I won't mention the salesman's name here, since I am not entirely sure that this is all his fault. However, I think this is a systemic issue, as you will see.
My wife and I went to McGrath Honda about a week and a half ago, to look at buying a CR-V. It is the closest dealer, and McGrath has locations all over the place. In fact, she bought her last car from McGrath Nissan in Elgin. She has been happy with them since the purchase.
The initial test drive/check it all out deal was fine. We were honestly in the exploration stage, and made that clear. The talk after the test drive seemed kind of curt, but I attribute that to the fact we stated we were not buying anything that day. We did get the inevitable "what will it take to get you to drive away today" question.
Go forward a couple of days. We arrived at McGrath, approved financing and the down payment in hand, ready to go. We asked for the salesman that we spoke to earlier, and started to talk. The price of the vehicle jumped $599 for the 'Pro Accessory Pack' - or something like that. It might have been $699, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. When I asked what that was, I was told it was the mud flaps and wheel locks. I suspect that it included the 'McGrath Advantage' - free car washes (for life), 2 free oil changes, dent repair, etc for the first year. It was never made clear that if it was part of that extra cost.
We asked for a lower price on the car and were not happy with the 'Pro Pack'. We asked that it include remote start, since the price ($600) seemed like a lot for splash guards ($110) and wheel locks ($55). That was all that we were told it covered. They matched our vehicle price request, but lowered the 'Pro Pack' by $125 or $175 and added $5-600 for the remote start. That is not really a deal, as it increased the price. That started my annoyance here.
Ultimately, after several rounds of back-and-forth (with the salesman attending to other customers in the middle of it), we asked for no additional costs, other than the vehicle itself. The last price sheet didn't mention all of the 'perks' of the 'McGrath Advantage'. That is when I suspected that those 'free' services are rolled into that extra cost.
We agreed on the price, and moved forward. I was then asked for my SSN, and the salesman filled out a computer form. I inquired as to why, since we brought financing. He fumbled for words and said something to the effect that it was required to be certain that i could legally buy the vehicle. He admitted that he normally doesn't take part in this process. I was getting frustrated at this point. The garbage with the 'Pro Pack' was not pleasant, and this made things worse.
I finally relented with the SSN (my wife liked the vehicle), and we moved on. I was assured that they were not running my credit when I asked about that. I was still fed a line about legal somethingoranother. Anyway, the next screen started to ask about my employment history and I again balked. This was a credit app. I refused to give any more information. The salesman retreated to the back room to get someone else to talk to me. I will admit that I was visibly upset at this point. Every time that he walked away, we contemplated walking out by now.
The finance manager for the evening came to us at this point. He stated that the questions on the form were to run my credit and that he apologizes for any misunderstanding. I am not sure how you get a misunderstanding when I state that I want no credit check, and they try it anyway. We asked for some time to talk and then walked out. He followed us out and tried to coax us back. I've forgotten what was said, since I really had no interest to return.
To their credit, the salesman called that night to apologize. The finance guy called the next day to state that he would 'make it right'. At that point, the bridge was burned. McGrath will never see a single dollar from my family. We bought exactly what we were looking for at Motor Werks. None of the McGrath BS occurred there. The process was smooth and friendly. No stress, no garbage, no $600 extras at the first offer. Just an overall great experience. read more
