Maynard is a quaint little town that kind of feels like it got stuck in time; back in the Fifties, or something. Last Christmas, we were shopping; and I met a man from Norway, who had just relocated to the States. He told me he kept expecting to see Jimmy Stewart walking out of a store. He was totally charmed, and wanted to move here, because where he lived was all strip malls. When we moved here, we had no idea how many great little shops were in the downtown, and the Outdoor Store is the anchor. It's been there forever. Sports, Camping, and Casual clothing are their bread and butter. If you can't find something, ask. Heck, I actually found a really nice dress that I wore to a wedding. I had been EVERYWHERE looking, too. Prices are reasonable. Most clothes are discounted from sugg. retail. I prefer to stay away from big chain stores, especially since I don't want stores like this to disappear. For now, this place is thriving. read more

I agree with the positive reviews - too bad the employees are so rude. All three times I've shopped there, it was like pulling teeth to get this guy to answer a simple question. I love going to the Outdoor Store. They have a great selection of casual and athletic clothing, as well as footwear and sporting goods. Their prices are just as good as the big box stores, and you get to support a small, independently run business. I like the Outdoor Store for a variety of reasons....locally owned, very good selection, fair prices. Parking can sometimes be a pain in the ass but there's a municipal lot close by. They really do have a lot of cool stuff in addition to outdoor type clothing; knives, flashlights, etc. I have also had luck finding a bunch of tall sizes which I definitely appreciate. I have always found the employees friendly and helpful. Always. A minor gripe which I dinged them a star for is that it's a bit hard to find what you're looking for. The coats for example are all jammed together on these circular racks with seemingly no order at all. Looking for a sweatshirt? Well, they could be in at least 5 separate locations. Don't let the name fool you they have all sorts of things (shirts, pants, shoes/sneakers) not just "outdoor items". They good selections of different makers and styles. Nice friendly staff always asks if you need any help and really pretty good prices go ahead compare them to the bigger stores or the malls you'll be pleasantly surprised. I have to admit that when I heard "Outdoor Store" I kind of stuck my nose up a little and made a face. It's not really what I imagined. And the prices are much better than I thought that they would be. Sometimes mom-and-pop stores mark up items so that they can hold onto their overpriced retail space. Not here. They have an amazing wall of Levi's jeans at competitive prices. Amazing Pendleton sweaters and jackets Uggs, North Face. Fishing poles, camping equipment,and Swiss army knifes are there too but it's more than a sporting goods store. All at reasonable prices. Bust-out your cell phone and check the online prices. By the time you add shipping and taxes it's the same or cheaper here at the outdoor store. If you are local, you should shop here. read more

I am all for supporting the local family owned businesses especially if they have good stuff and competitive prices. The Outdoor Store has both. Highlights are the shoe department which carries a great selection of sneakers, hikers, winter boots, slippers, and shoes-- all brands you will recognize like Merrell, Dansko, New Balance, etc. The outdoor store also has a nice selection of parkas, men's jeans, casual button down shirts, as well as a a good selection of women's workout clothing. Maynard Outdoor's prices are certainly fair; they were either the same as or less than REI and Dick's. I'm happy that I can support this independent business. read more

I have shopped at The Outdoor Store for over forty years after moving to the area from Arizona. It does have that "old school" feel but I like it. They have a good selection of competitively priced clothing, shoes and outdoor stuff that is a fit for my "lifestyle". The staff is sometimes "New Englandy" but, hey, this IS New England. read more

Mom and Pop shop with competitive prices and helpful, friendly knowledgeable staff! I mean it,! These places are going the way of the dinosaur but this one has what it takes to stay around for a long while with the winning combination I just listed above. They also have current models of good brands. We were looking for a local (to Concord) merchant of Muck Boots and stumbled upon this place. Besides these boots, my husband and I were looking for other clothes and other gear for ourselves for outdoor winter work. We found brands that we did not even know about but after researching found them to be good quality clothing with excellent reviews. We'll definitely return again! read more

I am disappointed that the Maynard Outdoor Store does not accept Amex. While trying to check-out the cashier rejected my Amex. The heavy-set cashier (receipt said Jess) tried to tell me that Amex charges twice what MC/Visa charge, and dismissed me while I tried to let her know her otherwise. (Amex charges 3.5%, and there is no way they are paying 1.75% for MC/Visa, most likely their rate is in the mid 2%s). She offered an incincere apology and took my Visa. I decided I wanted the pants more than I wanted to make a point and shop elsewhere. I really like that Maynard has a nice downtown shopping scene. I get that small businesses like this can't compete with Kohl's, Bob's, etc. on pricing. They need to compete with service, convenience and location. If I am willing to spend a premium to shop here, I think it is reasonable to expect them to accept all major credit cards. I own a small business, and of course I don't like to pay credit card processing fees. But I provide my customers with great service, and one part of that is accepting whatever method of payment they want to use. I realize this isn't that big a deal, and that many customers don't care. But it irks me to not be able to pay how I want. A business model that charges a price premium ought to accept Amex in this day. So good job Maynard Outdoor Store. You saved about $0.23 off my purchase, but lost a customer and the roughly $300 a year I used to spend at your store. read more

This is my favorite store in the area. it is a great place for casual clothing sporting goods, shoes and outerwear. I am not sure what we would do without the Outdoor Store. It is the best place to find all kinds of critical basics for us and our kids. It is the sort of store that used to exist in many small towns. Its very real and authentic with excellent brand name products at good prices. The store is light on merchandising but heavy on product selection. Plus the prices are generally discounted well off of the retail pricing. Even though its a small in town shop you will save over the big box stores. Employees are helpful and friendly and very knowledgeable. But they wont have the matching big box store polo shirts with plastic name tags and phony customer service training. read more

I love the Outdoor Store and its employees. On another note: Replying to Boogie S. of Brookline, whose comment appeared in Yelp on 3/24/2009 ("Many years back, Acton and Maynard attempted to merge high-schools for financial reasons and the snoots of Acton shut the plan down") -- there was more to the story than that. Involved was a merge not only of the high schools but a proposal for Acton to tie into the public sewer system in Maynard. I don't remember the specifics but it was a "schools for sewers" proposition which ultimately failed. Eventually Acton had to go it alone, building public sewers for only a small portion of the town. Most of the town is still on septic systems. read more

This is a great store. Not only is the selection great, but the prices almost always beat everywhere else - both the big chain stores like EMS and REI and online sites like Amazon. If you need any kinds of outerwear, shoes, etc. you should definitely visit the Maynard Outdoor Store. As for Benjamin S.'s opinion of Acton, he should check his facts. Acton turned down Maynard's request to regionalize for the same reason that other town did -- for decades the town of Maynard neglected its school system and it suffered greatly. Then the town felt the need to beg neighboring town to regionalize in efforts to pull it up by association. If Benjamin is upset with Acton over this, then he should turn some of that resentment elsewhere. read more

Yeah this is a great little (actually not so little) store. Its got tons of outdoorsy sorts of clothing and shoes etc. as well as other outdoor accessories. Its too bad there aren't many places left like this. It has a way better selection than the WalMarts of the world and the stuff is better and the staff know what they're talking about. I have been shopping at Maynard Outdoor Store since we first moved to the area 30 years ago. I bought my first pair of Levi's there when I was about twelve. You would give them your waist and length, and the person would disappear somewhere for a few minutes (I assumed up in the attic!) and inevitably come back down with the right size. They had every color of Levi's Cords known to man, too. Now, I bring my kids there and they love it too. Some of the people working there have been there since I can remember -- it must be a good place to work. Anyway -- I love the store. read more
