Ordered a few items on a lazy night where neither my boyfriend nor I wanted to cook dinner. He ordered two sets of chicken wings and I got some vegetable rolls and shrimp lo mein. Admittedly, I had a couple of glasses of wine before eating anything, so keep that in mind when reading this review. Regardless, I seriously enjoyed my meal from Me Con Bistro! Everything was flavorful, and the lo mein was deliciously greasy as it should be. The portion sizes are ample too! My boyfriend, who was not under the influence, seemed to enjoy his meal just as much. When I asked him how he would rate his experience, he said 6 or 7 out of 5! He did specify that the wings could be spicier, but they were juicy nonetheless. The only thing I wasn't thrilled with was the duck sauce for the egg rolls. It was a little too tangy for me. Very solid pan-Asian joint in the South Austin area. I'm always a little skeptical when places serve a mixture of multiple cuisines (i.e. Vietnamese and Chinese in one place) but Me Con Bistro executes it very well! I've had their Vietnamese pho and vermicelli (bun) along with some of their Chinese lunch dishes and egg noodle soups. All delicious and decently priced. What a wonderful stop this was! Almost hidden behind a Taco Bell in an angular strip mall lies this little gem. They seem to have a booming to go business, and I now know why. Because it is good food. I had the simplest of orders for my first test of this place. I had an orer of Knug Pao Chicken with some steamed rice. Simple enough for sure. What came out was beautifully trimmed vegetables and luscious pieces of chicken, a tasty sauce and I was Very Very Happy! One thing we enjoyed the most about this restaurant is the cleanliness. Of course, it is still new, but I'm really picky about Asian/Chinese food and loved this little place. Only negative is that on a separate visit after this review was originally written, they charged 2.00 extra for fried rice and didn't add it to the meal. Easily the best pho I have had in town. The broth was perfectly balanced and shimmering. The noodles had good texture. The garnishes were the normal fare; Thai basil, sprouts, and jalapeños. Chili sauce and sriracha were provided as well. What really sealed the deal was the offering of pho drippings as a side condiment. This is also known as fatty scallion head broth(nuoc beo). basically a bowl of rendered beef fat with scallions. Spoon a bit of this into the pho and the flavor is delicious. The service was friendly and efficient. I really enjoyed this family owned spot, chef En Hang is very talented. I look forward to trying the other dishes offered. Went again for lunch. Came to this little place after kayaking in Lady Bird Lake, and it definitely did not disappoint! The restaurant was clean. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and the friendly server answered any questions we had about the menu. We ordered beef pho, sesame chicken, spring rolls and vegetable egg rolls! The pho had a lot amount of meat and noodles for the price. The meal prices weren't bad at all now that I mention it! The only thing that was pricey was the egg and spring rolls. As was the egg roll. The hunan beef was good. It had a nice flavor and seemed to have quality ingredients. The real (and rightful) star of the meal. The rice was not exactly fried as anyone expects it. Mostly it was white rice that was colored. I couldn't identify any ingredients or cooking techniques to differentiate it from white rice. I have eaten here many times... A few of their items are good for being South Austin (terrible food in South Austin, minus a scant few). Stick to the grilled pork, it won't leave you depressed about food in general. But the level of "poached pork" and their "bbq pork" are just sad... so sad. Speaking of fresh...I don't think I've ever used that word to describe a deep fried egg roll but wow. Usually veggie egg rolls can get really mushy and questionable and these were perfect. The prices were decent for the quantity of food. I ordered the orange chicken which came with two scoops of white rice. The chicken was a little dry but the sauce was good. It had a stronger orange flavor than I'm used to but I liked it. The food was warm and the rice was sticky liked you'd expect. My wife ordered the beef and broccoli. Too bad, I really liked this place. Took my family to eat tonight and my son found 5 little black curly hairs in his fried rice before I asked them to remake it. Then I found a little black curly hair in my soup. I know eating hair won't make me sick but visions of a disgruntled kitchen worker sprinkling pubic hairs in our food swirled through my head. I was full enough to continue searching for buried treasure. I showed the waiter the hair and he quickly took it away and told me he would not charge for two of four meals, I never asked for this. He brought the bill which showed the total of $41.51 and -$17.90 discount at the bottom. I gave him my card and he still charged me $41.51; which I happily paid just to get out of there and try to pretend we had a nice time out with the family. I'm not a vegetarian, but their tofu pho is amazing. As a meat-eating tofu lover, it's hard to find a place that will make a normal pho with good tofu. I really wanted to like this place and expected I would considering the reviews and rating. However, much to my surprise, it wasn't all that great. We ordered the General Tso, Sesame Chicken, and the Saigon Eggrolls. I will say the egg rolls were the best part - very flavorful and the filling was different than the typical egg roll fillings. The fried rice was okay - also not your typical fried rice and was lacking more flavor. It was pretty comparable to just getting steamed rice. Now this is where I'm getting a bit picky, but I have this thing with dark meat so I much rather have white meat. Before ordering the sesame chicken, I asked if it was white or dark meat and they said white meat...it wasn't unfortunately. I'm aware that not all dishes come with white meat so I've learned to ask and have a backup food option in case they don't have white meat so I'm not wasting any time. I was very disappointed to take my first bite and find dark meat. However, the flavor of the sesame chicken and the general tso was great! So there's that! One last gripe - we asked for the general tso to be extra spicy and it wasn't at all. So have some extra spice lying around just in case you need more hot in your life. I'm going to definitely try this place again and order something else - I'm not giving up yet! read more
