Ooof. The one star is for the atmosphere, which is cozy and cute--that's a good thing, because you're going to be waiting a while. The coffee station is self-serve, which also helps you bide your time. They weren't serving lunch on a Saturday because they were "slammed." (They're open 7 days, though Yelp says otherwise). Place was less than 1/3 full, and the kitchen looked slow and disorganized. Waited 45 minutes for an average biscuits & gravy and a vegetarian version of the Toucan (only OK, nothing spectacular). Saw two other tables give up in frustration. Servers were friendly but inefficient. Bottom line: until you hear they have new management, stay away. Very tasty and reasonably priced. I think I've had every breakfast item on the menu and have yet to be disappointed. The sandwiches I've had for lunch were quite good (roast beef, falafel, and one other which escapes me) and the grilled chicken salad is also a winner. I'd like slightly larger portions, but I'm a pretty big eater, so those of you that have even a mild level of control over your appetite should be fine. Have know idea why, the place was empty until 10 mins after we ordered. Limited menu and the food was just average. They serve breakfast all day now! Also, the menu got updated recently (November 2010). Everything we've ordered here has been great. The service (order at counter, food brought to your table) is friendly and good (always gets your order right, even special requests). The Toucan is great for breakfast, as is the steel-cut oats dish. They know how to make GOOD oatmeal, not too chewy, not too creamy, yummy enough to eat plain, without all the sugar. I just ate here while in Billings for a wedding. I ordered the C.A.T. Sandwich (chicken, avocado, and tomato). I really enjoyed my sandwich with homemade kettle potato chips! Went in hoping to get some pancakes..., but my hopes were dashed! They did have a breakfast menu..., but I decided to order some lunch. I chose the Ultimate Grilled Cheese and I'll tell you this grill cheese did not disappoint. It had grilled red onion, I think there were 3 different cheeses and bacon. I came in to get breakfast today an almost none of the tables had been bussed. The cook handled the food without gloves on and no hair net. We also witnessed one of the ladies go from register, without washing her hands or putting on gloves, to handling a man's fruit before serving it him. When my silverware was set down it was completely dirty as if it had already been used, and after cutting into my burrito I found a hair. I would not recommend coming here the food isn't great an the service is bad. The service was horrible. They missed a side of bacon when we were ordering, even though the person repeated it and I said okay. They would not bring the bacon, even though it was their error. They were not very friendly or apologetic when they explained that the kids "were too loud" for them to hear. What??? So, why did you repeat the request? Just admit your error and make it right. I ordered the omelet with bacon and ham. The ham was quite charred; the bacon was burnt. The omelet itself was not hot. One of my party ordered the steak (medium well) and eggs. The steak was barely medium; it was so tough that it was barely edible. The eggs were not hot. Bad customer service. Rude to customers. Mediocre food. I will never return to this place! My friend and I walked in and the cashier did not greet us. She just gave us that look of "ok, you can order." As our first time visiting, she didn't offer me the coffee I paid for. So you put yourself out there as the "local" good food, "best breakfast in town" venue..... Well you had one thing to do.....meet that expectation for your customers. You failed, miserably. 9am on a Thursday morning, place pretty empty (was that a clue?) stood at the counter for 5 mins waiting for someone to take my order. Cook in the back looks up several times and does nothing. Finally walks back and brings out this crabby old broad. I ask for the steel cut oatmeal crabby broad turns to the cook, "did you get the oatmeal made?" Cook: "no I forgot" Ok guys this is a staple of a lot of folks breakfast.....Crabby broad: "we're out of oatmeal", what else do you want?" I ordered 2 eggs with sausage, OJ and coffee, coffee cold OJ warm.....says it all really. Guys, you put yourself out there as "THE" breakfast place in Billings, you are crashing and burning fast! We stopped here while traveling back to the airport after searching yelp for bfast places. It is a good find, tucked on the main floor of an old hotel. Stopped here to fuel up before a long drive back to Denver. The breakfast burrito was really tasty and loaded with veggies. The great coffee was much appreciated after a late night partying with roller derby girls. And even though you order at the counter, the service was excellent. After one member of the group ordered later than the rest, the girl at the counter hurried to get her order out and even brought some free pastries to the table to make the wait a little sweeter. I just rolled in here from out of town and discovered a great local cafe. My omelette was cooked to perfection served with toast, and I helped myself to the JOE which is very good especially considering it is a help yourself.
