Terrible. This place has gone down hill in a big way. Service, waitress did everything she could to not come out of the kitchen. Food. Beyond Awful! Ordered an omelette. The entire bottom of the omelette was coated in pancake batter. We finally got waitress over and she started arguing that it was only burned (as if this would have been better), I assured her it was pancake batter. We had a horrible experience here last week. I ordered tea with milk, I was given a cup of tea with lemon. I reminded my waitress that I had requested milk, and by the time it reached the table, the tea was cold. I had to remind her for the water we had ordered as soon as we sat down. My friend ordered buffalo wings, she was given chicken wings with no buffalo sauce. They redid her order, and...she found a hair in her food. Our waitress was rude and asked us, "What do you want me to do about it?" when we pointed out a hair in our food. After we finished eating, we waited 20 min for our check, and had to flag down our waitress because she was nowhere near our table. After rolling her eyes at us, she said "Didn't I already leave the bill on the table?" Obviously no, since we're asking you for it. I've never had such poor service at a diner. This is my first time eating at this diner. I ordered a cup of chicken noodle soup and fried chicken. The noodles were very mushy. The soup flavor was okay. The fried chicken was good. The skin was crispy, the chicken was moist and had a sweetness to it. The French fries were generic ones. They could've fried those a bit longer. It was a good diner once.. but not anymore Usually I go there with my husband. This time I went with my mother for lunch. We ordered burgers. The service was okay. The salad bar was nothing much. It was very basic stuff. In any case, we got the burgers and you can smell the meat went bad. We called the waitress to let her know. A few minutes later the manager came over trying to convince us it did not go bad. It was fresh meat and they were fine. I understood where he was coming from but I kept telling him the smell was very clear to the point we did not want to order anything else made with ground beef. He kept insisting that it was fine. We got around ordering some kind cold cuts sandwiches to play it safe. After we received the new order. He came to check on us and AGAIN insist that the meat was fine. First, in a different restaurant/diner we would have received some discount or desert on the house or something.. NOT THERE. Second, his consistent attitude that we were wrong and the meat was just fine... irritated me to the point of no return. Mind you we live in Waldwick and we've been there so many time. We were not too crazy about the decor/ambiance to begin with (too senior citizen and that is most of their client tell) but the food was good to keep coming back. Had the basics eggs, hash browns they were so bland no flavor whatsoever even after we added the salt and pepper still had no flavor! Didn't get any better with the old stale sausage. I've eaten at Matthews quite often after Mass on Sunday over the years and I can say the food is not as good as it used to be. Lately the eggs are not cooked and the staff continually gets the orders wrong. Today was the limit when I asked for Oatmeal and was told there wasn't any on a Sunday morning. I didn't even get to look at the menu again the waiter expected me just order from memory. I'm very disappointed in this dinner. read more

Just sat down in the diner for breakfast, and was impressed with the decor and the cleanliness of the place. For a Jersey diner, was refreshing. Unfortunately, service was very lacking, as we were seated and then watched 2 other tables that came in after us get their orders, coffee, and food before our order was even taken. When our server did arrive, he did not apologize for the delay, stating he had to cover a room in the back and wasn't available. After our order was taken, the food came very quickly. Serviceable diner food without much fanfare, 2 eggs were slightly undercooked, hash browns were tasty. The cursing of the servers as well as acting like they are doing you a favor is something I have never seen. What is worse is the nickel and diming of their customers. Bad bad diner in a good location. Live in town and I don't understand why people would travel from anywhere else to go here. I've only been here a handful of times and each time I was disappointed. Double check your kids chicken fingers...they have a tendency to under cook them. Service is terrible. I asked to have my food wrapped and the waitress just walked past and threw an empty container on the table. Any time I've been there there has been no eye contact or thank you from the cashier up front and that even includes when the owner was standing there. Can a diner really be this bad??? yes! I have gone there two times and each time the meal was on the list of the worst I ever had in my life. There is nothing redeeming to say about the food. I had a corned beef sandwich that was cut into very thick hunks that was so tough I could not chew it. On another occasion I had dinner there and it was horrible. Ate here today with my son and had a mediocre breakfast. Our waitress came to take our drink order and when my son & I both ordered water she seemed annoyed. She asked if we needed a few more minutes to decide what we wanted to order. I said yes and she promptly disappeared. We decided what we wanted but our waitress was nowhere in sight. At about this time a gentleman dining a few tables away from us asked the host for his check. The host said he would get the man's waitress, who turned out to be our waitress. She gave him his check and without even looking at us went back into the kitchen. My son said he could see her standing in the kitchen talking to someone. Finally she came to take our order, my son ordered an omelette and I ordered pancakes with bacon & eggs. It took 12 minutes for our food to come out and when she put it on the table she said, "Oh they forgot your bacon". That took another couple of minutes. She came by once to see if we needed anything but when I could have used more water she was missing in action yet again. She came by and asked if we were done and when I said yes she gave us our check. My son said his omelette was full of spinach but very light on the feta cheese. My pancakes were just OK, nothing great just OK. When I went to pay the host/cashier asked if I wanted to add the tip to the bill. He NEVER asked us how our food was, if everything was OK, nothing. He also NEVER looked me in the eye which I thought was very strange. I have to add that the place was practically empty so it wasn't like the waitress was super busy, which might explain her behavior and lack of attentiveness. Also a couple came in right after we did and were seated next to us.
