First time at Marujuu, and definitely not my last! Their Washugyu burger recently popped up on my For You page, so I had to see what the hype was about. The restaurant has limited seating with a steady flow of people, but luckily, we were seated right away. They start you off with warm and delicious Japanese French onion miso soup, with self-serve stations for unlimited soup and rice. For appetizers, we got the refreshing salmon salad and crispy broccoli. Whatever you do, DO NOT skip the broccoli! It was perfectly crispy and so good, I've never loved vegetables so much. For our entrees, I got the hamburg and ribeye steak, while my boyfriend got the Washugyu burger, both served on sizzling plates. Between the food and atmosphere, it felt like we were transported to Japan. Everything was delicious, and we'll definitely be back!

My brother has been talking about wanting to go to Marujuu for a while now, so we visited on a Friday afternoon after work-- and it was a pleasant experience for the both of us. This is my second time here and my brother's first time. We were warmly greeted (in Japanese) by staff, and the restaurant walls are filled with posters of anime which I find really cool. We started off with the soup, which was light but flavorful. I remember the soup being different from the first time I came here, but this new version is actually much better. My brother ordered the Hamburg & Ribeye with Gorgonzola Cheese Sauce ($36), and he couldn't stop saying how much he liked the dish. He loves to eat beef and rich & creamy dishes, so it was the perfect choice for him. I ordered Hamburg & Fried Oysters with Grated Daikon Ponzu Sauce ($30), and I was surprised at how the sauce was able to cut through the richness of the hamburg and oysters, giving a really balanced flavor profile. They also have a corner when you can grab your own refills for rice and soup (it's unlimited!). I ended up pouring leftover sauce on my rice and getting more :) Metered parking available around the area, and there's also the municipal lot across the street.

Food was pretty good for the price! The soup was delicious and it was free refills for rice and soup! My friends and I went in at 8PM, when it closed at 9PM. We got a variety of sauces, but I got the regular one! We sampled each other's dishes and they were really flavorful! The food came out in like 15ish minutes (of course give them some grace for not closing on us). The waiter was super nice! He was really nice, I forgot his name but he has blonde short hair (dyed). The restaurant has good parking & it's decorated with anime posters. A variety of booths and long tables.

Been reading about Marujuu and looking forward to trying g their food! Got seat and immediately got served menu and water- the service here is right on! Friendly and helpful . So many choices on sauces - we got the onion gravy ! We got started with their beef broth - very good and very good w/ their rice. Next came our salad and fries - great fries - then rice and hamburger served w/ corn. It was a delicious lunch and I'd love to go back to try their steak! Parking is limited to meter parking in the back of the restaurant.

Finally got a chance to try Marujuu and now I understand why people keep talking about this place. Note: New Menu just dropped in June 2026 If you're into Japanese-style hamburger steak and sizzling platters, this spot delivers. The hamburger steak was juicy, flavorful, and came out piping hot on the iron plate. The sauces paired perfectly with the meat, and the portion size was satisfying without feeling overly heavy. What I really liked was the old-school Japan steakhouse vibe. Nothing overly fancy--just good comfort food done right. The sizzling sound when the plate hits the table instantly gets you hungry. Service was super friendly, food came out quickly, and the restaurant was clean and welcoming. Parking can be a little tight depending on when you go, but it's definitely worth the visit. It's a metered lot behind the building... it's actually really cheap parking but can get busy. If you're craving Japanese hamburg steak, steak, or a hearty meal that reminds you of Japan, Marujuu is absolutely worth checking out. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. Recommended: Hamburger Steak, Steak Combo, and anything served on the sizzling plate. Save room for extra rice because you're going to want it. Bonus- there is soft served dessert available and also a bonus chance to win a prize with a claw machine after your meal... you can even win some discounts or free food for next visit

Food was incredibly good and tasty, packed with flavor, and cooked perfectly. On top of that, the service was great. The staff members were polite, attentive, and quick despite how busy it was. However, the major downside was the atmosphere. About half the dining area was very hot with poor ventilation, causing smoke from the kitchen cooking area to trap right where people were trying to eat. It got very hot and uncomfortable, making it hard to fully enjoy the meal (minus 1 star). I would definitely eat here again for the delicious food and wonderful staff, but I will strictly request a table far away from the hot half of the restaurant.

I pleasantly enjoyed my time here, but was let down when it felt a bit warm while we had lunch. Maybe it was because we were seated in the corner booth, but it was only slightly uncomfortable. My friends and I got their Hamburg plate with no add ons- we chose their onion sauce. I loved the unlimited soup and rice service they had- it was self-serve which was fine. Burger was very juicy and plump! We shared their Nori Butter Cheese French fries- it was good! But I'd be fine without ordering it during my next visit.

Food was ok. The karage was tasty. Wasnt the biggest fan though of the calamari. Didn't feel crispy enough. Hamburger steak was juicy but this might be weird but I kinda liked the free soup it came with more. Overall im glad I tried it but not sure if it will be a staple place for me with the cost and food. Overall didnt hate it but didnt love it either.

First time trying Marujuu after seeing their new burgers on Instagram. Made reservations for Wednesday night at 5 pm. Got seated pretty quickly and staff was quick to explain the menu. I ordered the hambagu/ribeye combo with onion sauce and my friend got the hambagu with fried oysters and Gorgonzola sauce. We also ordered the fried broccoli. There was a clear broth with chunks of ground beef and onion in it which is refillable. It was warming and very tasty. Helped myself to a second cup while waiting for our food. Our food arrived sizzling hot, sauces on the side in a small gravy boat. We also received a small plate of rice and was informed that this too was refillable. The steak and hambagu were both very juicy and cooked to my preference. The sauce is what really made the dish though. I ended up pouring some on my rice, it was that good! The fried broccoli was also a big favorite on our table. It was crunchy and seasoned perfectly! As someone who normally dislikes broccoli, I could come here and eat tho everyday! Overall the experience was an excellent one. I will definitely be back. Going to invite my family to come try this place because they're suckers for Japanese hamburger steaks.

Located where the old Chubbies and Koko Head Cafe used to be, with parking meters nearby. We got here around 530p on a Friday and was able to snag a booth seat without having any wait time. The place had countertop, booth and bench seats throughout the establishment, that quickly filled up. We were offered onion soup and water rather quickly and efficiently. We also didn't wait very long for our food to come through either (about 15 min). I was anticipating a much longer wait time, based on other reviews, though I believe we came here on a good day, they were turning tables in that 1 hour that we were there. And if you have good company, the time goes by quickly! As for the food, I ordered the signature onion sauce which was sweet, salty, and gritty all at the same time. I also tried my friend's Gorgonzola cheese sauce and it reminded me of the cheese in those cheese and cracker snack packs. Each hamburg comes with grilled vegetables (cabbage), pasta (spaghetti with marinara), and white rice. You can add toppings or larger portions for an additional cost. Also got an order of the original salt fries, no frills about it. Overall, the portion size for a regular was smaller than I had anticipated (went home and ate a snack afterwards). A friend of mine who went previously, mentioned the large portions just have more of the sides, rather than the meat itself. Ended the night with the self-service soft serve ice cream that has pineapple, vanilla or a mix of both. You can opt for a cup or cone. Just know that the machine pushes the product out very quickly, so if you don't have the technique down, you won't be able to stack the ice cream as high as you'd like it, without it toppling over. It was a decent experience, though I don't know if the product was worth the price for me.

Had a great meal at Marujuu in Kaimukī! The hamburg was delicious and came with veggies, plus unlimited soup and rice, which made it an awesome value. The fried chicken and French fries were yummy too. Friendly, attentive service made the experience even better. I'll definitely be back!

Spacious and plenty of bar, table, or booth seating

Immediately when you enter, you're welcomed by the friendly faces of the staff, popular Japanese music, and the amazing smell of the kitchen. You're no longer in Kaimuki but somewhere in Japan at a family restaurant, pondering which of the delicious dishes you'll have for lunch or dinner. This restaurant has it all. The comfort and vibe and a little something for everyone. While I wouldn't call this a budget option, you definitely get what you pay for as you can get as much soup and rice as you'd like to have with your meal. The restaurant also has a list of beer, whiskey highballs, sours, or even a wine list if you choose to partake in a beverage. I decided on the Calpico sour and the Hamburg and Fried Oysters. The hamburger was juicy tender and you can tell that there has been a lot of care into the recipe. My oysters were also delicious and full of flavor, crispy on the outside and not too salty. The soup was also surprisingly delicious and was much heartier than I expected with a lot of substance to it. Definitely not your standard free soup that you get from other places. We went for a lunch date and made a reservation, although there was plenty of available seating when we went in so it may have not been completely needed. Plenty of parking available in the immediate area and nearby. Definitely looking forward to visiting again for the delicious food and the unique Japanese experience.

Dinner date with my son Marwynn at Marujuu Japanese was such a nice experience. We loved the cozy, casual vibe and the fun sizzling hot plates everything came out hot and comforting. The Japanese hamburger steak was juicy, flavorful, and perfect with rice. Simple, satisfying, and just the kind of comfort food we enjoy together. And great service :) Great spot for a relaxed mom & son dinner date. Thank you for free ice cream soft serve as well... We'll definitely come back again!

    So good.

Getting a reservation for a party of more than six was very difficult since they never answered their phone, but don't let that stop you. We drove by and made the reservation in person, and thankfully, it worked out! When we arrived, we were greeted by our friendly server (Kat), who made sure our table was ready and everything was perfect. The ambiance of this place was beautiful. We loved the dark walls and dim lighting--it felt cozy, intimate, and very romantic. For appetizers, we ordered the bone marrow, clams, escargot, shishito peppers, and duck-fat fries. Everything came out relatively quickly and was delicious. The fries were especially addicting--we loved them so much that we had to order a second serving! For our main courses, we decided to do everything family-style and ordered the rack of lamb, porterhouse, beef ragu, corn on the cob, and sautéed mushrooms. The little ones had the smoked meat with rice and mac and cheese. The entrees took a little longer to come out, but it was completely understandable considering how much food we ordered! And the portions definitely did not disappoint. There was more than enough food for all 10 of us, with plenty left over for lunch the next day. The porterhouse steak was gigantic and perfectly cooked, but surprisingly, our favorite was the rack of lamb. The meat was so tender and juicy--absolutely delicious! Overall, The Cutlery was such a wonderful experience. Great food, beautiful ambiance, generous portions, and friendly service made it the perfect spot for my husband's birthday celebration. Our…read morereservation was for 5:00 p.m., during the restaurant's advertised happy hour, which runs until 7:00 p.m. Before arriving, we had looked at the happy hour menu online and assumed those selections would be available during that time. We were seated in the dining room and ordered drinks, but no one mentioned that happy hour was restricted to a different seating area. It was only after we received the dinner menus, noticed the happy hour selections were missing, and specifically asked our waiter about them that we were told the happy hour menu could not be ordered in the dining area. By then, we had already ordered our drinks at full price. I think this is something the restaurant should make much clearer on its website and during the reservation and seating process. If a 5:00 p.m. reservation places guests in an area where the advertised happy hour does not apply, that should be disclosed before they are seated, or at minimum before they begin ordering. The difference affects not only price, but also the food selections available and the overall dining experience. Our group was actually a little stumped by the regular dinner menu because the options were much more limited than what we had been looking at online. I asked specifically about the Scallops Dynamite because I do not tolerate spicy food well. I told our waiter that I did not like spicy food, and he explained that the dynamite sauce could be served on the side and that the scallops themselves were basically seasoned with seeds. Unfortunately, even without the sauce, the scallops were extremely spicy. I could barely eat them. The heat was intense enough that I drank my entire glass of water and then much of my daughter's trying to cool my mouth. When the waiter came back and asked how everything was, I told him directly that I could not eat the scallops because they were far too spicy. He smiled and walked away. There was no offer to replace them, remake them without the spicy seasoning, suggest another entrée, or even acknowledge that the dish was not what I had been led to expect. That was probably the most disappointing part of the experience. At a restaurant at this price point, where many items are à la carte, I would expect the staff to be more attentive to whether a guest can actually enjoy the meal, especially after the guest specifically asked about the spice level before ordering. There was also a smaller moment that reflected the overall lack of attention to detail. Our guest of honor arrived wearing two leis, and the waiter immediately said, "Happy Birthday." He had to correct him and explain that he was actually leaving the islands. A more polished approach would have been something simple like, "Are we celebrating anything special tonight?" It could just as easily have been a birthday, promotion, retirement, anniversary, or farewell. I dine out and travel frequently, so I understand that not every meal or service interaction will be perfect. But several things missed the mark here, and together they changed what should have been a special farewell dinner. We will not be returning, but I do hope management takes the feedback constructively, particularly regarding clearer disclosure of the happy hour seating restrictions and how staff respond when a guest clearly cannot eat the dish they ordered. My advice for first time diners is ask where you will be seated if you're hoping for a full menu option during happy hour. The website is misleading.

Thankyou Doc for treating us to Aburiya Ibushi for Grandparents Day 2026. Excited...first time…read morehere and we arrived more than 30 minutes prior to our 5:30 pm reservation. Exterior just calls out to you. I'll write more once we are seated and taste their food. I already looked at their menu on Yelp, read some reviews and know what I want to try. All 3 employees welcomed us with smiles and a happy greeting. It smells SO good when you enter of good food. Catchy Japanese pop music adds to the festive vibe. Their menu is extensive. Everything sounds, looks and tastes amazing. Erin was the best and such a pretty hostess, table server and made the evening enjoyable. Yuzu was all smiles, cute and prepared some of the food. She also helped Doc make our dinner reservations. Chef was so busy preparing the dishes I didn't get to ask him his name but I flashed a thumbs up to him as we were leaving and he gave a big smile. There was so much delicious food we asked for take out containers for the oxtail ramen and tender grilled beef. We had to pass on dessert. Actually my melon float was like a pretty dessert. Hubs drank a lychee soda. Highly recommend this restaurant. Come for the food, atmosphere and friendliest staff. We even caught a glimpse of their very young boss who also greeted us when he arrived.

Always been wanting to try this place out, but could never find the time. Finally made it out here…read moreon a Friday around 5p (with no reservations) there were a handful of people in the establishment. We were welcomed in, though told that we had to depart by a certain time because there was another reservation coming in. Not a problem for us, appreciated the head's up. We were at a countertop seating, towards the restrooms. We could still see the cooks grilling in our peripheral view. We noticed that when it got busy, the place got super duper smokey really fast, to the point where they opened the front door to air some of that out. I wished they had a better ventilation system because we definitely left there smelling of smoke. As for the food, definitely shareable with different dishes from grilled meats to sides and starches. The server was also kind in helping us navigate through the menu when we had first arrived. There's a lot going on, in terms of specials of the day. Though I noticed, that when it got busy, we saw less and less of our server, and had to flag him down for more water several times. Save some room for dessert, for their sister company (Cha to Gelato Zen) is located right next door. Overall, if you're looking for a lively (loud) spot to drink and/or eat pupus, this place has an interesting vibe to it.

my partner and i found ourselves visiting basalt almost every day of our weeklong trip on oahu…read morebecause every item we ordered off their menu was spectacular! they balanced flavors beautifully with super fresh ingredients and focused on the texture as much as the taste. we honestly never would have expected some of our favorite meals on the island to come from a restaurant tucked away in the back of an unassuming food court on kuhio ave! PICTURED 01. citrus-cured salmon toast: country bread, lemon-cream cheese, scrambled eggs, capers, red onions, chives, waipoli mixed greens ($22) if i could eat this for breakfast every day, i could envision becoming a morning person. i loved how the citrus and capers brightened every savory bite. the bread was perfectly toasted and the vegetables were wonderfully crisp. 02. crab cake benedict: english muffin, kale, two poached waialua eggs, hollandaise, yuzu kosho honey mustard, sidewinder potatoes ($28) this was a refreshing take on a classic breakfast item. the crab cake and potatoes were salted just right! 03. charcoal buttermilk pancakes: guava strawberry sauce, ash whipped cream, berries ($20) these pancakes were a DREAM: fluffy and accompanied by sauce that was not too sweet!

She gave us great recommendations. I'm glad we took her advice. The pork loin with butternut squash special was delicious. Every bite was tender and had a wonderful balance of flavors. The pear salad has amazing fresh pear slices with a wonderful complement of greens, cheese and salad dressing. I'll definitely go back during my next trip.

The happy hour is limited to the bar, but there are so many good options, including some seafood favorites like Kona lobster toast, oysters, spicy ahi tacos, and even a NY strip! I had the oysters and spicy ahi tuna tacos, and both were so good. My mom got the bone marrow prime beef burger and fries, which was put together table side. Such a fun presentation and the burger was delicious! I also had the Stripsteak martini, which came with black truffle and blue cheese-stuffed olives. Definitely a fun drink if you like a dirty martini! Overall, this was such a great spot to stop for happy hour. The food felt really high quality, the service was great, and there were so many things I wanted to try. If you're looking for an upscale happy hour with amazing food, definitely check out Stripsteak. 10/10 recommend!

Excellent experience from start to finish for our anniversary dinner…read more We ordered the truffle Caesar salad, bacon wrapped scallops, ribeye, asparagus, short rib fried rice, and an Old Fashioned. Everything was well prepared and full of flavor, with the ribeye being the highlight for us. The service was outstanding, attentive, professional, and welcoming throughout the meal. One of our favorite dinners in Hawaii and definitely a restaurant we would return to.
