With hubs, a lot of times I've no clue what to expect. A lot of times, he and I visit his favorite spots. And, he also loves satisfying my Yelp needs: visit 'never-been-here-before' restaurants/businesses, let my camera do it's thing while I add interior style photos to my mix and of course, add food photos. Because- why not? All to say that hubs surprised me on a late Sunday afternoon and asked me if 'we should go to Shelter?' Sure! After the long-lasting Maria's Bazaar in Woodstock shipped out, all I thought was, "what will pop up here"? Hailing from Brooklyn, Shelter had been brewing since like Spring '23 with their major opening in May. Between the trio owners consisting of Argentinian husband+German wife and Argentinian close friend, these folks are making waves. If you want après ski vibes, Shelter Woodstock is pretty damn cozy. With its roaring fireplace, exposed beams, soft lighting, fab bar and this rustic, faux or real antler chandelier- it all comes together for a charmed lodge. You don't feel like you are in the slopes anymore! This trio have made this lodge even lodgier. Not sure if that's a word but I'm making it happen. For a 1pm, I still called anyway to find out if there was any wait. It was easy-breezy after that. The music is a fantastic mix of Creedence Clearwater, The Turtles and more. My Shashouka was petite but doable. The egg oozed perfectly and the accompanying dunking bread, was more than enough. My 'Twisted Cherry' cocktail did its job very nice witha nice dose of potency. Hubs had like a fried egg+ham sandwich and loved it. Service is patchy and felt as if you have to flag someone for attention. Yet, the folks are pleasant. As for prices, they're just prices.

As a long time Woodstock resident I don't often eat in town since it's expensive and largely caters to tourists. However, this week my family and I found ourselves downtown on Saturday afternoon and decided to try Shelter for lunch. It was a great experience. We ordered the special watermelon salad - delicious, the avocado toast, the smash burger, and the shakshuka. We also had two sides - potatoes and string beans. With the exception of the shakshuka, which was under seasoned, everyone enjoyed their meals. The decor is lovely and the wait staff was decent and the service was good. The music was a bit loud but not offensive. All in all, it was a positive experience.

I had first tried Shelter last year in late May a year after they opened, and was so excited to come back with a different group of friends. Unfortunately these two dining experiences were vastly different, and things won't last long if they keep going this way. Since we had a large group I made a reservation easily online, but we got there early and told them everyone was here if it was possible to be seated sooner. The hostess said yes, but then showed us to our table missing chairs and table settings. A couple of us ended up standing waiting around for a seat - which was an easy thing to just tell us to wait for a few minutes instead! One of our group had been given a metal chair from outside. We figured out later on what we hadn't noticed, that several of the seats were missing cushions too. The music (playing from a small portable speaker) was too loud and made it impossible to speak to your table. Playing telephone with the wait staff isn't fun either, especially when they say they are having a hard time hearing you too!! It was great the staff were responsive to us asking to have it turned down, and instead put the music above the bar in a spot where it was less intense for everyone. I feel though that within the time they've been open - a better speaker system could've been figured out. It seems the waitress couldn't care less to be good at their job - as ours was rude and absent the whole way through. I asked about mixed drink pitchers, as I recalled getting mojitos for my table last visit this way, and was met with a rude "are you sure that was here?" instead of politely saying they do not have them. But with included gratuity for a larger group - why try I guess? Their long tree table is not completely flat and is too narrow to comfortably support everything on the table, even sharing items. We thought sharing would be fine (I did so last time I was here). In hindsight, maybe we should've all gotten entrees separately. But I think the prices for each are a little too high. Wait time on food felt long. I understand with pizzas to some extent but we were not informed it would take 25-30 minutes after ordering. We would've had them bring the appetizers out sooner. Again - this communication would have been better if the music situation wasn't a hinderance during ordering. Pizzas are cut into four slices, which bothered me regardless of whether they are considered personal or not, since you can't cut them smaller with the butter knife given. The waitress was also aware we would be sharing it as well - I wish she had told the chefs. The pizza was very oily, some spots were burned. But at this point we were so hungry we ate whatever we could. Cesar salad was two slim blocks of romaine and had anchovies! Please put that info on the menu so people know Many people do not like them including some at our table. The meatballs as an appetizer were great - but 4 small ones for $21 is a smack to the face. That's $5.25 per meatball and it was smaller than a golf ball. During the meal as well no one filled our water, they so only did during our wait before the food arrived. I'm so disappointed this was not anything like what I had experienced before. It was hard enough to pin down our waitress for the check, how would we even have told the manager (who I couldn't find) about our dinner. I was so looking forward to coming back but left feeling guilty to have brought my friends there.

Good Night - Crispy wild shrimp with shishito

Good Night

We went to Good Night for dinner on a Tuesday recently and it was a great experience…read more The vibe of this place is great. It really felt like a cool, upscale dining. We were pleasantly surprised to see how many people were there that night, which helped contribute to the atmosphere. The staff was incredibly nice and attentive. We started with the Tteok Bokki and Crispy Wild Shrimp with Shishito peppers. We also got the Bibimbap and the Vietnamese steak frites. The flavors throughout this meal were well developed and delicious. The Tteok Bokki was so special and cheesy and delicious. Almost like a chewy rice noodle Asian Mac and cheese vibe. The wild shrimp dish was great. The components were all great, what was super surprising was how amazing the shishito peppers were. It was the best bite of that dish, which is saying a lot. The mains were equally as good. The flavors were all there. The steak was tender and delicious. The bibimbap was so good. We happily took home our leftovers. Overall, it was a great experience. It was a good price, given how well everything was executed, and I would happily come back either just for cocktails and apps or for the full meal.

This place is not kid friendly at all! The assistant manager was possibly racist, rude, and…read morepassive aggressive. We were told to turn down the babies iPad in that loud but empty place! We decided on Good Night because of the diverse menu, atmosphere, and we had eaten there while in town last year. We made reservations for the eight of us consisting of six adults and two children (both kids were my two year old grand babies). Upon arrival there were approximately four other tables eating there. Music played loudly in the background and people talked and laughed equally as loud. Our server came out and took our drink order. We had the babies seated in the center of the table next to each other with their parents on each side and grandparents across from them. They were extremely well behaved and quiet. We gave them each a book. Then, we put an iPad between them while playing a movie. Soon after, the assistant manager came over to our table and told my daughter "I'm going to need you to turn that down. Thank you"', and walked away. This was a kids iPad that even at max volume is not that loud. The sound of the iPad was in no way louder than noise level of the restaurant. The iPad was actually much lower than the voices at our own table. The babies were actually leaning in to hear. At that point I knew we weren't wanted as we were a family of minorities. We were the only table of black and brown people there. We shouldn't have to say that our table consisted of an anesthesiologist, a chemist, an engineer, executives, two babies, and a teacher. We shouldn't have to say that we are a very middle class family who dine in restaurants of similar caliber (often with the babies) probably weekly; yet, have never ever been asked such a thing. So we politely put on our coats and left. On the way out we did speak to the general manager who apologized and offered us a meal at a later time which we declined

It was a Thursday so maybe things weren't as busy as normal but we showed up a little early and the back biergarten was open so we got some drinks as it was a nice spring afternoon. The bartender was very friendly and when we attempted to bring our drinks around front she let us know that we had to finish them first. The Venue itself reminded me a bit of the nearby Levon Helm studios in that it's an open space with a balcony overlooking everything and seating and standing room on the base floor. One thing I loved about this show is the sound was great. We sat stage left but the PA was subtly piping the DJ and guitar parts from stage right. It wasn't a huge crowd but people were having a good time with some standing room in front of the bar dancing etc. The bartenders were super attentive and responsive during the performance. I have been to Bearsville, Levon Helm and now Colony and I really feel lucky to have such intimate performance spaces somewhat locally. All of the staff were super friendly. Will be back for sure!

Bar was overflowed and took a long time to save everyone, I think no one expected the crowd of that size. Kitchen worked smoothly and food was bar quality but decent. We had a lot of fun and definitely will be back. I took away one star because of the luck of seating. Not enough tables or bar space or any kind of seating for everyone. Only about 50 people who got there at the opening had a chance to get a seat. Others like us lucked out and had to figure out how to eat without a table .

At first glance the menu appears vaguely Mexican-inspired, but the cafe's decor and ambiance gives more of a New American feel. I was pretty excited to dive into my burrata sandwich. For me, the dressing is make-or-break for any salad, and I was pleasantly impressed by the side salad here. I was pretty ravenous and happily downed the entire sandwich. On the other hand, the fries were a little thick for my preferences (though that's probably best to slow me down!). It was a solid choice. Just be aware that it's not a quick grab-and-go type of meal (though they do offer takeout), nor is it light fare. In contrast to the other spots we've eaten at in town, Oriole 9 did NOT charge a credit card fee.

We were wandering through Woodstock and needed a place to grab lunch. I happened to notice Oriole…read more9 and remembered hearing great things about it, so we decided to stop in there. The place was very crowded and resembled an upscale cafe with a small bar. The food was farm-to-table and reminded of something I might see in Los Angeles, as many of the menu items were healthy, hearty, and natural. I began with a Matcha Latte with almond milk, which was bold, earthy, and creamy. It was one of the better ones I had ever had. Similarly, I had an incredible Egg White Omelet with my additions of tomatoes, peppers, and mushrooms. It was super fresh, well-seasoned, and not at all greasy. It was served with a small salad of greens, carrots, and grape tomatoes. These tomatoes were a bit mushy, but I enjoyed the dressing on the salad. I also received Rye Toast, which seemed like it had come from a bakery, rather than a supermarket package. My companion had ordered a Pretzel Bun Burger with no cheese and a side of fries. However, since our server did not write down the order, we were a bit nervous. A few moments after, she had come back to the table asking if he wanted breakfast potatoes or fries, to which he repeated "fries". When the burger came, it looked amazing, but was also slathered with cheese, so he had to send it back. When the corrected version arrived, we were impressed with the thickness of the patty. He said the burger was excellent, and I loved the few fries I snagged. Aside from the ordering snafu, we had a great experience at Oriole 9! The menu was vast and offered something for everyone. I would definitely recommend giving it a visit.

The Japanese clothing retailer is scarily on point and while Sharkie's isn't mentioned by name, if you know of any other prominent meatball merchants in the heart of Woodstock, please promptly let me know. My current go-to is the "Create Your Meatballs with Veggies Bowl." The roasted eggplant ($5.15 per scoop) is superb, especially with the default marinara sauce and shredded mozzarella ($2.58). You can't go wrong with the beef & pork or the turkey meatballs ($6.18 for 2 of the same kind). Chicken meatballs and chickpea vegan balls available too. The only downside is that it can get zoo-like at peak times, but the wait usually isn't too bad. Sharkie's has a bar and three tables so it's not huge. But the easygoing and helpful staff are standouts and handle the crowds with aplomb. Sharkie's has a little grocery store next door with a lot of local foods and frozen meatballs if you want to recreate the Sharkie's experience at home. Bring cash or a debit card for a discount!
