the face of the band you're watching. If you are claustrophobic or a worrier, this place is not the place for you, because rest assured- if there is a fire, you are effed. You are stampeded by Chucks and you are effed. Luckily for everyone, there's a commodious smoking area out back that makes up for the Anne Frank Cupboard experience downstairs. And honestly, the small space is very cool- lends itself to a kind of an exclusive feel. read more

Aretha Franklin was stapled on the rafters over my head! For that alone, there should be five stars. But know what you are getting into. You know the intellectual bad kids in high school who had band practice in the run down, dark basement of their mom's house? This is that place. With a full bar. There are pencil drawings by local artists on the walls, an interesting mix of people coming in and out... and um, pasta for patrons. (Don't try to make it make sense, I couldn't.) The bartender Ericka was pretty sweet, kept busy and made yummy drink concoctions for everyone here in a snap. There was a band playing. My check-in says it was a jazz band. Did I mention, The drinks were really good? And I remember Aretha overhead. I think that means it was good night. P.S. If you are not used to the altitude, you want to refrain from drinking for a couple days. Apparently, your tolerance plummets and you can handle half of what you can in Metropolitan Chicago. James F and I headed over to the Meadowlark over this past weekend to support his brother's band. Now, I had a vague recollection of the place, but never knew where it was. Well, it makes sense that I'd only heard of it because it's a basement bar, cleverly hidden save for the twinkling lights to light your way. Or rather, so that you don't fall down face first on to the rocks and break your teeth. Okay, that's a bit harsh, but man, those steps are steep! After braving the adventure downstairs, the Meadowlark is actually pretty cool. It has an intense rustic feel to it as if you'd stepped into a stand-alone bar somewhere in the woods. Or someone's old basement. Either or. But in any case, I liked the feel. The bartenders were lovely and kept the drinks pouring. And thankfully, there was enough Crown in my drink for me to actually taste it. Woo hoo! As a bar, I dig the Meadowlark. As a music venue? Not so much. It has stone walls which causes the voices to fade and the music to become a bit too jumbled. But I liked being up close and getting to see the bands play and rock their hearts out. In short, the Meadowlark is a cool place for a drink and to listen to some local bands, even if the acoustics aren't optimal. But we've all got to start somewhere, right? Patio is gross. Heavy smoke and very messy. Rarely gets cleaned up there but it's pretty cool looking so if you're a smoker, maybe it's a neat area to hang? Downstairs: not a whole lot of seating and there is weird empty space. Also the bartenders are hard to flag down. Venture beyond the rows of old warehouses surrounding Coors Field and a few blocks later you'll find some of the baddest bars in the city. There's not many places I can go to and see actual vinyl spun for a 21+ only crowd for little or no cover. Two stars for that alone. This is the kind of place I prefer to dance in, something that requires me to go sub-level, literal underground, nothing over the top with it's interior design, a bar, and an open floor. It's a monthly show, 2nd Fridays, Disco Nouveau with Tyler Snow. I'm SOLD. Pros- $2 PBRS on a Friday night and it's packed, $5 cover which is just amazing considering what most places charge, including the Larimer Lounge, which shares the block with it. Add 21+ AND DJs? You mean I can feel like a raver kid without actually being surrounded by them? Cons- Only one bar, a barback, and two bartenders means it's one of those bars that's kind of hard to do what you wanna do at them, you know, drink. Am I the only one who thinks it's not hip to wait 15 minutes to get noticed and served? Winter narrows down the available space, only smokers brave the patio; it makes maneuvering a pain in the ass, not a fan of that. Misc- I don't have much insight on the patio, there's possibly another bar back there which would be very nice. Loved the vibe in that area. read more

The Meadowlark is in a part of town I rarely venture to. Not that it's a bad thing, but I rarely find myself around this area. It's mostly industrial, and next door to Larimer Lounge. I was quite surprised at just how close it was off Park Ave though, just a couple streets east. My friend took me to a local house night here. Denver, to me, is not real known for it's hoppin underground Electronic music scene so when I heard this was going on I didn't give it a second thought. We walked down the steps and entered in a cozy bar with a small dance area. There is art hanging on the walls by local artists (for sale too). The back patio is huge and has a stage setup. I imagine this place is poppin off in the summer time. The drinks, oh the drinks! My vodka sodas all night were only $4. Cheap drinks, unpretentious crowd...I may have found a new hangout now. read more

OK, this place is definitely unique. Not a place I'd normally find myself on a Friday night but if you're into the hipster/neon sunglasses at night crowd, go for it. Walk down the steep stairwell into what appears to be a medieval dungeon - stone walls, rustic paintings, and bartenders in corsets (ok not really the corsets, although it'd certainly add to the effect). Overall the drinks were alright, fairly priced, service was a little lacking, but that's to be expected when you're packed to the brim and only have two on staff. I can handle the slow service, the hipster scene, the eccentric music; My only true gripe was that the whole place smelled overwhelmingly like nail polish remover. It had one of those chemical smells that you can't quite get out of your nose. It pervaded the entire bar. I suppose it could have been a hipster in the corner reneging on her earlier nail color choices, but it seemed more like it was emanating from the fog machines... scary thought. read more

As some other reviewers describe... I really love this place and I have been going here for a long time, yet they really need to decide what their core model is and stick with it. It has a great atmosphere with its underground hidden gem appeal and a huge back outdoor area. It is the only bar in the d that makes me feel like I am in a 500+ year old eastern European pub, including bad service. They really have it spot on until, god knows what horrible musician/dj is going on next to ruin the experience. I keep coming back in hopes that one of the many unfinished projects would be completed or that they would pickup the would be awesome backyard... OR fire everyone and get a staff that is actually in the SERVICE business. I really would love to see this could be cool secret spot not be an embarrassing choice of mine when I drag some of my friends thinking I am about to show them something cool they have never seen before. This place has the best jazz jam session in town on Monday nights, hands down. (I spent a year writing a journalistic piece about a famous jazz joint in Philly and hanging out with the musicians, and play the jazz flute, so I know.) The primary band is full of virtuosos, and the guys who join later on are top notch, too. (F-ing up a solo here would be like f-ing up at the Apollo.) I could say more: There's a lovely outdoor space in the back, the round bar is intimate and quiet early in the evening, the liquor selection is quite decent. But really, I just go for the jazz (every week, because its that good) and the amazing mystery cocktails that the bartender provides me upon request ("I can't decide, just make me something delicious involving bourbon or gin or that green bottle up there") all of which have been fantastic. I really like the Meadowlark. It has such a nice, cozy vibe to it. Plus, I respect a bar that usually hangs pretty good art on the walls, rather than filling the space with ugly, poorly executed, and high-priced pieces. It's a super fun place to see a show (both indoors and outside), and the guy who books the shows is so extra, extra nice. Oh, plus one time, I was there to see a show and they interspersed surprisingly super funny comedy routines with the bands. It was awesome. The only reason that I'm not giving it five stars is because, occasionally, it can be really difficult to order a drink because the bar is under-staffed, and usually the one lone bartender is rather disgruntled. The Meadowlark is an amazing Denver venue, but recently I learned what an incredible happy hour spot it is. It's still nice outside, so go sit on their gorgeous patio, enjoy a $1 beer, and relax after a long day. The happy hour crowd is entirely different than the crowd you'll see at a show, more diverse and professional. Being a hidden gem, it's not very crowded either. It's a great spot if you actually want to chat with your happy hour companions. But with that beautiful bartender, you may not want to acknowledge your friends. read more

This place rocks, literally. Can't believe I have never been here before. If you love local music and quaint venues, you have to come here. My buddy and I met up with some friends here on a Saturday, and although the $7 cover and no ATM persuaded me elsewhere like the Larimer Lounge, my buddy assured me that I would have an experience. He was so sure of this that he opted to pay my cover. My initial impression walking down the steps to the bar and basement below was more concern that I would eat sh** down the steep decline, and I was even sober at the time. The interior of the bar is awesome! So much character with the rustic bar that protrudes out towards the interior stage. I say interior stage, because there is a massive one out in their back patio as well. We grabbed a seat at the bar to get a drink and a glimpse at the current performer. There was a reason why he was the opener for the night. The next band confused the hell out of us and urged us away from the very friendly bartender. Kind of sad since she was really cute. The back patio is still a bit in construction on the back end, but it is huge. There are tons of tables, an outdoor bar, a much larger stage, and offers up a nice view of downtown Denver and the night sky. The stringed lights above the patio added a nice touch. Our friends met up with us at the patio, and although there was no band performing on that stage, we were entertained my fire dancers. Yeah, that's right fire spinners were lighting up the patio and although a bit amateur, amateur in the sense that one lit his pants on fire and the other his hoodie, they provided as much enjoyment as the crappy band inside was. I undoubtedly will return here soon, as this place has it covered. However, I'll be sure to do a little research on the bill for the evening before hand, but regardless of the performers, it is still worth a trip. read more

Total hipster bar. I got nothing against the hipsters. I only find it ironic that in their quest to be individualistic, they created a new stereotype. But at the same time, I enjoy the music they listen to, the films that they like to watch, and the books they like to read. And on top of that, I used to live in Williamsburg, which some may cite as the birthplace of the hipster. Regardless, the vibe in here is great. Cozy, not too loud, chill people hanging about. $2 bud lights, which is very nice. When i walked in, there was a hipster on a stool talking about the brilliance of Wu-Tang Clan's 36 Chambers, which annoyed me, not because I don't agree, but more because he was boring and annoying and he kept talking for like an hour. Then he left the stage, and people started playing music, which is when my opinion about the place really started to go vertical... Apparently, they often charge a small cover (in the $5 range) to support the artists. Regardless of that, this was a good find. I'm at a point where I need to find bars where I can actually have a conversation and not have to shout at people. read more

This is a funny review because I feel like it should be 3.5 stars but I rounded up. I have been here on Monday nights for jazz night, which is so much fun. There is great talent with a nice energy. I like the stone walls of the place on a winter night where you feel like you're somewhere other than Denver and where you feel like this is a perfect hang out on a cold night. But I have also been here on a weekend when this transforms into a dance floor with a DJ and it's super crowded and it's just okay. You may overlook this place because it's easy to miss, but it is worth looking out for.... The Meadowlark looks like a place that people go to do socially unacceptable things in darkly lit corners, but don't let the exterior fool you. You enter through a set of steep stairs going down to the basement which opens up to a large round bar surrounded by a live music area and a set of stairs in the back. The live music that I heard is incredibly intimate and I have heard from one or two of my musically inclined friends that they bring in some great local acts. I have also heard from a friend of a friend type way, that performers love playing here. Regardless, the sounds of the music coming up from beneath the street in a dark bar should be enough to draw in the intensely curious. The drinks are reasonably priced, but the cover charge is a bit steep on the weekends (this coming from someone who only goes to places where you don't have to pay to play). However, on a summer night, when the mood is right...the patio is the place to be. The twinkling lights, the music and the sunflowers blooming outside are reason enough to lay claim on your table and never wander away. Another bonus, they display and sell some incredible local art that would look great on any wall. All in all, this place is a local gem. read more

DISCLAIMER: I know the owner and think he is a good guy... Thaat being said, I have always liked this place. Great atmosphere and attention to detail. Yeah, they are a little pricey and yes, one or two of their bartenders can be rude (the brunette is plain crazy) but it is what it is. I am upset that they started charging a cover. I used to go there with friends to start the night out with a few drinks. Now I have to pay $5 to sit there for an hour? The bouncers give people a little leeway and won't charge you if you say you are only staying for a little bit...but still really? I love this bar. The Meadowlark is probably the closest thing Denver has to Elsie's, my favorite bar back home in Santa Barbara. The first time I went to the Meadowlark was about a year ago to see the band Bad Luck City. Then I attended the Analog Space Dance Parties once a month on Fridays. It worked well for both. The word that best describes the Meadowlark is intimate. The inside is small and comfy and the patio is like being at someone's backyard. Also, The Meadowlark is great for both dates and if you have a friend visiting from out of town. Definitely worth a visit. read more

I want to like this place. I really really do. Its next to the Larmier Lounge and is a good spot to take a break between bands, plus its close to my house and my husband's practice space. However, for some reason it just rubs me the wrong way. A glass of wine is on the light side (cant a homegirl get more than a three second pour?), and pricey. The drinks are ok, but again, its pricey. I think my main complaint is the choice of music they've been playing during the times I've visited. Its a little too loungy-clubby-cheese for me, and when combined with the sleepy-bye lighting, its just puts me to sleep. If thats the kind of thing you like, go for it. The bartenders are nice enough and its a good looking space, if just doesnt do it for me. read more

Did you ever see Inglorious Basterds? You know that basement bar that the shootout happens in? That's kind of the feeling I get in The Meadowlark; the walls are mostly refinished brick, the entire room is pretty cozy, and the surrounding area feels about as harrowing as Nazi-occupied France. The contrast of the bar to said surrounding area actually makes one feel a little more at peace, being safely underground with your friends. I went here to go see two of my friends' bands play. I've read here that there is almost always a live band playing, which some might consider a plus and others might not. I particularly liked the set up -- it's a small and well put together venue good for more jazzy or funky music, and the acoustics aren't half bad for a bricked off basement. Plus you can get right up front either standing or at your table. I suppose the minuses would be how hard it is to get to, and how little there is to do in the area once you leave, provided you're not interested in lying down and dying in a dusty and abandoned hardware store. But if you're looking for live music in a quirky little bar with cheap beer that's definitely off the beaten path, try The Meadowlark. read more

I do not recommend ever going here. Listen, I can admit when I'm wrong. I can even admit if I was out of control or being belligerent at a bar. My good friend and I were literally standing there 10 minutes before the bar closed when the doorman began to scream in our faces and pulled on her arms to remove us from the bar. My friend and I are at least 125 pounds each and there was absolutely no justified reason at all to be physically putting their hands on us. There was a bar cop standing right behind him, if things absolutely had to get physical, he should have been the one to do it. They could have just politely asked us to leave but instead chose to get physical. There was about 11 people still left in the bar whenever they decided to put their hands on us. The man that grabbed us was the doorman he had blonde hair and a black mustache. Beware of this man, he physically put his hands on ladies at the bar who are just simply they're trying to close their tabs and get an Uber, i'm not much of a drinker, so I had barely a beer, another reason why there was no need to get physical. I will absolutely never be there again, I will be calling the manager to let them know what happened even report this to the Better Business Bureau. Ladies beware, men put their hands on ladies that go here, the man even proceeded to say things like "I don't care I'll do what I want to you". Very scary and definitely something I do not ever want to experience again, I will not be spending any money here. read more

No need to go down to LoDo for a drink when you can just go downstairs. Yes, Meadowlark is quite possibly the perfect casual cocktail bar and lounge -- it's a bit of Casablanca off of Denver's Industrial Row. Soft lighting, stone walls and exposed rafters all reflect off a long polished wood bar that's ideal for midweek slouching or the practiced posing for those on the Friday night prowl. There is always a good DJ or something going on. These people are great. Very nice and fun. Last time I went there were 2 adorable girls bartending, and even though the bar was absolutely packed they were very good about making sure they got around to everyone.
