    Veggie Combo

I was happy to find this gem next door to my new place. I've only ordered the Vegetarian Combo (repeatedly, because it's that good!) which is misir wot, red lentils, gomen, collard greens, fasolia, etc. Prices are reasonable and portions are very generous. The people there are really friendly as well. You can tell a lot of regulars go there but you are made to feel welcome anyway.

I hate to write bad reviews, but there were just so many things that went wrong. But first, the pros: they were open at lunchtime for dine in. Most African/Ethiopian places were only open for dinner or takeout. When we arrived, the hostess/waitress checked our temperatures and required us to sign our names and contact info in case of an outbreak. Great! That's about where the pros ended. There was only one other party dining when we arrived. The waitress dropped off menus and left. Within our group of 7, we each received a menu but then realized that there were 3 versions with different items and prices. We asked the waitress to clarify portion sizes and prices- she confirmed that the menu with the $12.95 Banatu special was actually from a few YEARS ago (apparently the price is now $22.95). Anyway, we ordered sambusas to start. Our friend was sure she had asked for beef sambusas so she was surprised when they finally came out and were all filled with lentils. Ok, no big deal, they tasted good, but she'll just order another one for herself because she really wanted a meat sambusa. The waitress then said that they don't do meat sambusa. Alright... but the menus had different options for fillings. We ordered a couple entrees to share. I don't remember what everyone ordered but I know we had the Banatu special, veggie combo, and lamb tibs at least. When the food came out, it was decent, but there were a couple of very burnt pieces of meat from one of the plates. Their injera was also more sour than I've had before but that's just personal preference. I get that we're living in COVID times, but unless our waitress was also the one cooking the food, service was waaay too slow for the number of people dining (we didn't get refills on water until all our cups were empty and we waved her down). Unfortunately, I can't say that the food was worth the wait. If you plan on dining here, make sure your afternoon is free.

This was an African/Ethiopian restaurant. We started with two sambosas as an appetizer! The sambosa came out within 10 minutes and was crispy on the outside with the inside slightly spicy and lentils pouring out once I put my fork into it. Next, we got both the veggie and meat combo (which of course came with injera on the side). The entire plate (as in the picture), came out in about 15 min after the appetizer. The lamb, chicken and beef were sublime. The chicken drumstick was covered in a coffee tasting brown sauce and was easily the tastiest of the meats (in my opinion). The veggie side was filled with lentil and chickpea pastes. Very creamy and also slightly spicy. Every item on the plate tasted very nicely with the injera. Definitely will come here again!

New menu!!! Well, I haven't been here in about 5-6 years lol.

About as good as I remember. I still enjoy this place. Only real downside to this meal was that the doro wat chicken was wayyyyyyy too tough. It was almost like it was days old. Otherwise, the veggies and injera were good, as always :)

Tried this Ethiopian restaurant for the first time. I normally have my regular place I go too which was closed. Was a great experience and was very happy with the quality of food. Everything tasted great and very authentic. Their Injera bread is great something i always critique, they have the perfect amount of flavor with fermentation which is very important to complete the dish. They have been understaff with covid so I say give them a break they are Doug. Their best! Give them a try!

It's a shame, this place used to be good, I'd been there several times. But now the food was bad and the service was just bloody awful

I would like to say if it's your first time just know the "bread" ingera is more sour-ish and is kind of an acquired taste. I would say I have been here many many times now and have taken to go and eaten in small groups and bigger groups. I would say the area is definitely very beautiful and cultural. The take out doesn't really give you the experience so I would say eating there is better. I wouldn't say costumer service is above and beyond but they definitely are nice and have helped us taking out food to go and check on us to see how we're doing. The food is definitely more expensive than I would wish but lots of time and effort go into making the food so it is nice to splurge on this kind of food. Now since I have been here many times, every time the food is amazing and hot (not spicy hot but temp hot) waiting time isn't too long and it's usually nice and quiet enough to hear your friends not too quiet where you can hear a pen drop. FYI they are not welcome to outside food/drink in case one person wants other food.

But don't overlook Lucy near Colfax/Quebec - it's full of fresh and flavorful (and also filling) favorites served in a clean and inviting space. One of my favorite offerings there is the chicken stirfry known as Yedoro Tibs in Amharic and Nay Tibsi Derho in Tigrinya. Redolent with the spice mixture Berbere and sided with soft supple rounds of the teff-based flatbread variously called Injera or Tayta, the dish is served in plentiful portions, ensuring that prospective diners will be suitably satiated. However, I can also attest to the potato stew (Yedinich Wot / Tsebhi Dinish) I sampled on my most recent visit to Lucy. This dish is a bit more mild, utilizing seasonings such as turmeric and ginger for a mellower mouthfeel. Nevertheless, the savory sauce is still a worthy accompaniment to the sizable chunks of potato and carrot which can be found within it. I was very pleased by my meal. But honestly, anything you try at Lucy is sure to be a winner, so stop by and check out one of Colfax's less-heralded Habesha gems.

This used to be our favorite Ethiopian spot until our most recent take out experience…read more We called to order two vegetarian combos at 5:30 and were told told to come in pick up at 5:45. When we get there at 5:45, we notice that the food is packed up in a medium (9"x13") sized aluminum pan with lid. In the past we'd gotten our meals in two styrofoam take out boxes with plenty of food so I was initially excited to see the new packaging because I believed the quantity would be the same or more. We get home 5 mins later and were sorely disappointed by our order. There were plenty of lentils but the orange ones were undercooked and lacked flavor. There were only about two bites of the collard greens/Gomen wat. And usually Mama África supplies more potatoes spears with their carrot and cabbage side, this time, we also only got two bites of the cabbage, no potatoes. Not to mention, the green beans were definitely canned and had no additional flavor to them. We asked for a side of chickpea soup/shiro wat and were disappointed to find that it too lacked flavor and was mostly oil. The worst part in addition to all the above was that the food was cold and the injera tasted stale and lacked its usual sourness. To add insult to injury, the meal was nearly 70 dollars in total for something that barely fed one person. This was the first time I ever wanted to ask for a refund for our food because we barely received one portion of the veggie combo, not the two we paid for. I hate to leave a one star review for a small business but the quality and quantity of food went down drastically.
