On a Summer stroll into San Mateo County inside Daly City is the Serramonte Mall and I landed at Matcha Ren. There are many flavors of matcha for Don Juan de la Matcha. In the matcha world I am connoisseur I decided to try their mango matcha. It was tasty and the was not too sweet. I also had the blueberry matcha which appeared purple. It had was delicious smooth matcha taste. Overall it was descent matcha at a shopping mall. Its always good to try a new foodie place but don't expect the best of the best when it comes to matcha...in a mall. The matcha quality is extremely poor, as someome who has tried Izumi Matcha and Matsumatcha, Matcha Ren is considered dirt. The matcha is gritty, tasteless, and almost like the business before this one if it isn't the same and just a different name I got 25% sweetness because I hate when drinks are overly sweet and my boyfriend got 100% and there was NO difference in the sweetness levels lmao. The last time I visited the Serramonte location of Matcha Ren was during the grand opening less than a year ago. Now it seems the hype has significantly died down and only one person was waiting for her order when I arrived. There were two baristas working at the time, though I was standing at the counter to place my order for a good three to four minutes before finally being acknowledged. I wanted to try the new ube toasted coconut matcha latte and crème brûlée matcha latte and ordered both with oat milk. I like how the business is transparent with what milks it uses in its drinks: Kirkland Signature whole milk, Califia Farms almond milk, and Califia Farms oat milk, with the nut milks being an extra $1 charge. The place is clean for the most part, but that is not saying much considering Matcha Ren is just a kiosk in the center of the mall. The drinks were ready in about five minutes. I thought it was a bit weird how the ube roasted coconut drink had a lid but the crème brûlée did not when both had the toppings poured over the matcha in the same way; I was provided a lid for the crème brûlée upon request. Both drinks were made with less ice upon request and even then the drinks tasted watered down with minimal matcha flavor. The ube and crème brûlée flavors were also not too distinct and definitely got lost in the matcha when mixed. After a few minutes, the matcha in the ube drink already showed signs of separation and this made me question the quality of the ingredients used. I could see why Matcha Ren did not maintain its hype over the past year. The staff also did not try to make up for the flavorless drinks with great service as they kept me waiting for minutes before even acknowledging me at the counter. Even the previous matcha spot in Serramonte was much more flavorful with better service. I stopped by for their BOGO drinks this past weekend for their matcha lattes. I came on Sunday and there was a short line. There were 3 employees working and the line moved pretty slow. They took orders for a couple of customers and then stopped to make the drinks. The offer was valid for 3 specific drinks: ube toasted coconut, crème brûlée or oreo matcha affogato. We got the ube and creme brûlée. I didn't see any toppings listed on their menu. It would have been nice to have some boba. Both drinks had a good strong matcha flavor but tasted a bit grainy/powdery to me. The ube cream mixed well into the drink and the ube flavor was noticeable. The creme brûlée was mid. I wished the sugar was torched a bit longer to create that crunchy sugary top. It didn't really enhance the drink once mixed and just tasted like a regular matcha latte. read more

It was my first time walking around this area, and I was in the mood to try something matcha-based. This shop immediately caught my eye--the desserts looked beautiful and very tempting. I decided to try the Strawberry Mont Blanc Parfait ($10) and a Strawberry Daifuku ($4.80). The staff let me know that they were out of whipped cream, so they substituted custard instead, which I appreciated them explaining upfront. When the parfait was placed on the counter, it accidentally tipped over, so it didn't look as pretty as expected (you can see that in the photo). I told the staff it was totally fine and that I could still enjoy it--I really didn't mind. They were incredibly sweet and grateful, and as a kind gesture, they gave me an extra daifuku for free. The staff even offered to remake the parfait, but I declined since the shop was quite busy and I didn't want them to feel rushed. Honestly, the service here really stood out--very thoughtful and warm. As for the food, it wasn't amazing, but it definitely wasn't bad either. Overall, it was enjoyable and satisfying. This is my first time here, but I always see the spaghetti matcha soft serve on tiktok. I went for the mochi treats to eat when I get home. The line wasn't too busy and I was helped right away. I quickly scanned what they have and saw a chocolate strawberry mochi and matcha strawberry mochi. I was low key disappointed when I opened it that the mochi was cut in half and a strawberry was placed in the middle.. but I honestly didn't know what I was expecting. I looove matcha and was so excited about this place after hearing about the weekend promo, but sadly left underwhelmed and disappointed in what we got. I'm hoping the quality of their items improve with time since they're brand new! I understand that they were super busy on their opening weekend, so this review largely excludes the service aspect. But just for context, we waited in line for around 40 min, then another 10-15 minutes for our order. Strawberry Mont Blanc Parfait (full price $10) = 2.5/5 Interesting concept and looks really cool, but based on how small it is, it's not worth the price in my opinion. My partner enjoyed it more than I did, so it's also based on taste preference. I didn't take the best photo of it, but due to how they fill the cup, there are also pockets of air between the layers of cereal/jelly and the ice cream which makes it even less filling. Banana Cream Matcha Latte (full price $6.75, purchased for half price $3.37) = 1/5 Super watered-down to the point that it tasted like weak banana water to me. I did substitute for oat milk so not sure if that played a role. I barely tasted any matcha. I noticed there were about 8-9 employees there but only 3-4 were actually making drinks and food--1 was just taking orders and the rest seemed to be stock taking or doing behind-the-scenes things (one was just taking videos, probably for marketing). it was evident that many of the staff were new as they were referring to recipe sheets as they prepared the drinks. unfortunately this manifested in pretty slow preparation and thus the long lines. That was a definite plus....but the line wrapped around to the other side of the fountain at 11:15am Sunday morning (They open at 11). The line took roughly 30-35 minutes to get to the register. Then had to wait another 5-10 minutes for my order. I ordered a Matcha Latte and a Matcha Dango. The Latte was tasty, but it seemed a bit watered down. Came here for the grand opening and was unfortunately quite disappointed. 3 stars is a little bit generous imo but I assume they are still ironing some of the kinks out in their first few weeks. First of all, I have a lot to say about their operations. I understand that they don't want customers to wait super long between ordering and receiving their orders (or maybe it's so the employees aren't overwhelmed with orders) - but taking ~3 orders every 10 mins or so is not the way to do it!! Especially when the cashier doesn't have anything to do when she's waiting for drink orders to process before taking more orders. A lot of popular boba shops continually process orders, and text customers when their orders are ready. This is actually an ideal process for Matcha Ren since it is located inside a mall so customers can walk around the mall while waiting for their order. When I visited, the biggest bottleneck was the drink making. Most customers ordered at least one drink, but only some people ordered desserts. But there was just one poor guy whisking matcha nonstop, and there were two employees making the base of the drinks. Meanwhile, you have one cashier idle half the time and 2-3 others working on prepping desserts (which I think could be done prior to store opening)...there has to be a more efficient way to run the operations. When I walked past the shop after lunch, I noticed they pivoted to pre-batched matcha...which I guess is a way to solve the drink bottleneck. Now onto the drinks. They're just okay, unfortunately. Quality of the matcha is not as good as the better matcha places in the Bay. The strawberry in the strawberry matcha was overpowering and also a bit too sweet. Also...for oat milk, I noticed they use the oat beverage from Costco. Feels like a scam to charge $1 extra for mid tier "oat milk". Oh, quality control was also off. If you look at my photo, my cup was only 90% filled, while the same drink behind mine (someone else's order) was 100% filled. I'm not complaining because the difference is just milk but drinks should be consistent. So yeah, even though were was a 50% discount for grand opening, I was not very happy about waiting an hour for mid matcha. Came here for the grand opening! They were having 50% off drinks and soft serves, and the line was incredibly long HAHA Started lining up a little after 6pm on Sunday, waited 40 min in line, and my order was ready in a little less than 15 min - Matcha Latte - based on what I could tell from the color and taste, they use a lower grade of matcha (and as if to confirm this, the remnants of my drink started turning yellow on the short drive back home lol), but they add enough sweetness so that the drink is still palatable. Looked like ice took up about half the cup, so you're definitely getting less of the drink itself. If you're getting a matcha soft serve as well, I'd recommend drinking the matcha latte first, since the flavor of the soft serve is stronger, and you might not taste the matcha latte as much if you have it after the soft serve - Matcha Dango - the soft serve was not icy, which I appreciated. You can definitely taste the bitterness of the matcha, but it was less of a concentrated high-quality bitter matcha taste and more of a lower-quality bitter matcha taste. The dango was soft and chewy but flavorless I could pay less than $1 more than their full price to get a way better matcha latte elsewhere in the bay (e.g., Komeya no Bento in SF), so I don't really see myself coming back, but if you're really craving matcha and in the area, assuming the wait isn't long, it's a convenient place to maybe satisfy that craving read more

We ordered the strawberry Montblanc parfait, which had jelly, cornflakes, ice cream and topped with green chestnut spaghetti. It had so many layers of textures and the chestnut was so delicious $10. I happened to be at Serramonte today, saw Matcha Ren and decided to give it a try since there was no line. I ordered the matcha latte and watched the worker make it like a hawk because I'm crazy like that sometimes. She added the syrup, set the cup on a scale, poured the milk, added ice and then to my surprise, walked to the side and whisked the matcha right in front of me. YESSSS! I've finally found another matcha spot that makes their matcha to order. Even the matcha spots in Japantown don't do this! Again, there was a scale and it seems like the worker made everything pretty precisely which is awesome. It's important to have consistency and you can't go wrong if you're weighing/measuring every step instead of using them eyeballs. I was really excited to drink it and when I did, I was pleasantly surprised. It was delicious! Matcha flavor was good. It wasn't too milky and it was the perfect sweetness for me (I got 2 pumps of syrup instead of their usual 3). To me, the drink itself was 5 stars. It really hit the spot. I docked a star because of the matcha whisking station. After my matcha latte was done, the worker left the whisking station as is. She didn't clean or rinse the whisk or bowl. The bowl actually still had matcha in there, but there was no one in line after me. The whisk looked like it had old matcha clumps stuck to it. I didn't expect them to use a fresh, clean whisk or bowl every time, but I thought they would at least rinse them with hot water so the next drink doesn't end up tasting off. Lazy man's flavored ice cream. Never seen anything like it. The flavor comes from the sloppy drizzle on top and it isn't even dispersed evenly in the middle of the swirl of the soft serve but just on top. $6 for this. This was sesame, tastes like the sesame paste dessert soup though. read more

This was one of the worst matchas I've ever had. I ordered a matcha latte and it was the most bland thing I've ever tasted. It was mostly milk and I could tell by how white the cup was and how little matcha there was before I mixed it that it wasn't going to be good. It tasted super bland and tasted like super diluted watery milk. It was terrible and I wasted $8 (they up charged me $1 to sub for almond milk - $1 is outrageous) and I wish i could get my money back. Starbucks makes better matcha than this. Came on Saturday after lunch and there was only one person ahead of in line. Ordering was quick and it didn't take long for my drink to come out. I tried the matcha shake and it was good. Cold, creamy, and matcha. I would get again. It's a kiosk with limited seating and tables, but it feels clean and at least it's centrally located in the mall, so it's easy to get to. read more

The matcha drinks were decent. We also tried the crepes, but they're served wrapped in plastic, which became a problem as the crepe and ice cream melted -- would be much better served on a plate. The bigger issue was finding a fruit fly in one of our drinks. Luckily we caught it before drinking. To their credit, the staff were quick to replace it without any hassle. read more

A small matcha stand located next to the fountain area inside Serramonte Mall. They serve fresh mochi, along with a variety of other matcha drinks and desserts. The matcha strawberry mochi has a decent matcha flavor coming from the mochi skin and the lima bean paste pairs nice with the sweetness and juiciness of the strawberry. The strawberry chocolate mochi is more decadent and rich, with a chocolate red bean paste. The mochis are also served with a piece of string to cut through the middle, which makes it a fun eating experience. It is a bit on the pricier side (4.80 for 1 piece; 15.82 for 3 pieces including tax), but its a nice sweet treat to get once in a while. read more

I see that this is a newly opened spot, so I didn't want to rate too harshly. I ordered mango milk, matcha mochi and matcha americano. The mango milk was ok, but a bit too sweet for my taste. The mochi was stale and not chewy. I took a bite, and threw it out. The matcha americano was an ok also, and this was the only non sweetened drink they had. Oddly they don't have anything unsweetened on the menu. read more
