I went here for my first time trying Ethiopian food and at first I was a little skeptical but it was very good. I would like to say if it's your first time just know the "bread" ingera is more sour-ish and is kind of an acquired taste. I would say I have been here many many times now and have taken to go and eaten in small groups and bigger groups. I would say the area is definitely very beautiful and cultural. The take out doesn't really give you the experience so I would say eating there is better. I wouldn't say costumer service is above and beyond but they definitely are nice and have helped us taking out food to go and check on us to see how we're doing. The food is definitely more expensive than I would wish but lots of time and effort go into making the food so it is nice to splurge on this kind of food. Now since I have been here many times, every time the food is amazing and hot (not spicy hot but temp hot) waiting time isn't too long and it's usually nice and quiet enough to hear your friends not too quiet where you can hear a pen drop. But don't overlook Lucy near Colfax/Quebec - it's full of fresh and flavorful (and also filling) favorites served in a clean and inviting space. One of my favorite offerings there is the chicken stirfry known as Yedoro Tibs in Amharic and Nay Tibsi Derho in Tigrinya. Redolent with the spice mixture Berbere and sided with soft supple rounds of the teff-based flatbread variously called Injera or Tayta, the dish is served in plentiful portions, ensuring that prospective diners will be suitably satiated. However, I can also attest to the potato stew (Yedinich Wot / Tsebhi Dinish) I sampled on my most recent visit to Lucy. This dish is a bit more mild, utilizing seasonings such as turmeric and ginger for a mellower mouthfeel. Nevertheless, the savory sauce is still a worthy accompaniment to the sizable chunks of potato and carrot which can be found within it. I was very pleased by my meal. But honestly, anything you try at Lucy is sure to be a winner, so stop by and check out one of Colfax's less-heralded Habesha gems. read more

An Ethiopian friend recommended this restaurant to me and we met to eat for lunch. Firstly the service was incredibly nice and she was sweet about making the food a little less spicy for me than for my friend. We had a veggie and meat plate and everything was absolutely delicious. The Injera was fluffy and sour in just the right way which went so well with all the veggies and meat. I had a good amount of leftovers to take home to the family and since my family is mostly gluten free it worked out perfectly. I've lived in Atlanta and Chicago and had some amazing Ethiopian food there, but Lucy is hands down the best Ethiopian food I've had. I never thought I'd find a place in Denver that could compete with, let alone top, my favorite restaurants from those cities. But Lucy is that good. We ordered the veggie platter and an extra side of potatoes for two of us, which was perfect and still gave us some leftovers. Every single dish was flavorful, hot, and fresh. I especially loved the gomen (so nice that it's made with collard greens too!), cabbage, and both lentil dishes. The injera was also perfectly tangy and delicious. I love the Juicy lamb Tibs and the spinach. The injera texture, softness and taste is the best I've ever had. My Partner who was born in Ethiopia always sends me to Lucy's to get Injera and she has me order extra so we can use Lucy's injera when she cooks for me at home. Grateful for my Ethiopian cab driver yesterday who gave me the lowdown on Denver's East African community and recommended this place. It's a small operation that probably seats 30 people, but they were pretty busy the whole time with a crowd that was at least 80% Ethiopian (always a good sign). The vegetarian combo was a joy and I got the firfir as a side too. It's a vegan dream for sure and teff flour, which is used for injera, is suitable for folks with IBS and easily-upset stomachs. We've hit five star reviews lately and Lucy's totally earned theirs! We sat at the bar, on our way to a concert, ordered a few things and then later needed to edit our orders after our waitress checked with the chef and ingredients. I'll admit, I was a little nervous about changing what I thought I was going to enjoy, but trying new things is the spice of life, and she was very sure that we'd both be happy. And she was absolutely correct. Eating with your hands is so experiential - it's cool to be at one with your food. Yes, we used the ingera to scoop up yummy bites, but even without it, the flavors were amazing. And injera is not joke to properly prepare. YouTube injera to get an appreciation of the time and energy it take to make this wonderfully, slightly sour bread. We ordered kitfo (minced lean beef) and yebeg tibs (lamb). I've gotten take out a couple of times during the COVID-19 restrictions. Lucy has really been a welcome change to our normal dinner routine. The food is delicious, fresh, and well-portioned. I would think a typical person could easily get two meals from one order. Of course, I was taught to finish my plate, so I almost always do. The staff here is always super friendly and I really enjoy looking around at the decor while I wait for my food. Looking back at my previous review, I really don't know what I was thinking. The one thing that really made it stand out to me, over my usual Ethiopian restaurant I go to, was the excellent service and the speed of food coming out. We usually end up at "Queen" so we decided to try a new spot. I've heard about this place a couple times in the past year and it's fairly close by so we decided to give it a shot. Ordered five dishes. The split peas (ater) and the red lentils (yemisir) were very good. The chicken (doro wat) was too salty, so much so it took away from enjoying the flavor of the stew. The lamb (derek tibs) was so rubbery, to the point of being inedible. In the veggie combo, the gomen (collard greens) stood out, but the potatoes and cabbage were too salty and lacked other flavor. If someone suggested we eat here, I'd say ok sure, and I'd just ordered the lentils and gomen. But I can't say I'd recommend the place. read more

We were visiting from another state and were craving injera. Lucy's was the closest one and we decided to give it a try. Lucy's really exceeded our expectations. Much less popular than its Queen of Sheeba neighbor next door, but the food here is good, tastes very on par with good authentic Ethiopian food I've had elsewhere, and the service is friendly. I came here after having a bad experience next door and it was a great find. Had the Kifto and Derek Tibs which are generally my Ethopian go-to's, and they didn't disappoint. If you've never had Ethiopian, be prepared for an experience you've never had (injera is your "fork"), but they will be happy to walk you through it, as I'm sure it's not the first time they've seen a non-Ethiopian who was clueless like you. After being introduced to the cuisine by a few Ethiopian friends, it's become one of my favorites, and Lucy's didn't disappoint. I got off a plane on father day Sunday and was hungry for some healthy vegetarian Ethiopian foods. Took a Lyft to Cofax and stopped at Mesob first but they were cleaning their kitchen. I walked across the street to the Ethiopian market and they had recommend Abyssinian but that is a 20 min walk. I asked how about Burger King and they shuddered and said "no". I asked about Lucy and they said that's good too. But yelp doesn't list their number! Thank goodness google listed it and it was a 2 min walk. To the food: it's pretty good. Two dollops of red lentil, one dollop of yellow lentil, salad, cabbage, potatoes/carrots. It's very home cooked and goes down easily.
