Been going to Max's Tavern for more than 20 years..... Disappointed with last nights meal....and now not sure about the direction of the food at this location. Starting with the server's hand held computer...this isn't Friendly's with Friendly's prices...memorize or write down the order please! Specialty drinks were 2/3's full...beer was luke warm. Wedge salad was not the old/chilled wedge on a plate with real blue cheese chunks & real bacon...but rather limp/warm iceburg lettuce leaves in a bowl with runny dressing, bacon substitute, and pickled onions? Tuna tacos were 2...not 3...and were very small with sparce tuna. The old/delicious brick pressed chicken is now called roasted chicken....so instead of a delicious/descent size free range chicken portion on a bed of delicious mashed w/gravy....we received a tiny leg and thigh over a puree of sweet potato with sides of shredded brussel sprouts and what appeared to be be a piece of large/mushy/green French toast? Skipped the usual dessert....had had enough! read more

I'm so disappointed in tonight's experience and would usually chalk service issues up to just a bad night! I've always had great experiences even if it was busy at the bar,.. and have enjoyed the intimate experience while speaking with other customers and the bartenders! When I arrived at the bar, the bartenders were hovered at the service bar and didn't acknowledge me. I sat there patiently with my mask on making it very obvious that I was waiting. It was only as two other women sat down at the bar,. closer to the service bar that the conversation ceased between the bartenders! After ending the conversation with her co-worker, one of the bartenders proceeded to walk to the other end of the bar(right by me with no acknowledgment whatsoever that I was sitting there!) to check on other customers. As she made her way back to the center of the bar, she FINALLY acknowledged me! The two women were of a different race than I was as well as all the other customers at the bar! (Please note,.. I have been in customer service mainly hospitality as a senior leader in Marriott hotels for the last 35 years! I've been a GM of a hotel! I know service and generally would never bring race into my review or write a negative review! I've been on the receiving end of negative reviews!) I ordered a seltzer/club soda and she provided me tap water. I mentioned that I wanted seltzer and she immediately corrected the issue and apologized. I mentioned that I would be ordering a cocktail (rose') and something to munch on before placing two orders to go. The calamari was wonderful,.. excellent presentation. The bartender did check in on me which was appreciated. I then placed an order for another glass of rose' and for my to go order which was two salads,.. both with salmon but one was supposed to be the iceberg crunch salad and the other was the salad with apples. I returned home to discover the order was not correct. I just spent the last 1/2 hour creating the salad that I ordered. Disappointing experience as a Max Vantage customer! My son and I stopped at Max's during the week in December for lunch. We were visiting the Hall of Fame and it was convenient to stop. We were greeted right away and given the option of sitting in the dining room or bar area. We sat at a high table in the bar. Both of us had Tavern Burgers which were quite filling and cooked to perfection. Waitress was friendly and attentive. This definitely seems like a great place to sit, have a few beverages, and enjoy a game. Max's has a touch of class and a solid menu. I would definitely return. read more

Great local spot! A vegan, pescatarian (myself) and a meat eater went together and were all able to find options. I had a Cesar salad with blackened salmon and a side of fries. I love the option to have the salmon blackened or regular- a nice touch to personalize your meal. Drinks were great also. read more

My wife and enjoyed a couple of steaks. Ciara, our server, was excellent, answered questions about the menu and very attentive. The steaks were cooked very well. It we both thought the "preparations" were a little over the top. The Asperger's was the same way, it was cooked really well but the lentil sauce took away from it. Service was good and fast. The bread is UH-MAZ-ING, and if you see the sweet corn fritters on the menu, get them! You will not regret it. I was a little disappointed with my salad though. I went for lunch and paid $12 for tomatoes and watermelon as a "salad". I added chicken for $6 and it was well worth it but the salad itself was not. Their inspiring menu is a "crowd pleaser" full of fresh seasonal dishes, scrumptious seafood and sizzling steaks grilled to perfection. We started with enormous shrimp and flavorful oysters, progressed to a tangy apple and kale salad and were delighted by their foie gras platter. Their curry salmon dish was a flavor experience that should not be missed. The prime rib was spot on. Be sure to save room for their desserts- we shared their seasonal peach tart with fresh peach ice cream and it was dreamy. I took my husband here for his birthday lunch, as part of a trip to the Hall of Fame. The food was excellent, but the atmosphere was terrible. We opted to sit outside out of concern over virus transmission. Not only is the outdoor seating area right on the parking lot, but you can also clearly see and hear traffic on the interstate from it. I wonder why they don't put in some kind of barrier - a wall? planters to grow a hedge? - to block out the traffic. Instead, they played loud pop music over the speakers, and it was really hard to have conversation over the din. The server even brought us the wrong drinks because she couldn't hear us. Cool looking restaurant with outdoor seating bar seating and dining room seating. Menus are a little confusing. Same items on the 2 menus are priced different. Not sure why. I tried the pulled pork soup. It was a spicy BBQ pork stew. It was not great. The cheeseburger sliders were ok. The Caesar salad was good. The meatloaf with cheddar mashed was ok. The potatoes were good the meatloaf lost something with addition of a sauce that I can't place. It took away from the true taste of the meatloaf. Overall I thought the menu was expensive for what it was. $8 soup. $13 sliders. The meatloaf was reasonable at $17 Some of the other items seemed ridiculously overpriced. read more

This is our weekly must have. We have become regulars at the bar. The steaks are absolutely the best ever! I've had $90 dry aged steaks and they don't even compare to Max's. My favorite topping is the Gorgonzola balsamic one. The chicken is also a top fav, it literally falls off the bone! For apps we are addicted to the shrimp cocktail cup. It's ridiculously delicious and we always have to get a half dozen of oysters(always fresh). Also the blue cheese salad is the bomb! We do really miss the hall of fame bread and pray that you bring it back! Also the black squid ink dish that had shrimp & fava beans was our fav. Maybe bring it back as a special? Still great after all these years. We come annually to celebrate our anniversary since Max's catered our wedding. Food and service is always excellent. Today our waitress Taylor and the woman in charge of front of house (I think Alaina or Alyssa) were so nice and went above and beyond to acknowledge our anniversary. The Oahu Tai - ok so the listed drink is a good choice it compliments any meal, it's on the sweeter side but they are not stingy on the alcohol...trust me. Blue river- they are serving drinks which calamari- so they add fried lemon to the calamari which gives the calamari an interesting twist and I mean that in a good way. It's truly a must try. becsuse of the lemon, it is one of the best calamari appetizers ive ever enjoyed. seared duck breast- faroe island salmon- the Aleppo honey glaze adds good flavor to a salmon that could use more. The couscous sauce was spicy and complimented the dish well service - very friendly and hospitable. knowledgeable about the food and drinks the only criticism is the portion size. both the seared duck breast and faroe island salmon's portions are very small (4 pieces of duck) and a small (but thick) flank of salmon. read more

I came here for happy hour on Sunday night and was not disappointed! It has plenty of parking and quick to get to off the highway. There was a happy hour menu and drink specials available in the bar area where the wait staff was extremely attentive. The beef tenderloin for $8 was an amazing deal and delicious. The options for happy hour are pretty extensive and all very good. I recommend stopping in! read more

I don't even know where to start with this place. Between the lack of attention from the waitress to the poor quality of food it was a just awful place to eat. Start off with starters. We got short ribs and calamari. Short ribs were decent. A bit over cooked but had some good taste. The "crispy calamari" is surprisingly soggy and greasy with a fall of the calamari breading. (Probably cause once again it was soggy) but fine hey maybe dinner will be good. Scallops are under cooked almost raw! The steak was cooked fine but when dropped off to me I couldn't get a steak knife. When I look for my waitress I see her with another couple (who are drunk off their mind shooting the shit and she is sitting at the table with them. I don't need my server to be up my butt but I would like for them to do the basics of their job. The worst part was it wasn't even busy! A hand full of tables a huge staff! Finish it off with dessert. Bland no taste or any flavor at all! Then when we request the check she come over with the wrong check!! Charging me for a table she wasn't even serving! As always the food was wonderful. Max's is always my first choice when meeting people in Springfield. As someone who doesn't eat steak, I appreciate the effort and skill that is put into other types of dishes. This visit earned a 5 star rating due to the service proved by Rich. He knew the menu and specials like I have never seen. He made smart suggestions about how to pair foods for the optimum tasting experience. Pains me to write this, as I'm a big fan of Max Downtown and particularly Max Burger. This restaurant is not worthy of the Max Group's solid name. We went at 2pm on a holiday Monday, so super slow and not at lunch rush. Really no excuse. We had to wait 20 minutes for soda. "The bartender has a full bar, so..." was the reason given. With two kids in tow, this is not a viable reason. Then we ask for bread. This too takes 20 minutes, this time we are told "it's baking and we prefer to have it come out fresh". When it finally did arrive, it wasn't fresh. And this is coming from a now ravenous diner. Lunch finally arrives, about 45 minutes after we sat. The burger was just ok (we really wanted a turkey burger but, alas, they were out of turkey (?!)). My wife ordered a basic chopped salad with grilled shrimp. Only a few small shrimp provided, but the salad was rendered practically inedible due to abundance of scallions (see pic...eeew). Anyway, bill comes and I was certain that our sodas would be comped for obvious and sustained fails. No such luck, but by this time I has my dander up so I requested a chat with the manager. He said he needed to "consult with his colleagues". Oy. More waiting, and the drinks were comped, but my afternoon was really affected by this lousy experience. read more

4.5 stars Came here for lunch with my mom and sister before returning to the 'real word' after being home for the holidays. We got here right as lunch was starting (ie right as they were opening) so we were the first ones in the door. Even after other patrons started to trickle in, service was very attentive. Anytime our glasses were half full, the waiter would come over and refill for us. Located next to the basketball hall of fame, I think this place is a nice change from the more typical chains in the area. Inside, the place had a warm tavern-y feel (hence the name). I liked the dark wood finishes. Although I was here for lunch, I can see this place being a good date night spot. There were many items on the menu that sounded good to me, but I decided to go with one of the specials... pan seared striped bass over a bed of stir fried veggies, wild mushrooms, and noodles. I was -so- happy with this choice. The fish was amazing, perfectly seared, crisp outer layer, and moist and flaky on the inside. My mom went with the turkey BLT (came with homemade potato chips and sweet pickles) and my sister got the tuna tacos. They both enjoyed theirs as well (judging by all of our clean plates!) Thankfully we all left a bit of room for dessert. Before seeing the full dessert menu, my sis and I were leaning towards the gelato and sorbet trios... but on seeing the full menu, I opted for the creme brulee with berries. Pretty good food, but talk about price inflation! I enjoyed the salmon dish but my brother ordered a steak that he did not care for and it was $54. Our bill for a party of 5 was like $440. The first time I had Max's, I ordered the Max a Penne (extra spicy, o'course), and it was so delicious - cheesy, spicy and lightly sauced with thick chunks of grilled chicken. Yum. I ordered it four times more, and it's increasingly watery in flavor. Sad. Why do I keep ordering it? I seriously don't know. Don't ask dumb questions. Ha. Just kidding. (I know, I need to stop ordering it.) They have some okay things. The calamari is nice and crispy with bits of spicy, pickled banana peppers. Artichoke dip is thick and gooey. We've had ribeye steaks Oscar style. Pretty good (not great). Chocolate cake is decent. All in all, average place. Man, I feel so bored writing this review. That's how I feel about the food on the whole. They don't do well with takeout here (if you have anti-social coworkers who do not want to eat dinner with you). They will always give you a 20-25 minute window, but it's more like 35 minutes (maaaybe). Get a Black Cadillac shot while you're waiting (Patron Cafe + splash of Baileys). I will give it two stars because the other two people with me enjoyed their meals, and also the local beer they had (with part of it being donated to charity). The bread and their butter was pretty good, and the other people with me liked their apps (shrimp cocktail). They also said their meals were good (filet and fish n chips). Me on the other hand, ugh. The meal was just gross. I don't know why, but i went with the tuna tacos, and they were just disgusting. I won't even get into it, but they are awful. My meal was the chicken, and it was like cooked all weird and the whole plate was like soupy and gross. Great place by the Basketball Hall of Fame. It has a nice outdoor patio as well as a cool, bar-like atmosphere for inside seating. I ordered the tuna tacos for appetizers and the scallops for the entree. I thought the tacos were good! The scallops were very juicy and had a great texture as well. Dined here after going to the Basketball Hall of Fame (located in the same building). Overall I enjoyed the food, service and atmosphere. I had the Kale Salad and while it was good, learned I am not a fan of raw kale. I also had the French Dip sandwich, which was delicious! Served with equally delicious truffle fries. This place goes down as one of our favorite steakhouses. We were in town for a basketball tournament. I reserved a table for my family and so lucky we did. The service was exceptional and everything we ordered was spectacular. They were able to sit us down right away for 5 even though my reservation was only for 4 ( they were booked solid). You should put it right on the front page of your website if you decide to close your doors due to Covid. Caught in Uber over here to have dinner. I get out and walk up to the door and it's locked. There's a notice on the door that says due to Covid we will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday. That should be on your website which is where I looked before I came here. Now I'm having to stand out here in the cold and wait for my next to her to take me to another restaurant. Just a little notice on your website would've spared you this review.
