NOTE RE: HOURS - There was a sign in the door displaying their temporary hours. I think it was 8am or 9am to 3:30pm. I can't remember if they are open on Sunday. We went on a Saturday at 2:30pm and had no problems. Food came out very quickly. FOOD: Super yummy! My BF and I had never had Sudanese food before. The description on the menu sounded good. We asked the chef/owner what he suggests and he directed us towards the ful. This is puréed beans with lots of dynamic spices. Since I'm such a wimp and can't handle at all, he made my ful at a 0 for spicy - but the flavor sure wasn't 0! My BF also got ful but asked for medium spicy level and it was great. - FUL: puréed beans with lots of spices. Comes with some chopped onions, peppers, tomatoes and feta cheese I think on top kind of as a garnish. BF got it without feta and really liked it. Scooped it up both loads of bread. The ful is very rich on its own. Eating it by scooping it with bread dilutes the flavor, as bread does. So I suggest going back and forth between eating with a spoon and eating with bread. - HALF AND HALF: half ful and half eggs. The egg were scrambled with some diced red onions that gave it a nice crunch. And there may have been a few tomatoes scrambled in. The mix-ins were not over powering at all. I think he said there are green chilis in the eggs, but I didn't notice any and it wasn't spicy. But it was spiced very well! DRINKS: we didn't order any, but I saw cans of sprite and Pepsi and they have an intense coffee/espresso machine. AMBIANCE: it's a bit sparse when it comes to the tables and decor, but they do have a high chair so it seems family friendly. PARKING: plenty in the parking lot right in front, but I didn't notice any handicapped parking. SERVICE: nice chef/owner. The place is been there since 2009 but he took over in 2018. We ordered to-go and it was ready pretty darn quick. ACCESSIBILITY: I didn't notice any handicapped parking, but there is so much parking in those strip mall. There are a few potholes in the parking lot though...No stairs to enter, but I don't recall seeing a ramp from the parking lot to the sidewalk in front of any businesses. BATHROOMS: I forgot to check. OVERALL: tasty, not too expensive, and looking forward to trying their coffee some time! read more

It has been 5 years since I wrote my review on Sudan Cafe and every visit in the last 5 years has been as good as the first. The ownership changed this year but the menu stayed the same except the new owner no longer serves Koshari which is a bummer because I thought he had the best Koshari in Denver. The food is still as good if not better than before. My favorite has always been the foul (ful) which is made from fava beans. My stomach is happy very time I walk out of that place. The new owner is very nice and the first time we met he even gave me free food to take home to try. I will for sure continue to come for my foul fix. read more

I went to Dinner with my friend at this establishment on a Tuesday evening. We went there about 19:00hrs ish. We ring the "bell" at the counter, came out a friendly man and we ask some questions about the Menu. He recommended to us to have Liver and another Dish that is NOT in their Menu. We seat ourselves and waited for our food to be ready. There are like 5 other patrons dining away, though I cannot deny 4 of the patrons who were they might be their friends. They are speaking in Arabic or some other foreign language that I am unaware of. The food especially the Liver dish, both of us like it. Our Dinner comes with several warm loaves of Bread. For the Liver dish, they also put Ful. For the Meat dish they put some kind of Salad on top of it, such as Lettuce, Red Onions and Tomato slices. They also provide a plate of Rice if you ask for it. After our Dinner from the conversations we shared with the Owner, we found out that the Owner's wife happened to be my friend's friend.. Their kids used to go to school together. What a small world! Wow! What an amazing find. King of hole in the walls, so definitely not a fancy place. Limited seating, just about 4 tables that seats 4-5 people each and around 2 tables that can seat 2 each. Talk about the food though! Smells amazing as you enter, thanks to all the spices they use. We ordered the cooked fool, koshari and falafel plate. The cooked fool was served with their homemade bread. Oh my goodness, it probably is one of the best things I have ever had the pleasure of eating! I will surely be day dreaming about it until I get a chance to eat it again! The homemade bread was amazing too, soft on the inside and a nice crusty exterior. Koshari is a meal in itself with rice, lentils and macaroni. It is a simple dish, yet tasty. The addition of fried onions gives it a nice flavor. It is an Egyptian dish. Sudan has Ethiopia and Egypt as neighbors and both these countries have influenced the Sudanese cuisine. The falafel was served with pickled cucumbers and a dipping sauce. The falafel here tastes different than the mainstream ones. For one, it doesn't have parsley. Still tasted good! We also had the Sudanese coffee. Loved it! It has some sweet spices in it. It is also served in a special pot. Could sum it all up as comfort food at it's best, tastes like food that a mom cooks. Well, why wouldn't it. It's a family run restaurant and it's the mom cooking in the kitchen. The gentleman taking the order was the owner and he was very sweet and friendly, answering all my questions. Wanted to try their desserts but apparently they were all sold out. He said that they make them all in house and Saturday being a busy day, they were gone before we went in for lunch. They did have some butter cookies on their bakery display. P.s They weren't serving water at any of the tables, maybe they do if you ask for it. I didn't so am not sure. Also, they do accept credit cards. I remember reading in a review that they don't. If you are reading this, pls don't hesitate to give this place a try. It's my pleasure to tell you about another pearl in the Havana Street Business Improvement District, Sudan Cafe [also sometimes called Sudan Bakery], whose hospitable owners pride themselves on bringing you some of the freshest, most flavorful dishes to be found in Aurora. The eatery's breakfast offerings include several dishes collectively known as Fatta, which were initially devised to use up excess bread that would otherwise have gone stale. At Sudan Cafe the bread is sliced finely, then mixed with mashed lentils (Fatta Adas) or fava beans (Fatta Ful), tomatoes and onions for a truly filling repast. Or, you can try the Sudanese and Egyptian truckstop favorite, Koshary. Consisting of macaroni, rice and lentils all mixed together and topped with fried onions and a zingy tomato sauce, this carb-o-rama is also extremely tasty. Lunch items are no less worthy - possibilities include an iron-and-calcium-packed dish of stewed jute leaves (Molokhia) whose texture is reminiscent of cooked okra. (Well, thanks for asking! There is in fact an okra selection, Bamia, on the menu as well). Or, you can sample some soft Sudanese-style falafel (Ta'amiya), traditionally made with fava beans instead of chickpeas. Then again, there's always Kibda - either goat or beef liver, stir-fried with onions and peppers. No matter what you pick, your tastebuds are sure to be pleased. Many of these dishes come with a choice of bread, baked to order onsite (the bakery arm of the cafe is technically known as Khairat Injera Bakery). Of these, the most notable is the supple, lightly-flavored sorghum bread Kisra (or, as it's sometimes called, Sudanese injera) but a crusty baguette-style loaf or indeed pita bread are also available. Wash it all down with a hot tea (Shai) or even tamarind juice (Aradeb) and don't forget to satisfy your dessert cravings with some semolina cake (Basbusa) or perhaps sweet cheese pastry (Kunafa) and you've had a very yummy meal, wouldn't you agree? The lamb liver was probably the best I've ever had- perfectly cooked and very mild. We paired that with the fava beans with Berbre spice- not hot like I expected but VERY tasty. The bread was golden, soft, and warm. We ate way too much. Followed it up with the Sudanese coffee which comes in a sweet little metal pitcher. It wasn't thick like the Turkish coffee that I'm more familiar with- it was lighter but had the hint of cardamom. The service was so friendly and attentive. I will definitely be adding this restaurant to my rotation. My only complaint was a very strong scent of cologne- I have friends who absolutely would not be able to eat here because of it. read more

I was looking to try a new cuisine and stumbled upon this gem. We were treated by who I presume is the owner, who was incredibly friendly and helpful. We ended up ordering a couple of different menu items to share between us, and every one was better than the last. My friend and I were hunting for an African feast and this was a target for us. Wherever you see a snug and safe cafe, I'll be lurking there. Now, I wouldn't come here for the ordinary egg entrees, but Sudan Cafe offers Falafel dish, with 4 jumbo Falafel items and for dirt cheap : ($4.25.) My friend and I were relaxed at the idea of having finally bigger than bite size of those offerings. They were soft, yet crisp and firm. The hot teas with milk are ideal, I would come for that again. It is a wonder and they served us with a milk pot. The Koshari is also interesting!! I've never seen Macaroni move on to a different level of taste: Lentils, (not so much of a fan), but it was very friendly with rice topped of onions!!! Let's not forget their special sauce. It was amazing, but there is nothing to compare it for. I will definitely want to have it again in the next days. Their menus are so fun to read, such fun and unique descriptions!! I was giggling, because menus hardly ever use "Tastes very good," in their wording, but it made me want to come back for that as well. Thought that was swell. Molokhia:: "Is a kind of vegetable with very high nutrition. Kooked with special species, tastes very good. Goes good with bread or Injeria." Thought it was the cutest thing to read on their menu. Upon walking into Sudan Cafe, we were greeted by a friendly fellow who was more than happy to explain in detail what different items on the menu were. We found this very helpful as we had never had Sudanese food before. My husband and I decided on the Foul Special and the Bamia which is okra and beef with injera bread. Our meals were excellent to say the least. My husband also got a lamb liver sandwich which also didn't disappoint. The man who served us also presented us with complimentary tea to wrap up our meal. He also made a point to ask us how much spice we preferred, which I found very thoughtful as he wanted to make sure we would enjoy his food. I must say our first day in Colorado has been quite the experience and everyone is so friendly. read more

The freshly baked bread is outstanding!!! I have eaten here thrice in the last two weeks. - 1st visit: I got the fried eggs. This is actually mildly spiced scrambled eggs. - 2nd visit: I had the liver which was delicious. The liver was chopped and sautéed in onions and served with a great tasting thick paste of some kind. - 3rd visit: I had the cooked Fool. All of the entrees are served with two loaves of bread (similar to french baguette, but softer on the inside and crispy on the outside). I ordered a pot of tea with milk on all 3 occasions and loved it. The milk tastes different. I think it is goat milk, although I am not sure about that :) The best part is that the entrees are extremely inexpensive. They range in price from $6 to $7.50. On all my visits, they had either the FIFA world cup or a news channel playing on the TV. All the other patrons seemed to be from Sudan since they were interacting with the owner (Ahmed) in a foreign language. I will be back to try some their sandwiches soon. read more

Little store in a small shopping plaza, owners where really nice and attentive. Never had food from Sudan but I can say if the rest of it is like this then they are lucky, I had some type of dip mad with fava beans, onions, peppers, tomatoes and olive oil along with 2 fresh loads of bread to go with it and it was amazing. This was the first stop of our progressive international food tour in Aurora. Big thanks to the yelpers that have reviewed this restaurant in the past. We read "cash only" so that is what we did. The restaurant was pretty quiet except for two regulars. Based on pictures and research, we ended up going with one of their fouls. The food came out fast with two large delicious baguettes. The foul was wonderful with fava beans, peppers, feta, what appeared to be toasty cornbread. The baguette was perfect for sopping what our forks couldn't get. A+ experience! read more

Wonderful spot in what looks from the outside like a very uninviting place. The fava bean purée was to die for, so tasty and unique. The falafel was different from any middle eastern falafel I've had, but I suppose that's to be expected given this is northeast African food. The Sudanese coffee was a fun thing to try, but be prepared, it's extremely bitter. Follow the lead of the folks who look like they hang out there often and add plenty of sugar. read more

Excellent!!! Very sweet people. Clean atmosphere. The best seller is that all their food is natural and organic, the oils are 100% pure, and daily fresh vegetables. We started off with hot Pot Tea with Mint. For dinner we ordered the "Lamb Special" (served with lettuce, tomatoes, and red onions surrounded by the best sautéed lamb cut into quarter pieces), which is not on the menu. We also had the "Fool" (fava beans, mixed with olive oil and Sudanese spices), the "Falafel Plate" (mixture of ground hummus, veggies and spices), and the "Fried Eggs" (mixture of scrambled eggs and hot tomato spiced) also known as "Shakashooka." For dessert we tried the Baklawa, Basbusa, and a powdered sugar cookie of some sort. read more

I have been here twice now. The first time was for cookies (the ones with powdered sugar are great) and milk tea with fresh mint. The second time was this week for lunch. We had fool, falafel, molohinka(?). You choose bread, rice or house made injera. I never had Sudanese food before. The food was all delicious. I also had coffee afterwards which I highly recommend. The atmosphere is casual with soccer game on TV, people lingering over coffee and tea. The owner is a very warm person and makes you feel very comfortable. One note, this is not a fast food place. We also had the pasta-lentil dish and the greens with rice dish. Both were huge portions and very tasty. Some African food can be too salty, but Sudan Cafe's seasoning was just right. My first time trying African food. I had the cooked fool.....super good! I was impressed at it's spicyness and good flavor. You eat it with torn bread from a loaf. The bread was fresh and tasty, the fool was spicy and reminded me of a chili, although it had no meat. The owner was very nice and polite. She had a table behind us there from a food magazine, so she was working double time. She realized we were late back to work, so she treated us with some deserts. Homey, mom and pop place, where the owners are warm and attentive. Food wise, it's simple, limited affair, but the things they do they do well. Liver, which the husband recommended, was really good, even for a person who doesn't always like liver. Molokhia and fresh mango juice were also very good. But the baked to order bread was probably the best thing there (they make two kinds of injera too, which I was told by other customers were just as good-will have to try them next).
