Food and flavor were good. The wait, however, ridiculous. Their system wasn't good. Our server kept needing to be called via other wait staff because the rest of her tables were in an area perpendicular to ours and she couldn't really see us, nor did she make the trek back to us on a regular basis. So a typical hour-long dining, became over 2 hours. We had 3 ordered dishes. Three. We had a short visit at VB so we had our days planned and Max's was our first stop on our map. We didn't have another chance to visit to see if that was a one off. Hopefully, next time we are in town, they've streamlined their system. Very Filipino as you enter! The smell of fried chicken and everything fried and sour. There are two long tables with party of at least 15 people each. Every staff member is Filipino. You feel the Filipino hospitality. The price is a little pricier than typical turo turo Filipino restaurants . They do try to upsell everything - I ordered water and they indicated they have calamansi juice. I ordered the classic pork sisig and upsold the pork kawali sisig. They charge separate for rice! I went to try Max for the first time I never had the palabok pancit before but I ordered it for take out only a few shrimps. It was ok not the best. It was my first time trying palabok pancit. I should have tried the one at some other fast food restaurant or local one before a chain. I went in to order and the guy was nice and helpful. I also ordered a shanghai lumpia but that was too soft not crispy at all. It was a 15 minute wait i think he said it was nice and clean inside at it just opened at 11am The sauce seem not that good in the pancit. I had utensils in my bad. It was still hot and fresh when got home. I may try to go again to get canton pancit next time not sure. I ordered take out for Max's Restaurant and when I went inside it immediately smelled so aromatic I told my husband we have to go inside and try their food next time. I only wanted to try their halo halo for dessert since I had already eaten and wanted to compare it to Red Ribbon's and omg I think I found my new favorite place to eat halo halo! It was a bit more expensive at a whopping $10 but honestly the amount you get is so worth it! There were more fillings and it didn't get watered down as the ice melted which is usually the problem I have when I eat the one at red ribbon. Went here on a Saturday evening. The interior was clean and well lit. I like the pancit canton and classic pork sisig. The whole Max's chicken was flavorful as usual. It was disappointing though because they ran out of rice. Our server Rose was nice but did not check on us afterwards. We wanted to ask for some things but we could not find her. The first Max's restaurant from the Philippines to open in the DMV area. The food was decently priced for the portions provided, the Crispy Pata for example was huge. The famous "Max's Fried Chicken" was also very good. The Pork BBQ Skwers also surprised me as to how good it was, it was longer than a regular BBQ stick and it came with 4. I also thought it was funny that they have a specific Togo box that fits the BBQ stick, so don't worry if you need to take it home. I ordered an assortment of food and all came out good and everything tasted great. I'm sure the past reviews here were from when they first opened so they were probably very busy. I came in on a Wednesday afternoon and it was not busy at all for dine-in. For the amount of food we ordered it all came out in less than 20 minutes so the wait was not bad at all. Had lunch here with a friend yesterday. It's worth keeping in mind that they basically serve "family style" portions. My friend ordered the kabobs and pancit bijou along with an order of lumpia. I had the fried milkfish and garlic rice. The food was mostly good (although I was treated to a large piece of plastic in the pancit which pretty much ended my meal). I am excited because it reminds me of the times we celebrated birthdays, graduations, and family gatherings when we were still in the Philippines. Location/Ambiance: The restaurant is located in Landstown Commons. It is huge, and they have an area for parties/gatherings. Service: Although they recently opened, the wait times are not too long. They ensured that their customers did not have to wait for a long time, whether they were waiting for a table, food, or bills. They are still busy and new, so please be patient with them. Price: Max's is not your usual Filipino restaurant/eatery. Besides the fact that they are a franchise from the Philippines, people are paying for nostalgia and good food. You may find this restaurant expensive if you order your usual Filipino foods such as sisig, pork sinigang, and kare-kare. However, if you are ordering Filipino foods (chicharon bulaklak, bulalo, crispy pata) that you seldom see in local Filipino restaurants, their prices are worth it. Pork Sisig - This is my least favorite from their menu. It is mushy, and it has an unappetizing smell. Garlic Fried Rice - aka Sinagag. Filipino's most famous fried rice. Beef Bulalo (Beef Shank Soup) - Is it supposed to be garlicky? It's been more than 17 years since I had bulalo, so I don't remember what it tasted like. I thought it was similar to Nilaga (another beef soup). Nonetheless, it is rich and tasty, maybe because of the garlic flavor. Another popular Filipino chain restaurant opened in VA Beach, this is the first location in Virginia and I've never been before so you know I had to check it out. The grand opening was yesterday so today was pretty busy as well. By the time we got there the we were told the wait was about 1.5hrs. We ended up waiting under an hour until our table was ready. When we sat down we were greeted by our server and he proceeded to take our orders. We got the mango juice, crispy pata, kare-kare, lechon sisig, daaing bangus & a whole chicken. The food came out pretty quick and we started to dig in. The kiddos ate the kare-kare so fast but we were able to try it. The beef was soft and tender and the veggies were crisp and not over done, it was a hit. The crispy pata was big, crispy, juicy and flavorful especially with the vinegar dipping sauce, so good. Lechon sisig was also very good and came out on a hot sizzling plate. The bangus was ok and I was expecting more for the chicken since that is what they are known for, I'll have to give it a try again later on. As if that wasn't enough food. We had to get dessert. We got the halo halo and we all shared, it was a generous serving and had a big scoop of ube ice cream on top. This was very good and refreshing. A pleasant surprise from another former classmate's recommendation. A Filipino sit-down restaurant is quite a rarity in the area with a sitting capacity of 122, and in a relaxing warm Sunday afternoon near a pretty water fountain at the beautiful Landstown Commons in Virginia Beach, it was wonderfully filled with Filipinos. The atmosphere was modern with a nice minimalistic design of wooden tables, lanterns above booths, a back wall with a green abstractly design that reminded me of banana leaves, and Filipino servers wearing black handkerchiefs around their necks. Servers wearing a themed uniform and the modern island inspired style, shows that this is the type of a Filipino restaurant that wants to showcase the classy and cool and comfortable side of the Philippines. Perhaps, the nice resort aspect of the islands where guests are served well by the nice staff. Unlike other Filipino places in Hampton Roads, I actually had to wait for my seat. I was told, I guess, a 35 to 40 minute wait, but I was able to get seated in about 10 minutes when I made my decision. The menu was basically a pamphlet with easy to read descriptions of the Filipino dishes, so even a "foreigner" can make a good decision with little assistance. And, my Pepsi was served in a glass cup. What class! I am definitely not in a takeout place! Since Max's is known for their chicken, why not start with their signature dish? It comes with fries. It was described to be chicken that was golden fried with a unique blend of spices. That sound delicious! I also ordered the Kare-Kare which is beef peanut stew. The nice lady server recommended it with rice and I was slightly surprised that rice cost extra, but I wasn't too shocked since this is a restaurant on a whole different level. And, it was quite good! The fried chicken had roasted thin skin texture but was evenly fried and quite tasty. Peeling the skin back, you are welcomed with a nice tender and moist chicken meat. The whole dish was slightly seasoned and was quite good. I was told by the nice server lady to combined the sweet banana sauce, the Worcestershire sauce and the Tabasco sauce to make the restaurant's special sauce, so I did. It was wonderful with the chicken. It comforted it with a sweet and tangy balance and added a kick of spice! What a great sauce combination! And, since the ingredients were given to me, I can make it at home. Overall, the chicken dish was quite delicious and the fries dipped in the sweet banana sauce rounded it out and the slice oranges were a nice touch. The banana leaf on the corner of the plate really adds in to the decor. The Kare Kare was perfectly seasoned and the beef was perfectly tender. I had this dish before many times and this one was quite good from this restaurant! The beef had that nice soft and tender, fatty flavor. Also, the peanut stew was creamy with chopped cabbage, eggplant and string beans which added some texture and the big bowl of soft white steamed rice definitely made sure it was quite filling. The peanut stew also served as a nice gravy mixed in. What also enhances the Kare Kare experience was the shrimp paste, it packs a wallop of salty goodness to the peanut gravy and rice, but it is an acquired taste! Now for dessert, the Halo Halo was a nice cool experience with chopped ice, pieces of jelly and beans along with other elements like Ube ice cream. It was a milky and creamy kind of entrée that reminds of sweet cereal in a good Saturday morning. Overall, this is a great place to impress and welcome your non-Filipino friends to dishes of the Philippines and to try the meals cooked to perfection that if you have money to splurge.
