This place is great. Its hard to find a good southern india style food. Most indian restaurants in the area are that rich northern style nepal-like food. Not saying that these are bad, but sometimes you want one or the other! The vegetarian buffet is very good. Its good for meat eaters too, but as a vegetarian its nice to be able to eat everything at the buffet and not have to be so careful. The staff is also really nice and although I pretty much know my indian food, the owner(?) the first time I went was sure to explain the menu and dishes. At first I was slightly annoyed because I knew most of the items, but then really appreciated how this would be good for a newbie and also got inspiration to try the more unique items of the southern style. Again the place is great, but Im giving it 4 stars because the atmosphere is a little dinky and a lot chaotic. I think its great that they get a lot of customers and I hope it stays this way, but if you want a nice quiet meal, you need to go on off times. read more

This is probably the only Indian restaurant to serve Dosas and other south Indian food. The dosas are quite good, though nothing (in no city) touches Calcutta food. Still, the dosa, uttapams, idlis, and vadas, are quite good and I would go back. They need to clean up the place before health inspectors shut them down though. Prices are fair and the buffet seems to be decent as well. The service is pretty quick and they are generally friendly. Thank goodness we have a dosa place near Denver. Most of the other Indian restaurants (yes, including Little India) are quite mediocre at best). We will be back next weekend. read more

The food is ok. There is no service whatsoever though. The wait staff basically takes the order expressionless, and then just leaves. They make silly, uncomfortable faces as if it is your fault that they had to get up and come take your order. They bring the food out, and then disappear. I take my family out for good food and GREAT service. We will not be returning to this place. read more

I moved here from Chicago in 2003 where I ate Indian food 3-5 times per week. I am a strict vegetarian who likes it hot, at least hot for an American. I suffered through the other, more central Indian restaurants in Denver for 3 years until I could take no more. I found Woodlands and Masalaa. Woodlands has since closed their doors but Masalaa continues on and I can tell you it is by far and away the best if you want flavorful Indian food. Great flavors, big menu, and a good buffet. The staff is friendly and they are open good hours. I strongly recommend the idly and sambar--great for breakfast, their pondicherry dosa is out of this world, and paneer tikka masala means the day will be good. I truly can't say enough nice things. If you've grown weary of greasy, bland, Indian food, head to Masalaa. It can get a little spicy for the unaccustomed. read more

We decided to go to MASALA this Memorial Day weekend during our stay in Aurora,CO. We first called them to know more about whether its operational or not. The guy picked our call was very nice and had given positive response. The food was awesome especially Chapatis are just like our home made chapatis. Our US Stay so far.. we have not seen any place offering you REAL Chapatis instead of Naan.We are highly impressed with their service, food quality and quantity as well. We would like to have same tasty food from MASALA again and again if we go to Denvor. read more

I was thrilled to find this gem last night for dinner. The entire restaurant is vegetarian, with vegan and gluten free menu items clearly marked. As a vegan, I was overjoyed to have so many options to choose from, including a number of dishes I had never seen before. What a relief to order from a menu without having to ask about the ingredients! My partner had a dosa and I had an uthappam. Our meals came out in a timely fashion and the food was delicious. Staff was also very friendly and attentive. Upon discovering that I was vegan, the owner said that they could modify even non-vegan menu items to suit my needs. Just horrible food utter trash. I wish there was a zero star rating for this place. It was repulsive and gross, food here was very bad and made all of us want to throw up. All if this was horrible. So oily and unappetizing I couldn't think of a worse place. I hate everything about it. And the chef was some stupid person who didn't even let us get a small refund. If you love dosa - come to Masalaa! I was so excited to discover this place in Denver after becoming addicted to masala dosa in Connecticut and worrying that I wouldn't be able to find it. If you have never tried masala dosa, come here and order one. Perfect, crunchy tube of bread sheltering a hot, spicy lump of delicious potatoes. My favorite dish here is the Paper Masala Dosa. Being a South Asian, I've eaten at many Indian Vegetarian Restaurants, and I'd have to say this was the worst. The food was so bland, without any salt and spice. The water came out with a dead fly floating at the top, which the server failed to notice. The vadas we ordered were stale, and the pakoras were dry and tasteless. The dosas were unsalted and unsavory...the rasam was edible, as was the sambar, but that's pretty much it. Two thumbs down...complete waste of calories and time! Will not be returning. read more

Probably the best Indian food I've had so far. Haven't been to India, but of all the places I've tried in Colorado and on the East Coast, this one definitely takes the cake. 08/09/21, we went to eat at the restaurant reading the reviews people posted. looks like they do not know how to give reviews. our experience was really bad, we will never go again. the front desk never greets people, say hello or hi, stiff faced, we set at the table. we ordered rava dosa and idli sambhar. food quality was bad. i am from india, i know the food. the rava dosa was 10 to 12" round, but the issue is they had 50 black peppers in the batter, very spicy. told them the issue, the waiter said they will replace it, and give us a plain dosa free and they wont charge. i even showed him, when the bill came he charged us for what he said was replacement. we told him to take off the bill. he had taken the rava back. still he denied taking off the bill. he was rude. he never took it off and chrged us. looks like he was from south india. they have to learn manners first. this place changed hands 5 to 6 ownership. they will never survive. please do not go by the ratings and be fooled by reviews. honestly i like to support small buisness. but being ripped off is another level. he also was wearing flimsy indian sandals serving food. no dress code. they will fail. had very bad experience. i have lived in denver for 35 years, seen many restaurant come and go, so far this was my worst experience. the food was very spicy. its not question of money but customer service, was worse, not welcoming. they carry same attitude like in india. read more

So let me begin by saying this review is not about the taste of their food but more about their extremely poor customer service and deceitful practices. We came for dinner last night, there were four of us. We saw there was a buffet option, we were there around 8.30 pm. Restaurant is supposed to be open until 10 pm. We had decided that we will order a la Carte than opting for buffet. Later, we changed our minds and asked server if buffet was still an option. We had to confirm as we entered we saw 70% of the buffet items were gone. We were under the impression that they will refill empty items since there were some other people too and mind you it was only 8.30. We also reminded our server few times, he stated they are bringing it. We started dining with whatever was left. We were there for approximately 45 minutes if not more. All items still remained empty on the counter. Whatever was left - it was missing any solid ingredient for instance there were no eggplants in eggplant curry only curry left, there were no vada in dahi vada, no malai kofta left, pooris were cold and probably left out for hours, no biryani left, rice looked stale, Sambhar was thick gooey mess - these are just few examples. We felt cheated after paying $13/person for nothing left buffet. There were no sincere apologies from the staff or any intention to give discount or charge less. Most frustrating part was that we were not there at their closing time - if so, I can understand. We were there for their peak hours when restaurant was pretty full. This was my second time at the restaurant. We did enjoy first go around, where we had ordered from the menu, that draw us second time. I seriously doubt that we would be returning any time soon. I think they could have handled situation much better by letting us know the buffet situation or at least offering some discount in the final check when they can't keep up or provide food as promised. read more

Really love this place...actually, I think this might be my favorite Indian restaurant in the Denver Metro area. No wait, I don't "think this might be"...I'm sure it is :) Make sure you are in the right hand lane before crossing Peoria going north on Parker road..otherwise you'll miss it! It's right on the corner. Look for the Dairy Queen and that's the same parking lot you turn into (and blech, pass on the dairy queen folks!). Pretty ample parking there They label the buffet for the vegan entrees and the ones with dairy. Major plus there. Very smart of them, as it shows they care about their vegan customers..and it brings in more people. The dosas that come with the meal are very good. crispy but yet light. Because I can eat like no tomorrow, I never have a problem enjoying the dosas and a couple of rounds at the buffet. Flavorful dishes that go well together. One time though, it was a little weird. They had a Chinese noodle dish in the midst of all this incredible south indian buffet goodness. Very odd..but I'd like to think that one of the employees in the back was just giving his nephew a summer job as a cook and he messed up one of the indian dishes that should go out there. They likely panicked and was like "ok, chillax and break out the Ramen so we can fill that gap in the buffet". :) It's simple decor and ambiance. not anything fancy if that's what you're looking for. but, as long as it's clean, I'm happy. I went to Masalaa last night with my parents. The place is a little grimy looking, which is usually a sign of delicious things to come. After being seated, looking over a drool-worthy menu, and ordering a couple dosas and a curry, we took a minute to look around. We quickly discovered SEVERAL COCKROACHES climbing the walls of the dining room!! Now this is NOT my first time sharing a meal with a couple roaches, but never in this country. We debated leaving but decided that a little extra roach protein wouldn't kill us, so we stayed. We let our waiter know about the bugs and he promptly went over and SMASHED THEM AGAINST THE WALL! The customer service is excellent. The food is delicious and it tastes exactly like you would find it in India. On the downside, the management nickel and dimes you for any extras that other Indian restaurants provide you for free, e.g. sambar.The restaurant and the bathrooms areas are not kept clean, and I also found stains on my water cup. Awhile back I visited Masalaa. The restaurant was near empty and it was past the rush hour. I wanted to sit in a specific spot and the waiter said no. You cannot sit here but will sit there. I did not like the waiter's tone of voice or demeanor. I have operated restaurants in Bombay and in Denver so I do have a pretty good handle of the norms in the restaurant business. Unfortunately for consumers this is the only Indian fully vegetarian restaurant. I wish consumers had more choices in fully vegetarian Indian restaurants then maybe market forces will compel this business to behave more courteously and professionally with its guests and adhere to the basic norms in the hospitality industry which restaurant are an integral part of. I do hope that the owners will wake up and address the behavior of its employees. For the prices that they charge ( I do not have any problem with the prices per se) I expect commensurate level of professionalism, courtesy and hospitality. read more
