We were invited by friends to come check out the Shelter at Woodstock. First off, when you're driving here, GPS has you turn into a driveway where there's a clothing store. Keep going...we were wondering if we were in the wrong place but the place is in the back! The vibes are warm, rustic, hunting cabin type with wood tables, wood stacked decoratively on the walls and antler type light fixtures. We sat at a table by the wood-fired oven and we loved it. That smoky wood fireplace smell We started with drinks, the guys ordered IPAs on tap...I went for the hot cider with a dash of bourbon. I found it light on the booze but I find that true most places. For an app, we shared a slice of toast topped with burrata. The thing was bigger than I thought. It was good. We decided to all order one of the specials, the short rib dinner with polenta and broccolini. Good Lord was it good. Huge short rib, delicious and tender, with a yummy Malbec Demi-glaze that was delicious. The rib sits on a big portion of polenta --seriously the best I've ever eaten. The broccolini was nice. I can see why they were running out of that dish for the night. Hubby ordered a mousse dessert that he enjoyed. I was too full to eat anymore. We stopped here for lunch while in the village. Immediately, we loved the decor upon entering. A mix of rustic and industrial. Hostess was welcoming and friendly. We ordered the Bee and Love pizza and two assorted empanadas. The mix of the hot chili honey and vinaigrette with soppressatta on the pizza was amazing. We devoured the pizza quickly and wished we had more. For the empanadas, we had the beef and the cheese/onion. Surprisingly, they seemed to be made from pizza dough. Initially, we were a bit stumped by this, but after taking a bite, we fell in love with them. They were incredible. Our waitress wasn't the friendliest and was somewhat stuffy and overly-formal, which detracted from the experience a bit. However, we would definitely return for the excellent food they offer. With hubs, a lot of times I've no clue what to expect. A lot of times, he and I visit his favorite spots. Because- why not? All to say that hubs surprised me on a late Sunday afternoon and asked me if 'we should go to Shelter?' Sure! After the long-lasting Maria's Bazaar in Woodstock shipped out, all I thought was, "what will pop up here"? Hailing from Brooklyn, Shelter had been brewing since like Spring '23 with their major opening in May. Between the trio owners consisting of Argentinian husband+German wife and Argentinian close friend, these folks are making waves. If you want après ski vibes, Shelter Woodstock is pretty damn cozy. With its roaring fireplace, exposed beams, soft lighting, fab bar and this rustic, faux or real antler chandelier- it all comes together for a charmed lodge. You don't feel like you are in the slopes anymore! This trio have made this lodge even lodgier. Not sure if that's a word but I'm making it happen. For a 1pm, I still called anyway to find out if there was any wait. It was easy-breezy after that. The music is a fantastic mix of Creedence Clearwater, The Turtles and more. My Shashouka was petite but doable. The egg oozed perfectly and the accompanying dunking bread, was more than enough. My 'Twisted Cherry' cocktail did its job very nice witha nice dose of potency. Hubs had like a fried egg+ham sandwich and loved it. Service is patchy and felt as if you have to flag someone for attention. Yet, the folks are pleasant. As a long time Woodstock resident I don't often eat in town since it's expensive and largely caters to tourists. However, this week my family and I found ourselves downtown on Saturday afternoon and decided to try Shelter for lunch. It was a great experience. We ordered the special watermelon salad - delicious, the avocado toast, the smash burger, and the shakshuka. We also had two sides - potatoes and string beans. With the exception of the shakshuka, which was under seasoned, everyone enjoyed their meals. The decor is lovely and the wait staff was decent and the service was good. The music was a bit loud but not offensive. All in all, it was a positive experience. read more

normally we would have given this place a 5 star rating but we were so disappointed with our takeout pizzawhen we got home but more about that later...our wonderful friendly professional waiter joshua who we loved highly recommended the kale salad and the empanadas and he was so right.. my girlfriend was so happy about the pizza that she almost cried it brought back so many memories of her youth when pizza was to die for she was in heaven...so much so that we decided to get another extact pie to go for a snack later... we left there full of compliments to the staff and chef and we so satisfied...HOWEVER when we got home the pizza SUCKED!!!!!!!!!! the sauce was the secret ingredient and there was almost none on this dry almost cheeseless pie... we were shocked it was NOTHING what we asked for and my girlfriend was so upset since that pie made her so happy.... if we weren;t leaving the next day to go back home to jersey we would have gotten back in the car immediately to show them n the quality and how it sucked..... the prices are not cheap at shelter but we were on vaca and enjoyed......be aware of takeout pies loved joshua our waiter. read more

I had first tried Shelter last year in late May a year after they opened, and was so excited to come back with a different group of friends. Unfortunately these two dining experiences were vastly different, and things won't last long if they keep going this way. Since we had a large group I made a reservation easily online, but we got there early and told them everyone was here if it was possible to be seated sooner. The hostess said yes, but then showed us to our table missing chairs and table settings. A couple of us ended up standing waiting around for a seat - which was an easy thing to just tell us to wait for a few minutes instead! One of our group had been given a metal chair from outside. We figured out later on what we hadn't noticed, that several of the seats were missing cushions too. The music (playing from a small portable speaker) was too loud and made it impossible to speak to your table. Playing telephone with the wait staff isn't fun either, especially when they say they are having a hard time hearing you too!! It was great the staff were responsive to us asking to have it turned down, and instead put the music above the bar in a spot where it was less intense for everyone. I feel though that within the time they've been open - a better speaker system could've been figured out. It seems the waitress couldn't care less to be good at their job - as ours was rude and absent the whole way through. I asked about mixed drink pitchers, as I recalled getting mojitos for my table last visit this way, and was met with a rude "are you sure that was here?" instead of politely saying they do not have them. But with included gratuity for a larger group - why try I guess? Their long tree table is not completely flat and is too narrow to comfortably support everything on the table, even sharing items. We thought sharing would be fine (I did so last time I was here). In hindsight, maybe we should've all gotten entrees separately. But I think the prices for each are a little too high. Wait time on food felt long. I understand with pizzas to some extent but we were not informed it would take 25-30 minutes after ordering. We would've had them bring the appetizers out sooner. Again - this communication would have been better if the music situation wasn't a hinderance during ordering. Pizzas are cut into four slices, which bothered me regardless of whether they are considered personal or not, since you can't cut them smaller with the butter knife given. The waitress was also aware we would be sharing it as well - I wish she had told the chefs. The pizza was very oily, some spots were burned. But at this point we were so hungry we ate whatever we could. Cesar salad was two slim blocks of romaine and had anchovies! Please put that info on the menu so people know Many people do not like them including some at our table. The meatballs as an appetizer were great - but 4 small ones for $21 is a smack to the face. That's $5.25 per meatball and it was smaller than a golf ball. During the meal as well no one filled our water, they so only did during our wait before the food arrived. I'm so disappointed this was not anything like what I had experienced before. It was hard enough to pin down our waitress for the check, how would we even have told the manager (who I couldn't find) about our dinner. I was so looking forward to coming back but left feeling guilty to have brought my friends there. read more

Really great spot in Woodstock. The food, fresh and well prepared. The service, very welcoming, they are happy you are there. Our server was awesome. Started with a special margarita of the evening. There was a kale salad, and a grilled romaine Caesar salad, plus some empanadas and zucchini fritters. Special tonight was a mushroom risotto which was amazing, fresh broth that the risotto was cooked in and the fresh mushrooms in the dish were great. I ordered the Chorizo toast, which was fantastic. It came with a yummy side salad and breakfast potatoes. The service was attentive and friendly. The downside was that the signage outside said they had the wood fired pizza over going, but then we we were seated we were told that they wouldn't be serving pizzas or empanadas because they weren't going to start the pizza oven. This was due to the heat outside, that said, they need to change their signage outside to reflect that the oven isn't on, since that is literally half of the menu. Wanted to try this place for a while and finally went in! The vibes are soooo cozy in here I loved it. The staff was friendly and made sure we were comfortable in our seats upon seating. However, I'm only giving it 3 stars because they did not have any decaf coffee and when I asked for coffee it was burnt and lukewarm. I asked if they could brew a fresh pot of coffee, which they did. They don't like kids. I made a reservation for 5:30 for myself and my 8 yr old child. When we arrived, the restaurant was virtually empty. We checked in with the hostess, who led us to a communal table. I looked around and there were probably about 20 empty tables, and politely asked if we could sit at one of those. She proceeded to tell me that they were "very busy" and all the tables were reserved (we had a reservation, which we made days prior when they were not even close to being fully booked - availability in every time slot). My child looked very uncomfortable and the hostess finally said "fine, you can sit at that table" and pointed to a table literally in front of the door, on a cold winter night. The food was fine, nothing spectacular. They stopped by our table about every 5 minutes, not to ask how we were doing but to see if they could clear our food. As we were right by the door, we were able to see a whole lot of people come in, parties of 2, without reservations. Not 1 other party was sat at that communal table. At the end of our meal, while clearing our plates, they also cleared my glass of wine which was still half full. Either they didn't like my face, or they really don't want children in there. Even my child said "why were they so weird and rude?". My child is a city kid, and dines out a whole lot. read more

Expecting a traditional empanada, but they were made with the exact dough used to make the pizza. They were okay, but neither had much flavor. They were served with a light salsa and even that seemed bland. I like the way their pizzas are cooked and enjoy the fired char on the edges, however even the pizza with onions, bacon, and brussel sprouts seemed so bland with no flavor. It was ok, but not great. The Boneless rib eye was outstanding; beet salad and dinner side of colorful heirloom tomatoes were delicious. Not kid friendly restaurant, usually in the city waiter's understand baby is priority and try's to get them their meal before the parents and in this case not only did we wait a long time for 1 pizza , the only thing we ordered for our toddler was a patty that wasn't even modified on the bill because per manager we chose to modify our meal, next time the waiters at this place should play devils advocate and let parents know that the cost is going to be $20 plus no matter what even tho we didn't get all the sides and extras this specific meal came with, we just wanted a patty for our toddler. read more

My hubby and I are long time locals who know good food. Unfortunately, we did not find any at Shelter! The restaurant is beautiful and a large upgrade from the previous Maria's restaurant as far as ambiance, however, the food left a LOT to be desired. I had the pancakes and hubby had the Shashuka. Pearl moon kills this place for brunch. Pancakes had fake "maple" syrup and a HUGE glob of butter on top and the actual pancakes were NOT light or fluffy and were under-sweetened. Hubby's shashuka was really just sauce and eggs, baked. Nothing special, but his stomach hurt after eating them. I took one bite of the pancakes and didn't want to proceed because honestly, wasn't worth the calories to continue eating poorly made pancakes. Although our server saw that I had hardly eaten the pancakes and I mentioned that I didn't like them, we were still charged for them. Also, $16 for a very small mimosa is just highway robbery. Left hungry and much lighter in the wallet. Definitely not worth going to again. Pity because the staff seemed nice and the ambiance was lovely, but the quality of the food just wasn't there. Shelter is a special place and exceeds all expectations! The food is absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. The service is friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. The ambiance is cozy yet elegant, and feels so warm and inviting during these colder nights.
