Matsui is my go to place every time I eat at Mitsuwa. The prices are good and the portions are great! They offer curry rice dishes, udon and soba, as well as a variety of donburi. I always, always get the Ten Don Combo which comes with a small bowl of rice with tempura on top and sauce AND a bowl of udon or soba of your choice. Since I'm vegetarian, I always sub out the shrimp tempura with extra sweet potato tempura (they're always happy to do at no extra charge). And I always go with the hot soup udon (there is also the choice of having a dipping udon/soba). The tempura is fried fresh so it's always hot and crispy and the udon is delicious! The soup is not too salty, but still very flavorful. For the combo, it comes out to a little less than $9 which I think is pretty worth considering you get two different dishes. While there are a lot of options at the food court, I definitely recommend giving Matsui a try! All of their combo options are very worth the price you pay! read more

Seems like the ownership or something has changed since when it first opened. (Or was it just the name?) Tonkatsu Kaneda was actually fairly respectable. (Oh oops are those my rose-colored retrospection glasses?) They used to grind sesame seeds in front of you in their precious single-serving suribachi (mortar) with the surikogi (pestle) for the tonkatsu sauce. Solid good-ol' three star spot but sadly had to go. Matsui, on the other hand, just... offers less. The basic ingredients are there, but it lacks that special spark of a quality attempt. Even without comparing it to its predecessor, the flavors fall flat and the tonkotsu crunch can be borderline overdone/greasy. The curry tasted okay... but that doesn't say much, since I could get the same taste from my stash of Golden Curry at home. The tempura that came with udon was varied and generous enough, but the tempura coat was a far cry from artfully light and crispy. Thankfully the udon was alright and filled me up. If you've never been to Japan, please don't let this be your impression of "Japanese." Japanese people take food so so so seriously. The smallest of shops in even the most back-alley of places take their time and care in putting out quality. But of course, at least Matsui isn't cash-only anymore. Yay. Despite a few years in LA, I unfortunately never made it to the Matsui in Torrance, but even the Yelp photos show a huge contrast between the colorful vibrant food there and the bare shells of glory days past here. I only tried the plain udon noodles since I haven't had an appetite due to nausea and craved something light. It took a while to come out and honestly for like $7 it was a decent portion. It even came with free tea but it was just a gallon of cold water with some tea baths floating around lol. The udon was chewy and the broth was clear light dash I as I expected. This food stand where almost every dish has rice is selling rice bowls with no rice because they ran out. I don't know how this is possible when you exist in a grocery store with sacks of rice. Either the workers are too lazy to put rice in the rice cooker, or are too lazy to borrow a cup from the 4 other food stands with rice, or too lazy to buy some more sacks of rice sitting 5 second walk away in the grocery store. Most likely the cook washed the rice cooker because he wants to go home early, and is telling people they are out of rice. Ill bet the owner doesn't know, or is an incompetent. I got the assorted combo which came with pork, two pieces of shrimp and two pieces of oyster. It also came with rice, cabbage salad, some sort of pickled stuff, lemon slice, tomato wedge and miso soup. There is katsu sauce at the counter, as well as Japanese red pepper (love this stuff), sesame seeds and wasabi. They also give complimentary cold barley tea. I enjoyed the meal and probably enjoyed the shrimp and oyster more because the pork was a bit dry. The oyster was very good and didn't gross me out like some fried oysters from other places. The shrimp was perfectly cooked. I mixed the katsu sauce with some of the red pepper and sesame seeds to funk it up a bit. I like to sprinkle lemon as I go so it doesn't get soggy. The miso was pretty good but I wish it were hotter and had more tofu. The barley tea was okay. Service was quick. read more

I think Matsui has one of the best deals in Dallas. The amount of food you get for how much you pay is ridiculous. For under $9 before tip you can get a whole chicken katsu don AND a large bowl of udon soup. With the special combos you can decide wether you want cold or hot udon or soba noodles alongside your main entree. To be fair though the udon or soba if you get it could be a main entree in itself. They do not skimp out on the portions here. My mother and I decided to venture up to Plano to try another restaurant inside the food court but decided to try a variety of things instead. I am so glad we decided to order from Matsui. We got too greedy and got one of the special combos from here as well as another combo from another restaurant. Big mistake, but it was so worth it. I don't know if they just made the chicken katsu, but the breading was so crispy. The egg and cheese(?) on top was a great contrast in texture. Don't forget the tonkatsu sauce at the counter! It was delicious with the chicken katsu. The rice itself was very flavorful as well. The udon soup was perfect. The brought was light, the udon chewy, and the veggies perfectly blanched. This by itself is filling without feeling too greasy. Just a perfect foil for the chicken katsu don if your stomach was a bottomless pit. The food here reminds me of what my grandma cooked for me when I was growing up. Although I'm more white and Vietnamese now than Japanese, Japanese tradition (especially the food) was something that was ingrained in me since birth. Matsui took me back to my youth with this meal and I'm extremely grateful. I need to come back and try their cold soba before flying back to university after my summer vacation is over. This place used to be pretty good, but I think covid hit them pretty bad. The curry sauce tastes awfully similar to the store bought brand "Golden Curry". In the photo posted, the shrimp is so skinny, even my boyfriends finger is thicker than it. In the display it looks pretty thick, but it's so skinny. It was almost $5 for just 2 pieces of these little fingerlings. It was my first time at the Mitsuwa Plano location and I was super excited to have some Japanese food. I am a total fan of their food court! In our visit we got soba and chicken and egg bowl, and in another visit we got katsu curry. All items were very good and were served fast, fresh and in good portions. The only downside is that the pricing is a little higher than what I'm used to (around $12 a plate), especially compared to my hometown Mitsuwa location in CA (around $10 a plate), but still not super high for food court food. They also serve barley tea and a variety of condiments to add to your meal, including sesame seeds, red pepper, and hot mustard! I love hot mustard. Overall, I am a fan of this spot in the food court, especially because of the variety of Japanese food they offer as well as the quality. Enjoy! read more

This review is only for the pork katsu combo. The hubby and I make the drive up to Plano to eat here every now and then for lunch on weekends if we are craving tonkatsu. The tonkatsu is always nice and crispy and not too greasy. I'm not sure if it's the best quality pork, but it tastes pretty good for the price. Very affordable, quick, no frills meal. You also get a nice cabbage slaw with it that is pretty good and similar to what I've had in tonkatsu restaurants. They have your normal tonkatsu soy based sauce to help yourself to and free tea in the front. There is a lot of pretty good Korean katsu near the area we live in, but we come here when we want the Japanese version. The ambiance is obviously nothing to rave about as it's located in the Mitsuwa food court, but hey at least you can always get some grocery shopping done afterwards. read more

Worst service ever. I've only been to the food court at Mitsuwa 4 times and every time I've been there Matsui is not taking orders because they have too many orders. I've never seen this before at any restaurant. Food court wasn't even that busy. Seems like they can't handle more than 4-5 orders at a time and would rather lose business to the other restaurants that can handle orders. I wonder if the owner knows that they stop taking orders and is losing money because of it. read more
