We've had it on our list to get to McPartlan's for a few years now. But unfortunately we did not have a good experience for our first visit last weekend. It started off okay. We hit it at a good time to get a table right away. The bartender was very friendly and told us to sit where we'd like. We chose a bar table so we could watch March Madness. We came for my husband to try McPartlan's famous fish fry. Our waitress was a bit salty and not very helpful, so when my husband ordered the fish fry, she failed to mention it wasn't the beer-battered version. The menu is unclear. What came out was a small piece of breaded fish with two average sides, coleslaw and choice of potato (he went with baked). My husband said it was okay, nothing to write home about, probably worth a respectable three-stars. But the fact that he was violently ill a little while later brings us down to one star. Man, the disappointing fish really, really did him in. :-( I don't eat meat, and went with the egg salad sandwich. For seven bucks, I was expecting at least some lettuce and tomato on the sandwich, maybe a smear of mayo. But nope. Nada. It was two pieces of dry bread with fairly tasteless egg salad in the middle, served with a handful of broken potato chips. The star of all of our food was the side of sweet potato fries I ordered. Those were served in a cone with a side of honey for dipping, and were hot and tasty. But they can't totally make up for my husband's queasy sick stomach, and my lackluster sandwich. We won't be going back to McPartlan's any time soon. :-( read more

Years ago I had a friend in Cheektowaga who introduced me to McPartlan's to partake in the Friday night Fish Fry. The place was packed. The fish fry was great. Packed to "the gills" ... I pulled up to get my take out fish fry at 7:30pm and had to circle the place twice before parking across the street (Tip - just go for the across the street parking!). I have to say I was impressed when the woman answering the phone wanted to know my arrival time. She gave me several options for the side ... French fries, macaroni salad, German potato salad ... It was a fry night for me being the health conscious eater that I am. Entering this 1950's style restaurant reminded me of my parents who would eat here on occasion while they were still alive because nothing has changed. As noted in other reviews, there is not a feeling of sparkling clean when I looked around the totally packed dining area. Pick up was appropriately in the bar area where I had to swim upstream to reach an open space hoping the grumpy older bar tender or the constantly smiling younger one might note a hungry man with a "take out" look on his face ... That being me. I was pleased to see the times for pick up being clearly noted on each bag but when the almost $14 price was given to me I was in a bit of STICKER SHOCK since the very best FRIDAY EAT-IN FISH FRIES cost less. When I opened the package it was uh ... Never get take out fries! These I think had been freshly cut but with the wait they just were well ... cold fries. The haddock was nicely breaded and flaky with a fresh haddock taste and the slaw was decent. Go figure how two slices of commercial rye bread and one tab of butter were tossed into the mix. So ... If you like the feel of a packed 1950's style legion hall with a decent Friday fish fry this would work ... If you want to pay a dollar or two more than other take out options & you really enjoy commercial rye bread well I would say this works & you should get there at your time not 7 minutes late like I did if you want your food hot. My friends who live in nearby Cheektowaga wanted to meet here for dinner, mainly so they could have a Tom & Jerry for desert (more on this later). It's a decent sized place - there is definitely enough seating and you can probably bring a large group here for a nice meal. They have a drink menu but I just decided to have water. Our waitress was very kind and quickly introduced herself after we arrived. She was checking in with us every so often so we were well taken care of. The dinner menu has a nice selection to pick from, mainly classic finger foods, but there are other options if you're interested. The part I wanted to tell you about was the reuben I ordered - it did not disappoint! I was starving and needed a nice dinner to fill me up. The sandwich came out at the perfect temperature and I enjoyed the mix of dressing and cheese :D. Is it the healthiest sandwich? NO. Is it yummy and filling? YUP. Oh yeah, the fries were good too! So apparently they make a good Tom and Jerry - it is a tad pricey but it's one of their delicacies here. We came in on a Friday night for the fish fry. We all enjoyed the fish fry and the sides. I would recommend it if you come. The cheese sticks were over priced for the typical Sysco style. I would skip them and try something else. Two people at the table had the seafood bisque which is only served one day per month. They loved this soup. Overall it was a good dinner. Short & Sweet: TOP NOTCH Reuben warm and meat piled high.. *fantastic*, small-but-strong properly-priced Tom & Jerry (small size means less batter.. I like batter), decent fries and my friend swears they have the best Fish Fry! And excellent attentive and fun waitress. So why 3 stars instead of 5. (a) Slight awkward scent when we first walked in kinda' turned me off (b) I wish the T&J was larger so it'd have more batter.. that said, they made up for it with booze :-) (c) my friend recently went and was treated pretty poorly.. he had such a horrible experience it's tainted my feelings towards the place. My go to place in the neighborhood for a fish fry recently closed. So I need to find a new place. I read that the McPartlan's Corner serves fish fry every day. Went there on a Wednesday for lunch to try their fish fry. It was breaded and the fish was fresh. Besides cole slaw I choose German potato salad as the side. Other sides choices were French fries, potato salad, German potato salad and macaroni salad. The German potato salad was good To me the sides are as important as the fish. The service and ambiance were like the familiar neighborhood bar. This could be my new go to place. read more

Mcpartlans is a cute little Irish pub. Dining it or taking it home, it doesn't matter. The food is fantastic. Their French onion soup is perfect and I have never once had a bad meal there. The staff is also incredibly friendly and when I have time to pick up my to go orders, I've watched the bartender treat his customers like family. The level of service is unheard of! A true local watering hole straight out of t.v. The vibe is definitely more of a family restaurant or hole in the wall low key pub, not quite the young Allentown drinking vibe. I highly recommend the corned beef reuben, fish fry and French onion soup! read more

This place never fails! If you're an out of towner make sure you stop in, especially on Friday for a fish fry. The pies are a MUST! The pie selection changes daily and are made from scratch in house. Take my word, even if you're full take a slice to go. The daily soup is normally always a good choice, tonight they offered red pepper Gouda and OH MY GOSH it was out of this world! My group came in on a Friday for a fish fry. We waited 70 minutes to finally be seated. I originally wasn't going to fault them for it because it was a Friday during lent after all but after the experience it made me wonder if their lack of service is why we waited so long. In the waiting area the halls are adorned with newspaper clippings touting McPartlan's as the best fish fry in Western New York. A 70m wait gives you the time to look more closely and notice that they are all from the 80s and 90s and today's McPartlan's is a far cry from the best fish fry. When we were finally seated, it took another 18m just to get our drinks and finally get our order taken. I ordered a fish fry with a salad and at this point it's well past 8pm so when the server asked if I wanted the salad now or with the meal I politely asked for it sooner. It took 20m for the salad to come out. The fish fry itself was good, while the salad was about as unremarkable as you could get. I also enjoyed their rye bread which they apparently get from a source in Rochester. But then of course there was more waiting. Another 25m just to get our bill. We got to McParlan's at 6:30 and we didn't leave until after 9:15pm. It was a painstaking experience from start to finish with a slight intermission in the middle where we got to eat. If I were to just rate the food I would say 3.5 out of 5, but when you factor in the terrible wait times (just the stuff they had control over like "can I take your order" and "here's your bill"), I would give this place a hard pass and find a location with better service. read more

Always consistent and tasty. Stopped for dinner last night as they have been advertising Tom & Jerry's for Christmas time. It was hot and warming on a chilly day. It was early for dinner so there were only a few other tables. Norma, our waitress was friendly and well informed about the specials. My liver and onions was juicy and not overdone. It's a thin cut so the cook obviously kept an eye on it and that's appreciated. The pork chop special with sauerkraut was also enjoyed. Instant potatoes, but I knew that going in. I'm ok with them sometimes if you don't try to pass them off as real. Everything has its place. Carrots were a little soft for my liking but they do have a large older crowd so understandable. Now the best thing here is the homemade pies! I can overlook instant potatoes if you have a good pie. The pineapple cream is delicious! They also have chocolate, blueberry crumb and a rotating selection. Save room for pie! You won't be disappointed. The moderate pricing and friendly waitresses makes this a regular stop. read more

How anyone can give this place under 5 stars is beyond me. From the daily soups, prime rib, pies, fish fry and even Ruben everything is made to perfection. Service is loving and hasty regardless if you sit in the bar or dining area. Its family owned and has been around for decades. Do not let the decor fool you, its all part of that home town feel. My girlfriend and I came in once in awhile and used to be regulars prior to moving garter away but its always our go to place for even a casual date night. I ended up ordering takeout last week for a fish fry. I called in early around 6:25 and they told me my order would be ready by 7pm.... I show up at 7pm and the food wasn't ready yet( which is fine) . Now it's 7:15... not ready yet... and now it's 7:30pm... still nothing... the guests at the bar were complaining about not getting their food in a timely manner , and they ended up getting their fish for free. Meanwhile myself and 10 Others are still waiting for our fish that we all ordered a little past 6pm. It is now 8:00 and I said FORGET it. I ended up leaving and completely wasting my entire Friday night. If you can't handle your takeout orders as well as your seated customers, don't do takeout. I was extremely pissed off and will never come here again. Mind you , they don't follow and Covid rules and regulations. 1st time I have been to here in 10 years. For lunch older clients. Simple menu. Decided on Beef On Weck. As an old customer of Bailo's restaurant at the corner of Bailey & Lovejoy I compare every Beef on Weck to the best. This sandwich was tasteful but small for the price. Served with a slice of beet & wedge of pickle. I do not use horseradish. Fries offered were not fresh cut so I declined to add. Went here for dinner tonight and was seriously disappointed!! First the ice tea machine wasn't working, had to order a different drink. Waitress didn't give us a menu till after she wandered around trying to get us drinks! Place our order and waited...and waited; there were only 4 people in the restaurant!!! For $12 i got a Philly Steak and Cheese...it was those frozen steaks you can get at Save A Lot in the box, with cheese and onions...then I had to pay an additional $2.75 to get fries, and those came in one of those bowls that hold like 3 coffee creamers!!! WTF!!! My husband ordered a Reuben Sandwich with fries; of coarse the fries don't come with the sandwich. He pulled his sandwich apart looking for the Russian dressing that typically comes with it; he found a faint smear of it on the bottom slice of bread. And one other problem, it was a good thing we sat near the waitress desk, cause we were at least able to reach over and grab ourselves napkins! This place is terrible! The food is definitely NOT worth the price, the service sucks, and it's probably only staying open to accommodate the regular alcoholics that sit at the bar all night!! McPartlan's represents everything I love and miss about Buffalo restaurants. Stepping through the door is like a time portal to the 1970s. Not because its tacky, but because its just old. But I don't mean that in a negative way. McPartlan's retains the feel of the old-school corner neighborhood restaurant and watering hole. The kind that are being shut down across the country to make room for more useless Applebee's, but still thrive in Buffalo. Their wings are hands-down some of the best in Buffalo. They are huge and the blue cheese is made in-house and awesome. When people ask me where to go for wings when they're in Buffalo, I point them to Duff's if they want the busy tourist feel, and McPartlan's if they want the authentic experience. Ask for them well done of course. They also make one of the better beef on weck's in the city. I can't be of too much more use describing the food because those are the two things I order every time. You can't go wrong with them, plus when I visit home there's no way I'm eating anything other than "Buffalo food." I don't do fish, but judging by my family's reviews and the line out the door most Fridays, the fish fry is pretty good too. The food seems to be a tad more expensive than you would think from the look of the place, but I guess you're paying for quality. The running joke in the family, and I'm sure many other families, is that in order to get a table you have to show your AARP card. This is not exactly a hangout for the young crowd. Its unlikely I would bring a date there (well, maybe if she was really cool). But if I'm back in town and want a superlative chicken wing that's close by the house, I'll gladly sit in a room where the next youngest person is about double my age. read more

We live about two blocks down from McPartlan's corner in Cheektowaga. We've ordered fish fries from them twice on Fridays when we didn't feel like cooking. The first time we ordered from them (around September 2012ish), we received takeout platters that were literally bursting at the seams with fried goodness. We received a huge, hulking piece of breaded haddock with a smaller piece on the side. The fries were plentiful, as were the scoops of pasta and macaroni salad. Top that off with rye bread (yuck, seeds) and sliced beets (wtf?) and lemon. That time, it was excellent... I was sure we found our "go to" place for Friday fish fries. WRONG! We ordered from them again about a week ago for a Friday FF. The difference in the quality/quantity was like night and day. For starters, our takeout boxes each contained a single, pitiful piece of haddock. Each piece had something of a jagged "cut" at the end, which makes me think they took a full piece of fried fish and sliced it in half. What the hell is that?!? If you don't have enough fish to facilitate your FF orders, then order more for next time. The fish itself was cold, the breading soggy, and the texture gummy. Furthermore, we received NO macaroni salad, and a tiny handful of fries that were half cooked. It was a takeout dining experience so unpleasant that we've sworn off ordering from them again. McPartlan's has stood the test of time. This is certainly an old-school restaurant/neighborhood pub. I do note that the customers are an older crowd. The best thing about McPartlan's is that it is very consistent, and everything is of good quality. That said, the portions are smaller than average, but probably the right size for the mostly older customers. You probably won't be taking anything home with you. I ordered a reuben sandwich, French fries were an extra upcharge. The fries were actually good but I wish they had given out more fries considering that they incurred an additional cost. The serving size was very modest. The reuben was very good tasting, however with good quality corned beef. The only time I had any kind of disagreement about the food was when I ordered a club sandwich and the bread was not toasted. Not a huge deal, but almost always a club sandwich has toasted bread, which prevents it from getting soggy, soft and messy. The service is also consistently very good. The value for your money is barely average and would be better if serving sizes were slightly larger, which is why I rated 3 stars instead of 4. read more

Due to Buffalo's rich and diverse immigrant foundation, there are literally dozens of places within 30 miles that have killer fish fries during the Lenten season. While some are better than others, you can usually find a restaurant or even church that has one of the best around. McPartlan's is one of those places. Having recently moved to the Cheektowaga area, I had never heard of McPartlan's. A coworker recommended the restaurant after I had mentioned I wanted to try as many different fish fries as possible. He spoke very highly of it and mentioned that he went every Friday during Lent. Based on this, I decided to head over one Friday and check it out. Walking into the place is like walking into a restaurant from the 1970s. I agree with the other reviewer who said that it was not a negative aspect. The atmosphere is one of warmth and comfort. (Having mirrored walls earns points in my book.) Since it was busy at the time (as most fish fry places are during Lent), my girlfriend and I decided to head to the bar for a drink. The bartender greeted me with a "What's your pleasure this evening?". I remember this clearly because how often do you get just a nod or a "What can I get you?" Just like the decor, it was a throwback to a different time. We were seated within 15 minutes and I proceeded to order the standard fish fry. Now most people will tell you that a particular restaurant's fish fry is bigger than the plate it is served on. Around Buffalo this is usually true and McPartlan's is no exception. The fish was large, cooked perfectly and seasoned just right. The sides were standard fare and just as good. While my goal of trying all the different fish fries offered in the Buffalo area is far from complete, I can say with conviction that McPartlan's is one of the best I have had so far. read more

Came here with my parent's before I could drive and it was a wonderful place for a fish fry. Decided to check it out again, this evening, and was not disappointed. Caution: Many Seniors have been coming here for a long time. Be very careful getting into and out of the parking lot. As I slowly turned in, the car in front of me tried to reverse and almost forced me back onto Wherle. Patience pays off so does a soft beep of the horn. I walked in and there was available seating at the bar and Nick McPartlan, himself, took my order to the kitchen. We discussed books and the restaurant family history. I do not believe I was there very long but the fish fry I ordered was up in less than 10 minutes and I was on my way to relax at home. At home I discovered a beautiful fish fry, with two sides of potatoes and a large slice of rye bread with real butter pats, waiting within. "Where did you get that?", my son asked, as he and his lady were leaving in search of dinner. I know they will try the place, soon, themselves. We were seated right away when we walked in. I headed to the ladies room before I sat down. The smell was beyond awful. The bathroom was just not the cleanest and the smell made me nauseous. I tried to not let that ruin my meal but couldn't get the smell out of my nose. Anyway, our waitress was wonderful. She was quick and on the ball. I ordered the fish fry with fries - something simple and they are known for the fish fry. The fish was good and the fries were basically frozen fries that were cooked. Why do places do that? It's so easy to make fresh fries. Nothing more I hate about going out to eat than getting frozen food. The others in the group ordered the prime rib special and loved it. The cheese was one large piece which was hard to eat and there was no crispy cheese over the side. The fish fry was okay. Large piece of fish with batter. It wasn't the typical beer battered grease but a true breaded fish. The mash potatoes were okay. My waitress was busy but made sure everyone know if. I had no problem with waiting when it's busy but you don't need to be rude or talk loudly. My mom brought me to MacPartlan's on my most recent visit home for the holidays. A number of our usual fish fry joints have closed over the years, but theres still nothing like a fish fry from Buffalo. This place is definitely PACKED on Fridays. I suggest going in early, but regardless you'll definitely have a wait! The sevice is definitely a tad on the slow side but you go to catch up with family and friends more than anything else. Do go hungry, as the portions are huge. Worth every bite! read more
