Was looking for a vegan option for lunch in Waltham-Masao's was recommended Its a build a plate (or take out box) by the pound price-I think it was around $12.50lb. My take out box was a little hefty so I paid around $19 From the outside it doesn't look like much, but the flavors were solid. My favorite thing on the bar that day was the holiday style green beans with cranberries-I shoulda grabbed an extra scoop of that! Just a nice switch off the normal cold vegan sandwiches and salads you can find elsewhere.. Everything was served hot and fresh and looked appetizing. The bar was clean and well maintained and it was recommended to use either disposable gloves or to well sanitize before touching plates and serving spoons.

This was my first AYCE vegan food! Its a small Japanese home style cafe or shokudo. The seithan variations were impressive! #flexitarian #plantbasedfoodie #plantbasedfoodies

Been going here for years and not only is it next level healthy food all around, but is so tasty that even someone reluctant to try vegan would indulge and love the flavors Masao brings to the table. A must try and a personal favorite forever.

You can count on getting brown rice every day at Masao's Kitchen.

I've been coming here for 17 years as Masao offers a pretty strict macrobiotic/vegan diet of food ~ seasonal veggies, low salt, low sugar, seaweed, grain, and variety of cooking-style foods. I've never been disappointed. With that being said, the menu hasn't changed much in all those years. I guess when you've got a winning healthy food formula, you don't mess with it. He's consistent and I find the food tasty, although for someone not used to eating this way you may think it under-seasoned which is easily solved with the use of condiments. The daily buffet is sold by weight. I highly suggest splurging and getting the tahini custard for dessert. Delish. It could be twice the size and I wouldn't complain. The decor is pretty minimalistic; chairs, small 2-top tables. Definitely nothing fancy. You pour your own water and bus your own table. On street parking on busy Moody Street in Waltham. You can usually find a place to park, no problem.

This place came recommended by a friend of mine who visits here weekly. The food is served buffet style and weighed, so it's nice and quick if you're coming to pick up food on your lunch break! Everything I chose was delicious, well seasoned, and very filling. Vegan spots can be hit or miss for me, but Masao's was definitely a hit. The food is $9.99 a pound so it adds up quick, but for the quality, it's worth it! Masao was very sweet and offered me a free piece of vegan apple cake.

Very nice place with good food . Seating is small but good place in Waltham to get Vegan food.. Would recommend this place as menu changes is month . They have takeout . You pay buy the weight ..

Two plates of hot buffet and almond cookie and oatmeal chip cookie. All vegan.

What a gem! It doesn't look like much from the outside and it kinda doesn't look like much on the inside either, BUT, they offer delicious, home cooked, healthy food that is completely vegan. It's a buffet and you fill your plate and it's priced based on the weight of your plate (or take out container). They also have soups and they'll cook you noodles but I kinda didn't understand how that would happen so I stuck to the buffet. They also have free bread. There is a variety of baked goods. The cookies were a little too crunchy for my liking but the taste was good. The apple strudel looked amazing but sadly had no flavor at all. The food on the buffet was quite tasty and very flavorful. There is seating inside but it's small. I would totally go back in a heartbeat.

I love Masao's Kitchen! Masao's is easily one of my favorite places to eat in Waltham. The food is fresh and extremely flavorful. Masao is very welcoming and helpful. The place is very clean and is usually lively and busy. You can get a copy of their menu for the month on their to-go menu. Before you go make sure to check the times, because the establishment does close during the day to prepare food for the next meal time. Also, be sure to keep in mind that the food is measured by weight ($10/lb.), so it can easily get really pricey. My favorite dishes are the BBQ tofu, the Cauliflower and potato curry, and the brown rice.

What a pleasant surprise on multicultural Moody Street. I was transported back to my younger years visiting food cooperatives and natural foods hot bars in northern New England. The food was tasty - really enjoyed the BBQ tofu. Some of the sides, however, were bland. It's priced by weight, so big eaters could pay a lot. I ate a vegan oatmeal cookie for dessert and it had an unexpectedly crunchy consistency, almost like a granola bar. Masao's is very small and the decor is somewhat tired. He does the most with the limited space he has, but more seating would be nice. We went on a casual business lunch and thankfully caught an open table.

a mix of great stuff from the buffet at Masao's

Masao's is closed for good. The owner had a mild stroke and cannot come back. There is no food like Masao's. I'm in mourning.

They are expensive, but more importantly, they have sentimental value. I followed up multiple times by phone and also sent messages/emails asking the restaurant to check their security footage and let me know whether the sunglasses were left there or picked up by someone. Instead, I received empty promises and dismissive responses. During my last call, when I asked for the owner or someone responsible to review the footage, a person named Nitin laughed at me. That was extremely disappointing and unprofessional. What leaves such a sour taste is not just the lost item, but the lack of sincerity, follow-through, and basic respect toward a paying customer who was simply asking for help. If this is how customer concerns are handled, it makes me question the care and diligence behind the restaurant's overall operations. Train your staff to treat customers with professionalism and decency. When someone reaches out repeatedly about something important, do not dismiss them, make empty promises, or laugh during the conversation. Extremely disappointed.

Cazuela de Coliflor Asada (9/10): Insanely good dish. The cauliflower has perfect texture, complemented by the pistachios. The sauce is SO good. The cauliflower soaks it up so well. Chicharrones (9/10): Melt in your mouth pork belly. The pork skin crust was perfect. The sauces really make most of the dishes here. This dish is no different - I loved the sauce. Ropa Vieja (9/10): Perfectly slow cooked meat. One thing that really stood out to me was actually the white rice. The rice was VERY high quality, and I appreciated it so much. It's rare to come by rice this good. It had the perfect texture, chew, and fragrance. Ropa Vieja de Hongos (9/10): Pretty much the same as Ropa Vieja above. The mushrooms are delicious, and the dish is just as good whether your order the mushroom or steak version. Empanada del Carne (9/10): Oh man, the crusts are so good. This is pretty on par with the ones I just had in Puerto Rico. Chuletas de Cordero (8/10): The seasoning is heavenly. I was licking the lamb chops clean. Croquetas (8/10): Very solid croquetas. Wouldn't say it's a must-order, but you can't go wrong with them. Costillas a la Guayaba (6/10): The first time I had this it was really nicely marinated, and the rib meat is so tender that it almost falls off the bone. The second time, the meat was dry. We arrived a little less than an hour before closing time but we were still happily served. Let me be clear, this is a Ugandan restaurant. Okay, moving on. Our food came out, steaming hot and fresh- nothing seemed like it was reheated (try eating reheated posho y'all). We stayed long after the restaurant was closed to finish our food which really gave me the real homey Ugandan vibes. There were also a bunch of Ugandan uncles in the corner just chatting it up the entire time which was fun. Also, there's a store with Ugandan products, raw frozen cassava/matooke, bitenge, and some other Ugandan staples like Royco, Blueband, Majaani, etc!

I can see from the reviews that some people are expecting a smooth assembly line operation like you might expect if you were eating at a cafeteria in Den Bosch in the Netherlands--which I've done. This ain't that. But bring your patience and adaptability and a smile and you'll be rewarded with a hearty country meal East African style. If you want anything spicy ask for it. In the 3rd world in my experience my Anglo looks meant they leave out the spiciness unless you ask otherwise. The vibe is like a Ugandan version of a British village pub full of locals socializing. If you want to meet every Ugandan expat in the Boston area, come on by. But while most of the people were Ugandan we obvious non-Ugandans were greeted with open arms. We asked them to just bring us dinner, and so they did. One interesting thing was the Indian influence--Uganda had had a large Indian community there until Idi Amin appropriated everything they had and kicked them out of the country. I guess some? many? have returned since Idi Amin was kicked out himself. So among the more obviously indigenous chicken stew and cooked plantains as a major starch was samosas and chapatis, much as you'd expect to find in an Indian restaurant. Portions were so big I got two and a half additional meals out of it. I've tried a lot of cuisines--I live in the SF Bay Area which is one of the most multicultural places on Earth--so for me this wasn't all that exotic. Ethiopian food is a lot moreso and a lot hotter, for example. So someone who's only mildly adventurous should do fine here. Actually Cajun cooking from Louisiana is more exotic, frankly. And hotter. And there's nothing on Karubu's menu like that Gulf Cajun fave "Bucket of Mud Bugs" (crawfish). Both my wife and our local friend who dined with us enjoyed our meal, and I look forward to returning on our next trip to Greater Boston. Interestingly both one of our Uber drivers and the night clerk at our hotel were Ugandan and familiar with Karibu and very pleased that we planned to dine there. A lot of the infrastructure people we deal with as we travel are really very interesting people if you talk with them and don't just treat them like they're invisible. And it can make your travels more interesting than just going somewhere and doing the standard tourist things.

I appreciated how much this place leans into both cultures from decor showcases both cultures to their balanced menu featuring dishes from both. There is ample seating at this place and dont let the construction outside deter you because they are open. We ordered the cheese manakish to start, and this might have been my favorite dish. Balanced with two types of cheese with a light airy texture to it kept it from feeling too dense. The pita its on is crunchy and thin, and theres a drizzle of sauce, likely some form of pesto, that cuts the flavor making it a truly enjoyable dish. We also ordered the chicken kebabs and roasted jerk chicken. The kebabs were a great portion with tender chicken, some greens, and grains. I personally could have used more tzakai, but thats a personal preference. Overall though, the meal did not feel heavy and I left feeling full but not overtly stuffed which I was happy with. My husband's jerk chicken was a sizable dish. The chicken was tender and fell right off the bone, and the pilaf had a nice flavor to it. Overall we really enjoyed our meals. The service can take some time, but its a super small staff so just be patient.
