Our plan B after Plan B. I'd never been to Max's as we always went to "the burger place next door" for late-night eats. After having our ears abused with what could only be described as "dance-mix Top 40 played through a wall of amplifiers" at Plan B, we walked next door to Max's. And I'm REALLY glad we did.
Seating was open on the patio, restaurant, and in the tavern (bar) area, and we chose to sit in the bar. Happy Hour had begun (it was just after 9PM), per the host who sat us.
Ambiance:
-I really appreciate the atmosphere of this place. It's muted and sexy, the place you can take a date to, or stop by after work. It's very versatile. I look forward to coming back and enjoying the patio on a summer night at some point.
-the crowd was a mix of business professionals, couples, friends, and solo patrons.
-If anything, they kept it a little TOO cold (even for this nasty summer we've been having). Bring a light jacket/sweater if you get chilly.
Service:
-Service from beginning to end was exceptional. We were greeted immediately, seated by the host, and our waitress was helpful and for the most part, prompt.
-The servers and bartenders here are quite friendly, yet professional. Any questions about the menu were easily answered by our waitress. She spoke with every other table the same way. It truly felt like a "dinner service" and less like "a bite to eat".
-Toward the end of our meal (and likely, toward closing time for Max's), I did notice that our waitress became less attentive, but that may be situational.
Food:
-I am very pleased that I rolled the dice and ordered off the Happy Hour menu. Traditionally, this is either a very good-- or a very bad-- decision. The Happy Hour menu (food) is mostly tapas-sized plates per our waitress, but I was surprised to see that they were fairly large portions. I ordered the stewed mussels and the marinated hanger steak.
-The stewed mussels ($6, smoked tomatoes, chorizo, roasted garlic butter, grilled focaccia) were fairly good, with a rich, robust flavor that was unexpected; however, a couple of mussels were overcooked and a few were gritty. This was a hearty portion that would be sizeable enough for a light eater (dozen or more mussels).
-The marinated hanger steak was a big gamble. I had to ask how it's served ($8, cooked to order, sliced and served with horseradish cream). I ordered mine medium rare. This steak DELIVERED. It was probably 4-5 ounces of steak, perfect for accompanying the mussels or another tapas-size dish. And it. was. phenomenal. Cooked perfectly, excellent flavor.
Based on many other reviews, I'm a bit perplexed. The regular menu is a bit "steep" but no more so than any restaurant of the same caliber; a burger and fries is $16... par for the course. In my eyes, you're getting what you pay for: high quality, tasty food in a nice restaurant with great service for a "little extra" cash. Happy Hour is a fantastic opportunity to try a few popular dishes for a lot less dinero. The size of the tapas plates are larger than most I've had, so expect to get a bigger bang for your buck.
If you haven't been to Max's in awhile, or if you've not yet been, stop in during Happy Hour and linger on the porch awhile for me. It looks like they mix up some killer summer cocktails! read more
