Exceptional and gorgeous mid-century style restaurant in the Catskills, and one of the only ones open on a Wednesday evening! I've had the pleasure and privilege of dining at some of the most reputable establishments in NYC and LA, and this ranks in the top tier. The flavors were intricate yet subtle, and I loved that it was vegetable forward. My "Not a Negroni" was the best Negroni I've had, hands down. I wasn't sure how the Rum and Pineapple Amaro would work together, but they were exquisite compliments. The homemade sourdough and butter came out hot and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. It was hard to resist ordering more. A simple salad of lettuces, cucumber, cheese and light dressing blew my mind -- perfect for summer. I got the dauphine potatoes, which were like potato croquettes, and the addition of prosciutto made them a hearty and filling dish. The only miss for me were the desserts -- the flavor of the lemon tart was excellent but there was a jello-like encasing that seemed out of place and unnecessary. The mousse also had these strange jello-like pieces in the cream, which didn't really work for me. Next time, I would get the sundae. Our server, Amanda, was friendly and attentive without being overly watchful, and when she got busy, the host came over and helped us order drinks. Amazing and such a beautiful gem in upstate New York. We came here for a birthday dinner and would love to come again. A beautiful warm welcoming. Restaurant is located in a hotel. Ambiance and aesthetic is candlelit romantic. Food was so delicious. It is a small menu and I believe it might change depending on the season. For appetizers we ordered ends meat city ham & herb mustard and dauphhine potatoes. Those potatoes are a must order for sure ! But let's talk about the amish golden chicken, wow it was incredible so please order this dish if on the menu! It was cooked and it sauces to its perfection. The lentils with gouda were also delicious. Cocktails are a little strong and my favorite was the Tijuana turtleneck . The space is phenomenal and we came here for a birthday group of 6 and we enjoyed the ambiance a lot. That's probably my favorite thing of Matilda's I would definitely be going back for. We tried the prefixe menu and added on bread and tuna compote which were not a part of the prefixe. The bread was great and the tuna compote was lacking - I feel like it was just two crackers with tuna overpriced. The whiskey business was my favorite drink- it reminded me of the secret menu item, whiskey business from dear Irving, an amazing bar in nyc. They had interesting wines and they didn't have any open bottles for us to try so when we did buy a bottle it was much said that we would need to pay for it even if it would be bad so we just bought the bottle without having an option to try. Usually in fine dining restaurants you'd be able to try it regardless and see if you want the whole bottle. Prefixe time A few of us ordered the Wagyu steak and the Amish chicken (recommended by the staff). The only pescatarian who was also the birthday girl got the fish! The fish wasn't bad but had bones and was cold. One of our friends also had a cold chicken dish when mine was hot. We had a very interesting mix of temperatures going on as there was only one chef that night so some of our food turned out really cold which we did not expect. We brought it up to the waiter but nothing was done after we mentioned it so I feel like this definitely is not fine dining at all. We ended up heating up our Amish chicken over the candle and I feel like nobody really paid attention or cared that the food was cold. The Wagyu steak was over salted but I definitely think the Amish chicken was the best thing we got but it was not like worth the price point we paid. We also ordered dessert and I think that part tasted pretty good. Overall it's just ok. I feel like they could do better on service and their food temperatures. Their cocktails are great! read more

Wasn't wow-ed by the size of the menu, or the hospitality at greeting, but holy sht, things changed for the better as the meal progressed. The waitress, Teak (good luck with your surgery homegirl) turned out to be awesome. Every recommendation was perfect, I highly recommend the half deboned chicken and the lentils. Do not skip dessert. Order everything on the menu. One thing I didn't love was the fully dressed oysters with frozen toppings - I know it's a thing, just not my cup of tea. The best place you can eat dinner probably within at least a 50 mile radius, maybe even 100 miles. This is the restaurant in the brand new The Henson hotel in the Catskills, from chefs Jeremiah Stone and Fabian von hauske Valtierra of Wildair and Contra in NYC. It's a gorgeous dining room with a nice bar room and also lots of patio seating in the enormous backyard. The food is similar to what you would expect from their other restaurants, with some amazing new dishes like the Cannelloni. Of course get all of the desserts, including an incredible Strawberry granita and a great rendition of Chocolate Mousse with Hazelnuts. This restaurant is good enough of a draw to pick The Henson as a place to stay next time you're upstate. read more

The place is really nice inside. They did a great re-make. The bar menu is really limited as well as the dinner menu. I would like to go back but they have so few options it's not fun or interesting. Yes the food is good. I wish I could get the "full" menu at the bar. I like the fact that you see food you don't see anywhere else up here and it is quality and well prepared. What really bothers us is that you must order everything up front. This is really unacceptable. My wife and I like to order appetizers with appropriate wine and then see which way we are going. Yes I understand it's easier on the kitchen but comm on: you only have three entrees!!!!! The bartending couple that work there are knowledgeable and professional. The wine is not kept behind the bar bit strangely kept on a table outside the kitchen. Really awkward. That being said we would like to go back but will not due to the aforementioned reasons. Amazing food, service, and ambiance. Although some of the other customers were loud, it was at no fault of the restaurant and it is the best restaurant in the Catskills hands down. Such a hidden gem, it is located in a boutique hotel called the Henson. It is a very nice farm-to-table menu that boasts seasonal changes. The portions aren't the biggest but they were enough for my boyfriend and I (Both active, military) to feel full after a hard day of skiing. I appreciate their setting of table prior to each course, very classy and thoughtful. The server made great recommendations on the menu and helped us curate our meal based on our budget. The bar also looked cute and intimate. The French press coffee service at the end of the meal was also very cute and with beans from one of my favorite roasters. read more

We are in Windham for a long weekend getaway at a hotel nearby and came here during our first night and were blasted away by the richness of all of the flavors. The bread and butter is very special and so is the amish chicken with its super impressive hearty sauce. Cocktails are amazing, the dessert also (we had the sundae). From NYC's Wildair/Contra chefs Fabian von Hauske and Jeremiah Stone, Matilda is equally as delicious and creative and makes amazing use of the local ingredients. Highly recommend eating the full bar and main menu: tuna belly confit, dauphine potatoes, chickpea fritters, wagyu steak and all the desserts (especially the mousse). My wife and i ate at Matilda recently. The food is un Catskill like. It is extremely Manhattan. That is a good thing. Yes, some of the produce is from upstate New York but the cooking techniques used are from NYC, Europe, and Asia. This is not homestyle comfort food. My wife and i enjoyed our meal. Service was friendly and spot on. The wines by the glass went very well with the food menu. I enjoyed my Riesling very much. Unfortunately for personal reasons I had to cancel and called 3 hours before my scheduled reservation. I was charged $50 to cancel. This was no mentioned when making reservations. My friends and I recently dined at Matilda's it was exceptional. We started with perfectly sour sourdough and creamy butter that was so good I could've stopped there. The East Coast oysters were sweet and refreshing. Our second course featured light, crispy potato dauphin with prosciutto, and the freshest tomato salad I've ever had. The lentils in the third course had a nice sour kick, the arugula and trout roe, and the what we described as a deconstructed onion soup was so comforting and flavorful. For the main, we had steak and duck. The duck, notoriously tricky to get right, was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful--my favorite dish of the night. We ended with a rich chocolate mousse with hazelnut and a scoop of ice cream, both of which I highly recommend. Overall, a fantastic meal from start to finish. I Took my fiancé out for a romantic birthday dinner last night. I was a chef/owner at a cafe and an executive chef at a resort in the Catskills, so I rarely go out to eat because I can be hard to please. This restaurant delivered above and beyond! We will be back! We were seated next the fireplace and started with the Weiss Ferments Sourdough and house cultured butter. perfection. Crusty, crunchy-chewy with soft butter reminded me of my trip to Cahor. So good, we ordered a second round with our protein course! We then went on to have the Honeynut squash and Kyoto carrots dishes. The squash and carrot had just the right amount of chew. The brown butter and comte cheese sauce served with the squash took our taste buds on a nutty savory journey that was perfectly balanced by the sweetness of the squash. The carrots with smoked almonds, feta and Aleppo peppers forced us into a bread dipping battle, which I let him win this time, because it was his birthday... next time, the last dip is all me. For our Protein course we ordered the Highland Striploin and the Maine Scallops. I usually order my steak rare-med rare, but because we were sharing, I ordered it medium, as a compromise. The locally sourced steak was cooked to perfection! The Maine scallops were served with koshihikari rice. The short grain rice broke down into almost a congee and the pepitas offered the soft velvety dish a little crunch and texture. We finished with the chocolate mousse and were sent out their Matilda sundae on the house as a birthday surprise. This is by far the best meal I have had in the Catskills! The attention to detail and flavor profiles was obvious. Last but not least, the service was spot on. Attentive, intuitive, but not disruptive or over the top. Any questions we had about the menu were answered by our knowledgeable server, Amanda, who I highly recommend. Food was overall very good (not mind blowing but very good), but we found it to be very overpriced (even for NYC standards) and the service just awfully slow and not on par with prices charged. Food wise - we had grilled oysters (amazing), tuna belly (which was frankly really terrible, very fishy - but no one was there to check on us), dauphinois potatoes (which really were potato croquettes but very good), lettuces (which was basically just plain lettuce with a tasty dressing - nothing special but good), Japanese eggplant (very good), lentils (good but had to pick out the pork fat pieces) and steak (really good). Overall the food was great, although some portions were laughably small. For example the lentil dish at $18 was a very small plate (maybe 3-4 spoons). The salad was just a plain small place with plain lettuces (tasty dressing though). We don't normally eat a lot, we're not very hungry, shared 7 dishes and frankly were not very full at the end. Service was not great to put it mildly. Everything took FOREVER. For example my husband ordered a Negroni that took a good 40 minutes to come. And when it came out it was missing the sweet vermouth. No-one really checked on us to make sure the food was good and that everything was fine. The hostess was resetting our table and while doing so placed her tray on the table in front of me...which was not a big deal if i was at a diner or a very casual restaurant, except not on par with what this place is trying to be. It felt like they are trying to be this trendy and exclusive NYC restaurant, and the prices were up there but the service was just not there. Everyone was super nice but I just don't think they ever worked at a high end restaurant. If it wasn't for the service I would probably try this place again but at $300 before tax, this was not worth it. I find Silvia and Good moon in Woodstock much better. Service is not even comparable. Found this place a little underwhelming, and strongly disagree with food baby guy Mike C that it's the best restaurant in 100 miles. That distinction goes to Silvia in Woodstock. We found all of the apps mid at best. The east coast oysters are actually bad. The prawns are underwhelming. On the plus side, the drinks are executed beautifully and the chicken is exceptional. I'd probably give it 3.5 stars, but rounding up to 4 because I give respect to people trying to bring quality food and sophisticated ingredients to the mountains. Interesting to see so many positive reviews. We went last Spring (2024). There were four of us. We are familiar with previous establishments at this location and I will say that the renovations to the dinning area, out door space and the building in general was well conceived and built - it is quite impressive, knowing what was there before and it's the only reason I give it two stars. Having said that, the experience was terrible. I'm glad we got drinks before sitting down - we waited and waited. Got a server, ordered drinks, then waited and waited some more. They had run out of three out of the 5 main courses on the menu (I believe our reservation was for 7:30pm). One of the hostesses (maybe owner?) came to apologize and asked if she could do anything, to which we said "get us food! anything! how about some bread!" Yes, didn't even have bread for nearly an hour. By now were really hungry.It was well beyond an hour before we finally had food. When the food came, we were told that the plates were meant to be shared. The portions were insanely small, and some served cold, though it seemed that they probably would have been tasty if hot (it was a beef dish). The price tag here would have been north of $400, though ultimately, the meal was comped, though we did pay for the desert. We were still hungry after leaving, so we made some food when we got home. I'm glad others had a good experience, but considering how pricey it is to have such small portions, along with the disorganization, I have to say I'm reticent to return. read more

My wife and I ate at Matilda's recently after a round of golf at Thunderhart Golf Course, in Freehold, NY. Place looks beautiful inside and out, great job building and remodeling. We had two appetizers: The oysters were good, interestingly prepared. The prawns were served raw, not terrible however no notation on the menu or from the server. Two entrees: The duck was great and prepared excellently. The chicken was a real disappointment. Our waitress told us it was one the most prized selections on the limited menu, which would easily feed two people. The chicken was served pounded down to 1/2" and in our opinion didn't nearly live up to the hype. The potato side was filled with more turnups than potato. The green asparagus was tasty but tiny. Mixed drinks were very good. Couldn't read the desert men and little help was offered to do so. All in all, we would give this eating establishment the generous above rating. We play golf throughout upstate New York, and we eat out frequently. There are many very good restaurants in the surrounding area. A few are excellent. read more

The smoked trout was a bit too salty, but dipping it into the sauce made it delicious. The duck was perfectly cooked, though it could have used a bit more salt, even with the sauce, as it was a bit bland for my taste. The strawberries and potato dessert was absolutely delicious.
