    Halo-Halo Special

I've always walked past this place going to Jollibee, so I finally got the courage to try it. The food was extremely tasty and flavorful! I'm a huge fan of Lechon, and it did not disappoint; the meat was juicy with a crispy skin and had some much flavor. The garlic rice paired well with the lechon, so I highly recommend. The pancit palabok was pretty good, but it needed a more citrus taste. The service was okay. They seemed very monotone when it came to taking our order; however, they were pretty quick with the food and getting boxes for our table. The only issue I had was that they asked if we wanted garlic rice or white rice with the lechon, but I couldn't tell if rice came with the lechon already or if it was an additional cost. We got the garlic rice, and it was about $10 for a large amount. The ambiance is very nice and simple. There's a lot of seating and parking lot, so that's nice to know!

While it is a chain, I used to go to Max's all the time as a kid and kind of remember it being a lot better. Their famous fried chicken was a bit disappointing to be honest. Lumpia was okay. Sisig and bbq skewers were decent. Inflation has definitely hit this one and I felt like I paid more than I wanted for just okay. There are better options popping up throughout Chicago and Chicagoland. Service was good. Ambiance is casual. That's all I got on this one. 'Til next time, cheers!

First time dining in at Max's Restaurant and my family and I came in hungry. We ordered the family meal which came with an order of a whole sized chicken (fried of course), kare-kare, your choice of pancit (we chose bihon), crispy pata. All that was about $100 and for an additional $25, you can get the pork sinigang and halo-halo. Like I said we came hungry so opted for the add-on. Everything was great, felt like I was at my Tita's house for dinner. I haven't had crispy pata in long time so that was a nice little treat. For those that do not know what that it, it's a giant portion of pork deep fried with the skin in tact so it was extra crunchy! The chicken is also good which was deep fried. I love my chicken crunchy. It's seasoned well - my only complaint is that the dark parts of the chicken were a little over cooked where the meat was a little bit dry. The white meat was still nice and tender though. The sinigang and kare kare were good - no complaints there. Halo halo dessert looked beautiful. I'm allergic to red dye so I couldn't fully indulge like I wanted to but the ube ice cream on it was delish! Overall, Max's is a great restaurant to come if you're looking for authentic Filipino cuisine. It's super popular in the homeland, so I am glad they made their home here in Chicago!

This place is so good! I thought the sinigang was a little bland for my own liking, but the crispy pata and halo halo were absolutely delicious! I would recommend coming here and also just to have the nostalgia of eating Filipino food.

We ordered kare kare, patatim, Max's chicken, sinigang na baboy, and halo-halo. The service was fast and efficient, but our server wasn't friendly. They didn't check on our table or ask if we needed anything. One other server, who wasn't assigned to our table, came by to see if we needed anything. The ambiance was family-friendly. However, the kare kare tasted watered down.

Went there for lunch on a Sunday. Lots of parking since located in a strategic area of large strip mall lined with Filipino stores, There were many customers but it was not too busy. Wait staff need to be more attentive though; check on its customers, refill water, and provide more napkins. Satisfied my craving for Filipino comfort food. Majority of the dishes we ordered was perfectly seasoned except the BBQ Pork, which was on the sweeter side . Max chicken and Chicharron Bulaklak so crispy!! Will definitely come back!!

I love Filipino food and while visiting Chicago our friend took us to Max's and it was so good but sooooo much food! I tried fresh lumpia for the first time, had amazing crispy pata with atchara that was my favorite! The kare-kare was very rich and the fermented shrimp paste helped cut the richness. If the sauce. Perfect finish was the ginormous halo-halo. Highly recommend the bundle, but bring a lot of people. We had so much food., we could have feed four more people.

We had an absolute feast when we visited Max's Restaurant Bring your appetite. The drinks will transport you to the tropics. For our drinks, we had the Mango and Calamansi (Philippine Lime). These were actually like slushies, the Calamansi was citrusy but sweet. Both were very refreshing and delicious. We started with the Calamari appetizer, which was fresh, tasty, and more than enough for two. We then ordered the Fiesta Platter (available on weekdays and dine in only). We couldn't believe our eyes at the size of it. It easily feeds 4 or 5. The Fiesta Platter consists of: Crispy Pata Chicken Inasal Inihaw Na Liempo Lumpiang Shanghai Daing Na Bangus Grilled Eggplant Pancit Bihon Garlic Rice Everything is cooked well done and crispy. Just the way we like it. For dessert, we ordered the Halo-Halo, which consists of: Macapuno (Coconut meat) Milk Gulaman (gelatin) Beans Shaved Ice Ube Paste Leche Flan Ube Ice Cream Rice Crispies Jack Fruit Banana You mix up or shake the ingredients before digging in. Such a delicious end to our meal. This could easily feed four as well. Service from our waitress, Jeanna, was excellent. They are right next to Seafood City, so there is plenty of parking. Enjoy a memorable feast of Philipino food at Max's Restaurant

We recently visited Max's Restaurant in Chicago Come hungry. Allow your taste buds to be transported to an exotic land where food is plenty and shared with friends and family To drink, we had the Mango and Calamansi (Philippine Lime). More like slushies, the Calamansi is a traditional Filipino drink and was really delicious We had the Calamari appetizer, large enough for two, it was fresh and tasty. We split the Fiesta Platter (available on weekdays and dine in only). It is huge! Can easily feed 4 or 5 people. It includes the following: Crispy Pata Chicken Inasal Inihaw Na Liempo Lumpiang Shanghai Daing Na Bangus Grilled Eggplant Pancit Bihon Garlic Rice The food was crispy and well done. Make sure to leave room for the Halo-Halo dessert. Don't forget to mix up the ingredients to combine all the flavors. Plenty of parking, the restaurant is right next to the Seafood City Marketplace Really enjoyed some delicious Filipino food at Max's Restaurant on Elston

    Pancit Canton
    Yining D.

Delicious Filipino food for a very affordable price. My bf and I shared the half fried chicken, a bbq pork skewer, garlic rice, and the pancit canton. Everything was freshly prepared and we savored every bite. The bbq pork skewer was tender and flavorful and went perfectly with the garlic rice. The skin on the fried chicken was perfectly crispy, and the chicken was juicy and tender. The fries weren't that crispy but they went really well with the banana ketchup which was a unique condiment to try. I loved the pancit canton as well. It was full of vegetables and seafood pieces. I will definitely be back to try the other menu items. Service was prompt and efficient. We did have to wait a bit for the food, but drinks came out quickly. We came here for lunch on a Sunday around 12:30 pm and had to wait for 15 minutes before they sat us. The restaurant has plenty of seating with a lot of booth style dining or tables to sit 4-6 people. Definitely give them a visit next time you're near seafood city.

The food from Max's was actually pretty good Filipino food, as my standards are high as my mom is a great cook. Where I give it 3 stars is for portion & price. I took a picture of the Lechon sisig... but for $24 for that portion in the small box, that's a rip off. Like I said, food was great, just not sure it's worth the prices they're charging.

    Fresh Lumpia
    Char I.

It is a famous Filipino restaurant, taste here is a little bland than in the Philippines. We had the combo w/ chicken, crispy pata, shanghai, canton, chopseoy. It is good for 4-5 people and really filling. Crispy pata's skin was so crunchy but has a pork smell (bad), the rest were okay but being a Filipino and knowing the food it was okay but not great. The server was nice and the ambiance is a typical pinoy restaurant... plain. I would suggest you try our favorite Lumpia Fresh they make it good. Overall, place to eat if you want pinoy food restaurant style.

We definitely had to take some home for later and I would do it again, but get even more! The black sesame and ube coconut cold brews were definitely a great way to start. These were perfectly sweetened drinks that hit the spot and satisfied our tummies while we waited for the main events. I would order both again without hesitation. Yum! Ube huckleberry Basque cake - if you're familiar with the Spanish almond tortes, it was very much like that. Crispy outside and dense cake-like inside. The huckleberry balanced out the sweetness of the ube jam. Very nice! Black truffle croissant, one of the best pastries I've had. Filled with Delice de Bourgogne cheese (my fave) and topped with shaved truffles and rock sugar. A very nice play between sweet and savory...but $16! For me, worth the splurge, 100%! Ube coconut ensaymada. I don't care for ensaymada but had to try this one. It's filled with an ube cream and the big difference is that this had a nice crispy crust, soft inside, and no sugary butter "frosting" (which I don't like in a traditional version). Definitely good but I don't have to have it again. Breakfast sandwich with cheddar cheese, soufflé egg, longaniza, and crispy hash brown between a soft sandwich bun. No sauces needed, the flavors stand out themselves. We need to make this at home, guys. One of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had. The hash brown adds some nice crisp to what would otherwise be a soft sandwich. If I did it at home I'd skip the hash brown and just crisp up the buns on a fry pan to save some calories, lol. Tocino and longaniza--Perfectly fried egg over garlic fried rice with tocino and longanisa, served with pickled green papaya and garnished with cilantro, mint, and green onion. Leveled up for sure with a higher cut of pork for the tocino, but the longanisa didn't impress at all. It was not packed with the full flavor of a good sweet, tart and spicy longanisa that I know. It was more tame and westernized which I think didn't do justice to Filipino cuisine. Albeit, I will say that I didn't have that longaniza after effect that longaniza eaters know too well-- you know what I mean! Ok, last but not least -- chicken adobo. Had to have this and so glad I did. This was my favorite dish and I'm going to bring some of what I've learned back to the home kitchen. This is sliced chicken thigh. It looks like it was marinated and then grilled, topped with a nicely balanced adobo sauce and smothered with chicken skin palapa (scallion, ginger, toasted coconut), and a side of pickled green papaya. D-freakn-licious! This was definitely leveled up adobo!!! I regretted not having reservations for their fine dining experience during my short Chicago stay.

I arrived with my family and there is a sign at the entrance instructing guests to "please wait to be seated." Unfortunately, there was no host or hostess present at the front, so we stood waiting and tried to get the attention of the only visible staff member in the restaurant. He appeared to be working alone behind the bar counter and didn't notice us right away. This already created a slightly disorganized first impression. If a restaurant is going to require guests to wait to be seated, there really should be someone assigned to the front to greet and seat customers..... Once seated, the same gentleman brought us menus, but it took quite a while for him to come back and take our orders because he was handling multiple roles at once--taking orders, preparing drinks at the bar, and bringing out food. It honestly felt like he was doing the job of several people, which is not fair to him or the customers. On to the food: as someone who is Latina and familiar with both Cuban and Filipino cuisine (through family and community), I was surprised by the execution. Appetizers were served in very small portions-- only two or four pieces per order--such as the lumpia, which felt overpriced for measely two pieces. The pricing overall felt quite high for the portion sizes even with 4... Flavor-wise, the food leaned heavily toward a more Americanized interpretation. The ropa vieja lacked depth and seasoning compared to what I'm accustomed to, and the pancit bihon tasted closer to a salty chow mein-style stir fry rather than the traditional dish...even the noodles used were very different It didn't reflect the authentic balance of flavors associated with Filipino cuisine... Overall, while I appreciate the concept and understand the challenges of running a restaurant, the execution felt inconsistent. Between staffing limitations, high prices, and food that didn't fully reflect the authenticity of either cuisine, the experience fell short for me and my family.

Dark moody lighting with warm colored lamps really sets the tone for the meal you are about to eat. Service was incredibly kind and attentive. Everyone's so lovely. The food is exactly what you'd expect - elevated Filipino and overall INCREDIBLE. Here's what we got/my thoughts. Coco ginger daiquiri - 5/5 - really refreshing. You could taste each component of the drink which was fun to experience. Sisig - 4/5 - I'll start by saying I'm really particular about my sisig. For sisig to be a 5 for me, it *has* to be crunchy. And that's the only thing this sisig was missing. For coming out on a sizzling plate, it was a little too wet, even after the sizzling. Despite this though, the flavors were there and they were delicious. Garlic rice - 5/5 - best garlic rice I've ever had in my life. Just get it. That's all I have to say. Pancit canton - 4/5 - if I'm being honest, it's hard to really elevate pancit canton. But this was a good attempt, it just seemed to be missing something to put it over the top. Really appreciated the fresh vegetables with the noodles. Lumpia - 5/5 - like pancit canton, it seems hard to elevate lumpia but they freaking did it. This was so good. The filling was nice and juicy and had great flavor. Kare Kare - 5/5 - Kare Kare was my favorite dish growing up but I've never experienced it elevated to such a high level until boonies. The meat was so tender, cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. The vegetables being carmelized was also quite the treat. Didn't realize until after the fact that the sauce isn't made with peanuts, so huge plus that gives our peanut allergic friends the opportunity to experience such an amazing dish. So well done.

I especially appreciated that there were a lot of vegetarian options which is hard to find in Filipino food, like our "veggie" lumpia usually has small bits of meat in it, lol. We were warmly welcomed, seated relatively quickly, and the service was attentive and timely. The place is cozy and on the dark side so my pics aren't the greatest. We had the Inihaw ng Talong which is basically grilled eggplant that came brushed with sunflower butter, loaded with tomatoes and garnished with cilantro. This was a nice start but a small one. The eggplant was smoky and creamy and complimented by the bright tomatoes. The Satti Manok, skewered grilled chicken, with cornbread sticky rice was good, but I've definitely had better for a lot less. This is usually a staple you'll find at any Filipino family's BBQ but the cornbread sticky rice was a surprisingly nice treat. If you've had this before, somewhere else, I'd skip it to try something else. The Sinigang Caesar was such a nice twist that totally made sense! My only complaint is that it was served with Bibb lettuce instead of a crunchy romaine. I enjoyed this so much I've been making my Caesar dressings with a sprinkling of Sinigang powder now and my family loves it. The Kare Kare gulay was nice and I enjoyed it. The charred cabbage gave it some extra depth that I think is needed to pull this off because this sauce is made with sunflower butter instead of peanut butter. This was great for me because I'm allergic to peanuts but it definitely changes the flavor, making it a little sweeter and lighter. I wish they would've made this with cashew or almond butter to keep it closer to the rich, deep flavors of a Kare Kare. The Maitake mushrooms -- I absolutely loved. I've never had this before and it reminded me of a good Laing which is also made with a spiced coconut sauce. I definitely could've eaten this all to myself with the garlic rice. Yes, the garlic rice is good but I was surprised to see it go for $6 a bowl. Rice is usually so cheap, if not complementary in Filipino restaurants and garlic rice is quite common, especially for breakfast (yes, I sabreakfast). It was cooked perfectly though. The mango float was delicious. Not sure why it's called a float but it was mango and mascarpone ice cream nestled in a mango sauce and topped with a delicate, crumbly butter cookie. I will definitely come back for more if I'm ever in the area again. I'd be excited to try other things on their menu.

We've said to ourselves over and over, we have to try Kubo! We finally decided to go in for lunch on a cold Sunday (3/22) and we had the most wonderful meal. The space was clean, welcoming, and lively with other diners. There's plenty of seating and although I usually highly dislike high top seating, their bar seating was incredibly comfortable. We ordered the chicken eggrolls and two orders of the chicken adobo. All of our food came out very fast, and we had very attentive service. March Madness is currently going on and was playing in the restaurant. We are basketball fans so this was a plus, and we were asked if the game that was currently on was our preferred game to watch, which was very thoughtful. The food was incredible. The eggrolls were incredibly flavorful and the chicken in the chicken adobo fell off the bone easily. The sauce on the chicken was delicious and it mixed so well with the garlic rice. We cannot wait to bring friends and family to this restaurant in the future. The hot food made us feel so whole on a cold and extremely windy day. In the summer, I cannot wait to sit on their spacious, covered patio. Thank you Kubo for a wonderful experience!

We had the chicken lumpia, first which were long not like the normal finger length I'm used to. Lots of tender meat inside. Wow. Then had the lechon kawaii, deep fried sea bass and the pancit with rice noodles. We were knocked out by the presentation of the sea bass. OMG it was perfectly crispy, The flavors were clean and fresh. Definitely a must order. The pork belly was also perfectly cooked. The pancit loaded with chicken and veggies. This is a must return place. THe inside was cozy and not noisy. We could talk without shouting.

Highly recommend! Delicious food, great place for brunch!…read moreKid friendly - they have high chairs and diaper pail in the women's restroom with changing table. Lots of sweet and savory items to choose from. Limited vegetarian options but the cebu egg sandwich and sizzling tofu were delicious. Got the ube French toast for the table, definitely shareable and so moist and delicious. Has small boba and crispies for a crunch. Also ordered the tamarind fries with Ada boom sauce. Fries were nice and crispy and sauce was a creamy ketchup aioli type. Kids got mini pancakes which came with a yummy ube syrup Also enjoyed ube tiramisu latte , so pretty and delicious.

Accompanied with shrimp crackers, this was probably the highlight of the meal. We had the burger and seafood noodles for the main course. The fries that came with the burger were really unusual and cooked really well. However the seafood noodles left much to be desired. For one, the seafood was not fresh. The mussels had a funny taste and the shrimp tasted of metal. The dish was overpowered with a mountain of noodles. I did ask for less noodles when I ordered the meal and got told everything was prepacked before cooking which should have rung alarm bells but I really wanted something fairly authentic: I should have gotten the burger. Service was fine but very sporadic and after the main dishes were served no one came to check everything was ok until we were done and they were cleaning away the plates.

My favorite Filipino breakfast spot in Chicago!!…read more Taste of Philippines is a no frills spot where you can order at the counter and dine in. I find the all the dishes I've tried are perfectly balanced in flavor, my favorite being the lechon kawali. Other honorable mentions go to the frankenstein cookie (half ube, pandan), the pandan cold brew, and the breakfast combo plate. On my latest visit, I was able to meet Chef Kathy who was extremely kind and cultivated such a warm environment where all her guests were also community. It's the kind of place you want to come back to not just for the food but the people there. Give this place a try, you'll love it!

But the moment we walked in, we felt like we were bothering the staff. We walked up to the register and she asked us what we wanted. When we asked a question about the menu she restated the menu name saying that what it is. We started ordering and she kept aggressively asking is that all you want? And we just rushed and ordered and sat down. We ordered the lumpia, the breakfast sandwich, and the pork belly with garlic rice. We also ordered a pandan cold brew and a ube cold brew. For dessert I got an ube cookie. The lumpia came out almost immediately, but was super super salty. I took one bite and couldn't finish it even with the sweet chili sauce but my husband kept eating at it. Our entrees came out shortly after the sandwich was good, and the pork belly was crispy. It was a great size portion. We waited to eat our food until we got our drinks, which came out quite a bit later after we got our food. The drinks were great and full of flavor. After we finished our meal, we went to the counter to find someone to ask for our cookie because we hadn't received and we were the only ones In the restaurant. It took a while until someone came out, so we rang the bell. She gave us our cookie after checking we never got it. So we took it to go. Overall the food was exactly what it was listed as, but I don't know I'll come back to the brick and mortar maybe just support them at various pop up markets.
