The have different selections of tempura and you can even ask them to make fresh ones for you if you dont want the ones on the rack already. As someone who loves Udon, I'm very happy that they opened a Marugame Udon within SGV. First impressions is that they're quite spacious. Similar to the one in Arcadia, the process is exactly the same, maybe even quicker here. Their menu can change time to time, in which I was interested in trying their new selections. Parking - Free in a huge shared parking lot, very spacious but can get packed easily. My partner and I visited during a packed Friday evening but diners clear out pretty quick after their done with their meal. I was able to try their new menu selection, the Bolognese Bowl. I absolutely devoured this dish. It's very similar to a spaghetti type dish in which I was very impressed. Mixed with the slight broth, noodles, and sauce, it was very creamy and very easy to savor. Each bite is full of flavor. Highly recommend this new menu selection! They also have a selection of tempura options, not really a big fan of tempura overall but I'd have a tempura once in awhile. This time around, my wife got me the shrimp one. Very tasty, crunchy, and easy to eat. Overall, a great addition to SGV, udon can be easily made but can also be hard as well if you don't know what you're doing. I recently visited Marugame Udon and decided to try their new Bolognese Udon. It was something different from the usual udon dishes, and I enjoyed the combination of the rich meat sauce with the chewy udon noodles and melted cheese. It was a creative twist that made me want to give their new menu item a shot. The main disappointment was the tempura selection. Many of the tempura items were already sold out, and while you can request them to make fresh batches, the wait was long. By the time the tempura was ready, I had already finished my udon. The few tempura items that were still available on display were also below warm temperature, which took away from the experience. Overall, the udon was good and the new Bolognese flavor was worth trying, but I hope they can do a better job keeping popular tempura items stocked and served hot. I'd still come back for the noodles, but the tempura side could definitely be improved. read more

Marugame Udon was such a pleasant surprise. The cafeteria-style setup is efficient without feeling cold or rushed -- honestly kind of quaint and satisfying to move through. The service was fantastic the entire time as well. I ordered the creamy udon with a shrimp tempura and imitation crab tempura on the side. The shrimp tempura was excellent -- light, crispy, and something I'd definitely order again. The imitation crab tempura unfortunately wasn't for me. The creamy udon itself had wonderful flavor, and the jammy eggs absolutely hit. My only real critique is that the bowl had a little too much udon compared to the soup ratio, so toward the end it felt slightly less balanced than I would've liked. If they allowed some customization on the soup-to-noodle ratio, I would absolutely come back regularly. I was under the impression that BK was a sauce and not a soup... but it's pretty much a soup. Very heavily seasoned, didn't drink the broth. The noodles were fine, nothing to rave about. The shrimp tempura was small but well fried! Not oily or greasy. Overall wouldn't get this again but might pick up tempura as a side. Tamagoyaki Tempura ($2.99)-- It must have been sitting out for a little bit because it wasn't crispy but... I see the potential. Would've been great if it was freshly fried. How it works is you order with the guy portioning udon (first person in the assembly line), he'll hand you your order when it's done (very quickly), ask if you want the green onion or tempura flakes, and then you can self-serve yourself tempura of your choosing. Then, they'll charge you at the register. From there, self-serve water, tempura sauce, utensils, and pick a seat of your choosing. There's ample seating and I'm sure it can accommodate large crowds. It's not good but it's not bad? If you're in the area shopping at 99 Ranch and just want to quickly cafeteria line get a meal in... maybe this is the spot for you. It's convenient. There was a plenty of parking in the plaza when we came on a weekend dinner. Place appeared clean and was pretty empty. There was kiosk to order. We decided to order at the counter. We got the large Nikutama for $15.99, regular Beef Tomatama Curry for $15.99, and regular Cheese Katsu Tomatama Curry for $14.99. The large size included double portion noodles and more soup. The large size was too much for one person. The regular size was enough. All three udon soups were descent and super filling. The whole dining experience was similar to getting school lunch. You line up, order/grab what you want, pay, choose a table to eat, then put your tray away. The whole process was pretty simple and required minimal workers. "Wow" is all we kept saying after walking into this quick & delicious udon spot. From the beginning of our visit, the staff was friendly & helpful. They even asked if we needed a high chair for our baby and we noticed them helping with bringing trays to the table. For not being a sit down, this was great to see. Now for the food, it was DELICIOUS! We ordered the under $10 menu kake noodles and the broth was so tasty. The noodles were perfectly soft and the right amount of thickness. So happy to also find them at the San Gabriel Plaza. Big and clean dining space. Restrooms available. Free parking shared with other businesses. They are right next door to Wushiland. Perfect location! Upon entry, self-ordering kiosk is to your right. Pick up area is straight ahead. Dine-in ordering is to your left. Here's how it works... you get in line, pick your item, tell the staff member your item, and they will make your bowl. Afterwards, you choose your appetizers of your choice, but remember, each appetizer is an extra charge so be mindful. Otherwise, your meal could turn out to be over $20+ depending on the add-ons. Pay for your order. Grad your utensils, sauces, and/or water. Choose a table, sit down, and eat/drink. Once you're done, return your tray to the tray return area. Staff was super friendly and helpful. I asked if Tan Tan broth was spicy. They gave me a sample of it. It was actually pretty tasty and good... spice was manageable. I didn't get it though. I opted for the regular Cheese Katsu Tomatama Curry Udon which had the perfect portion. Tomato flavored curry was smooth and tasty. Udon noodles had the right texture. Chicken katsu was chunky and moist. Cheese was a nice touch. Believe it or not, I ate all of it in one sitting... no leftovers! Great to see this plaza getting modernized and that Marugame has joined the mix. This is a solid location and I always enjoy Marugame. If you game it correctly, as stated on their flyers, you can get a bowl of udon for around $10. I came here late on a Wednesday evening, so there was no wait for me to order my udon, get my tempura, and pay and there were lots of seating available. I know that the mall location gets so fisted with barely any seating and things can get messy, but due to the larger location, and the time I went it was definitely much more space to stretch and less of a mess. They do have a sign showing people where to go for order to dine in, pick up, and an order kiosk as well. Probably gets horribly fisted on more busier days and nights. I got their seasonal Tomatoma Beef Curry udon and it was SUPER thick broth wise, to the point where I can dip the artificial crab tempura (super huge and moist) and the potato croquette, I got into it, but that's fine by me curry wise. They also do NOT skimp out on the noodles, broth, beef and tempura and green onions. It was so much piled on top, I had to get a smaller to go cup and scoop out some noodles, beef, and curry to be able to eat it properly without spilling everywhere (already sort of did that). We love to see this level of generosity. Broth had a slight spicy kick, and of course, the nice sweet tangy taste of tomato. Was surprised to see how this place is set up, it's almost like a chipotle but I'd definitely say up so many tiers in quality. I ordered the one with tomatoe cheese and it was really filling. The katsu was fried to perfection and the udon was the perfect texture of soft and chewy. I also opted to get a pumpkin tempura and it was delicious. I appreciate that you can request for a fresh batch of tempura and they have clearly labeled photos of what should be there so if they run out you can request it. Really solid place to eat and I'm so glad it opened up in this plaza since it's right near my dad's house. The only thing I didn't like was that they give soooo little soup! All the udon soaks up the soup and I end up eating a dry udon instead of the udon soup I intended to enjoy. I usually order the kitsune but this time I tried the beef tomata curry and that was rich with curry taste and so yummy! I also like the sweet potato tempura and the zucchini tempura on the side. Ordering is super straightforward: you line up, place your order with one of the workers, wait for your bowl, and then make your way toward the cashier. Along the way, you pass trays of freshly made tempura, which is always dangerous in the best way. I usually grab some because it's that good. When I looked at the menu, I noticed a seasonal item - the Cheese Katsu Tomatama Curry - and it sounded incredible. I ordered it, and the kind worker let me know it usually comes with rice but was happy to switch it out to udon for me. Best decision ever. It was so good. If you love tomato-based, cheesy curry, this is it. So, so good. The katsu was perfectly crispy, and everything came together so delicious. The staff were amazing too. The kind worker even told us that if we wanted any tempura made fresh, he'd be happy to make it for us. My friend ordered the curry nikutama and shrimp tempura as an appetizer, which is always a classic favorite. Absolutely delicious. I like my udon pretty plain, I know others like the beef and egg addition (they're good), but I just like enjoying that fresh wheat noodle with a simple broth. You can't find this elsewhere for cheap. Request tempura with the employees and they'll make it fresh. Inside the Ranch 99 plaza, it's closer to Prospect Ave than Del Mar and Valley. There is plenty of parking because it has a huge lot. There are two entrances to this location. This location is very similar to the other store located at the Santa Anita mall, but a lot larger. There are a lot of tables inside for diners to sit and eat. They have a water station, seasoning station, and utensils away from the tables. There was a special going on that gave one piece of shrimp tempura to be $1.99. I got the last one which was cold and wasn't as crispy as when the new batch came out. I wish there were more pieces so I could have gotten two. The ordering system is a little confusing at first, at it's cafeteria style, but you order at the start of the line, receive your bowl, and then make your way to the tempura section to select your tasty fried accompaniments. Marugame isn't necessarily the cheapest meal, as the tempura can add up quickly. However, it does taste fresh and have a fun novel concept. I visited this location on July 18 right at opening at 11:00 am. I ordered the tonkotsu udon and the soft-boiled egg served with my meal was SPOILED and tasted distinctly sour. After taking just one bite of the egg I immediately stopped eating and left the rest of the meal untouched. Because I was the first customer of the day, this points to a serious issue about quality control and the rotation of ingredients. A kitchen should be actively taste-testing and quality checking their prep before opening doors to ensure they aren't serving compromised food. I brought the issue to the staff's attention immediately. While they did issue a refund, management should implement stricter morning line checks, as serving spoiled items is a significant health hazard! Safe to say I won't be coming back here. read more

My mom was craving udon, and we've pretty much hit up every other location except for this one...and it was on the way where we were headed, so decided to try this spot out. If you don't already know...I'm a HUGE fan of Maragume udon, and like I said previously, I've gone to every location except for this one. Same quick service. same, yummy budget-friendly udon. Lots of options, same as the others...plus they also have the Kalamansi juice (It's like a filipino version of lemonade...but better) here too! Service - counter / cafeteria style service, where you get your udon from them, but get all the extras tempura stuff and drinks yourself and check out at the end of the counter...but whatever questions I had for the staff, they were able to answer and were very friendly. Parking - The google and apple maps directions don't quite have the location as accurately as one would like, i ended up parking pretty far away and had to move my car when I found out where exactly it was. It's in the north-west side of the plaza. If you park in the main lot where 99 ranch is, but as close as possible to Daiso, you'll still have to walk a little ways into the area, past the escalators and it's next to the boba place. But there's also a small parking area right behind where Maragume is, so if you can get there, then the shorter your walk. read more

I'm glad they've expanded to more places so you can get that same quality closer to home. This new location is pretty nice. It has a large seating area and was clean and well-organized when I visited. You start by ordering your udon at the counter. I went with the large Nikutama, then moved down the line to grab tempura. I ended up picking jalapeño, zucchini, shrimp, and squid all freshly made and still crispy when I sat down. The udon came out quickly. A good bowl of udon really comes down to the texture, and this location nailed it. The noodles had that perfect chew, and the broth was flavorful without being too salty. The tempura was light, crispy, and not greasy, which really hit the spot. So far, this is my favorite Marugame location in SoCal. If you like creamy sweet flavors you may enjoy. (2.5/5) Overall it was more of a lacking experience but also because I went outside my norm and tried items I've never had before. Parking around the area is easy as it shares the plaza parking lot. The restaurant is spacious and suitable for family/large group gatherings. It's a order, pay and self seating location. The serving area is set up like a cafeteria line where you let the staff know your order and they prep it in front of you. There is also an area where you can pick which tempura pieces you'd like to add. Be mindful that the tempura dishes are different prices and are sold per piece, besides the fried gyoza which are sold in 5 pieces. The udon noodles are cooked fresh and reheated in warm water when you order. Even with the reheating, the udon retains its chewiness. The soup broth is pretty standard and it's mainly the toppings that adds the added flavor. I ordered the regular Nikutama which has a sweet taste from the beef and comes with a soft boiled egg. My boyfriend got Beef udon but a large bowl, which basically is just double the udon amount. If you're looking a noodle soup spot this the place to go.
