It was a nice day out, so I took a quick 5 minute walk to Max and Lucy's. Been meaning to check them out for a while, as I heard nothing but great things. I ordered the breakfast bento, for which you have starch and protein choices, and a side of the fried chicken so many told me about. I was extremely happy with both. Great way to start a day. Service was fast and friendly. Parking didn't look to busy, and it's a really short walk from anywhere in kakaako or downtown. Check them out if you haven't yet. Entree prices range from $7-$12 and are massively portioned. They have mini portions also, but there's nothing "mini" about them. Be ready for a kanaka attack (as if staying awake at work isn't hard enough ). Although Max & Lucy's doesn't have parking, you can usually find metered parking around the area. Located right next to New Wave Kitchen in a stand alone building, you could miss it if you blink! I heard they had great fried chicken, and the best lemon bars.. I call Mike the owner to see if I could get a bucket/barrel of fried chicken at 8:30am. He graciously agreed to have accommodate my unusual request. I also ordered a full tray of lemon bars, and 6 banana chocolate chip muffins, some coffee cakes. The chicken was excellent.... large thighs with super crispy skin, and juicy. Great hot, and even cold. The lemon bars were amazing too. LOCATION: right next to the Hawaii State Federal Credit Union, near Circuit Court and a block away from the Federal Building. AMBIANCE: it's not air conditioned well, so do not wear a sweater! It's casual, cafeteria style, so you go to the counter, order your food, and proceed to the cashier. There are tables inside and outside. The cute children's artwork is neatly displayed along the walls. FOOD: choose from the Daily specials or the Weekly specials. Today's weekly special was prime rib which my lunch buddy chose, while I ordered the Salmon Katsu. Unfortunately, they had run out of the Salmon, so I was offered the last piece of Opakapaka Katsu - YUM! Both the prime rib and my fish where excellent and come with 2 scoops of rice and a tossed green salad! My lunch buddy kept saying, "This is so good!" I was silent since my mouth was constantly full! Max and Lucy's how I luv thee. Just stopped in the other day cause I was craving some of those delicious baked chicken, my go to entree when I am not feeling too adventurous. Max and Lucy's pops, the chef in the house, makes his chicken to perfection...baked chicken, teri chicken, even fried chicken. There are many other delicious entrees. Some of my other go to dishes include the opakapaka, the loaded stuffed baked potato, the meatloaf. Regrettably, Mike also bakes the most delicious desserts so, I have to make sure I am with strong resolve when I walk in otherwise a pumpkin cream cheese muffin or a banana with chocolate muffin or lemon bar might just drop right into my takeout package, magically. read more

Prime Rib at an affordable price near Downtown? I'm there! I came here with my lunch buddy after sorting through our list of places we wanted to try. It was just by pure coincidence that we picked Thursday and prime rib was one of the specials for the day. I absolutely love prime rib, who doesn't? It's like the best thing at weddings next to crab legs! When you walk into this restaurant, you'll notice that people are in line. That's good for two reasons, one is that you can take time to decide what to order and the second is that places with lines are usually places with good food! Once I saw prime rib, I already knew what I was going to order. As we were waiting for our turn, I checked in and got a free soda offer! Make sure to check in! As the anticipation grew, it was finally our turn. After I ordered, Mike (the owner) walks back to the kitchen area and starts slicing some juicy prime rib. He brings it out cut in strips so it's so much easier to eat. The plate was quite heavy with everything in it. The prime rib to me was perfect because it was medium rare and more on the rare side. We enjoyed our meal and talk about FOOD COMA! It was so filling with all the rice, salad, prime rib and free soda. You definitely get great bang for your buck here. It was so good that we decided to come back the following Thursday and invite some of our other Yelp friends. Our second visit there was also very filling and delicious. This time I ordered the fried chicken. It was full of flavor and very juicy. I saw so many pictures of people ordering it that I had to try. Both plates I ordered are good but I personally like the prime rib better. Come to find out that Mike changes the recipe weekly on the prime rib. How did I not know about this amazing place? Max & Lucy's have been in business since May 3, 2009. I only recently found out about this place a few weeks ago, by word of mouth. Since then, I've been back several times and always for their salmon katsu. Service: Mike (the owner) works super hard! He is quick and super duper nice! It's always a pleasure when he takes my order. It gets super busy in here, but the line moves pretty quick. The food is worth waiting in that line for. Plus, like I said, he is quick and the line moves fast :) Parking: There are lots of metered parking on the street, most of his customers walk in from the nearby businesses. I sometimes park in the lot next door (illegally) .... Pick up and go. If you plan to eat there, I highly recommend using the metered stalls. Food: AMAZE-balls!!!!!! So far, I'm stuck on their salmon katsu. I've had it with their tartar sauce or with gravy on top. Either way, both were delicious!! My friends have tried their roast pork, fried chicken, baked chicken and prime rib and devoured their entire plate. I haven't tried their famous lemon bars yet because they are always sold out when I get there. So one of these days, I'll have to come early and get them. After "liking" Max & Lucy on Facebook, I can now see their specials posted daily. I was very thrilled to see orange and cranberry scones so I made some time to drive here Monday morning between appointments. As I parked my car I saw the owner and was surprised he remembered who I was (the guy asking for scones). Very impressed. I walked in to find their baked goodies and ended up trying their orange cranberry scone. OMG!!! This was really, really good. The texture was perfect - not dry or too spongy like a cake or muffin and was not that sweet. The cranberries were sweet and tart with a slight hint of orange. Personally, I would have liked a little more orange zest for that kick. And I am definitely a fan of the lemon bars here for sure. Make sure to get some when you stop by here. Before leaving, I was encouraged to try their carrot cake, where I am not really a fan. To be honest, I pretty much ONLY like the cream cheese frosting on the top but the cake was quite yummy. Nice and moist. I was bummed I didn't get to try their chicken fried steak, which is served every Monday's. Next week is President's Day so I guess I'll have to wait another week and should I be available for lunch, for sure I'll be back to sample their plate lunches. A lot of Yeeps like this place. For me, it was ok. It wasn't bad or anything, it just wasn't tantalizing. It might have to do with what I ordered, the shoyu chicken. It wasn't flavored enough. It probably needed to be marinated longer. The outside of the chicken was brown, however, the inside part was white. I like my shoyu chicken to be marinated brown on the inside as well. I've had better at other spots. Some of the other people I came with got the salmon katsu and they loved it. I will have to go back and try it. Another item here that people rave about are the lemon bars. They always sell out, so it's best to call in advance to have them hold a piece for you. The prices at this place are very reasonable. My chicken plate was $8 for 3 pieces of chicken, rice and mac salad. If you check in with Yelp, you also get a free canned drink. I believe the owner is Mike. He's a very nice guy. Today, I brought Mog P. with me. Her first time. She's a little under pressure at the moment so I thought this will help bring her down a bit so she can work. Plus, I really wanted to try that lemon bar. As I'm walking out of the car from the parking lot, Mike had just pulled in and came out too. I turned around and asked him if he had the lemon mars this time. I got an affirmative YES with that. We in business now. We ordered the Salmon Katsu that everyone is talking about especially Jozlyn H. We ordered it with the tartar sauce. However, Mike was kind enough to give us the katsu all warmed up. I also get 2 bars, FINALLY, and a drink. We decide to eat it there although Mog P. feels she should go and eat in the car. We sit down and I open it up to look at the contents. The tuna salad, the 2 scoops of brown rice all beneath one big slab of nicely cooked salmon. Tearing a piece of salmon, I see the juices and feel the softness. The outside crust is crunchy stiff while the inside is soft and moist. My goodness it is do delicious. With the warmed katsu sauce it was truly wonderful. We ended up using that the whole time. Mike came around to see how we were doing and asked how we liked the katsu sauce. I showed him the sauces we had except the katsu was empty "What do you think". Point well made. A truly wonderful dish that Mog P. and I could share together. Now, the lemom bar is good. Very good. But, I would describe it more of a lemon shortbread cookie. i was actually more impressed with the lemon blueberry pound cake. Moist and the flavors went so well together. Another slice of heaven. Holy moly that was really good. I highly recommend this place to one and all. It's a hole in the wall serving up some delicious food at more than fair price. Loved this place...I really want to go back to try the egg plant lasagne.....the owner was really nice. I arrived too early for lunch but he went ahead and fried up a few opakapaka while I waited. As I mentioned in my tips, the Yelp check-in gave me a drink, but since I didn't want soda, I opted for orange juice and they credited me for the drink and I just paid the difference. It was nice of them to do that. People are really nice, selection is great! I can't wait to go back! 10/16/15 Finally got back. Today I got to try the salmon katsu. What I live is he is using the New Zealand farm raised king salmon. In my humble opinion this is the best salmon I can get locally at a reasonable price. Max and Lucy's is a mom and pop takeout spot in the District Court area on Halekuwila Street, featuring coffee drinks, baked goods, regular menu items, and specials of the day. The Owner and staff are friendly and accomodating, and move the line quickly. You can snag an indoor or outdoor table or take your meal to go. Max and Lucy's does a good job with the local favorites--Fried Chicken, Meatloaf, anything with gravy. If you are lucky enough to go on a day they have Ahi Katsu or Teri Salmon, get it, their fish is tender, not dry, and tasty. Prime Rib is another treat not to miss. Plates come with choice of white or brown rice and choice of mac or toss salad (get the lilikoi dressing!), are good sized for the price, and better than average in quality. Also, don't pass up the baked goods and coffee. The Muffins are hearty and loaded with blueberries or bananas, chocolate chips and walnuts. The Blueberry-Peach Crumble is lighter, like a coffee cake. They also have danishes that can be reheated in a toaster oven for an afternoon snack. Definitely check them out if you are in the area. Max & Lucy's is sort of a hole in the wall place. My friends brought me to this place for a quick bite to eat. One got the Salmon while I got the fried chicken with the potato salad and gravy over the chicken. I was anticipating decent fried chicken and salad but wow I was surprised with delight. The fried chicken was crispy and yet juicy. The flavors was too delicious that I actually ate the skin and polished all of the meat. The mushroom brown gravy really added a pop to the flavor of the already delicious chicken. The potato salad I think was mixed with Dijon mustard and mustard balls. I ate it so fast I forgot to take a picture of it. I also had a small sample of my friend's salmon and WOW!!! Tender, not over cooked and full with bold flavor!! It's a must go. The cook/owner is really friendly and offers you things that may not be on the menu. Also if you have a hard time making a decision he is more than willing to help you decide. Daymmmmm...there's just SOMETHING about the baked chicken that keeps me coming back. I swear it's juuuust baked chicken but it's unbelievably tender, moist, and tasty! I tried making it at home but just not the same. It's seasoned juuust right, and consistently cooked to perfection. If you're lucky enough to find it, the apple cake is BOMB! Have been eating here since I started working around the Punchbowl Street area for more than 5+ years and it's very surprising I haven't wrote a review about this place. Food here is not bad, fresh, and menu specials are served each day of the work week. The food (lunch) is already prepared and all you have to do is order your entree (mix plate option available) want plus sides (White/brown rice, salad, Mac and Cheese, Tuna Mac, Regular Mac, Pasta). Price for food used to be $7.50-$8 for daily menu items until inflation and it's now $9+ (can't help it) but quality didn't change for the most part. My favorites I would recommend to order here would be the baked (flavored, moist restaurant style) /fried chicken (juicy and crispy), meat loaf (huge slice for regular plate), roast pork, panko fried salmon, prime rib, and it's lemon dessert bars. The food is delicious here and filling but sometimes they run out of certain foods which you'll need to compromise. This place also serves breakfast and are good/price reasonably. It's too bad I don't wake up early to stop by to eat before work. Although there is limited parking, this place is convenient for take outs since the food is ready to serve during long lines during the lunch rush. There are few dining tables inside and a few dining tables outside. Service is not bad and really thought the owner's kids were awesome at helping out. This place beats the cafe inside the federal building and alternative if you don't feel comfortable buying food from food trucks in front of the Hawaii tax/labor building. This is a great place to get some breakfast before you need to start your day. Only two men work here in the morning, but they are always friendly. One takes your food order and the other is the cashier/barista. I always order their breakfast bento. $3.50 for one scoop of rice (white or fried rice), one egg (cooked when you order), and one meat. They usually have little smokies, bacon, portugese sausage, and other types of sausage to choose from. They also have baked and fried chicken. Little smokies will always be my choice if it's available. The fried chicken is wonderful!!! The skin is crispy and the meat tender and flavorful!!! If you need a caffeine boost in the morning, they also serve Tully's coffee. They brew your coffee to order so I have not had a burnt tasting coffee yet. Of course they do have the flavors like hazelnut, vanilla, etc if you don't drink your coffee plain. There is also an array of pastries that you can order if that's your fancy. My dad and I came here this morning for an early breakfast as I was servicing my car for maintenance near by. Service: 5/5 When we walked in, the first thing we hear is a "good morning" and the guy was really helpful and nice to us as we figured out what we wanted. This isn't going to be your fancy hipster looking brunch place you'll see on ig, but a lowkey, affordable, family style breakfast shop. My dad wanted to get a mixed fruit drink but they only had mango so he went with that. This place had been on my "must try" list for ages, after reading the reviews of my Yeeps Mel B, Nadine C, Daniel C, Lyn L, Amy M, and so many others...so when I found out that Thursdays are "Prime Rib Day," I just had to jump in my car & go! Based on other reviews, I go very early (10:30-11:00) to avoid the rush, & so far I've been lucky to get parking right out front, 4 times out of 4! And no line. From the outside, you'd never guess that this little hole in the wall place turns out some of the best prime rib on the island...& I've had my fair share of prime rib! Always super tender, moist but not bloody, lightly seasoned so that the "meat flavor" really shines, & cut into large succulent cubes of yumminess...you really can't go wrong with the prime rib here. At $12.50 per plate, it's a good-size portion for the money, and comes with white or brown rice, and mac or tossed salad. I'd recommend the toss with lilikoi dressing, for a nice contrast to the prime rib. Be sure to make the most of the flavorful (but never salty!) au jus that comes with every prime rib plate. Not only do I dunk my meat in there, but I also pour it over my rice...& I might or might not have been known to drink the leftovers straight out of the bowl. Keep in mind, if you like a lot of fat on your prime rib (like my mom), or you like it bloody & still moo-ing (I usually reserve that for my steaks, lol), this might not be the prime rib for you. But if that's the case, I'd recommend their fried chicken, which is nice & crispy/crunchy without being overly battered, and is very tasty but still "tastes like chicken" (as opposed to a ton of herbs/spices). Heck, I got the prime rib plate & added a piece of fried chicken on top of that, bc it's so good! I'd also highly recommend the salmon katsu...omg!! I normally avoid cooked salmon, bc it's almost always overcooked for my taste. But I'm glad I took a chance here, bc the salmon katsu is AMAZING! Barely cooked (that's a very good thing), so it's beautifully moist and light inside, with a perfectly crisp panko coating...there's no way you could find fault with this nice large cut of fresh, flavorful salmon. I hardly even use the tonkatsu sauce (I'm kind of a purist like that), but the sauce is yummy too! When you get there, be sure to look for the owner, Mike (Max & Lucy are his kids), who's been there every time I've gone so far. He truly seems to appreciate his customers & enjoys being there, and it shows in the food and the homey feeling in his shop. When I asked him about catering, he said they do it as often as possible, & had just done a small buffet for 100 people the day before. I can't guarantee my memory on this, but I think he said they did salmon katsu (omg, soooooo goooood!!), teri chicken, fancy salad (with miscellaneous veggies like bell peppers, etc), roasted potatoes, brownies & lemon bars for $11 a head. The service is just as valuable & personal, Mike really makes you feel welcomed even if it's just your second time. This place is alway spur of the moment when I'm in this area passing through. The food here is alway good and always hot regardless of what you order. When I say hot, I mean hot. You better have something on your hand walking out or you'll drop your plate. Fork and knife with napkins help and support the plate because it's kinda flimsy. The roast pork and meatloaf was excellent today. Tossed greens with rice and gravy all over. Cannot go wrong with this combo. Beef stew meat is nice and soft. Fried Chicken on the side is another perfect combo. If you have a sweet tooth, there's lots of desserts on the counter to choose from. I make no exception unless they are sold out of lemon bars. This is my go to place for takeout breakfast and lunch. Everything I've tried here has been fresh, tasty, and filling. The pricing is average for plate lunches in town but that doesn't reflect in the quality. The quality of the food is fan-tastic! For breakfast, get the bento...egg done the way you want it...fried rice...and for me...bacon. The combination is perfect and it'll put you on the right foot with just enough carbs and protein to get your day started right. I'm a bacon lover (aren't we all?) and the bacon here gets a triple gold star. It's crispy, salty (but not too salty), fat that melts in your mouth before you chew...goodness. For lunch, my favorite, by far, is the roast pork. Yes...there's a theme here...I like eating pork...please don't judge me. Given my review of their bacon, it's pretty clear these guys take their pork seriously because, like how they've perfected their bacon, the roast pork is perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked, perfectly tender, and perfectly delicious! Don't shy away from the other items on the menu because they are all just as good. In fact, try the other menu items so the roast pork will be available when I go there to get my lunch! I have not been in Max & Lucy's but I hear many people raving about this place so when a coworker told me he was going, I asked him if he could buy me something from there. I wanted to eat something on the healthier side so I told him to get the salmon. On their menu (from what I saw on their Yelp pictures), there was three different ways to get the salmon. The guy buying my food, got it with pesto. The salmon was a decent size with pesto and cheese on top of it. It came with two scoops of rice and toss salad with 1000 island dressing. When I took that first bite of the salmon, all I could think of how delicious and soft the salmon was. It was not dry at all like most places cook their fish, and surprisingly, the fish was not fishy tasting, and not salty at all. The salmon was very fresh tasting. I wish I had had more! I would definitely go back and try the other items on the menu... the meatloaf with mushroom gravy looked good... too bad they never had on the day we got food. Bummers. read more

I went here to grab take out to go. Warning there's not much parking for this spot - it's metered street parking only. I ordered a mini beef stew plate to go which comes with rice and salad. If you come around 10am they already stopped serving breakfast but they won't have many lunch options available at this time. The menu is very extensive but there was only few menu options available at this time. Also I was bummed that lemon bars was out that day. The beef stew was not bad but I wasn't sold. Friendly staff and great local business otherwise so worth coming to support local. read more
