My wife and I recently moved into the Gresham area and I've past by this place several times (usually see a good amount of people eating there) and wanted to try it out. From the looks of it, the place looks clean and the decor made the place a little more cozier than some of the cafes and diners I've been to....but then, again, I'm not the one to really comment on how a place looks unless I'm running to the restroom 15 minutes after eating their food. First thing, I'm really a fan of their service. We waited almost zero minutes for water and service which is becoming more and more hard to come by these days, no matter where you go. Throughout the whole stay, rounds of water and whatever else that may be needed came like clockwork.....big plus for me. Great job! Price wise....you will spend more than what you normally would pay for food, depending on what you get. Half order of chicken fried steak breakfast (Jerry's special) $14.95. 1/2 lb Jalapeno Pepper Jack Burger with a side salad $13.20.Total price tag of $28.15 without tip for two people in which is what we ordered. So, it's a little on the spendy side, in my opinion. For the food itself, the portions are freaking huge! The server tried to sell me on getting the whole pound burger but just stayed on the half pound. I'm glad I stuck to my guns, the 1/2 pound was almost too much for me and I can certainly put away some food. There was a couple things that I found concerning. Condiments/sauces. I thought it was odd that the ketchup, mustard, etc. came out like water? Even the thousand island that they used on my burger looked watery in which they completely over-killed. Made things really messy to eat. No thickness/substance at all to the sauces. Loved the fact that they serve steak fries, looked awesome! They were cooked well and were hot but when I tried them, they were surprisingly....um,dry!? I actually choked on them a couple times even after I drenched them in the watery ketchup. As for my wife's food, she enjoyed it. I did try the chicken fried steak and it was good. We will come here again and try something else. Let me suggest just getting half orders , the meals are huge here! Nice little cafe with good food! I got the country sausage and it was great, had good flavor and seasoning inside the sausage, nice helping of hash browns and eggs! I got side of their gravy, it is very tasty! My husband got the chicken fried steak and it was good! He got the half size and I'm telling you, it could feed two people easily. I could not imagine was a full size order looks like. They also have a 12 egg omelette and 1lb burger! The kids pancake was the size of the plate, and my niece got a half order omelette and it was huge! You will not go home hungry that is for sure! It took a while to get service when we first sat down and wasn't very busy, but like any restaurant you will have off days... This is one of my favorite regular stops. 12 egg omelettes?!? The portions are huge!!! The prices are not. Friendly service, I never have to ask for anything, someone is always coming by with coffee, water, or are willing to get another beverage to the table. I've moved to NE but do my best to visit. If you crave a homestyle cooked meal, then this is your place to go. My partner and I started with the chili cheese fries as our appetizer, it as very cheesy but the chili was a little too salty for my liking and I asked for some sour cream to dip in. I had the the haystack with hash browns for my entree. The best thing about it was the delicious home made biscuit! My partner got the half order of the Jerry's special and it was still enormous(she could only finish about half). I usually eat everything at restaurants but the portions were so big that we took about half of it home. Overall the atmosphere was warm and welcoming and the food was fulfilling and savory. I came in for breakfast after an event with my family, and I had heard good things about it. I ordered the Belgian waffle. Waffles are the greatest food in my opinion, so I was expecting good things. As the waffle came out I noticed that it was overcooked and smaller than expected. The bacon looked like the pig had been thrown into the fires of mount doom, and the eggs tasted like a hobbit's foot. If you come to McCrae's, I suggest ordering from the lunch menu, or order the French toast, which was less terrible. read more

Beats the heck out of other local breakfast places. They French toast is to die for and their bacon is THICK. Their chicken fried steak is divine. I've never had a bad meal here. Quality is not what you pay for here. You pay for quantity: gut-busting, "Good-Old-Boy-American" super-quantity made with cheap, low quality ingredients. If eating a 12 egg omelete at a divvy greasy-spoon diner is your idea of "going out for breakfast" then boy oh boy, different strokes for different folks, I guess. If you like quantity over quality, then hey, McCrae's Country Café is probably the greatest restaurant you can find because the quantity you get is ridiculous. I mean who in their right mind would want to eat a 12 egg omelet? You would have to not care about your health whatsoever. Even the "half order" (6 egg omelet) is just too much food (and cholesterol) for a single human being. It's 'Merica at its finest. No wonder this country is so overweight and wasteful. A textbook glimpse into American conspicuous consumption. I came here because it was 6:00 in the morning, I work nearby, I dropped my wife off at the airport and wanted to get some breakfast to kill some time before going to work. I spent $16 on a bland, low quality sausage and cheese omelete (half-order, six-egg), a small orange juice that tasted horrible- definitely came out of one of those sticky juice dispensers you see in cafeterias, and a tip for the waitress. The omelet was basically a pound of cheap, ground sausage with a Kraft single melted on top and then wrapped in a thin egg blanket. But I hate wasting food, so I ate the whole thing, along with most of the greasy-wet slab of hashbrowns next to it. I ate it... ...And then regretted it immediately. My regret wasn't just gastronomical but financial as well. If I'm going to eat a lousy, low quality breakfast I'll just go hit the dollar menu at McDonalds or Jack-n-the-Box. I was mad at myself for not just stopping at McDonalds for a couple breakfast burritos. I would've done the same damage to my self-esteem and body but for $2 instead of $16. There are two reasons I didn't give McCrae's one star. 1. The waitress was very, very, very nice. I would hate to see, however, how much food she has to scrape off plates on any given day. 2. I get it. I really do. I grew up in a small country town in rural Illinois and the restaurants I went to during my youth were exactly like McCrae's. HUGE, farm-boy portions of cheap, low quality food that tastes bland and usually benefits from the addition of salt and pepper and/or ketchup to make it taste a little better. I know that this sort of food appeals to some (if not lots) of people. So just because I do not seek out restaurants like this, I know there are people out there who hate me for writing this review because they love McCrae's and think it wonderful. Being a true Southerner I was a little skeptical of a country breakfast place in the Northwest but these people sure are getting it right! This place might just have one of the better biscuits and gravy I've ever had in fact. The service is so spot on that you almost have to tell them to stop coming to ask if you need more coffee- which I appreciate on a huge level actually. As mentioned the food is great. I had the biscuits and gravy along with hashbrowns, which by the way are MASSIVE. I also shared a pancake that easily disappeared. This place is worth driving across town for. Amazing American breakfast food with truly American portions. This is the kind of place you take a German exchange student to show them why Americans are fatter than Europeans. Then tell them they won't be far behind because the food is so damn good there is no going back to plain old small portion snitzel after. Their last two stars are for one spectacular item on their menu. The chicken fried steak. Made by them every morning. Get there early because if you show up near the end of breakfast they are likely to say "sorry sold out on that one." I would call their full order of Chicken Fried Steak the "Three Man Job" because one or two are going to have a tough time finishing it. I'm a HUGE eater and I'm not kidding. Three man job! Amazing!!! I wish I had more time to comment but one of the best down home breakfast joints you will ever find. Pancakes are amazing too. As this can easily be done poorly. Just to comment on other posts in the thread on McCrae's. There omelets kick ass but its a shame if that's what you order given their meat product awesomeness. If an omelet is done poorly I blame the people who ordered it. Its standard American fare so if you want something that tastes different than eggs and cheese you better order accordingly. Quantity over Quality seldom ever dominates a foodies mind. I came into McCrae's this morning after our church service to have breakfast and kill some time before our baby shower this particular afternoon. This place has crossed my mind many of times cause I drive by it quite frequently but I also have seen a few of my facebook friends post about this place so I wanted to give it a try. My fiance has been here before and boasts about how large the portions are. She was hesitant about going here as we would have a lot of food at the baby shower so she decided on something light there. We came in and the wait was not long at all considering how packed the place was. We sat down and got our menus and as I was perusing through the fare some pretty typical of most greasy spoon restaurants. I ordered the chicken fajita omelet and my fiance orders the french toast with strawberry topping. The wait wasn't long and our server constantly came back and checked on us regularly. Our food arrives and I was ready to dig in. On my first initial bite I found the chicken to be precut portioned and artificially grilled chicken breast. The veggies were fresh and overall idea was good but the execution of it was horrible. The biscuit was horrible. It was more like a dinner roll as opposed to being an actual biscuit. There was nothing very exciting about the meal itself. Even the hash browns came out of a bag. My fiances french toast was pretty basic and just topped with strawberry filling once again something that came out of a jar. Overall, I was not impressed. Like everyone else says, If you want gigantic portions and care less about the quality this is your place. Hate to say it but I don't believe I'll be back again. This place is solid gold, I always get the fajita omelette, it's huge, enough for two meals, with loaded hash browns smothered in gravy... so good!Great atmosphere, waitress are very attentive and cute as well. The ribeye is always cooked perfectly, biscuits are fresh and flaky, I think they bake them every morning, the gravy is just right, not too salty or thin, just perfect, which isn't easy to find... Well the food is about average. Be prepared for LARGE portions. Plates cost more than the usual but its also because the meal is big enough to feed 3 people. I'd say it's a bit pricy. Large quantities of food but the quality is not worthy of the money spent. There were TONS of ants crawling around the table, especially near the condiment rack. Theres no doubt that you get quantity over quality at this place, however this is the reason we end up here after a long night of drinking. They have huge portions for a fair price however I can't imagine stopping in here on just a regular day of the week. If I had to pick a favorite here I would definitely pick the omelette, they are so good and so big! There is no possible way for you to leave here hungry, the plate Is completely covered and I typically need tums afterwards. The service is pretty good most times, I have only been there once that I can remember where I had a server who was completely inattentive and was more interested in socializing with her coworkers than attending tables. But for the most part I would say they have a great helpful staff! I went to McCrae's for breakfast after reading a few of these reviews and was sadly disappointed. I ordered the country fried steak, eggs and hashbrowns with a coffee ($21 plus tip) The coffee was a weak version of the Folgers I brew at home for which I was charged $3.50. The smell of burnt toast wafted through the dining room as I waited for my order which didn't take long as I was one of 3 patrons in the place. The hashbrowns and eggs were good, but the chicken fried steak was the worst I've ever had. The coating was some sort of unseasoned, under cooked flour mixture. (FYI to the chef - the outer coating of a swiss steak is supposed to be crispy) The steak was cooked enough, but had a strange taste to it, like it had been sitting in the fridge way too long. The gravy was bland. It also came with one bisquit that was not freshly made that morning. (I know my biscuits) I could not finish either the steak nor the biscuit and it was a half order.
