They have a little area with toys and books and little stools, perfect for kids. Their pastries are really good and they have such a good variety. Decent coffee place at Main and 32nd. Parking is available on the street, but can be a bit limited. The place is modern and hipster. Nice bright interior with white tiles and wooden floor. Only complaint is that good seating is a bit lacking. They only have 1 proper (long) table for working. The rest are mostly cushions on benches and low tables. Can get a bit uncomfortable if one sits for an extended period. Something to keep in mind. Staff are friendly. Coffee tasted fine. read more

I have visited Matchstick Coffee several times in the past. Not only do they offer a variety of drinks, but they also have a wide selection of baked goods. In my opinion, their baked goods are among the best in Vancouver's coffee shops. Recently, I visited the Main Street location for the Nomsmag Fall Food Fest, which offers limited-time special drinks and baked goods. I got the Pumpkin Cheesecake Croissant and Pumpkin Chai Latte. Pumpkin Cheesecake Croissant ingredient are Pumpkin Puree, Mascarpone Cheese, Icing sugar, whipping cream, pumpkin spice and white chocolate. Needless to say, the filling and topping of mascarpone cheese, whipped cream, and pumpkin purée were blended so well--neither too heavy nor too sweet--making it very delicious. A notable point was the croissant's dough texture: so crispy on the outside yet properly moist on the inside. It was absolutely delightful! Pumpkin Chai Latte ingredient are Pumpkin Puree, Vanilla Extract, Raw sugar, Chai mix and Steamed milk. So far, it was the best Fall Food Fest drink I've had. The chai mix and pumpkin purée blended perfectly, and the hint of flavor from the spiced topping added a nice touch. It was absolutely delicious! The service was excellent--friendly and attentive to customers. They also offer another special drink and a cookie for the Fall Food Fest. The matcha latte was just okay in my opinion. The matcha taste is very faint so it didn't taste like much. It might be more fitting for people who like their drinks more light. The ambience is very nice tho! Great for doing work or catching up with friends! read more

This Matchstick location offered take out only since the COVID lock down in March and I am happy to advise that they have now opened up their dining area with COVID compliant restrictions. The communal table has plexiglass barriers and each area is sanitized by staff after a client leaves. The client is responsible for removing all their own items as paper cups, napkins et al. When the client is ready to depart, they are to flip the coaster over to red to state that the seating area needs to be cleaned/sanitized. The staff clean the area then flip the coaster over to green to indicate that the area is good for seating. Nicely done Matchstick...and of course the coffee is okay. read more

But they're croissants and muffins, oh em gee, sooo fluffy and crispy the croissant, and you can taste tons of butter in them. There went my diet. And the nut and berries muffins were also so good! I have been to this café before but I didn't order any of their specialty drinks nor coffee. You must think what do you mean? I love my tea and I generally go for a cup of straight up green tea (no milk and no sugar). This time I came to meet a friend of mine and her sweet little boy. Since the place is quite small, she got there early to save us a table so we could stay for lunch. The service is always pleasant and the staff really looks like they're well treated by management which is great! Since I've never eaten lunch here I asked about they smoked salmon poached egg and the tuna melt. They use an in-house sourdough bread for their breakfast and lunches. It was nice however when there are sauces on top of the bread it makes it a little hard to cut up. I went with the salmon and somehow felt like I needed something different to drink today and saw the London Fog on the menu. I asked them to replace reg milk with their in-house oat and nut milk. I don't know why but I asked what else is in the London Fog before ordering it and she said Cardamon and that was it I need it. Did you know in Ayurvedic medicine, cardamom is a cooling spice therefore great for any form of inflammation in the body. I'm a big fan of this coffee shop that's a little further up from the main hustle and bustle of Main St. Popped in here recently to get some work done and there was plenty of room to sit down despite how busy it was. I ordered an iced almond milk latte and poached eggs & salmon on rye toast. Instead of the cream cheese I opted for the pesto spread underneath, which was surprisingly yummy. This was smaller than other toasts I've gotten from other cafes, but nonetheless, it was still a filling snack. The cafe itself is airy and spacious, with plenty of plants and windows to let in that natural lighting. The staff were super friendly and accomodating. A step above the typical coffee shop in terms of their food, which seems to be on par with a proper brunch restaurant. I got the tuna melt and an earl grey muffin at my latest visit here and it made for a wonderful lunch. They make their tuna melt open-faced which gets a little messy but really lets you enjoy the texture and savouriness of the cheese melted on the tuna. The muffin had a nice crunchy exterior, but with a moist, melt-in-your-mouth inside. I appreciate that their muffins are somewhat reasonably sized so you can enjoy it alongside your lunch, unlike many places that do muffins big enough to be a meal on their own. I also had a London fog here forever ago that checked out. The cafe feels tucked away from the hustle of nearby Main St and Kingsway, but the inside is very airy and spacious. There's a moderate amount of seating, but it looks like there's less than there is because the majority of it is at one long table, with a few armchairs and couches in the corners. I was skeptical of the communal seating arrangement at first, but I do like how it generates a sense of amiability. The staff are also quite friendly. It's not exactly cheap, but definitely comparable to similar places. read more

I'm in the area super early - 7am on a Sunday. What am I doing around here in this ungodly hour? I signed myself up for RBC x Children's Hospital's Fundraising run at Nat Bailey. So...I dropped husband off work, found parking and waited for 8am to come. I noticed Matchstick is open at 7am (Yes! There are people who are awake in this ungodly hour with me.) Walked over and decided to go with the masala chai latte ($4.70). I'm on my 7th day coffee rehab stint so far and I am trying not to have coffee at all this morning. So chai it is. I didn't ask for any modifications, bit in retrospect maybe I should have. The latte was a bit too sweet for me. Nice latte art, but flavour wise I wish I can taste the chai portion (the spices) a bit more. The inside feels minimalistic with 1 long table and a few short stumps for coffee tables - I would imagine eating lunch here may be uncomfortable. They have a long bench out side where you can enjoy the morning sun. Overall, good place to kill my 45mins. I find the tea and coffee at a premium pricing for what you get. Natural light! Love the bright space they have with shared table seating. Seats are a tad uncomfy but still okay. Quite loud (they have music running in the background) and busy with the espresso machine and food preparation. Bring headphones if you are planning to study. They have a good selection of food and drinks. Baristas and workers here are friendly. Their brunch is very western. Lots of street parking nearby (and its free). We tried the berry chocolate scone and the smoke salmon eggs on toast. Both are just pretty good, not wow. Will come back if I am in the area and need to chill. My parents came to town, and the first place I thought to get away from them (in the nicest way possible) was Matchstick Coffee on Main Street. I sat for five hours straight and crushed my to-do list in this workspace haven. Why I love: * The space - the coffee shop has large open windows that bring in so much natural light. It's such a nice summery study spot if you want to trick yourself into thinking you're outside while still doing work. The layout is open-concept, I think that's good fengshui. The large birch(?) table in the middle lets you space out your papers and work. I looked like child with my crayons and all my coloring books spread out around me. * Minimalism - maybe it's because I have ADHD, but the cleanliness, the simple decor, the concise menu prevents any amount of decision fatigue. It's a stress-free zone for me. Good to know: * I use car-share (Car2go). I hate going downtown to study because even with dedicated car-share parking, I've managed to mess that up and get towed. However, I love coming to Main Street because residential parking is a saint. It's conveniently close to all the shops and there are always spots. * There aren't many plug-ins, so I came with my laptop and all my devices charged. * The menu is concise, there's coffee and tea options, baked goods on display, sandwich options, but there isn't an overwhelming amount of selection. This works well for some, not so well for others. Food/Drink: * Ratatouille Sandwich - was delicious. I'm not usually a fan of all-veggie sandwiches, but the combination of warm roasted veggies with cheese and sauce made this a sure winner. It was a bit messy, so I definitely should've asked for a fork. But classy girl here just scooped it up with her fingers because I wanted an excuse to use their cute washrooms! * Sparking Hibiscus & Rose Tea - a little bit watery from all the ice, but the flavor was refreshing. Usually anything floral-sounding like hibiscus, rose, and lavender is an instant-like for me. This one was average, not too sweet, but quenched the thirst. * Pourover - since I know nothing about coffee, I can't comment. I don't even remember the name of it. read more

Finally got a chance to visit this super cute cafe! Love how this place is so bright with natural sun light there are a lot of windows! It's also super spaced out for people to sit all around so you don't feel squished! The decoration is super cute and relatively quiet plus the music is perfect volume! UPDATE: Returned the next day to tell them about the mixup and they charged me a regular croissant price for the almond croissant and although not great, they accepted the mistake. BUT THE CROISSANT...I NOW KNOW WHY ITS STATED AS ONE OF THE BEST IN VANCOUVER....the frangipane is sweet, buttery and scrumptious while the flaky pastry is a perfect compliment to the textures of the middle for a chewy bite. The top is covered in slivered almonds and the entire thing is just heavenly....although i know right away it can be nothing more than an occasional treat. Definitely worth it.... The good and the not bad, but very sad ): I came here on a saturday afternoon and was greeted with the "not bad" at first because of an extremely long line and service that was quite slow. I was glad to see that the people were genuine and helpful though so it didn't bother me much. The good were the pain au chocolate (so flaky, buttery and a deliciously rich treat great when heated up) and the fact that there were almond croissants still in stock! The very sad...when i got home and opened up the bag, i didnt see a almond croissant but a regular one....when i called the store to inquire about the prices (and to see if i was overcharged) there was no answer and instead a prerecorded message that played back as if they never answered the phone. It was strange how I didn't receive a receipt either so I have no idea if I was just handed the wrong item or if the barista had heard me incorrectly. It really isn't their fault but i was just so sad when i found out that had to write this review this way. Great pain au chocolate croissants though. read more

When I'm craving a pastry with my coffee, their Almond Croissant is a must! I've been to this location and their Fraser St location on many occasions. Friendly staff, plenty of vegan and gluten-free options -- this is your standard Vancity hipster cafe. The only dairy-free milk option is a blended oat milk coming from a plastic store-packaged bottle. The cappuccino is pretty solid! Yes, I still know nothing about coffee, but this one is creamy and a bit more on the acidic side. The sourdough though -- damnnn. I got the vegan pumpkin cashew spread and jam on toast. It's two thick slices of artisan sourdough and the spread on top is a perfect balance of healthy fats and protein, completed with a dash of pumpkin seeds. Plenty of seating and free wifi is available. Best part is the early opening hours, even on weekends! Great for working, but does get pretty loud as the day goes on. read more

My two stars is for the chronic terrible staff attitude (they barely notice you and always seem little perturbed that you want something), and the snail's pace . when it's the least bit busy it takes forever to get anything! Also responsible for the lack of stars is the space itself. Echoey room can be loud, and the seating is either hard flat wood benches or boxes, or a big long shared table with all the laptops. This location is beautiful. It's super bright and modern. The music is a bit too loud and it is a bit warm inside and ventilation isn't great. Parking is scarce but you can find parking around the neighbourhood if you circle it a few times. Seating is hard to find but there are benches along the window if a table is not available. Coffee is good and the double baked almond croissant is delightful. There are too many people with their laptops sitting there for hours on end which isn't good for business. read more

One of the best coffee roasters in Vancouver. Highly recommend the Bulldog. They also have takeaway prepackaged coffee beans. They make great gifts especially for out of towners. Decor is clean and focus on open space. Very friendly and helpful staff. Main Street and Kingsway location doesn't have much street parking. Came here for drinks twice and must say the interior decor is really modern and bright. The coffee shop gives a nice friendly/chill environment to just sit for awhile and do your own thing or hang out with friends. The spacing inside is quite large and right at the centre there is a long community table where it can sit parties of people. The drinks are all fresh brewed coffee, cappachino, fraps, teas and etc. What I enjoy about this place is that their coffee is brewed and made very fresh upon ordering. Some teas take some time (average 10 mins to make?) but when you get it and drink it, man it tastes good. The place also has snacks such as croissants, cookies and i think muffins? I only tried a cookie and it was nothing special. Mainly most customers come for the drinks. Tho the drinks are quality made i wish they would give a larger portion. Some drinks are a bit more expensive but they come only in a small glass which is a bit disappointing when your paying almost $6 for a small beverage. Also when you get some ice tea drinks they tend to pour it into plastic cups which I found a bit cheap since their whole store looks expensive but they can't give you your drink in glass... They do have outstanding drinks and unique ones indeed, however they are a bit more pricy than other coffee shops out there and I wish their drink portion could be a bit larger than how it is now to make it worth it more imo. read more

We really enjoyed our time at Matchstick today. What a great place and a great vibe! This is definitely a great place to hang out, drink some really good coffee, and get some poached eggs. The staff was really nice, and I was just overall very impressed. I got the poached eggs with smoked salmon and it was excellent! The toast is made in house, and the salmon tastes so fresh. With the dill, pesto added it's an amazing dish that I would highly recommend. I also got coffee, of course. I went with a Guatemalan upon the recommendation of one of the workers and it was great. Matchstick had a large variety though, which I thought was really cool. They probably had 10 different roasts to choose from, which is great for those who can go there often enough to need some variety. Overall this was a great experience. Today I stopped by to grab their famous almond croissants $6 and normally worth the price. But I got this sad this, felt so light as they are normally stuffed and where the hell are my almonds! Great location though it gets really busy in the mornings and it can sometimes be really loud! Great place to work with free wifi. Lovely modern decor with great minimalist feel and lots of long benches to sit and chat. Love their baked goodies! I tried their almond scone with agave topped with fruit and it was a great treat. It would be great to have more alternatives to coffee - i.e matcha, turmeric lattes. I tried their herbal peppermint tea, I believe it was a blend and it didn't taste great! A more accurate representation of my experience here would be 3.5/5. I tried the latte and poached egg smoked salmon on toast. I thought the toast was really good with a perfect half cooked egg, but the latte was a little too acidic for my liking. The environment was clean and aesthetically pleasing. There were windows all around the cafe so lots of natural lighting. There isn't much service at all, as everything is self serve. I want to point out that the cashier came off as rude when my friend tried to order a toast for herself. She asked for a pork toast, and the cashier said something along the lines of " We're out of pork, and the kitchen is closing soon anyway" in a very impolite tone. Was really looking forward to this location as it's in my hood but boy did it disappoint. 1. Top marks for the interior decor: that's half a star. Where it fails is the noise level: music is too loud. I went in the afternoon (comfortable late summer temperature of 18 degrees) and it was HOT. The place was packed and turnover was SLOW with a sea of laptops, likely contributing to the HEAT. 2. Coffee: Kind of important since it's a coffee shop. I ordered the brewed coffee and it was very underwhelming despite the time spent making it and all the coffee glassware/equipment. Reminds me of a Starbucks Pike at double the price. 3. Baked goods: chocolate cookie was fresh out of the oven and satisfying. Butter goodness. There's the other half star. 4. Service: Cashier was impatient and the coffee order wasn't clear in terms of where/when to pick up fresh brews. When asked, was pointed to a counter, "over there" with zero eye contact. Also, while the cookie was delish, the turnoff was the server picked it up with her bare hands instead of using tongs. With the many coffee options in Vancouver, I won't be coming back any time soon. I rather go to the Parrot Cafe in the Hillcrest Community Centre a few blocks away. At least I know what to expect there. read more
