Susan's is one of the local spots for getting your Filipino fix. The staff is friendly and welcoming as well as the space. Importantly the food feels like home. If you are need of a comfort meal this is the place. The portions are large for a good price and I can stretch it for more than one meal. This past visit I ordered a 2 entree plate with chicken adobo and chicken stew with pancit. I also got some lumpia and Turon and ordered some Palabok for a co-worker. I stopped by Susan's Kitchenette because I was in the area and wanted some lumpia. When I walked in there was only one person ahead of me. They didn't have a menu posted, so I was given one when I asked. The food is cafeteria style where your plate is made in front of you. They had several options like fish, pork belly, menudo, lumpia, pancit, rice, sisig, and etc. They also had desserts, chips, turon, and drinks. I chose menudo, pancit, pork belly, and lumpia with a side of sauce for about $15. The prices seemed pretty reasonable. The portions were decent also. The menudo was flavorful and filling the meat was tender but there were a few pieces with fat. The pancit was tasty. It wasn't heavy on vegetables, I wish there were more. The pork belly was crispy and I liked it, but a few pieces were over cooked and had an awkward burnt old flavor. I can't really explain it. But the taste caught me off guard. I enjoyed the lumpia. They had beef inside and went good with the sauce. Their sweet chili sauce is yellow, not like most that are orangeish red. But it was good. The staff was busy. They didn't really talk much, but were nice. They also have a banquet room for private events. I do like their Filipino food more than some other places in the area. Susan's is SO good! I always get the combo #3 with pancit, chicken curry & beef stew and it never disappoints. I'd be hard pressed to say what my favorite dish is--they all have such amazing flavor. Good portions and very reasonably priced. Lumpia is always good and fresh, too! Nice dessert selection. The entrees aren't labeled however the staff is super helpful if you ask what each of the dishes are. We typically order for takeout but there's a back room with seating if you want to dine in. This is my go to spot for fast on the go Filipino food. I love their chicken adobo, chicken pancit and lumpia. The food is always flavorful and hot. I enjoy stopping in for a bit to eat or sitting in the seating area they have off to the left of the open counter space in between the ballroom area. This is one of the best Filipino restaurants around. You're always in and out, even if there is a line, the food is delicious and they provide great portion sizes. It is small, but they do also have a dining area where you can sit down. There is a lot of days when I dont feel like cooking and Susan's makes this real easy not to. You can get a combo meal with 2 entrees with your choice of rice or pancit for a real affordable price. They give you a good portion too. The service was is excellent but they can get busy but they always try their best. This is mainly a dind, takeout and catering business but they have some seating available to eat in. They have two banquet rooms too for functions if needed. It was a buffet at the counter and the 2 ladies there were not very friendly or helpful with ordering. I was kinda confused. There seemed to be a dining room in the back. I'm particular about other people's Filipino cooking, but I must say that the diniguan and menudo tasted like my grandma's cooking. However, the fried bangus was a bit overcooked, and the royal bibingka cake was dry, almost like chewing rubber. The service was okay, but I felt a bit rushed through the line, hence I did not get any photo shot of the food. This place has people lined up out the door on a Friday night in order to get their take away to take home of the best pancit and lumpia for the price. For seven dollars you can get a full stacked plate of pancit and three lumpia, although we always get an entire other container of lumpia because there's no way that anyone is going to just eat one or two of those delicious morsels. They have various stews and items like fried fish, as well as a cold case with desserts, including items made with Ube. The most fun aspect though is that in the banquet room right next-door sometimes they have karaoke going on, so consider this one of those hidden gems that you'll find off the beaten path here in Virginia Beach. Our party was in one of the banquet rooms and the room itself was a decent size where you can easily fit 100 guests with a dance floor. And as a guest, I sat very comfortably at one of the tables. The food is too good to be true and the only thing better than the food is the hospitality. The atmosphere comes across as a friend's home and not a restaurant. When regulars welcome you like you've been there before you know it's good. The pancit was extraordinary and the lumpia was so good I ordered 10 to go. And if you're a karaoke beast be prepared to battle. People were so good when I first walked in I thought it was the radio. I was just looking for a parking lot to set my gps and I looked up and I saw a little sign that said the name of the restaurant and I looked it up and I realized it had good reviews. I went in and they had a bakery section on one side and a had "build your own meal" type of food. There was a large selection of food - you pick what you want (1 entree and 2 entree combo plates). I came for the Dinuguan (Chocolate Meat - entree not for everyone) and pork adobo (2 entrees) My daughter picked the chicken Adobo (1 entree). Our dinner was excellent. Large portions (I'll probably go with 1 entree next time as the portions provided is a lot and yummy). Selection of pick and go desserts including puto, ube and ensaymada. Good sized eating area with lots of condiments. Even had a karaoke machine where regulars come in and sing. Excellent place. Highly recommend. A real bargain. Me and my husband both got pancit, I got pork ribs and he got pork stew. The pancit was delicious and the pork was super tender. My husband did complain a bit about the amount of small bones in his pork but he didn't seem to mind too much. We also tried the mung bean cakes from the little bakery area and sapin sapin. We did not like the mung bean cakes but I did enjoy the sapin sapin. It was a glutinous rice dessert flavored with coconut milk and ube. As we were leaving we did grab a couple of the lumpia to go. They are Super close in proximity to me and they were able to indulge my last minute request for 50 lumpia an hour prior(despite them having graduation orders to fill with limited staff). I like the way they season their lumpia and the size of their lumpia. I like their pancit as well. It seems to be always busy when I do go, but the wait isn't very long. Almost Five years ago I had a family get together there for family out of town the day after my wedding in their smaller banquet room. They only had one at the time but have now expanded to a second one that is way bigger and even nicer. The smaller one is nice as well and has a karaoke machine that we utilized as well at the time. A quick review of my visit on July 14, 2020. A co-worker suggested lunch spot. A great selection of food. I had chicken adobo and rice, which was flavorful. Left full, primarily due to the mass quantity of white rice. No brown rice available. Too much rice dished up, not enough chicken! A lot to choose from, but there should be a way to identify what is what without a customer asking. Employees friendly and appeared happy to be working. Our table was clean. Parking wasn't an issue and this establishment appeared to be in a safe area. For a first visit, a 3-star rating is very fair. I used to live in San Diego and was surrounded by Filipino restaurants so when I moved here and found out this place was right down the street from my house I i was so excited to try it. It wasn't until after i got my food and was checking in on yelp that I realized this place has a terrible health score. The women behind the counter were really nice. Inside it looked like any other Filipino restaurant I've ever been to. Except they have a side for banquets and stuff which is pretty cool. I got the chicken adobo and pork menudo with rice and i also got the pancit and egg rolls (lumpia?) combo. The pancit was gross. It actually was the worst pancit I've ever had, I don't know if it was just an off day or what, but I ended up throwing it away after trying a bite or two. The chicken adobo was just okay, it was tender but kinda dry on the inside The pork menudo was good. I probably would've never come here after reading the health score violations, but if the food tasted better I would've probably ignored that and came back. I rarely leave a review, but I felt I needed to. I ordered chicken pancit with extra vegetables for Thanksgiving work lunch for 15 people. It was $45 for a small pan, which I didn't have a problem with, however, the problem is if there was 15 small pieces of chicken, that's being very generous with hardly any vegetables. It was offensive! I called to explain my frustration. The lady was curt and said she'll let the manager know. She didn't even ask for my phone # for the manager to call back.
