I love Masalaa. I bring a new friend each time I dine there. I love the dosa that they make, the upma, the rasam -- it's all good. The only downside to Masalaa's buffet is that thy don't have salad available like S. Indian restaurants do in the West Coast -- or fresh fruit with their dessert. I'm very happy that they have Chinese-Indian food on their menu as well. Decor could be updated and the bathrooms could be cleaner and updated as well. Lighting is important and taking pride with the interior would make the food more appealing. I'm still a huge fan because the service has been wonderful and the food is clean - not laden with heavy fatty grease. I have eaten there for lunch and dinner. This vegetarian Indian place is located in a strip mall next to a Indian grocery store. The masala dosa and the vegetarian uttapam is delicious. Service is friendly and quick. The default sambar is a little spicy. You can ask them to make any of the appetizers is varying degree of spiciness. read more

This place has amazing vegetarian food!!! I love dosas which are fermented pancakes filled with savory curry fillings. They have so many different kinds. I used to love this place for its amazing tasting south and North Indian dishes. Having visited this place almost every week after I moved to Colorado, I can say that something has gone wrong with the chefs. We had bad experiences two times in a row. The first time my family opted for the Thursday night buffet which is usually amazing. This time all the curries were soaked in oil and all the items felt stale. I didn't want to give up on masala yet, but, I wish I had. The second time was a nightmare. We ordered two curries and the heat level asked was spicy. We got the curries after almost an hour and it was tangy as hell. We send it back and what do we get? The same curries now very hot! When I told the staff I cannot eat it as its too hot, they say I asked for it. We did get a couple new curries after some argument but those tasted stale too. Being a South Indian I know my curries and dosas. I am not going back there! It's a shame they had to go down this way:/ read more

I am a long-time resident of Denver area. I have been to Masalaa many times in the last 10 + years. Since I moved North, my visits to Aurora have been few and infrequent. I was at Masalaa's this afternoon for their lunch buffet. I don't want to discredit any of the other recent reviewers who gave this place a high rating, but I was searching for good things to say about this restaurant. As a note, this review was for their weekday lunch buffet. I a not sure if they offer a la carte for lunch. I can't comment on their a la carte menu/dinner menu. Pros: Fresh dosai (with potato filling) was good - but the filling itself was tasteless - not enough salt or spices That's about all the +'s Cons: Some of the food served today was Uppuma, Rasam (Indian style soup), sambar (Indian lentil gravy), plain rice, a mixed rice (green in color ), a gourd curry, some fried bread, halwa, paapad, chutneys and the like. 1. Sambar tasted like nothing I have ever tasted before - meaning: pretty average 2. Rasam - very average 3. Upma - Was like insipid morning grits - tasteless, watery - disgrace of a recipe 4. Fried bread- Not sure what this was - Just pieces of dough fried and left to dry - it was leathery and tasteless 5. Mixed Rice - it was green in color - no indication as to what it was - insipid 6. Gourd curry - decent 7. halwa - never tried it since I could not finish my first plate of food 8. They has different variations of potato - in the fried bhajji's, a plain potato curry, and again in the dosa filling. Potatoes on sale this week, I guess. 9. Food was not hot enough 10. Chutneys and side dishes were on ice, and were too cold 11. The place was too cold - too much A/C 12. Layout of restaurant - two separate dining areas with greeting area in the middle, felt cramped. Moreover, storage ares all over the place, including near the restrooms 13. Customer Service - what? what is that? This is non-existent, with the exception of an emotionless greeter/cashier. Smile, and talk to your customers at least once during their meal. I left without finsihing my first plate of food in less than 10 mins. I was thoroughly disappointed with the food and the experience. What happened to the Masalaa of years ago? This place needs to today revamp. No, I don;t work or own any other Indian restaurant in town. As a long time resident of this State, I am totally embarrassed with this Indian restaurant. :-( Note: My review is based on the lunch buffet on a weekday, I have not tried the a-la-carte menu during the week or weekend in a looong time. I would like to hear your feedback. Addendum: Having said all that I have, if the ownership of the restaurant is reading this, here are some of my IMHO suggestions; 1. Smile and check on customers a little more frequently. Ask them if they are enjoying.enjoyed the food 2. Revisit your menu, including the skills of your chef. Maybe you need a new chef. 3. Clean up the mess of shelving near the rest rooms 4. Use smaller containers for the food, so you can serve hot (as in temperature) food in smaller quantities that can be refilled frequently. Personally, I would not mind waiting for a few minutes for hot food. 5. Remove the fired bread - it was a big let down, or replace it with fresh bread 6. Think about a-la-carte ( menu items) for lunch as well. The cooks are probably twiddling their thumbs anyway during the lunch hour. This might take a little longer than the buffet, but please understand that the customer is smart enough to understand that they might have to wait a few minutes for their lunch 7. Make sure food is warm. Thank you. read more

I picked this place because Yelp said they delivered. As far as I know, that is false, but I ordered takeout anyways. Masalaa was definitely worth the drive and going out in the cold! Even though I just ordered takeout, I still got excellent service when I went to pick up my food, and I was even offered tea while I waited. The food was delicious! I love that everything on the menu is vegetarian with a big selection of vegan options! This place is horrible and avoid it at all cost. It is staffed with rude waiters and serve horrible food. The dosas are always over cooked and burnt. The idlis are hard and difficult to swallow. When you give honest feedback, they do not like it and look at you with hostility. The restaurant's lunch hour is till 2:00 PM, but when we went there at 1:25 PM, we were rudely told to get out because they were apparently closed (''Open" sign was still lit). Went with gang of four for Buffet. Firstly, The buffet menu sucks. No Indo-Chinese at all. All the other stuff was with limited quantity. So, dis-appointed with sambar. In Rasmalai, there was just "ras" no "malai". Finally, ordered Mango lassi for all. Tasted sour due to spoilt curd. Have to talk the staff - so attitude, rude, no respect at all. Just talks rubbish. We had lunch on a Saturday and we were pleasantly surprised by the service, food and how nice the people were. We shared an eggplant dish and an okra dish with chapati and all was delicious. There was a buffet option that looked extensive and good but we weren't wanting to eat that much at that time. I have been here 3 times. I would love love love to give Masalaa 4 1/2 stars because their food is delicious! That is why I have been there 3 times despite the fact that the service is the absolute worst I've had anywhere. I probably wouldn't have gone back after the first awful experience--imagine not being acknowledged when you walk in, being seated about 10 minutes later even though there are two other parties in the restaurant, then being ignored at the table for over 15 minutes. Drink orders not taken, naan not coming out with food then being cold when brought out, I could go on and on. Quite a bit of time passed between the first two visits (almost a year) and we'd forgotten how bad the service was and remembered how much we loved the food. Went back a second time and after getting inside immediately remembered how awful the service had been. Above experience was repeated except for the second time they were not only negligent, but also rude. Mind you we're pretty easy to please people. Third time had company in town who requested this restaurant specifically, so we went even though we mentioned the service sucked. Same awful service. It's my all time favorite Indian restaurant in Denver. Now that I have moved to Burbank, I really miss Masala. I remember there was a time when my husband and I would go there every Saturday. It was like our own kitchen. The owner at the time, was really friendly and chatty. We would talk about cricket, Indian politics and of course Bollywood. Then we would order our favorites, Masala Dosa and Masala tea. Masala Dosa is nothing but crispy crepes filled with spicy potatoes and a side of lentil soup and coconut chutney. In fact in all of America there is only ONE dosa stand in New York's Washington Square. And I got this trivia on Rachel Ray's Tasty Travels. Coming back to my Masala, a hot cup of Indian tea with herbs and spices almost serves as a dessert in the end. I checked out almost all the Indian restaurants in Colorado, but that is by far the best, in my eye. These days they have a dinner buffet on Thursday nights. It's a South Indian spread with rice and a side of dosa. I still prefer their extra long dosas served on banana leaves. It's also conveniently located right off the 225 exit. read more
