I've been enjoying McMillan's for well over 20 years, so this review is long overdue. Their classic, chocolate frosted donut is an unrivaled masterpiece: it perfectly straddles the line between dense and fluffy, and the donut itself (not counting the delicious chocolate fudge frosting) isn't actually that sweet, unlike many modern competitors. Their Boston creme with chocolate frosting is also one of the best I've ever had of that variety. Apple cider and pumpkin are two of their absolute best seasonal flavors. McMillan's does NOT do weird gimmicky donuts with fruity pebbles or bacon or lord-knows-what-else on top. They just make damn good old-school donuts and pastries. There's a reason that Michael Solomonov and Steve Cook specifically called out McMillan's donuts as some of the best in the country. While donuts are the cornerstone of this family-run bakery, McMillan's offers so much more than that. One of their lesser-known gems is the tea biscuit with raisins - just crumbly, buttery perfection. Their cakes are never disappointing, and they do an excellent job with decorating them (if that's something you want - if so, just call ahead). They make pretty good seasonal pies, as well. The fruit-filled danishes are great, and they do a nice job with their muffins and sticky buns. We've also gotten dinner rolls before, and they were solid (although with Del Buono's and Deluxe nearby, the roll competition is stiff!). I LOVE bakeries and I visit them wherever I travel. When it comes to donuts, very few (perhaps none) have stood up to McMillan's in terms of overall quality and value. I will be utterly devastated if this place ever closes. read more

What an absolute delight to find this bakery! I was looking forward sticky buns like I had as a child and this bakery did not disappoint! We went early in a Saturday and were able to walk right in. It's has the old time bakery vibe. We picked up sticky buns and an assorted dozen donuts. The clerk even cut the buns so I could have a mix in each bag! Everything was delicious and we will most definitely visit again when in town. read more

Tried the sour cream doughnut and chocolate "tire" cruller. WOW! A real tasty treat. Unlike the punched out chemical doughnuts of the major companies, the flavor was present and without the after taste many mass produced doughnuts have. Looking forward to trying other varieties. read more

You only need to know one thing: the creme donuts are TO DIE FOR!! Seriously, I'd consider McMillan's one of the last old fashioned bakeries. Here you can get a variety of donuts and pastries, birthday cakes, pies, old fashioned sticky buns and butter cake, and fresh bread. Not to mention holiday specialities. Great bakery with very reasonable prices in a time where other bakeries are overcharging. My father drives 30 minutes out of his way to get a McMillans white cream filled donut. In fairness I have never gotten anything there other then donuts, but all the offerings look great. read more

I never thought I'd write another review of McMillan's, but there are only two items that keep me coming back to this iconic business, and yesterday's experience is making me rethink my choice. I go to the bakery for cakes and donuts. I picked up both yesterday for two very special events. In the past, their donuts were some of the best I've ever had. People come from miles away to get a couple of their powdered vanilla creams, standing in line, sometimes out the door, to get them. Yesterday's donuts tasted like day-old goods and the cream, which used to be light and fluffy, tasted cheap and thick. The cakes were another favorite. No other bakery could compete with their icing or the richness of the base. But last night's cake was just wrong on both counts. I ordered a half vanilla/half chocolate with vanilla frosting and the words Happy 34th Anniversary. The vanilla cake was not good: it was dense and dry, unlike the chocolate side, which was moist and springy. The icing, like the donut's cream, tasted cheap. Not horrible, just not comparable to previous purchases. But worse, by far, was the mangling of the writing. I've attached a photo. That does not say anniversary. Two people at the event said they could "sort of see it as it was in cursive," but everyone else made fun of it, mispronouncing it in several different ways. In fact, the first 15 minutes, that was all people talked about. It was good natured kidding, but I felt like a fool. Imagine ordering a $65.00 (yes, $65!) cake for your own event and people made fun of it. I had to cut it before the rest of the crowd got there to hide my embarrassment. Not only was it misspelled, but if you look at the "34th," you can clearly see that they got something wrong, erased it, and tried again, but it was sloppy. I mentioned it to the young guy behind the counter, but he stood there looking at it for a full two minutes, either not knowing how it should have been spelled or unable to read cursive, and said "well I guess I can ask." I didn't have time. That was my mistake. I should have had them fix it, but based on the attempted fix on the "34th," I didn't have any faith in their ability. I wasn't rude or aggressive with him; I simply said "you know, that's not how you spell anniversary," and then said don't worry about it when he told me he'd check with the baker. So, what to do? Well, if DiBartolo's hadn't closed, I'd go there from now on. They were a good bakery. Their cupcakes were far superior to McMillian's, though the cakes were not. But they're gone now. I'm not a petty man, things go wrong and stuff happens, but the decline in quality, both in ingredients and attention to detail, along with my experience with friends and family last night, has me feeling like I need to move on. read more

Was in the neighborhood recently and saw this blast from the past. It had literally been DECADES since i visited this place. I was with my mom, and she saw it and said, "let's go." Mom got two loaves of bread, a key lime tart, and a cheese pie (half of which we dropped off at her sister's house). She also bought a couple of donuts for me to take home to my husband, a self-proclaimed donut connoisseur. The powdered donut filled with cream was messy and delicious. Husband approved too. He also loved his pumpkin donut. Not sure--he may like these better than L&M! Mom liked her breads. The cream bread was similar to the trendy "Japanese milk bread" that is a little too white bread and sweet for me. But she had it with her dinner and enjoyed it. It's baked in molds that make for perfect round little slices, which I imagine would make adorable sandwiches for kiddos (and adults who like cute food). read more

Over the years, we have stopped here specifically for the cream donuts. They are side-sliced and filled with a generous amount of cream. Still a high quality product that is worth going out of the way for. Parking can be challenging. There is a small lot but you have to back out onto the street. read more

I've lived in South Jersey for 2.5 yrs now and have been meaning to check out this local bakery FOREVER! I don't know what I've been waiting for! It's definitely a must! Parking The lot right in front of the bakery sucks because it truly is just 1 way access, which you must back up then to get out. Basically impossible for trucks and SUVs.. so I suggest street parking! I hate to suggest the CVS across the street buttttttr.. you do what you gotta do for awesome baked goods! Bakery Lots and lots of options! I came mainly for the cream donuts I've heard about. But they've got cakes, pound cake, cookies, pies, bread... tons to choose from! They do take credit cards but minimum purchase is $10! The cream donuts lived up to the hype! Stuffed with tons of cream.. not overly sweet and thick like icing. More whipped with just a good amount of sweet! Donut part was really good too, maybe a tad bit dry but the cream helps! Service I'm not sure about some of the bad reviews with the service being poor.. but I didn't have any problems on a Saturday! The ladies were excellent and were very patient with people taking their time with choosing what they wanted. So hard to narrow down your choices :-) I will definitely be back when I need some carbs hehe. read more

McMillan's Bakery is family run and has been open since 1939. The have a nice selection of baked goodies for every taste. Some of my favorites here are the Tea Biscuits, their pepperoni bread or pepperoni & sausage bread and their scrumptious donuts. Everything is baked onsite and is always fresh. Their hours are great open 7A to 7P Tuesdays through Sunday (closed on Mondays). Their parking lot is small and can be challenging for larger vehicles especially during their busier times on weekends. Suggest using street parking or other nearby business lots. read more

My family has been enjoying McMillens now for 5 generations. Even though we mostly live far away now, we go out of our way to stop whenever within striking distance of Haddonfield. While I'm sorry that some people have had less-than-stellar service, the employees have always been super nice to me, even when I'm waffling back and forth on whether to get that extra cinnamon bun...and two vanilla creme donuts please...oh, one red velvet cupcake as well...OK, that's it. I get my birthday cake from here every year (chocolate cake with orange cream icing, the icing being the best part) and think they have the best vanilla creme donuts I've ever had. I make it a point to come here whenever I'm in town visiting family. I'm hungry just thinking about it. Beware that the parking lot is a nightmare. You're not supposed to park at the Wawa next door, but I have found myself occasionally doing so anyway and grabbing a hoagie or a drink to ensure I don't feel guilty when the lot is busy. I came to try the creme filled but only left with a dozen for family and I never got to try them. The lady was so sweet and she recommended I try a cinnamon sugar jelly filled. I excitedly did and it was so so good. WOW! I then asked what was that to the left & she said apple cider donuts (glazed, sugared or plain). She then offered me another one of those. Two samples of an entire donut on the same trip. Incredible. That glazed apple cider donut was so magnificent that I purchased more donuts...now for other family. I'm so full now that I'm no longer upset about not trying a creme filled. There's always tomorrow. I still have a few more vacation days in the area. Enjoy! read more

A little run down place, but was definitely clean and had friendly service as soon as you walked in. My sister told me I had to try their powdered cream filled doughnut, this is why we went. We ordered one of those and four of their apple cinnamon doughnuts with sugar. Delicious! I always dislike going to get doughnuts toward the end of the day because they usually have been sitting out for awhile. Not these! Fresh, fresh, fresh! Soft doughnuts with a ton of flavor. Tasted like they just came out of the oven! The parking was a downfall, it's like a large alley way, otherwise it was a cool place. The smell of baked goods is to die for! My wife bought a carrot cake for her brother's birthday. Instead of the usual ingredients you'd make a carrot cake from, it turned out to be made with chocolate pieces (my brother in law is allergic to chocolate). My wife went back to the bakery to let them know, and the manager called her a liar, said she 'made it up', and was extremely rude and hostile toward her. -My wife didn't even want the money back, but wanted them to know that a (big) mistake was made & that mistake could have made her brother very sick. The manager continued to be very aggressive and said the bakery has been there "for 70 years and they don't make mistakes"; ...well, looks like they did. I too, have had pretty negative experiences with McMillan's in the past and just chalked it up to someone who was having a bad day, but clearly this is just a bad business that doesn't care about feedback and doesn't want to keep a regular customer base. We will never purchase anything from them again, & will forward a record of their attitude and behavior towards customers to our social media accounts. I recently got my birthday cake here. We ordered a half sheet cake with one day's notice, and it was done the next day. They also were able to customize it to how I wanted it. As always, the cake was amazing. The cake was nice and fluffy, and the icing was to die for. I would recommend this to anyone that is looking for an exceptional bakery.
