Our meal was a 4 star, the service was a 2 star. We were greeted very abruptly and the owner/waitress was very cold and matter of fact. There was a misunderstanding about food we wanted to take home with us. The young man/bus boy dropped extra water off to us as if we were bothering the establishment and didn't seem to pay attention to us for anything else. The Beef Wellington is absolutely soft, tender, and delicious here! The dark brown sauce with the mushrooms is just fantastic. However, I personally could have used more sauce, it's just so good and completely completes the meal. The bread layer of the Wellington was great; this could of been a bit softer, but overall it was great. The pork tenderloin was good, but didn't have much flavor and was a bit dry. The greens that accompanied it needed to cook longer, too hard. The bread appetizer was fresh and delicious as well. Overall service was great. Our waiter was friendly, though I think he could have used some help because he was the waiter within the restaurant. The ambiance is quite peaceful. This is not a place for loud talkers, or children. The restaurant is small, and has a 1920s-30s feel to it. A very nice grand piano compliments the scene as well. Updating as a lot has changed here in the last few years. They're in a new larger spot now which is a nice place, and more comfortable size. Prices have increased like everywhere else but we felt the increase more steeply here and it was more noticeable due to what we ordered. In the past, we got fish entrees that came with sides or pasta that was full of multiple ingredients so it felt like a complete meal. This time we got beef Wellington and lobster bouillabaisse- I didn't realize that for the price neither came with a side. Strangely, there are no sides listed on the menu at all so it seems those entrees are intended to be eaten alone. I'd suggest ordering one of the appetizer salads as a side or to start. The special drinks and desserts are not on printed menus and we didn't see prices listed anywhere- for reference, cocktail specials were $14-$16 and our cake dessert was $16. read more

I would give Bacari 3.5 stars. 3 stars for the pace of service/set-up, and 5 for the food. I had no idea this place existed, and that it was located behind the shopping center I find myself wandering to on weekends. It's a "petit restaurant," with 5 tables and a bistro table hidden in one of their vehicles in case someone else is interested in their fare and is okay being seated outside. We sat outside. Based on the reviews, we were excited! How wonderful to have this awesome place near home. We're in dire need of more upscale restaurants, and I had hoped the intimate setting would provide an opportunity for excellent service and fabulous attention to detail when our plates came. Quite a few things did not meet the mark. They will be moving to a larger location this Fall, and so I think it's an opportunity for them to see where changes could be made. We'd be happy to be regular date night/special occasion customers. First, we were seated outside, and there were only 2 other tables with customers. One 4-top inside, and a couple outside. They already had a bottle of wine, appetizers, and a salad to share. It seemed like the perfect time to be served. It took 35 minutes after ordering drinks to receive them. Mine was a delicious blueberry mojito, and my husband had Maker's Mark - not much work to be had mixing there. I also took issue with the lack of a menu to order from. It takes away from their ability to give better service, and no one likes to ask, "How much is that?" Honestly, it leads to a conversation when I should be able to peruse a menu on my own. Rattling off daily specials is fine, and I realize they like to mix it up, but it fell flat. Additionally, we ordered a warm brie and pear salad, and it never came. Instead, I finished my drink, and we had nothing to nosh on. Being offered even a piece of bread would have helped to recover the situation. An older couple that seemed to know the seasoned waitress received their drinks and an appetizer before we did, and had arrived after us. The disjointed service became frustrating at this point. Even if she wasn't our waitress, it would've been nice to have her check in on us since we were at the next table over, and there was a total of 4 tables with persons seated. I ordered the "lox" pasta, which was poorly or incorrectly described. There was no salmon in my pasta whatsoever. It was mussels and shrimp. It was delicious, but wasn't what I ordered. She brought out my dish by itself, and asked if I still wanted the salad. I said no, because salad isn't something you box up and eat later. She returned to the kitchen, and appeared with my husband's plate - the bone-in pork chop. To his surprise, it was one of the best he has ever had, and he made sure to tell the chef as much. The roasted potatoes were good, as well. Almost like my mother's au gratin potatoes, but lacking cheese and cream. A small group had sat down in the midst of our meal, and decided to leave. I have to assume it was because of the slow service. It did allow us the opportunity to see what others had ordered. The beef wellington looks like it would meet Gordon Ramsay's approval. If and when we have an additional 30 minutes, I'd consider ordering it. With the knowledge that they'll be moving to a location near 4th and Hood this Fall, and room to serve ~70 people, I was understanding once we learned it was our waitress's first day. We then ordered dessert, which also did not disappoint. If they're planning to increase the number of tables and their restaurant space, they'll need to have additional trained staff for that. My hope is that they'll ease into it. Regardless, please make some changes, because we'd love to frequent your establishment and bring our out-of-town guests. The food was phenomenal, but the service experience was dreadfully slow, and this was a much-needed break for parents of a feisty toddler. We hope that the service during our next visit matches the quality of the food. read more

Oh boy! It takes something worthwhile of my time to write a review. It's either amazingly good or my cry to save you from wasting your money. In this case, please save your money! First, we called to see if reservations were needed. We were told it was a slower evening (Saturday around 7pm) and it shouldn't be a problem. We arrived to only 2 tables each with 2 customers seated at them. We ordered our drinks which were decent. Nothing that stood out but, drinkable. Since we planned on seeing a movie after we ate, we wanted to stick to drinks and some lighter food. The seasonal salad was described as a cold water melon with feta crumbles, fresh mint leaves and a citrus vinaigrette. This salad was incredibly sour! It was like eating a super sour candy without ever getting to the sweet candy center. Moving on to the Caesar salad. The anchovies were so overpowering it ruined the salad completely. Last but not least was the baguette that is served with sweet cream butter for $8. For an additional $5 you can get truffle butter. Something so simple was absolutely horrible! Apparently because we ordered the truffle butter we wouldn't be receiving the sweet cream butter. The reason explained to us when asked if the other butter was forgotten, was explained that the chef only gives one butter because over half the butter ends up not being eaten. Well, if I wasn't paying the extra $5, I'd understand that explanation. It gets better! The truffle butter wasn't even truffle butter. It was butter with an obscene amount of truffle salt. It was salty to the point that it was painful to eat. I tried to scrape the salt off of the butter but it was so over saturated in that salt that there was no saving it. Maybe why so much of the butter goes uneaten...? To top it off, the two salads (no protein on the salads), a small baguette, only one of the butter we ordered and two drinks were just under $100 before the tip! This restaurant is very over rated. I had high hopes that were easily destroyed. If you're looking for fine dining that's worth it, stay clear of Bacari. After our movie, by the way was great, we were so hungry we stopped at taco bell. I eat at Taco Bell 2-3 times a year and it by far surpassed Barcai above and beyond. read more

Wow wow wow amazingly good meal. I was in Portland/Gresham for work and was reading the Yelp reviews and this definitely caught my eye. It was a little later in the evening and went without a reservation but luckily had a table outside. Decided not to order an appetizer or salad but did order a loaf of bread. It was taking a little while until it came out and I realized that they baked it fresh-and oh my if the rest of the meal was this good I was in for a treat. I love it when they bring butter and lightly salt it. Ordered the special lobster bouillabaisse for the entree. Normally I'm more of a beef person but am I glad I ordered this! The Maine lobster was very meaty and also included scallops, prawns, halibut and a number of clams as well (I think) in a very nice lobster stock. Had a very nice and refreshing peach sorbet for dessert. The servers were super attentive and extremely pleasant and very informative about the food and wine. Was also nice that the owner and chef came out to check on the tables. Next time I'm back in Portland I will definitely be back! read more

I started with a salad which was one of the special salads of the day. It consisted of greens, bacon, apples, nuts and blue cheese. The salad was dressed perfectly and the clean taste of the ingrediants was perfectly balanced and not overpowered by the dressing. I ordered the salmon with miso aioli and micro herbs on thinly sliced potatos in puff pastry. It was DELICIOUS! I rarely give 5 stars but my family basically ordered me to write the review while still sitting there. My husband ordered the Beef Wellington which was perfectly cooked and the mushroom gravy was to die for. My son ordered the double cut pork chop which was juicy and tender. We had crispy tender green beans and asparagas. We also started with warm crusty bread. We had a large group of ten and we enjoyed the meal tremendously. Service was great and we felt like we had our own personal chef and server. All of our dinners were served within a few minutes of each other. We actually applauded the chef and server. What a gem for Gresham! I have lived here for almost 4 years and finally got a chance to dine here! Service was excellent. The young man working the front of the house was attentive, knowledgeable and made good suggestions, he also poured some great cocktails. The menu is small but the quality of the items are top notch. Had the Beef Wellington which was a first for me. Perfectly cooked meat, flakey pastry and seasoned well. The Demi glaze was so good, I'd like to bathe in that. Good portions for the $$. 1) need more than 1.5 (waiter and bartender) people working on a Friday night. If I'm spending $180 for 2 people, I deserve better service than I got, simple as that. 2) the food was great, the pork chop was excellent. Appetizers are way overpriced. 3) bartender gal got irritated with me cause every wine I inquired about (at least 6 of them), they were out of. She would never give me a definitive answer, almost like she wasn't sure, but then said they were basically out of the first 15 or so on the list. That is excessive, don't use the latest supply chain excuse and just update your wine list! ...looking at a lot of these reviews and seems to be some common themes you would think would have been addressed by now...what small restaurant owner doesn't read yelp reviews...or does and doesn't care to make any necessary changes! read more

Unlike one of the other recent reviews, i had the bacon wrapped filet with mushrooms and thought it competes with some of the beat I have had. It was tasty and tender. We actually tried almost everything on the menu. No disappointment here. Shaved Oregon truffles, prawns, salmon appetizer, warm melted Brie, ahi, chicken and pork entree. All of the dessert ordered! The waitress was very nice! We arrived at 6:30 ordered our meal and we didn't eat till 7:30 which seemed incredibly slow since there were only three other tables besides us. The bread and truffle butter for $10 was kind of like a rip off there was five small specs of truffle in the butter. My wife ordered the crab and salmon dinner and the salmon was very fishy. Have to be completely honest, this place was not as great as I had hoped for and expected. First off they only have a few seating times for reservations. which to me made it worse as everyone arrived at the same time and the server was very slow due to having to attend to everyone at the same time. I think they would be better off having staggered seating times or another server. The place itself was very cute, it had a cozy and classy feel at the same time. Our server was friendly and she told us all the specials she had which was A LOT to take in, I really think they should have them printed out as it was hard to remember everything she said. The menu is rotating so I understand but printing new ones everyday shouldn't be to big of a hassle especially considering the prices. Although I understand this is an upscale place I did feel like some of the prices were a little out of hand. Mainly for the appetizers. We ordered the prawns pernod, it came with five prawns for the steep price of $28. They were good but nothing amazing. For entrée ordered the Lobster Boullabaisse. The presentation was nice and there was a good amount of seafood, this dish was priced much more accordingly. My husband ordered the special which was a 12oz fillet. His dish also looked very nice but it did not come with any side item, no veggies or potato or anything. He was a little disappointed to see that. My mom and her husband got the salad special, and the Pork chop. They seemed very happy with their meals and had no complaints. The service during the whole time was very slow and we had empty drinks many times. This was due to short staff and everyone coming at once in my opinion. The bacon wrapped Filet had a salty reduction sauce with mushrooms, nearly raw green beans that weren't trimmed and nice mashed potatoes. I've had better bacon wrapped filet from Fred Meyer, and way cheaper. The shrimp fettuccine with truffle butter was delightful and tasty. I doubt we've had better. The melted cheeses and olive oil drizzled bread was a great appetizer. Indeed it's a tiny place with 3 tables for 2 and 1 table for 4, it's worth a shot for the Yelp explorers. read more
