My cousins and I were trying to figure out what to have for dinner and came across this establishment. Upon arriving, you can notice that the market and the restaurant are connected in case customers need some ingredients, spices, etc. We were unsure what to order since it was all of our first time trying Ethiopian food. Our server gave us some suggestions and we ended up ordering the Mogne Tibs and a Veggie combo. We didn't know how to eat the veggie combo and our server gave us tip on how to take bites of different items. The Monge Tibs had a generous spice kick. Overall, delicious gamble of food for trying the first time and service was awesome. Interior of the restaurant was decored to reflect the atmosphere of the food. We even got to speak with one of the co-owners and told us her story how the menu is not westerenized, the restaurant has been passed down from a few family members, and why they chose to come to Denver. Visited last evening around 5:30 pm and it was not like my first experience. Which, I 99% of the time, do not eat Ethiopian food in Colorado, only Washington D.C. My friend wanted me to try this location last year, I was reluctant, but tried it. On this second visit, the server was a bit lack luster and did not understand a majority of our request. The picture of the veggie combo platter on the menu is inaccurate with a picture of spaghetti noodles and pasta sauce. We did ask the server about it, and she indicated, it was incorrect and the veggie combo does not come with pasta. The platter was lacking and mediocre to say it best. Yellow lentils was lukewarm, leaning toward cold; green beans were not cleaned well by removing the string and hard stem where they are attached; samosa we both ordered came cold, and we asked if this was suppose to be warm, and she didn't understand our question. I left mine to take home. The greens were the only item hot, but didn't taste like any mixed greens I had before. Extremely bitter and lacking flavor. To top off our evening, we spotted a roach crawling up the wall, then onto the flat screen television and beyond. My stars are reflective of our server experience, food, and the roach. read more

I have always been curious about Ethiopian food and thanks to my two consecutive Ethiopian uber drivers, I finally took the plunge! I came to this place from testimonial recommendations. I got the Mogne Tibs (mildly spicy marinated beef with jalapeños) and it came with a savory crepe-like side to eat it with (I forgot to ask the lady what it was). I informed the waitress that this was my first time trying Ethiopian food and she was so nice about explaining the dishes to me. In the middle of my Mogne Tibs, she came back with awaze and chili powder she recommended me to dip my food in. It was such a great experience! There are so many good ethiopian restaurants in the area and this stands out to be one of the best ones! I noticed I tend to like certain dishes better at other restaurants and this place has AMAZING awaze tibs! The beef and packed with herbs and spices and each bite is filled with flavor. You can tell it soaked in it's broth and marinade really well. The beef was tender and pairs so well with the different types of lentils and veggie dishes. I had it the next day for leftovers and it tasted even better. The injera was soft and had great taste, which paired well with the main course. The gomen and spinach was perfect, nice blend of spices to give it a mild flavor. Overall one of my favorite Ethiopian restaurants in the Denver/Aurora area. Service was great and the decor was cute! The Awaze tibs, gored, gored and the Monge tibs were all excellent. The injera was fluffy, light and perfect. This place came highly recommended as one of the more authentic Ethiopian spots. Sitting here incredibly full and happy! I had a major craving for Ethiopian food tonight, and drove all the way out here for it. I was going to finally be brave enough to try Gored Gored, but the waitress talked me out of it. "Seriously, people order it all the time and don't realize it's raw beef and then they don't eat it." (I love carpaccio, but haven't eaten it in decades because Mad Cow.) So...awaze tibs, and potatoes and lentil sides. (I was actually hoping for a lamb stew, but this was perfectly acceptable!) Living in Congress Park, there's no shortage of solid Ethiopian restaurants within a 10 minute drive. After trying Megenagna, I think I'll drive the extra 20 minutes just for the food alone. The flavors are that good. I believe we ordered the Special Kitfo Mix (#1 on the menu), which comes with kitfo and gomen, both delicious and accompanied by plain and spiced cottage cheeses that pair surprisingly well. We got the kitfo cooked medium even though it's traditionally a raw dish; I'm sure it's great either way. There was also a side of awaze sauce topped with something very, very similar to wasabi. Whatever it is, it's awesome and adds a unique kick to the gomen and kitfo. We also received a little side sampler of some of their veggie dishes, including the spicy splint lentils, yellow peas, and some type of lightly stewed greens. Everything was amazing, and we'll definitely be coming back for the full veggie combo. read more

Megenagna is a real hidden gem where you can get some great Ethiopian food! Getting in can be a little confusing because you first walk in through the market next door and walk into the restaurant through a doorway at the back of the market. Once your in the restaurant though prepare to eat some delicious and super flavorful food! We ended up getting the veggie combo which is a must. I'm not a vegetarian but it's the best way to get a wide variety of different dishes with potatoes, lentils, spinach and more. All of them are delicious and great with the injera bread. We also got a meat dish the Awaze beef tibs, this dish is a flavor explosion! So tasty, the spices they use are out of this wold! I've never had Ethiopian food before. Then, I tried out this place in Aurora. It was a pleasant surprise. It had a similarity to Indian food, but it was with beef instead. I ordered the Awaze Tibs, which was cubed rib-eye in a spicy tomato-based sauce. It also came with flatbread. This bread was softer than the more firm naan bread at Indian restaurants. The Awaze Tibs had an intense flavor, with a medium amount of spiciness. If someone is a fan of Indian food, I'd recommend going here to try Ethiopian cuisine. If someone is curious how beef would taste in Indian food, I'd highly recommend this place. The decor was also incredibly cool in the inside, and the staff were friendly. They were pleased to see customers wanting to try Ethiopian food. They also give you plenty of food for the money as well, which was $19. read more

We've been craving Ethiopian and decided to give this spot a try. I saw some reviews said they're on the pricey side - we thought the prices were very reasonable, to be honest, though we aren't well versed in the Ethiopian food scene of Denver... Yet! We ordered take out and our food was ready in 15 mins. Got the veggie combo platter and the mogne tibs. We were also given a side of injera. So let's start with that - the injera was super tasty, very thin, great texture as expected, and that amazing sour fermented flavor. Definitely one of the better injera breads I've had in some time (or I was really hungry... Either way it was tasty!). The veggie combo plate has a generous portion of food for the price with a variety of dishes included. We thought all of them were quite tasty though nothing too mind blowing - just what you'd expect really, which is sometimes what you need/want anyway, that familiar taste. The spice levels were ideal for a combo platter of this nature. Finally, the mogne tibs... I think maybe I just had higher expectations for this dish - the sauce is great and the flavor is good, the meat itself was OK. The price seems a lot but it does have a ton of meat in it so I'd say it's more than fair for what you get. Overall though while we liked it, we weren't huge fans so next time we will opt to try another meat dish. Overall, good Ethiopian food if you're in the mood for it! Note that it's in a small strip (that also has an Ethiopian grocery spot, etc) and while there seems to be plenty of parking, when we went midday Saturday all the spots were taken except for one! Finally after 3 years, I managed to have Lunch with fellow lovely Yelper & friend, Mary Jo here. We wanted to go here many moons ago, but due to schedule conflicting, we did not until this recent visit on a Friday for LUNCH. First impression as what she said it was good. There is an insense smell upon entering. We opt to be seated on the left wing of this establishment. The seats and tables some what is a little too uncomfortable for me, but I brave on. Our lovely server, answered all of my questions, coz I am unfamiliar with some of the sauces or ingredients that is featured in the Menu. From the simple menu that they offer, we opt to share the following items : * Awaze Tibs ($12.50) This dish comes with chopped Rib-eye marinated and cooked with tomato, jalapeno, garlic and berbere sauce. * Veggie Combo ($12.99) This dish comes with spicy splint lentils, yellow peas, cabbage, shiro something like a beet dish and served with salad. YES, you eat what you order with your own bare hands. Whatever gravy that comes with the Awaze Tibs, you scoop it with the Injera Bread. Both of us, agreed we liked the Awaze Tibs WAY BETTER than the Veggie Combo. We are also given a basketful of Injera Bread, that is needed coz those Awaze Tibs are SO addictive! Just take note, THOSE Injera Bread can be VERY filling. All in all definitely an affordable Lunch, which is very filling. Due to time constraint, I am unable to explore the Market next door to this establishment. DEFINITELY returning when my schedule permits. Got takeout from here on a Sunday night during COVID-19. The food was delicious! We got the veggie platter (combo of about 6 veg dishes like lentils, cabbage/carrots, peas, beets, etc.), and an order of the Awaze tibs. Combined with the generous amounts of injera, this was plenty for two of us for dinner (including some leftovers). I wish they had more different meat options besides beef, and/or a meat combo platter. But the tibs was delicious, in a spicy, oily sauce. The injera was super fluffy and sour, just the way I like it. And all of the veggie dishes were flavorful. Pickup was a little interesting, since I walked in the door 6 minutes before they closed, and they told me "Sorry, we're closed". I mentioned that I was just picking up my order, but then they seemed confused ("for Grubhub?"... "oh, online order?"... "hmm, for what name?"... "what name again?") even though there was only one order, mine, ready to go. Whatever. They packaged it up and I was out of there in 2 minutes to go home and enjoy the food! read more

Megenagna Restaurant is located inside the Megenagna African Grocery market so look out for the market entrance and you'll see the restaurant in the back of the store. The service was fast and friendly. The menu consists of various Ethiopian dishes and the two entrees we went with were incredible! The veggie combo consists of spicy split lentil, yellow peas, green cabbage, and shiro. This dish can easily be split between another person. Each veggie was so fresh and flavorful- highly recommend ordering this. The other dish ended up being the Awaze Tibs. Wow, the depth of flavor with the spices.. so delicious.
