I had a wonderful experience with Jerry at Assabet River! I was lucky to find a beautiful Bianchi C-Sport 1 that Assabet had in stock, went over to test ride it, and purchased it a couple days later. The shop itself is in a really cool old mill building, and they have a wide selection of bikes even with the difficulties of the pandemic. This is an excellent shop with great mechanics. Tom Stevens does quality work and understands racing bikes very well. Carbon, steel, aluminum. He is a real pro. Lots of experience. I was researching for a bike shop that would rent me a bike for a trip down the Assabet River Rail Trail and back again. Unfortunately, my search was fruitless. However, I quite enjoyed my conversation with the fellow who answered my call at the Assabet River Bicycles shop. He told me that the closest bike shop that rented bikes was The Bikeway Source in Bedford, and that the Minute Man Trail was quite nice and longer than the currently 5 mile long Assabet River Rail Trail. Perhaps when the trail completes in 2017 (let's not hold our breath here) it'll be worth it for him to consider renting out bikes again despite the prohibitive cost of insurance. Too bad I couldn't rent a bike from Assabet River Bicycles this week... perhaps sometime in the future... read more

I brought my bike tire in to have a flat changed, simple right? I got it changed for $16. I went home put my tire on went for a ride and it went flat again. Brought it back they changed it again commenting on where do I ride anyway for it to go flat again so soon, someplace I've been riding for 2 years, another $16. Went to ride again the tire went flat again. Then I took a closer look at it and it was a piece of glass jammed in the outer tire, which was not pick upon the 2 previous visits and if your truly good at what you do it would have been picked up at the very first tire change. Needless to say they charged me for the tube on the third time, $8.49. I am changing it myself and NEVER USING THIS BIKE SHOP AGAIN!!! And the owner is rude!! Do not do business here. read more

I just bought my new Bianchi Cortina from Doug and Travis third past Saturday and it was the best retail buying experience I have EVER HAD! Even with all the necessary precautions due to Covid 19, they were super nice, helpful and showed me 3 bikes before I chose the right one for me. I just went back today and had Doug it on a new kick stand and it took him only 5 minutes! I highly recommend them and I will not be going anywhere else! read more

Great place! I had been to a few area bike shops, with little success, until I got to Assabet River Bikes. I was looking to replace my very outdated road bike, but had a budget towards the lower end (under $600). All the other stores I visited showed me bikes way above my budget. It may be that they just didn't carry anything in that price range, but I would prefer they just tell me if they didn't. At Assabet, the owner immediately told me there were only two bikes in that price range. He encouraged me to take one of the bikes for as long as I wanted for a test ride. I ended up really liking the bike and decided to purchase it. I felt zero pressure from the owner to buy it or any other accessories. He pumped up the tires, made sure the seat was properly adjusted, and informed me of the free tune up I was entitled to in a year. It was such an easy experience. I stayed within my budget, had an easy, low pressure purchase experience, and felt confident that I can go back to the shop with any questions or concerns. First of all let me say; the owner knows his stuff, not only brands, and manufactures, but how things will work. I went to this shop as it was the closest local shop to me. I wanted a fairly basic bike for a photography assignment I was working on, where a car would not be an option. The owner recommended a few bikes for me, some well out of my budgeted price range ($500+) but the owner wasn't upset when I made the bold move of asking him if he knew of any other local shops around, he recommended some to me with a smile, and told me the best move in my case was to shop around. I looked around the shop, and while it is very small and can be somewhat crowded at times, there is a lot to see there. Even though I didn't make a large purchase from him, I WILL be returning for any accessories or repairs, as it is just so rare to find that level of customer service today. Overall, if you're in the market for a new, high-end bike, this would be the place to go, if not to just check it out. read more

I went to this place with very little hope because I was told at Landrys in Westboro that my bike was a goner and that the gear couldn't be replaced. The tall guy there suggested I should donate the bike. I called my husband and he told me not to donate and get a second opinion. On a trip to a local restaurant in Hudson I had a chance to stop at ARB and asked the very nice gentlement there if it could be fixed and he said yes!~ Brought the bike a few days later and indeed he was able to change the gear that was bent. My bike is fine now. Doug was so nice and professional and I am impressed with his customer service skills. read more

First of all I tend to write reviews of a positive nature to reward a business for great service. This is not the case with Assabet River Bicycles who provided unprofessional service. Scenario was to replace bike 3 tubes. Day 1 - I called shop to check service pricing and to verify they had 20" tubes in stock. Was told yes and to come by as work would performed while I waited. Day 2 - Dropped off bikes and requested 3 new tubes be installed on two bikes and was told bikes will be ready next day or they will call. I also asked that they save the old tubes, so I could use as spares. Day 3 - silence Day 4 - Store left voice-mail that bikes were ready for pickup, process took longer than expected as parts had to be ordered. Day 5 - Arrived at the store to pickup bikes and noticed that 3 new tires along with tubes were replaced. The mechanic explained that the guy on Day 1 wrote down the wrong info. He explained that he was sorry and that there was no charge for the tires. In hind sight I should have accepted that offer and just left! As this was a small business I did not want them to incur the cost of the tires so I left the bikes another day so the situation could be corrected. Day 6 - Dealt with the owner "Doug" who showed us original work order that stated "replace 3 tubes". He was completely unapologetic about the situation and even threw in a snide comment to my wife placing blame for the mix up on me. When I asked for the 3 old tubes he stated "we threw them out". To which I asked for a new spare tire and he calmly threw me a new one. I instantly noticed the spare he gave me was not the correct size for our bikes (deliberate move on his part, you decide), but decided to post this review rather than ever deal with this shop again! read more

Horrible experience with this shop and the owner in particular! Owner Doug is quite condescending and rude. Shop does not honor quoted time estimates. I called the shop to confirm they had tubes for my foldable bikes in stock prior to vacation. Was told yes they are in stock and they could replace tubes while I waited. In fact 4 days later was when the bikes were finished. Even then my husband had to take off the front wheels on both bikes as the shop put the wheels on backwards preventing the bikes from fully folding up. The whole point of taking the bikes to the shop was so we wouldn't have to spend time working on the bikes and this shop failed miserably! Doug can be very friendly when he first meets you, but that will turn if you point out an issue with the work. He did not appreciate the fact that I mentioned the delay in completing the bikes and blamed having to pick up parts to which I mentioned he claimed the parts were in stock. read more

Bike busted? Take it here. Chris and Tom stayed open a half hour late to fix my squeaky brakes and bent derailleur hanger. They showed me everything they were doing and explained why... I've never gotten that treatment from an automobile mechanic. I don't have a lot of experience with bike repairs (mostly I've owned cheap bikes and rode them into the ground) but the price seemed reasonable to have my bike work properly and not crash. read more

The last visit to this place is a complete disaster! I went there with a torn front derailer cable. Doug, the owner, took the bike, fixed it for $30. He gave me a call with a strong suggestion to replace my "bad" chain, that was only 3 years old with probably 3000 miles on it. For another $30 I agreed. Then I got a call about having potential problems with occasional slipping chain, because of a bad rear box. I decided that I probably would put up with it for a while. Then I made a mistake of picking up my bike without a road test. When the next day I went on a 65 mile trip I found out that none of my 21 gears switched. When I came back to Doug, he didn't even listen to me. He said, that he had warned me about bad rear box, that everything worked fine when they checked it and that additional repairs would set me back by $60. He was very annoyed and rude. He clearly wasn't interested in listening to me. That's enough of my business with them!!! read more

I bought an 850 dollar set of carbon rims. The gentleman in the stor made it sound like they were perfect durable rims. Now that they melted and are all warped they are more then happy to replace them at retail price. It will cost me 250 a rim good deal right... I spent 1600 dollars replacing my drive train and new rims to get this treatment. I would never go back there. I ride a lot and went there for the service.. Stick with landrys read more

After riding home last night without rear brakes, I took my bike into Assabet River Bicycles in Hudson, where Chris noticed that my rear line was coming apart. He quietly replaced it and then did a quick run through my gears. He made some adjustments and my bike has never road so well. Chris not only fixed my bike but he also talked to me about the up keep. I had purchased random parts, tires, tubes and whatnot, from this store in the past. Now I was pretty sure my bottom bracket was toast based on some noises I heard. I brought it in, told them I was going on vacation and didn't need the bike back for a week. The bike was on the stand before I left, and finished later that day so I got some riding in before I left. I also had them replace the chain and a couple of cables that were problematic. The work was reasonably priced, done well and they only replaced what needed to be replaced. And, not that this should be the reason to go there, they play great music. read more

Quality is seriously lacking - I would give less than one star if possible! I brought my bike here for the first time a few days ago. My chain had come off and my bike needed an overall tune-up before a triathlon. I dropped it off on Friday and told them I needed to pick it up Saturday for the triathlon Sunday morning. They seemed nice and knowledgeable, if not a bit pricey. I got the bike Saturday afternoon after calling to make sure it was done (they didn't call me, I had to call them). I was 5.5 miles out of 14 miles through the bike leg of the triathlon when the crankarm came off my bike. I almost crashed on Rt. 20 but I managed to get off the road in time. I had to kick my crankarm back onto my bike every 100 yards or so for 9 miles of the bike leg to even get trough the race and it ended up costing me placement in my age group (I was on pace for 2nd) and it wasted my $80 entry fee and endless hours of training. I called Doug, the owner, up on Monday to explain the situation and left a message he called me back. When we spoke, I explained the situation and told him that I thought the crankarm came off as a result of negligence of the tune-up or an oversight. He said that "if it was loose, they would have seen it and tightened it". He made sure to tell me that my bike was cheaply made (retailed for $1500 and has shimano components). I was very patient and calm on the phone and said that I was looking for a refund of my $60 fee for the tune-up that I didn't feel they did. He laughed at me. The conversation ended with him telling me he had other customers and that he can't do anything for me. For a small bike shop, I thought it was a bit ridiculous to blow me off and not try to get my business in the future or at least make amends after this incident. Had they just refunded my money I probably wouldn't have posted anything negative and brushed it off as a mistake. I have completely lost my trust in their work and told the owner as much. He didn't seem to care and pretty much blew me off to attend to his "other customers". If they take this little pride in maintaining loyal customers, I don't see how they can take any pride in their work and I strongly suggest you save your cash and time for another bike shop. read more

Bought a new mountain bike and BMX bike here they got me a good deal even though they had to order it the mountain bike and it arrived quickly. Really happy with my bikes. Rode 300+ miles with minimal issues until a week ago my rear hub on my mountain bike broke. Took it to the shop and they quickly contacted the manufacturer for warranty service. Got a new wheel set, cassette, and tires under warranty so couldn't be happier. Also adjusted my derailleurs for me and shifting is better now. I would recommend this shop for most bike issues I could think of. read more

10 miles into what was meant to be an all day ride, I found myself with a broken spoke. Luckily, I had broken down a few miles away from Assabet River Bicycles. I hobbled over to the shop and realized I had hit the jackpot. The owner quickly fixed the spoke and re-trued the wheel (and did the same for the other wheel), and he charged a more than fair price. I'd have to disagree with most on this one. I brought in two bikes for new tires. It started out bad when they told me I had a Walmart bike. Not sure why it mattered and I know its not but I guess people from Walmart don't deserve to get their bikes fixed here. On their recommendation, I got the same tire for both. When I arrived, the two bikes had two different tires! Also noticed the tire post caps were missing on one bike and had to go back in for them. The guy at the store seemed great and wanted to help but could only say maybe they were out of one or two different people worked on the bikes. I took the bikes, told them I was displeased and suggested the owner call me. Never heard from him. Also, I found it odd they can't they don't call you when you're bike is ready, you have to call and check. In the end, they did a nice job on the tires but the customer service really needs improving. read more
