Amazing place. My favorite restaurant in boston, hands down. Call it consumerism, but to be really honest, my favorite thing that this restaurant offers is the buffet option during lunch. On weekdays you just pay $8.95 for an elaborate buffet, generally including shrimp, chicken tandoori, chicken tikka masala, palak paneer, Nepali style chicken curry, a tofu dish, various other veggie dishes, gulab jamun for dessert and most importantly (since I'm from Nepal) unlimited Momos!!!!!!! The price for the buffet is a tad higher (11.95) on the weekends, but they also upgrade the regular buffet by offering calamari or salmon dishes. Either way, the buffet experience leaves you wanting nothing else than a bed to lie down on and to let the food coma take over. And wait, one last thing. I can never get enough of their Naan- it is SO fresh, simple, and delicious. The Chicken Korma and Tandoori Chicken are delicious & the Vegetable Samosas are a great light app as well! Lunch buffet Mon-Fri is outstanding. So many delicious options. Take little tastes your first time through the line. There are far too many to fit on one plate! I had a horrible experience with Masala. I ordered delivery via Eat24 for the first time ever on a Thursday night. It took over an hour and a half for the food to arrive. And the drivers are Masala drivers, not third party drivers so the fault is entirely on Masala. I first called to check on the food after about an hour. The restaurant told me the driver was on his way. .... 20 min later still no food. Called again and was ensured food was still coming. 10 minutes later the food showed up only slightly warm Now let's get to the food... Ordered chicken tikka masala, my fav indian dish, and what arrived was liquid and soupy. Not spicy at all even though I ordered medium spicy. It was pretty horrible and I could barely take more than a few bites If you are looking for awesome tasty indian I highly recommend taking your business to Punjabi Grill in Davis Square. Came here for the lunch buffet on the weekend and was not disappointing. They have a good variety of items to choose from and the garlic naan they bring toy our table to start is amazing. My only critiques would be to refill the buffet items more often. We were there for about 45 minutes and didn't see them refill anything during our stay. One cannot beat this place for some great Indian/ Napali/Pakistani type food. We ordered six different entrees which included lamb, chicken, spinach, beef in addition to ordering appetizers. Went for the lunch buffet on Memorial day with two friends. The options seemed pretty ok, but there was only one type of Nepalese food - the chicken momos. There weren't vegetarian momos so one of my friends couldn't try it. The Indian dishes were okay, not amazing. Nothing was very flavorful. The gulab jamun was good, though. The reason for my low rating: one of my friends found an eyelash in her chicken momo and my other friend found a piece of hair in her samosa. I was surprised at the abundance of hair in our food. Ew! Ruined all of our appetites. We told the server, and without saying anything he just took our dishes and came back with a check reducing the price of one of our buffets to half. This is my second time coming here. The food is of good quality and the place itself was so cute coming here. However, the service was debatable. There were two nice food runners who were very kind and attentive. I went with my partner here. I'm not sure why, but our waitress was very sassy. She would make faces after we ordered or asked for something. For context, we are a same-sex couple and maybe that was a factor? This was an issue. Additionally, she would press for us to order more food and would give us a look when we didn't want to. When it came to the check, she placed my card down hard on the table and chose her own tip on the Toast device. And when we were leaving she was waiting right by the table. She repeated "bye" twice as I was still putting on my coat. We order just a few items for dinner and I don't feel like it is appropriate for the waitress to be rude about our choices. This is the second time I have encountered her service. The time before was a bigger group, so I excused her behavior last time. Now I know that this is simply how the waitress is. It really felt like such an uncomfortable atmosphere. It was very unwelcoming and I don't see us coming back here unless she is not working evenings because I don't think I can handle such negativity for dinner. Ordered delivery from here, minimum is $15 for free delivery so I ordered the non vegetarian plate which ended up costing over $20. Was not very impressed with what I got an hour later. It was entirely meat, no rice or veggies or anything, and the portion was pretty underwhelming given the price. All of it was pretty dry and chewy, as if it had been sitting in the refrigerator for a while before being microwaved for me. While the food was pretty decent, the motto "Customers come first" was seriously lacking at Masala: Upon entrance, everything looked beautiful. Not to mention the lunch buffet was perfect for us because we were starving, but then the experience went downhill from there. We were a group of 5, and 3 of my friends were fairly tall (5'10" to 6'0"). Instead of putting us at one of the bigger tables, they squeezed us in a booth made for 4 people, even though we were the only customers in the entire place. We didn't say anything because it seemed like a small thing at first. However, a few minutes into eating, which basically means we've committed to the place, the waiter comes to tell us for the first time that they will be closing in 10 minutes. If it was a take out place, then we could've easily accommodated that, but we were paying for a lunch buffet. Therefore, we asked if we could grab our second plate of food, and just set it on the table behind us since we were already crammed at the booth. The waiter tells us "no," but if we really can't finish in 10-15 minutes, then we can do that. Let me remind you that my friends and I were the only ones in the restaurant, so it's not like they were short on tables. Not to mention we were paying for a buffet, not a 10-15 minute take-out. I went to talk to the manager, but he didn't budge. Fast forwarding to the end of our meal, they turned off the restaurant lights while we were still taking care of the check and finishing our last bites at the table. We were slightly appeased when they gave us a 5% discount on top of the 10% promo that we had, but then we found out that they charged us for the nan that we didn't ask In summary, the 1 star is for the lack of consideration and transparency of the staff members and the decent but cold buffet food. read more

My favorite dish is definitely the goat curry, which is savory and filling. The complimentary garlic naan is also a must-try, and on the weekends, there's also a guy who will make you a dosa appetizer. Make sure to save room for the refreshingly sweet kheer pudding for dessert! And if you're in the mood to let loose, $3 margaritas are also available and actually decently made. However, I do have to caution that the flavors aren't always consistent in the few times I've visited. In addition, the service could use improvement. My finished plate takes awhile to be taken away, and I've had to flag down the waiter (who is often nowhere to be seen) for water refills. I came here for my friends birthday. we had a group of 8 and since we were all new to the restaurant it took us some time to decide what to order. The waiter was super patient and didnt hover or rush us. This place has quiet the college student following. many coming in to eat and drink. Margerita's were definately flowing at the tables around us. Portions are decent and I had a good amount to take home. I think I will come back here again and definately have someone else drive so I can have a few margerita's haha! read more

Terrible service today. I was told on entry that there were no tables available for me and asked to sit at the already overcrowded bar. Notwithstanding that being as tall as I am I could clearly see two unoccupied tables. When I stepped around the corner the server ran in front of me and said, oh yes, those tables. There is a table. Sorry! in a flippant, insouciant, sorry-not-sorry way. Then when I asked to speak to the manager or the owner I was told that nobody was available to speak with me. Ordered food home this time rather than dining in.. Ordered the Onion Kulcha, Malai Kofta, and the Chilli Chicken. The kofta was very dry. The gravy tasted alright. Chilli chicken was okay. Why do people like this place so much!? I have given it two fair shots and I just don't enjoy their food at all. I tried their momos and Nepali non veg platter and the food was so mediocre. Previously I had tried chilli momos and biryani just tasted so bland and now well marinated and made with love the way it should be. Also my servers were both unfriendly and did not give good service. All they cared about was getting our order in and out. No ability to answer questions. However, there's one male server (mid 50) who claims to be a manager of that restaurant started passing personal comments in our third visit. My partner Pamela and have been going to Masala for several years, and it's our primary source for Indian and Nepali food. The staff is always warm and friendly, and the food is delicious. The complementary papadum appetizer is warm, fresh and tasty. We often get the saag paneer and fish masala, but I've tried most of their fish dishes and have not been disappointed. There's a good selection of wine and beer, including several beers from India, and a full bar for cocktails. I would place this in the realm of good Indian- on a scale from meh to amazing (and paying accordingly). What I term "good" Indian is the sweet spot of being really good (not award winning), hits the spot when you're craving Indian, and at the right price that I'll ultimately order consistently. I will say I've only ordered delivery from them and haven't been to the actual location, so I can't attest to the service in the realm. That being said, their food is delicious and pretty average priced for "good" Indian. Definitely my favorite Indian place in the area. I live much closer to Diva's, on Elm Street right in Davis, but always make the slightly longer trek out to Masala. I have eaten here twice over the past 5 or so years. Both times were really great. Not overly fancy like some Indian places but very nice and comfortable inside. Friendly attentive and yet nicely low key service. The Vindaloo was really nice. The rice with a hint of cardamom, Lovely chutneys with a crispy wafer as an appetizer. All fresh and crispy and tasty. The Saag is Nepalese featuring mustard greens that still have some nice snap and flavor. I like Saag at indian restaurants in general, but the Saag here is especially nice. read more

I'd like to start by saying the food is delicious. But Last night was my second time there and I was displeased by the end our stay. I requested a small booth instead of where they wanted us to originally to sit and it became quite an involved conversation. They were explaining to us they didn't want to disturb us while they did the buffet turnover. After say ok that's fine we will sit there, they persisted about sitting else where about 3 more times. Also the restaurant clearly states that they close at 11, at about 1030 they asked us to leave while we were enjoying conversation after our meal. We ordered takeout from Masala on a frigid Friday night, hoping the vibrant spices would warm our shivering bones. However, we were left cold by the experience. Our order was small: Chicken Tikka Masala, Aloo Gobi and Garlic Naan. A simple takeout request for a kitchen staff with little else to do (the restaurant was empty upon our arrival). However, when we returned home, excited to begin our feast, we realized a grave omission: No. Garlic. Naan. We were at a crossroads: venture back into the cold dark night to retrieve our bread or let Masala think they had won. We weren't about to forget that glutinous promise, so we bundled back up and braved the elements to retrieve our prize. Calling the restaurant, a smug employee chuckled when I explained the mistake..doubting our resolve to correct this injustice. When we showed up, expecting an apology - we were met with blank stares, chirping crickets and a lonely bag housing a damp, flaccid flatbread.
