Me and my kids have great appreciation for hole in the wall donut places -- w/ special affinity for those near our home. That said, Royal Donut did not disappoint. It was late in the day by the time we got here, and we took a chance that we did not regret. I worried the donut variety would be limited or that they'd taste state. That was so not the case. The owner was friendly. It appeared that there was a spike in business -- a lot of folks sauntered in when we got there. We got one donut each: 2 glazed twists and 1 chocolate donut. The sweetness level was perfect -- not too much or too little. The donuts were airy and fluffy. I got a cup of coffee which kept me awake for the balance of our ride to Monterey -- a much needed thing given the heavy traffic that day. Coming from a family who use to own a donut shop, I'm a bit picky on my donuts. They have to have the right texture, taste, and level of sweetness (which is not too sweet). I tried both a glazed donut and chocolate glazed from Royal Donut and they met my donut standards. Upon entering the donut shop, I was immediately greeted by the owner. He was very friendly and you can tell he came from a hard working background. During this visit, I also ordered a Vietnamese Iced Coffee and Thai Iced Tea. As the other reviews have said, the Vietnamese Iced Coffee is great. He even asks you how sweet you want it (which I rarely get asked!) People raved about the Vietnamese Coffee at Royal Donut so I figured I'd give it a shot while having a couple donuts. The Royal Donut is located in a busy location in Daly City, but it's worth the trip especially if you want to go grocery shopping too at the Ranch 99. The store is definitely old fashioned, but the customer service is friendly and patient. The only downside is that they only take cash and I was lucky enough to have enough cash. Two donuts and a Vietnamese Coffee made my total $12.85 with most of the damage to my wallet being from the coffee. It was a pretty good Vietnamese Coffee though. They also asked what sweetness level I wanted which is definitely nice. I opted for regular which honestly is perfect to me. I enjoyed my drink a lot and you can see your drink being prepared in front of you. I also felt like pigging out on some Maple Bacon Donuts and a Glazed Donut. The bacon may not have been crispy, but it really tastes great with the maple donut. Both donuts were so good. They were soft and fluffy on the inside. So I have to admit, I didn't really like the famous banana bear claw. But I think that was entirely my fault. In my head, I had been picturing an actual bread-based pastry, with some banana flavoring in it. With nuts on top. I have no idea why. It's pretty clear from the pictures exactly what you're getting: a glazed donut, shaped like a bear claw, with a slab of ripe banana on the inside. So here's what I'll say: If that's what you're expecting, you're really going to like this. You might think it's a little bit sweet but you're going to like it. I also got a simple glazed yeast donut for my wife, who is a connoisseur of such things. She said it was probably the best glazed donut she's ever had. And, yes, the lady who works at the donut shop is super nice. I'm planning to go back and get more regular donuts that I actually want and leave the bear claws to you folks who actually like bear claws. I believe we got a few donut holes, a chocolate twist, a strudel, and some kind of croissant. I tried a donut hole and part of the strudel. Taste: 5 Value: 5 Service: 5 Ambience: 5 The dough they use is less sweet and slightly "breadier" than regular shops, but everything else in terms of how they make the doughnuts is the same. It means the texture is slightly different and makes the toppings matter more. They have a banana bear claw which was, quite frankly, far tastier than I thought a bear claw or banana-based pastry could ever be. They also had a killer coconut-covered doughnut that was phenomenal. I was not a huge fan of their maple bacon - it had a great taste, but the bacon texture wasn't for me. I was pleasantly surprised at the customer service AND great donuts here! It was a young Filipino woman and I think a trainee employee assisting us on our random visit here. Since we were in the area and craving donuts, I googled the nearest local donut shop and this place came up. Parking is a bit tough here since it is in a bigger shopping plaza, however it is well worth it for the donuts! I had a classic glazed donut, my son got the donut holes, my mom tried the apple fritter and got a chocolate one for my grandpa. My mom was worried the apple fritter would be way too sugary however she was so happy to try it and find that they weren't as overly-sweetened as the ones you find elsewhere such as Safeway. I also ordered an iced blended mocha drink and asked to add a banana to it. The Filipino employee was very patient, friendly and helpful. I would definitely go to this spot again and I'm so happy we found a local business to support! We came here around 4pm and the donuts still tasted great! They also have boba and other non coffee drinks here. Btw, it is cash only. I came to check out their Maple Bacon donut, and we got one of the last ones on a Sunday afternoon around 2pm. These are far and away the best donuts I've ever had. That's a bold statement I know. Run don't walk to this particular donut shop among all the others you've already tried and be prepared to fight with your conscience to keep you from eating more than one.
